        • How about a massive muti-story airport parking? This: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c153x5gqv3do
fail more. The amount of brainwashing on EVs by the MSM affecting simps is impressive.

          • @Creamsoda: Haha the fact that you "believe the science" guys are now quite literally, denying the science on this one is amusing, but frankly, not that surprising.

It's completely factual that EV fires burn an order of magnitude hotter than petrol/diesel fires and it's also completely factual that EV fires are self sustaining, in that, they create their own oxygen via chemical reactions, so there isn't a whole heap fire fighters can do other than keep a perimeter and let it burn.

There is a reason building owners are starting to ban EVs from underground carparks, or at the very least, ban them from charging in underground carparks.

I haven't gone into the added toxicity of EV fires. I can tell you, make sure anyone you love knows that if they ever drive past a burning car on the side of the road, as soon as you see it in the distance make sure the windows are up and recycle air is on. Yes it's good advice for any car fire, but an EV fire can quite literally kill you.

You can be in denial and down vote me all you like, but nothing I've said here isn't factual.

BTW, I'm not anti EV. I'd buy one when it suits me, I'm also just not an EV nutjob that thinks everything about them is fairy's and rainbows.

    Earnngs report for BYD soon

    • Haha if you can rely on the numbers…

      • they're probably one of the few EV companies that actually makes a profit because they are so vertically integrated. charlie munger and buffet is no fool

Good timing for people wanting to take advantage of the novated lease FBT exemption for PHEVs before it's removed in April

    • Does the 3/5 years on the NL contract still allow it to be FBT free or only until April 2025?

      • +2

The exemption lasts for the life of the lease as long as you get the car delivered and lease finalised by April. But doesn’t cover extending the lease at the end.

I think the whole fbt exemption thing wraps up in 4 years so that’s the most you’d get. If you want to leave a lease early you have to pay out the finance post tax and the interest you would have paid (sometimes at a reduced penalty rate plus a fixed fee). So you don’t want to sign up for 5 years unless you are sure.

(I just did a 3 year on a sealion because i had the opportunity not to wait 4 months for the grey interior, keen on the shark but it’s a bit too big for me for daily use)

        • Just be sure to read the ATO website thoroughly. If you change employers, that will impact your finance agreement & you'll lose the FBT exemption

          • @dsgfh: Can you direct me to where you read this? On the ATO website, I can only see an example of this occuring for a plug in hybrid leased prior to the April 2025 cutoff, and then a person changes employer after April 2025 and attempts to lease again. My understanding is if you change employer prior to April 2025 you will continue to receive the FBT excemption.

      • Yes! Take 5 years and chill

        • The negative here is that the leasing company will lock you in at todays rates and by all accounts, interest rates will trend down over the next 5 years.

          • @Martyroz: And probably mask their take of a cut off the subsidy in their confusing communications and financial product construction. I found even using the fbt calculator spreadsheet too confusing to figure out wtf is going on.

    • +4

Hell yeah. Personally all I want is for Subaru to start making Brumby's again. I don't understand why people want such big utes

  • +2

I want to test drive this !

You reckon anyone will realise it’s a BYD? I feel like they should have put a bigger badge on the front.

BUILD YOUR DREAMS… easily the corniest vehicle brand name of all time.

      • How about 'commodore'

      • Yeah but it's so bad that I like it.

      • Build you dreams isnt a brand name. Its a slogan. The brand name is Biyadi or BYD for short.

        • If they used Biyandi in their advertising their sales would be triple what they are currently.

    • The earlier BYD models had "Build Your Dreams" across the back as well, they soon changed that.

300kw….. holy moly for a Ute

    • +1

30kWh battery 80-100km of pure electric driving range.
2 electric motors front & rear. It also has 1.5L turbo-petrol engine that can act as generator for electric motors or directly drive front wheels at speeds above 70km/h.
The ICE mostly acts as generator for the electric motors.
However, it can also function as parallel hybrid at higher speeds when the ICE can directly drive front wheels.
      combined power is 321kW & 650Nm torque.

  • +3

    Specs: https://bydautomotive.com.au/brochures/BYD-SHARK-6-2024.pdf

    The pertinent info is:
    30 kWh battery
    ~100km pure electric range
The engine is range extender only? Can't see anything definitive.
8L/100km on engine (60L tank, 700 claimed range)
    7kw AC charging
55kw DC charging (hard to imagine using that…)

    • +1

No it connects to front wheels at above 80kmph

  • +2

Looks crazy good for the price! And yes maintenance might be a problem but I love that it's not just a ev.

    • -8

Much less maintenance than ICE age UTEs ;)
fewer moving parts ~ simpler maintenance
fewer fluid changes, oil, can reduce maintenance complexity & costs
service intervals of 20,000km or 12 months

      • +14

Except this has both… so more parts which is what OP is likely referring to.

        • Yep, EV is great but this is the kind of ute we need in Australia for now anyway, and let's face it most people who get this will be looking for a new car within the next 5 years and by that time maybe an EV would be best.

          • @zacsg1: Range is the biggest reason you won't get diesel ute drivers into an EV now (and lack of charging infrastructure in regional areas). This is the best compromise, wife drives 100% electric dropping the kids to school, but when they go for a long drive into the bush, they can fill up an any servo.

The next generation of EV Utes will have +1000km of range and it will all be a moot point, everyone will just go EV, once you do there is no way anyone goes back to paying for diesel + service costs.

    • +1

Yeah I would rather pure EV, no oil changes etc. but would be way more expensive.

  • +14

    RIP KIA Tasman.

    • +5

Tasman was dead as soon as it saw itself in the mirror.

      • If Kia actually release that vehicle it will destroy them.

        • +1

Kia lost it many years ago their prices are exorbitant especially the EVs.

          • @mustang87401: Agreed. There was a short period of time between 2018 and 2022 where they were offering fantastic looking vehicles for excellent value. A lot of my family who were hardened Toyota purchasers jumped the gun and went with Hyundai's.

But now they've gotten greedy and lost their value for money. Everyone is moving to Chinese brands which are capitalising on their loss.

    • They are different segments though. BYD is a lifestyle Ute and the Tasman is a ladder on frame Ute.

  • +4

Being a plug-in hybrid actually makes this a viable option for many rural users who (quite rightly) have range anxiety. I can see this covering a LOT of rural drivers who usually need a Hilux or Ranger for carrying capacity and the like, but want to save on fuel - and upfront costs as well at this price.

Notable differences in towing capacity for those who care.

    Shark 2500kg
    Hilux 3500kg
    Ranger 3500kg.

    • +14

You know that it's illegal to advertise 3.5t towing capacity when it isn't capable of it out of the factory, but they do it anyway.

3.5Tonne is only possible with electric brakes trailer controller which is not standard on all of them. Plus you don't want to tow 2.5t tonne on the Hilux let alone 3.5t, it's towing performance is dismal and slow like a pig through mud. My old Rogue blew both struts, what shitty Utes.

      • Also while towing the shark is the only to weight more than its towing capacity which is great.

      • So is the Shark only at 2500T with electric brakes trailer too?

BYD,MG, Chery, GWM, LDV…Xpeng and Xiaomi coming soon…excellent money for value vehicles…post Covid these guys seem to have just exploded..I get they are state sponsored but these prices seem a little too good to be true…Not saying they are bad vehicles ..they are too young to have a history..but the rapid expansion on Chinese vehicles has been extra ordinary …the price to feature aspect, even servicability and warranty and spare parts they are good on paper .. I just wonder why then other older proven manufacturers from other countries cannot deliver the same.. they do want to stay in the biz I am sure … something does not add up ..no one sells at a loss without a reason. This is a great deal.. but have a think.. I might be wrong and it is what it is but no business is just going to sit still while competitor takes away the market…yet there has been no southward movement on prices from any proven, existing manufacturer

    • +2

Xiaomi's Tesla Y competitor will be an interesting car.

      • +1

No the SU7 Ultra will ..but again.. I shall wait and see till they succeed ..atm Chinese vehicles sound too good to be true

        • If it's SU7 I guess we only need to update the whole braking system. Can take from Porsche 911.

        • Did you see the price cuts from all the legacy ICE brands in China? They've been taking us for a ride all along…

    • +1

German/French car companies gonna suffocate soon

      • +1

Nah not till these guys prove their worth.. Toyota is still the number in vehicle sales globally ..these are the new kids on the block

        • +1

Yet even as the new kids on the block I'd still put more faith in a BYD than most Euro cars. When you look at the number of Chinese EVs sold vs Euro EVs, I'd say the market is tending to think the same too…

    • Sometimes they don't sell at loss like byd they produce every part like tesla also they can sell carbon credits and they are way more efficient when manufacturing. What is wrong is the aging cars companies trying to sell rubbish for heaps of money.

  • are they electric only? Or got some normal cars?

    • This is a hybrid

      • Plug in Hybrid

The best of both Ev only mode and petrol extended range when needed, worlds.

  • -1

    Just ordered 3

  • wished federal govt extended the novated lease FBT benefits for another year.. wanted to see the 'real' life experience with Shark for an year before and price wars to choose a good PHEV

    • From 1 April 2025, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle will not be considered a zero or low emissions vehicle under FBT law.

However, you can continue to apply the exemption in certain conditions.

      What are these certain conditions?

  • +2

Nothing against Ev or Chinese car makers but PHEV segment in general, is marketed as "The Best of both worlds". But in real world, it could end up as the "Worst of both worlds" for a few unlucky ones. For example, you might end up having the downsides of a ICE (regular servicing, pollution & maintenance costs) + all EV issues (including battery+resale value+range anxiety) at the same time. Just my cynical 2cents :)

    • +1

I'm curious to understand if this applies to normal hybrids too? They're similar in every way and actually worse (smaller battery, can't be charged) but hybrids seem to have a good reputation. Am I missing something?

      • -1

Oh yeah, normal hybrids are the worst kind imho. No charging + normally replace the battery around 5-8 years. Is that fuel saved from hybrid tech significant when you compare the depreciation and maintenance costs after 5-8 years of using it? I honestly don't think do. No idea why people brag about the fuel savings using a hybrid, unless they are counting pennies. It makes sense if you enjoy the ride & performance of that car. I guess that's what really matters.

        • +1

I am not anti-ev or anything. But you are pulling “replacing battery every 5-8 years” out of your behind.

My brother’s 2012 Camry, is with original battery and at 310k. Still getting 6l/100km. He drives with heavy foot though.

Ignoring my personal evidence, if hybrid car batteries were failing this much, Toyota would not be selling them at all. Or they would have folded.

I’m looking at ev/phev in the next two years fyi.

          • @wmxc: Toyota have been building hybrids for a long time now and they are proving to be very reliable over time

          • @wmxc: Great I agree.. no objections on Toyota quality either. I am talking based on the experience of a few unlucky ones (as I mentioned before).. I mean those who had to replace that hybrid battery pack after the warranty period. They had to replace it with their aforementioned "savings". So all I am saying is that getting a Hybrid Camry shouldnt be your life's mission statement :) yes it's attractive as long as you etch that "6l/100km" at the forefront of your memory. Each to their own. Have a nice day 👍

    • Well all of that is correct. You have the best of both worlds and the worst of both worlds.

      • slow clap
  • -7

No thanks… Who wants a Chinese truck that will be worthless in five years

    • 100% but we live in a throwaway society and folks on OzBargain impulse buy shit every day.

    • You mean almost all European car? And Tesla?

      • The European cars starts appreciating in value after 20+ years if it's been well looked after.

  • +1

Good price for Ute. Can’t say the same for the accessories.

  • Thanks for the reminder! waited this for a long time. Saw it's available in the USA. Finally coming in to Australia.

    • Has not been released in US? 100% tarrif on Chinese cars. Is grey imported via Mexico

  • +1

Is anyone really going to buy the upcoming Kia now this has arrived ? This Ute is world’s apart from the Tasman.

    • +2

The Kia is a joke and even they know it. They've been trying to hide the very bad design behind stickers. I'm embarrassed for them.

  • +1

Heck of a lot of car for 60k, far out

    Definitely interested via novated

    • Get a nl company to quote you. The savings are beyond worth it if you're in the market for a car

      • what's the catch?

          • @EitherWayUp: if price is the only metric to gauge quality I guess Harvey Norman's HDMI cables must be 50x better than my eBay ones. damn I've been missing out

      • Yes. There is a catch. The lease company’s team you with fees and extortionate interest rates

  • +2

I'm not even a tradie and want this. Would be a great car to take kids camping/outdoor use. Cheap to run, throw a few bikes in the back, can use V2L to plug in laptops/appliances/coffee machines/projectors for movies without having to worry about it draining the battery. plus FBT exemption this is the price of a corolla after a 2yr lease

    • Tradies with dual cab stylesides are just fakers

      • true..tax deductions for the wives to pick up kids and groceries in

  • +2

I hope these sell. They're still too big but I'll take my local tradies in 1.5L utes over 6L American things all day..

      Under rated post

    • it's not about the size but how you charge it. i'd like to think the chinese+electric would weed out the w@nkers on raised 4x4s monster ute types

    • The chicks love the ranger though. Idk why but they always love it so much when they get in. Doesn’t hurt for sure.

  • Car looks pretty good. But can only tow 2.5k t… So that might matter to a few people. Apparently they might fix that in a new model next year

    • How many times you pull 2 t load?
