  • Redemption: This credit is non-redeemable for cash and non-transferable. It must be used by the original purchaser and applied to accessories on the initial purchase contract.

          Same, as a 2 Tesla (M3P and RWD Y) + 1 diesel Ford Ranger single cab ute family, I am just so glad there are more ute options that have at least a hybrid drivetrain. The incumbent manufacturers have completed dropped the ball here in Australia with basically no good EV/hybrid options for Utes (I am looking at you Toyota), and they have dumped the old high emission, high fuel use engines on us for years too.

          100% understand that many people really do need diesel Utes and there are no EV options with sufficient towing range yet, but from what I can see most diesel dual cab Utes are just used as glorified school drop off vehicles, and those really do need EV or plug in hybrid options.

                      @MrThing: lol I am not paying for a 300,000 dollar car lol but it would be nice. 2026 is the autonomous laws will be passed in Australia, they have been testing with fully autonomous ford rangers for years (yes actual utes were used to test this) robo taxis and fully autonomous cars aren't a tesla idea they have been tested and implemented by other companies. So regardless if tesla comes out with a robo cab here or not there should be automated vehicles here in 2026 https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/australian-self-drivin… I think you will find autonomy will be a retrofit to any car.

                        @kungfuman: 2026 seems very optimistic for them given they can't even figure out what to do with e-scooters in most cities, and they're going to allow fully self driving cars given our diverse range of roads.. some country roads without curbs or lines - just a dirt track where you pick the smoothest part to drive.

                        easier to test one vehicle under predefined conditions, I wonder if they perform the same when they're amongst 10-20-30% of traffic that includes other autonoymous vehicles. I think there's far too many outliers for them to be let loose in under two years.

                        even a much simpler task like ELK/intelligent cruise control has issues across the range of vehicles.

I am not sure built out Aussie ute's will be legal in Europe either. So if one is legal in Australia, how can the other one not be?

    • It looks really promising, although I'm a bit disappointed it doesn't have low range or a locking differential. Having best-in-class torque is cool, but not having the torque multiplication of a low-range gearbox is going to limit its off-road performance.

          you do know in Australia Telsa is still the top EV in the country, and this is BYD's FIRST hybrid to be introduced to the Australian market. before this it was just pure ev's atto 3, seal, and dolphin.

          it will still hold value.
          Full EVs on the other hand drop in price like a stone in water. Hybrids at least hold value even if it does have a BYD badge on it.

        Lets be honest the ranger development team have been more a figurehead if anything.

        China will literally throw thousands of engineers at one car.

        • Not sure if I correctly understand what you mean but Ranger/Everest development has been VERY much solidly in Australian engineers hand. Anytime someone else attempts take even some small components, they clearly make a mess of it and promptly gets returned back.

    Been following this for a while and I think this vehicle is going to change the ute sector forever.

    If the anti ev and anti china car review sites that are backed by their coal and petrol invested media owners don't completely destroy it's reputation (as hard as they've been trying). I think it's going to do very well.

        I disagree, as the owner of a diesel ranger AND a Tesla M3P it is BONKERS how tribal both groups are. Buyers of each are completely blind to other vehicles strengths/weaknesses. They will ignore reality for a LONG time yet.

          Which is why something like the shark gives people the option of having the best of both worlds and should appeal to everyone.

          You have the option of EV only for daily commutes and the ability to go on longer trips/towing utilising petrol when needed without having to worry about charging.

      This is PHEV which means you don't need fuel if you want safer EV. EVs are 83x safer than ICEs & even more than Toyota style Hybrids (for fire).
      PS. Top UBS engineers found that BYD Seal has top tech & 15% better value than Tesla, 30% better than the EU manufacturers.
      30kWh battery 80-100km of pure electric driving range.
      2 electric motors front & rear. It also has 1.5L turbo-petrol engine that can act as generator for electric motors or directly drive front wheels at speeds above 70km/h.
      The ICE mostly acts as generator for the electric motors.
      However, it can also function as parallel hybrid at higher speeds when the ICE can directly drive front wheels.
      combined power is 321kW with 650Nm of torque.

          UBS is an investment bank. If you're unfamiliar with that industry of course you'd see 'bank' and think they're a Westpac or something.

          Investment banks employ analysts and other consultants to inform their research, often to inform investment decisions. When money's on the line, and at the sum UBS deals at, they're serious about this shit.

        • With regards to battery technology yes, byd is better. In fact they use byd batteries in their cars.

          Infotainment and vehicle technology. The tesla is more advanced as they have dedicated teams to improve those experiences.

          • @Herbse: I am not sure if you need to say "dedicated teams". Tesla is a fully software defined car, the others are not. Not even close. If you ever looked at the diagnostics and the depth to which the system itself can detremine what is wrong in a Tesla, you would know. The others are still coming out with keyfobs when you have your mobile phone with you all the time and makes perfect sense as a key. Tesla even allows you to "code" your own key if want to purchase a keyfob.

        Plus that's an average EV, which I would guess in Australia would have a likelihood of over 50% of containing a much more dangerous NMC battery.
        All BYD vehicles contain much safer LiFePO4 batteries which are almost impossible to catch fire.

        It's a bit like comparing petrol and diesel cars for fire safety.

        Source: I run a battery company and have punctured and overcharged my fair share of LiFePO4 batteries.

        However this is a hybrid, so you still have the risk from the ICE engine on top.
