Would the Ultra 5 represent better value?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/852465

  • Yes, but that one expired :(

    • It doesn't seem like there is much in it to me.

I went for the Ryzen. Did I miss something?

    • Also curious about this. I've ordered the Ryzen. Is the Intel Ultra meant to be better? Price for above deal is also $1k with code HGTECH.

      • +5

CPU performance should be pretty similar despite the intel being 14 cores and the Ryzen only 6, The Ryzen is stronger in single threaded and has more TOPS (if you care about AI performance?).

        • +8

As stated above they are pretty similar in terms of CPU performance in benchmarks.

The Ryzen has 6 performance cores. The intel has 4 performance cores and the rest of them are E cores, which can be 30% slower.

Additionally the AMD has a better Radeon IGPU and driver support in games which provides a significant advantage based on all the tests on YouTube.

In terms of AI the Intel is 11 TOPS and the AMD is 16 TOPS for the NPU. At the current time most applications still use the IGPU for AI and AMD seems to be better supported vs the NPU.

The Ryzen version is a better all-round product vs the Intel version.

@shellshocked: This has been great developing my post purchase confirmation bias.

  • +11

I bought the Ryzen 7 variant of this a couple months back, so my experience with the build quality should be the same as this one, happy to answer any questions for anyone on the edge of buying this that aren't answered in the previous deals for it.

But overall pretty happy with it, screen is okay, honestly don't notice much difference to a similarly priced non OLED for my use case (mostly web browsing and coding where most of it is in dark mode anyway), so likely why. Have yet to have any issues with speed of this thing. Would like to put Linux on it honestly, but the fingerprint reader is the only thing not supported so I haven't yet, but everything else works.

The battery is crap, doesn't seem to charge when lid is closed and it goes to sleep (believe this is just a normal thing for Windows laptops), the trackpad is also really bad and on performance mode and the fans are going full boar, it's quite loud, but kinda expect that. Being able to put it in eco mode or normal mode to ramp the fans down at the expense of a little bit of speed is good.

    • Appreciate this, if you were to do it again any alternatives stand out? Been on the hunt for a new laptop for travelling and struggling to nail one down (high battery life, media consumption and minimal 'office use'). Cheers

      • +8

I got this mainly as a couch laptop and travel laptop for coding on, and for that it's been great. If the snapdragons had been announced at the time I bought this, I probably would've waited and gone with one of those, as those are going to be super snappy and battery is going to be above anything else. But they are a little bit more expensive, so I may not have.

Battery life I ended up just giving up on for a budget Windows laptop, having a usb c PD capable laptop was all I needed. I just carry around a beefy power bank if I absolutely need it, but I know I'd never use it away from a wall for long anyway, so wasn't a huge concern.

Overall very happy though, wouldn't take it back given the price and the performance of it, which is what I wanted, something cheap, but also reasonably good, and this laptop definitely ticks those boxes.

        • I've heard that under heavy usage the Snapdragon X Elite consumes just as much power as its x86 counterparts. Maybe forgoing Windows Recall for Ryzen was worth it?

          • +2

@TeddyBear: Yes, the non-sponsored, through reviews have shown that Snapdragon X Elite can consume just has much power when the CPU is pushed and the so called efficiency of ARM goes out the window at a certain TDP.

        • +1

I also own the Ryzen 7 version but mainly used as a school/docked gaming station for light gaming. Happy to answer questions related to heavier usage to this. For anyone wondering I pull ~350 fps in minecraft with ultra settings and ~70 fps with light shaders

          • @Bobthegamebuilder: What render distance and screen resolution are you playing in? I assume your docked screen is lower resolution than the laptop screen?

            • @Agret: No I play on the laptop screen with additional statistics and YouTube videos on the other screen. I am also playing on max render distance and max entity distance.

    • How bad is the battery life? What is the typical run time you get?

      • +1

As I mainly use it as a coding machine for lightish work, it lasts off the wall for about 2-3 hours. But that's in performance node, doing quite a lot, so I guess it's probably not too bad all things considered. Can't comment on just light office or web browsing battery life over a long time. I think my main gripe with the battery is having it plugged in and lid closed asleep it just doesn't charge most the time

        • Okay thanks, odd that your unit is having those charging issues. Could it be that the USB C port is worn or making an intermittent connection?

I'd be curious to know of other people's experiences with battery life performing light tasks in balanced or power saving mode.

          • @TeddyBear: Id believe that these things don't charge when you close the screen. Try having a fleet of Acers that don't charge or trickle charge if you don't shut them down.
Acers are full of weird and funky and random issues that send IT admins mental. I've got a list as long as my arm of issues.
I'd never touch these machines in a million years purely because they make me suffer day in day out.

          • +2

@TeddyBear: Have this but Ryzen 7 model. Have had no issues with charging unlike the other commenter. Have been using this as a machine for lightish gaming and school. At school it lasts for the whole day and only drains to about 45%

        • +1

Check if the charging is actually stopped after 100% charge and then slowly discharging with the sleep mode…

If yes this could be caused by both laptop or charger, with PD charging you never know

          • @czau: Yeah good idea. It's possible I just turned something off when setting it up and it's not actually sleeping properly. I do tend to run debloating scripts that probably turn off some power saving things aimed at desktops. I thought I had checked and made sure not to do that, but that is a possibility.

But it's not a major hassle anyway, I just plug it in when it's on and it charges to full pretty quick, it's 100W charger I believe

    • Hmmmm. Urgh. These ones are speced so well though, just spend $1500 on a 7840HS system Z16 in 16" but a more premium build quality and just a full hd screen IPS - am I missing something here with this system as even the screen seems way better?

      • Danggggg…

Yeah these 8000mobiles chips looks to be in more laptops and cheaper !

        thoughts on this?

        https://www.reddit.com/r/AMDLaptops/comments/1c47qjh/austral…

      • A customer of mine got this laptop for about $1500 at EOFY

        https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/hp-16-pavi…

I was so impressed with the screen, speakers and specs of the thing I almost bought one for myself but sadly the ram is soldered so it wasn't suitable for me. The 16:10 resolution on that 16" screen is really amazing, feels sooo nice having that extra vertical space.

Seems you can get a lot of laptop for $1500 these days.

        • Damn that is nice specs for the price. I think the price is lower because they always put it in a basic chassis for people who don't care.

          • +1

@CalmLemons: The chassis seemed a lot better than the normal HP Pavilion junk, the "plus" is legit ;)

Still not as good as HP Probook/Elitebook tho

    • Would you know if the RAM can be upgraded.

    • +1

doesn't seem to charge when lid is closed? what ?

      • +1

Yeah after these comments yesterday, just gave it a system wipe and seemed good overnight. I must've borked some setting up or something in Windows or bios, likely with the Windows debloat script I ran must've turned some power related thing off for max performance

        • +1

yeah probably shouldn't run those types of things with laptops. They can be finicky. Desktops would be fine however.

        • You likely killed the usb power on sleep with that script (Titus I assume?). These charge via usb.

  • +5

The OLED display on these Acers is an absolute gem. Highly recommend.

Mine is Intel, so can't offer much else. Looks to be a good deal.

  • +3

    Got one! Love it!

Intel can take a second drive, unfortunately the Ryzen doesn’t.

    • I thought I saw a video saying there's a bit of a hidden m.2 slot in there somewhere? Not the case for the ryzen?

      • Not with the ryzen

        • interesting, good to know thanks, I have the ryzen myself.

    • My Intel 13500H Acer Swift Go 14" cannot take a second SSD FYI. I think perhaps only some of the Ultra CPU models.

  • +2

I have this laptop - bought it a few months back.

Can't fault it other than the Acer software (bloat) on it.

  • +2

I hope the quality of Acers have improved. I had one about 10 years ago and vowed never again. Awful quality and customer service.

I brought an Acer Switch Go?

4GB ram with some Pentinium Gold Chip…

I ended up refunding eventually at Officeworks Haha 😂 Windows 10 and 4gb ram…

Could open like 3x browser tabs max it felt like…

The screen looked kidna crazy gokd tho the way i rmemebr Ed it.

tried streamin kdrama on it or something …. it couldn't decode 60fps or it sometimes could but would stutter lololol

  • This or a used one on Facebook marketplace?

  • Terrible on a lap. Digs in badly!!!

Went the eofy 15.6 16gb 3200mhz i5-12450 6gb 3050 LOQ on a $800 deal - sealed stock thanks bud ! Awesone my needs on a laptop without spending big. Use $$$ later on a nebula pc upgrade deal .

    • Where did you find the LOQ for that amazing price?

  • +1

Nice laptop for a nice price!
    Though looking at benchmarks,
I’ll stick with my 4 year old 4800U thinkpad (with a broken hinge) for now…

But 50-100% faster processors (in some benchmarks) in just 4 years :-O is impressive!

    • When did u purchase that device?

I've got an asus tuf budget gaming series fx505dt-al043t. w upgraded stick of ram.

It has a ryzen 7 3750h 6 core 6 thread cpu w quite sloe performance with vega ten igpu.

it has shit battery life shit keyboard shit webcam shit weight and terrible trackpad.

along w my current brought in 2024.

Lenovo x13 carbon? or x13 yoga or something .
i5-10210U soldered lpddr3 with slow 8gb stick only.

Need a new laptop for uni in 2024.

Preferably with strong igpu performance for strong battery life and good weight where u can use comfortably in ur lap as a laptop and holding it with one hand lol.

I think these new laptops look great with 8th gen ryzen.

I'm just yapping above but any suggestions with $1.5K budget or $1.25k let me knows.

8 core ryzen 7 is it worrth the 8840hs if the battery life is impavted by having two more cores and wodser battery life life due to heat produced by extra cores wjich require more wattage ?

  • Is this touchscreen ?

    • -1

      is the colour purple, orange?

    • No

  • It's big different performance between Razen5 8645hs and Razen7 7840u ?
    I play overwatch2

    • 8645HS / 6 cores is pretty much same as 7640HS
      A 760M GPU

      7840U has 8 cores and 780M GPU

7840U is slightly better / faster
But both are so close you’d decide the laptop on other specs / price

You’d only buy one or the other if all else was identical and one was a bit cheaper or you wanted the extra cores / slightly better GPU at a SMALL premium

    • +1
  • Plastic body… naaah thanks.

    • +1

It isn’t. Think it is aluminium or similar.

  • +7

I just picked up one and its a great machine..just a few quickies for those sitting on the fence..

OLED Screen is amazing and the native res works well at 150% for my eyes..
The 8645HS processor is snappier than I thought (my main machine is a 7840HS with 64gb ram)
16gb ram (soldered, no spare slots) is just about enough for what I do with it as a spare(email, light gaming, trading apps, 15-20 firefox windows opened)
Primary 512gb Nvme Drive provided was a very fast SKhynix (close to 5k reads on crystaldisk, and 3.9k writes)
2nd nvme slot sits under the usb flat ribbon flex cable (with silver foil) and I've got a spare Samsung Evo970 installed easily (slide in flat, not angled, screw already provided)
The case build is great with Aluminium display lid, the top and bottom case appears to be some sort of magnesium alloy and is quite stiff and doesnt bend or flex easily.

Base removal involves 10 torx screws and I just used an old credit card using the corner to start prying from where the bottom case hinge and just sliding it almost vertically all around the case and it should come off easily..

    • So this model definitely has a second Nvme drive? People are saying only the intel does.

      • +1

Most definitely does as I've put in a 2nd drive myself. It's a little elusive as the 2nd slot is hidden under the usb daughterboard connecting flex ribbon cable.

        • +1

          Awesome thankyou!

    • Got mine today. Whats the max storage you can upgrade too ? i want to add another 2tb

      • +1

Pretty sure it will take up to 8tb or bigger in future. The only limitation for most laptops is the single or double sided height limitations. For this acer, there's heaps of space below to accommodate a double sided NVME drive. 2TB will work fine.

        • Thanks for the reply.
How hard is it to install? You said it's under the usb board?

          • +1

@Atomik17: Base removal involves 10 torx screws and I just used an old credit card using the corner to start prying from where the bottom case hinge and just sliding it almost vertically all around the case and it should come off easily..

unlatch the flat ribbon cable on both ends and just lift it off..then put in the 2nd nvme drive. The retainer screw is already inside.

Put back the ribbon cable, latch it on both ends, on the base cover..10 screws back and its done.

            • @rnbwuncn: Cheers for the information. Does it void warranty?

              • @Atomik17: there weren't any VOID WARRANTY stickers on any of the screws.

            • +1

@rnbwuncn: This was the video of the intel version of the same machine which I used as a guide.19sec marker shows that ribbon
              < https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTdRK5aHDGg >

              • @rnbwuncn: I thought the second m2 slot is just below the cooling fans?

                • +1

@Atomik17: underneath the flat white cable. look at the video link i posted. at mark 19secs pause..that flat one thing is the cable. there's 2 brown latches to unlatch on each end and it can be removed easily.

  • Had to send this in for warranty one of the speakers was distorting at high volumes… Officeworks wouldn't provide a replacement only repair assessment so take from this what you will about their build quality/support

  • Hi All, would you take this, or the x360 for slightly more ?

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/hp-pavilion-x360-14-inch-i5-…

What would have stronger battery life ?

    • Swift go is better and has a nicer screen

  • Does anyone know if text clarity is an issue for the OLED screen?

    • +2

There isn't an issue, its very good. If you're in doubt head into an OfficeWorks and check it out.

Ive have this laptop for a few days now and Im really enjoying it.

  • +3

Have a look, this was taken with my mediocre pixel 8a , OLED is native res at 150% scaling..

    • Nice speed on the drives cache area, what does it drop to after the cache is maxed?

  • Guys do buy an M1 macbook w a wjdnows for <$1.5k om oth?

    • Would definitely consider the 13 inch m2 with 16GB of RAM for ~1600.

  • +1

Just got one. Great build quality and the OLED screen is amazing. The only thing that could be improved on this laptop is more RAM and the design of the hinge. The screen has two nibs which when the screen is folded out to a 90+ degree angle, it lifts up the chassis of the laptop. Over time weight on the chassis like from your palm resting might deform the hinge.

The ryzen 8845hs is very snappy!

    • Did you find it super uncomfortable on the lap? Mine just dug in to my legs badly.

      • not super uncomfortable but yeah its not pleasant.

    • I'm tempted to buy this.

I wonder if the ryzen 7 has poorer battery life if the cpu has two more cores.

      • two more cores but at lower clock speeds. It seems like both chips use similar amounts of energy.

  • +3

—Simplified guide to SSD upgrade on the second m2 slot—

    Base Removal Thanks @rnbwuncn

"Base removal involves 10 Torx screws. I used an old credit card, specifically the corner, to pry open the case. Start prying from where the bottom case hinge is located and slide the card almost vertically all around the case until it comes off easily."

    Uninstalling the Existing Drive

Unlatch the flat ribbon cable at both ends and then gently lift it off.

    Installing the New NVMe Drive

The retainer screw for the new SSD drive should already be inside the case. Simply insert the drive and secure it with the screw.

    Reassembly

Put the ribbon cable back in place and latch it securely on both ends to the base cover. Finally, screw the base cover back on using the 10 Torx screws. That's it!

    Location of ribbon cable (image)

A quick perspective for someone thinking of using linux on this.

Picked up the Ryzen 7 8845HS version of this a while back and have played around with it for a few hours with stock standard Ubuntu 24.04.

    First impressions:

    Overall pretty good.

    1. During installation, the installer could not recognise that it was successfully connected to wifi (wifi 6 connection). It was however perfectly connected and obtained an IP. To get around this, I just selected do not connect and carried on. No other issues, I've tested over a gigabit connection and achieved 700mb/s with a VPN running.

    2. GUI scaling can be a bit hit and miss. With just 100% scaling, objects can be quite small and text difficult to read. 200% scaling is the only other static scaling option but it makes things a little too big for my liking. I prefer enabling large text in accessibility options whilst on 100% scaling as it's perfect. However, when I use an external monitor large text is too big.

You can use fractional scaling (125%,150%,175%) but it can cause some compatibility issues. One issue was that Brave browser (and I'm assuming any chromium-based browser) was blurry.

The balancing act is between the fairly unique 14" 2.8k screen and any other standard res external monitor. Just be prepared to play around with scaling a bit. My experience is with a standard 16:9 1440p monitor, a 1440p ultrawide and this 14" 16:10 2880x1800 monitor so definitely not a standard setup.

I am running the 3440x1440p ultrawide through USB-C display port with no issues whilst charging.

    1. Screen "whiteout". On a few occasions I've had all displays go white. I've done 5 minutes of research on this but it seems like there were some issues with AMD devices. This does not happen randomly to me, It will only happen sometimes where significant system events occur. One was loading a steam game whilst at 2880x1800 resolution, the other was resuming the laptop after closing the lid to suspend whilst connected to the above monitors.

On each occasion, I had to go to a different tty to reboot the device. I was able to get limited success restarting gdm but it would bug out almost immediately. Haven't bothered to look at any logs or anything. Keep in mind, switching to a different tty will still allow you to access the system.

    https://askubuntu.com/questions/1437167/ubuntu-22-04-1-lts-w…

Come to think of it, all instances were when the built-in display was enabled and at 2880x1800.

    1. Speaking of Steam games, the 780m does a fine job on proton. I just tried out AOE4 online without any issues at all. 60fps at 1080p full scaling low-medium settings with approx 12.5gb total RAM used (either 5.3 or 6.3gb used by the 780m). Keep in mind the results will be worse with the Ryzen 5 version as it uses the 760m (1/3rd less hardware).

    2. The exhaust is in an odd spot. With the screen open, it exhausts into the monitor. This region of the case can get too hot to touch when under load.

    3. Build quality is alright. It's the mid $50k hot hatch to the BMW or AMG.

    4. So far no compatibility issues that I have come across. Have not tested the camera or fingerprint reader.

Just my impressions after a couple hours of use
