      • How often you are around boat ramps and or holiday caravan parks ?
Might be surprised how many do indeed regularly tow 2T+.

    • As a caravan owner I will be interested to see if they can increase the tow load next year.

  • +1

Very interested, my only question is what will the service intervals be like and cost?

    • This will be interesting as the ice only kicks in when it's above 70km/hr. Do they have a seperate odometer for the electric drive train and the ice? And will they have to track hours run if the ice is used for power generation instead.

Because if service intervals based purely on kms run in a traditional odometer is not going to be accurate for the ice and your most likely end up over servicing it if you use it as an ev and plug it in daily.

      • There's a button for the odo to toggle between HEV and EV kms

      • Doesn't the ICE kicking in when the battery level is low or if you've set it to retain/reach a certainly level? It's primary use is to charge the battery as a generator?

        • Yep. In my Sealion 6 the engine kicks in at 25% battery by default. You can set it to be higher if you want.

    • It's every 12 months or 20,000kms, minor services are about $360.

      https://bydautomotive.com.au/service-and-warranty

      • -1

20,000 electric kms or ice kms?

    • Yeah, servicing of PHEV I'm sure will be expensive and very limited to who can do it (qualified or even know what they are doing).

  • i still don't see half as many byds as teslas on the road. Why?

    • +5

tesla has been in the australian market for a lot longer and much more established. isn't that obvious?

    • In the EV only market, even though tesla is more expensive than the byd equivalent, they have captured the market with better technology and vehicle integration with apps and infotainment. This doesn't matter to some people, which are the people who would go for a byd Ev. But people who enjoy updates and tech stuff, the tesla is more appealing.

As for PHEV, tesla has no vehicles that attract anyone who wants Ev only for daily commutes and the option for petrol for longer trips without battery anxiety. So I have seen a lot of byd sea lions recently and I honestly think we will see a lot of the Sharks soon as well.

  • +1

I have a 2019 ranger with a bullbar and seriously considering this as an upgrade. Live in rural town and drive 100k total return to work each day. Plenty of wildlife on the road so interested to see what EV range is once a bullbar is fitted. Hoping can maintain around the 80km range and then petrol kicks in for final 20kms - lets say at 9l/100km - So about $3.60 at $2/L

Currently spending about $20 a day on diesel to get to work. Almost $5k a year in fuel. Charge up on a Sunday during the day with solar $2 lost opportunity on exported solar. Charge up 4 more times in the week overnight offpeak (current power plan is 25c/kw offpeak but hopefully could get an EV or cheaper plan) for $7.5 recharge from the grid. My $100 a week fuel bill drops to $32 + $18 (extra fuel to get home). $2.5k saving per year just on driving to and from work. $25k over 10 years. On a novated lease with 100% FBT exempt the car almost pays for itself!

    • Yep the more kms you do the more you save compare to an ice only vehicle. $20 a day just on fuel is very expensive.

  • Would want to be quick, reports they were already over 1000 orders at 11pm last night. Way more then they expected

  • -3

    FBT exempt.

Utes are FBT exempt per ATO https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/hiring-a…

    You all need better accountants.

    • +5

Utes are only FBT exempt for limited private use. For EV’s and PHEV’s they are FBT exempt even when private use is 100%.

You might need a better accountant?

      • +1

Makes you wonder why a lot of utes are used for school runs and driven by wives. Looks like they never been to work. But you know letter of the law depends on interpretation.

I remember an accountant telling me JobKeeper actually said 30% change in turnover but it didn't specify decrease. So people who increased turnover got it too.

        • Definitely are people out there who are creative with their tax returns and say their utes are mostly business when this is clearly not the case.

  • A lot of car for 60K. I wasnt expecting BYD to price it this cheap. Damn!

    • -2

Really 60k is cheap for a Chinese made and designed car?

They must be right everyone on ozbargain is in the top 5% earners bracket.

I'll stick with my second hand $20k car budget

      • it's a huge car but cheap to run, top spec features, see what else you can get for that money nowadays. with tax benefits it's great value. BYD is the Toyota of Chinese cars

        • +1

Too expensive for me. I just need something to get me from A to B safely and not cost me a fortune to run and insure.

          • @r33tom: 80K-90K ute only costs like 1K a year to insure.

      • What else are we meant to do with all the money we saved buying discounted coffee beans and dyson vacuums? :p

        • If ozbargain is the yard stick for inflation. There is no inflation.

          • @r33tom: Funny enough - back in target range today ).

        • Eneloop batteries and hay fever tablets!

  • Thats basically a Mitsubishi outlander phev feature wise, I expect it will be VERY popular when word gets around.
(mitsi have a bigger engine and smaller battery, but lines up pretty well!)

  • It's about time Toyota and Ford pulled their socks up and developed better cars.
Toyota have been recycling designs for 15 years

    • +1

Isn't that the reason people buy a Toyota? They continue to refine their design in small increments. Parts are reused over multiple generation of cars keeping manufacturing costs down and accessible affordable parts for vehicles that's over 20 years old. Mechanics not having to reskill and can quickly and easily do a repair on a Hilux/Camry/corolla.

  • BYD Shark 6 Engine
The Shark 6 features a 135kW/260Nm 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine, driving either the front wheels or charging the battery pack.

Combined with a 170kW/310Nm motor on the front axle and a 150kW/340Nm motor out on the back axle, providing four-wheel drive capability, the combined maximum power is 321kW and maximum torque is 650Nm.

    BYD Shark 6 Range
BYD's own figures say that in pure-EV mode, the Shark 6 PHEV should deliver up to 100km of electricity-only drive, or, according to NEDC-verified figures, about 800km of combined petrol/EV range.

    • Sounds like a complicated beast. The mechanism to disengage the ice from the drive train and use it purely for charging sounds like a non trivial engineering design and something that has to last at least 200,000+ kms.

Guess if it ever fails you either lose drive from the ice or regeneration. Just hope not both.

      • +1

The IEC engine can only drive the car at about highway or freeway speed. It is done via a clutch and a single gear, this is to increase the effciciency by avoiding converting the output from IEC to electricty and then back to wheels via electric motors.

This design has fewer mechanical complications compared to a traditional torque converter automatic transmission. The Honda Accord Hybrid uses a similar design and has shown no issues with longevity.

      • interesting stats on reliability, Tesla isn't the best to no surprise. VW doing well surprisingly given their track record of electricals

if your sense of masculinity is defined by the car you drive then I've got news for you little buddy

      • ^ haha lmao this is so true.

    • I'd say 'real men' wouldn't make this type of comment on OzBargain.

    • Name checks out

  • Give me a 3L Ford Ranger 2024 for this same price and i would take the Ranger over this anyday.

Would Ford Drop prices? Doubt it.

China will kill off every car maker in the next 10 years if not sooner

    Japan car industry will die
So will European the way things are going

China can mass make millions of cars without an issue and flood entire countries with them,
    Unless nukes start flying

    • Agree I prefer Ford, I think the build quality is still better than BYD but their prices are too high so might go with this.

      • +4

Soo weird. When did ford get a reputation for good quality?

They've always had poor quality build and materials. And last time I checked the ranger engines and transmissions have been failing constantly.

Before the current design ranger, no one touched Ford's for utility cars. The previous gen rangers were basically nowhere to be found. Everyone preferred the Hilux. But once they made the new design and figured out that people will buy a good looking ute over anything else, they suddenly have this aura of quality which never existed before.

Rangers look good. That's all. They're the best looking ute at the moment. I haven't seen anything to suggest they're built better or last longer than any other vehicle in its range.

        • I think if you sit inside a brand new ranger you would understand that the build quality and level of craftsmanship is hard to find in any other Ute right now. Engine wise I haven’t had any major issues including my friends and colleagues but they are new vehicles so shouldn’t be anything wrong with them in general.

          • @mustang87401: Fair enough things might have changed. But every ford I've had in the past has not lasted the test of times.

        • +1

Every single person I know with a current gen ranger or Everest has had engine failures lol

          • @drprox: These are the types of comments I've heard and from people who service them

          • @drprox: And yet, self and others with 20k-50k on clock not had any issue .. go figure.

      • think the build quality is still better than BYD

you obviously missed Ford CEO Jim Farley on his take on the Chinese car manufacturers. Just google his name it's all over the news.

        • Byds built quality including software is not great that comes from someone who has driven one for a year.

          • @mustang87401: Better than Ford's according to Jim Farley. i'll take his words over yours.

            • @Creamsoda: Jim Farley never mentioned BYD is better in any way. He is test driving a Xiaomi SU7 and said positive things about it in general. Not that the build quality is better. This is about BYD. You are all over the place. You are spreading misinformation and disinformation with a weird attitude on top. Goofy

              • @mustang87401: Spreading misinformation? Just because you are ignorant and clueless doesn't mean what i said is "disinformation". His been saying it for years. Ford was never known for it's built quality and tech compared to the Japanese and Germans. the premium segment cars like BYD Seal is just as good as the Germans.

                https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/25/ford-ceo-farley-says-chinese…

                • @Creamsoda: Again you are spreading misinformation. The article you posted mentions that BYD and Chinese car companies are competitors for Ford. You said that the CEO mentioned BYD as the better car in comparison to Ford. He never said anything like that in any way and the article you mentioned has nothing to do with that either. No one denies they are a competition but you said something else.

                  • @mustang87401: You have reading comprehension issues? "Farley said Chinese companies such as Warren Buffett-backed BYD
                    are ahead
of the large U.S. automakers and start-ups on electric vehicles, specifically battery chemistry and other emerging technologies."

    • What a silly comparison, a 3.0 V6 Ranger for $57,900 compared to current $80,000. Of course you're taking a Ranger. Fords Ranger PHEV will be even more due to tariffs from South Africa and will only have a 11kwh battery compared to ~30kwh battery of the Shark.

      • What's silly is someone saying a ford ranger is worth 20k more. Once these get proven and brand snobs realise it no one will buy a ford. Only diehard nut job fanboys. You are speaking like 20k is not much while browsing ozbargain to save $0.10 cents

        • You think a BMW is worth 100k+? You think, insert exotic car brand, is worth xxxk+? That's the current retail price for a Ranger and this is the current retail process for Shark 6.

    • Unless they get tariffed - which is already happening.

I can't see the West and Japan giving up their car industries without a fight.

Tariff wars have happened before and have usually ended in tears - the 1930s being a prime example.

      Watch this space.

      • +1

        Yeah

        Lets see who wins.

        The west is falling

        • Yep, let's see.

Don't write the West off just yet, it's reinvented itself many times. A World dominated by the CCP would not be fun.

          • +1

@R4: No one likes the CCP unless you live with the CCP….but the West is in huge debt and the only way to come out of it is either a war or default. China is expanding globally just look at this EV…that's just one sector…..and check TEMU out……..that website pretty much destroys countries on it's own…….finally what's happening in Israel…..the whole world knows israel is a military outpost of the US which controls the mid east and all the oil that goes through the middle east, they have failed to defend it against Iran…..that tells you the empire is in huge debts and cannot afford a war.

  • -2

Plugin Hybrid is the worst of both worlds. Much better off getting a Hilux turbo diesel

  • -1

Turbo petrol "generator" is just stupid. Diesel generator please.

    • Diesel is not going to pass emissions tests.

  • Crazy cheap might trade in to get this one. Looks amazing

  • They perfectly copied the ford ute, I mean if you were to replace the BYD with RAPTOR you would never know. They truly mastered the art of copying anything.

    • It's faster than a RAPTOR, so didn't copy that …

      • I mean yes that’s not really what I meant. It might be faster but the outside is almost a one to one copy especially the front.

        • and just like the Triton PHEV, they're all got that 'flat face' look.

  • They need the ICE to be diesel if they want any sort of commercial sales.

  • I just hire a ute if ever I need one. Do the likes here reflect a deal for them? The likes can be cheap marketing tool anyway. For new cars I like to wait to see how real owners talk about them. I wouldn't mind sharing about my BYD Atto 3 experience - not bad except some glitches in software. Also phantom braking (google byd phantom braking) is annoyiong. Cruise control is good but lane assisted driving is bad which I now avoid to use. Climate control in winter is bad compared to my older Toyota. I got what I paid for anyway. So far my Atto 3 is a safe car overall.

If you have a lot of sun with Solar - good to get a EV. If you rely on public charging you may need to rethink.

While commenting I realise that this BYD is a plugin hybrid. Not sure what is the impact to having solar charging at home or not. I saw a news about BYD shark 6 orders crashed the website. Was it bad website design or overwhelming orders because of the $500 credit ?

    • My mate has the same qualms about his Atto3 as you did plus he was an early adopter and had that massive aircon issue during the peak of summer.

He’s happy with it but treats it as an A to B car. That’s fine I guess but personally if I’m dropping that much on a car, despite it being an EV, I’d expect standard features as you mentioned to be rock solid.

    • Seems you do not understand the price point, the technology involved (PHEV) and the first ute of it's kind to the Australian market.

  • Price point is good, but the untested and lack of actual production test drive. Bit of a risk, if wanting to do anything beyond Metro activities. $500 isn't much of an incentive, might as well have done nothing over the low ball token effort.

  • Based on carsales, a new base model 4x4 4 door diesel hilux is around $50-55k and a 5yr old one with 150k on the odo is $35-38k. This is the reason people buy them, not the interior design, not the fuel efficiency, not the tech. Just the reliability and the resale. Im sure these will get there, but i wouldnt be buying one for at least 3-4 years personally (unless leasing it maybe). Curious to see the reviews from owners once they are available though!

    • thing is with tax benefits, post 2-year novated lease, if you pay the balloon the 2 year old car ends up costing you about 35-38k out of pocket net (balloon+ net costs during lease). this is not even counting savings from fuel. the trim is much much nicer than the base model hilux which is very basic. this is not a no brand shitbox either, I'd give it a go.

  • 3500kg towing is in development for those needing the extra tow capacity https://www.drive.com.au/news/byd-shark-6-with-3500kg-towing…

    • Yeah, expected will be othe rmodels with more features / better GVM and towing etc.

  • +1

I'll wait for the BYD Leopard - similar spec but SUV / wagon layout!

    • I’ll wait for the BYD meerkat have you heard of that one? Rippa…

      • I'll keep an eye out for when it pops it's head up!

  • So spend $50k and save $500. Which is less than 1%. Why do they bother. Jusst offer a discount!

  • Would love this car and wondering how a novated lease without paying FBT stacks up. Is anyone able to explain it like I'm 5?

    • Chatgpt is good with that

    • You pay for the car and expenses with pre-tax money. But you have to pay fees and interest, which kills lots of the savings.

If you are on a high tax rate you will come out well ahead. Plenty of calculators out there to work out if it is worth it for you.

  • +2

Watched a few reviews and this does look good. To me the feature that is being undersold but I think the tradies (and campers) will love are the 3 powerpoints in the tray and a few more with a cable. Allowing you to run tools and camping gear for a while. It's still 'more work needed' on off-roading (not a power thing, more a software doesn't know what to do thing on mud).

But seeing as many utes are never put through muddy fields and soft-roading at most still a decent market for these.

    • +1

it's the perfect camping vehicle, comes with a battery and quiet generator with no range anxiety.

  • Silly question possibly:
The 800km range, is that assuming you’ve plugged in and charged up with a full tank of fuel, or just the tank of fuel will get you the claimed 800km. Obviously the range is a theoretical range. I’m just wondering if it’s assuming a pre-charged battery.

    • +1

Full tank and battery charged … Real world will probably be around 20% less imho

    • As said above it's fully charged battery + full tank. One of the YT reviews (NZ reviewer) did confirm the 80 kms range on battery only.

  • It is interesting that said 800km range with 60L fuel tank+ battery, so is it actually 7.5L/100km?

Under what condition to achieve 2L/100km?

also is it disel or petrol? not mentioned anywhere from webpage.

    • Like all phev. They assume you will charge like 90% of the time

    • +2

If you drive in EV only mode, you can effectively travel at speeds up to 110kph for around 80-85kms before minimum SOC (state of charge) is reached and it automatically switches to HEV mode. As long as you don't smash the accelerator it will stay in EV mode without issues. Flooring it will over-ride the EV only mode and engage the petrol engine. If you have a full battery and leave it in HEV mode, it will stay in EV mode at lower speeds but engage the petrol motor as needed or when the battery reaches minimum SOC.

SOC can be set manually up to a maximum level of 70%. This helps for when you want to go camping and have most of your battery available when you get there to power appliances etc. The minimum SOC that can be set manually is 25%, as the vehicle wants to maintain that level to ensure adequate power is provided to the electric engines. It can be forced to stay in EV (ECO) mode longer, but only to about 15% if absolutely necessary.

To be clear - the car cannot run without the battery - period. You cannot run the battery down to 0% and then use petrol, that's impossible… it doesn't work that way. The petrol engine is just a generator to power the electric motors. You will run out of petrol before you run out of battery.

      So in effect:

EV only mode - 0L/100kms (up to 80-85kms range - going no faster than 110kph)
HEV mode with full battery - 2L/100kms (up until it hits minimum state of charge)
HEV mode with minimal battery or set SOC level - around 7.9L/100kms (depending on how you're driving, hooning or 4WDing will obviously increase that figure)

The vehicle requires Premium Unleaded petrol. It is not a diesel ute.

      • +1

Hi Arcticfox, thanks a lot for the information. Relly learnt from it.

        • No problems Cai,
I hope that helped clear some things up for you :-)

Hey guys, Bitcoin has sky rocketed again and I was thinking of cashing out 1.3 BTC and ordering 2 x BYD Sharks. One of the wife and one for me. I bought my BTC many years ago in 2018 for $10k each so it's great value to cash out now at 10x. We have never liked Utes and never owned one because we are cheap and always bought a Corolla and Camry Hybrid for it's high resale value and cheap on fuel that lets us upgrade every 4 years for a cheap price as the Corolla and Camry Hybrid resale value pretty much get's 70% of our cash back at upgrade time. Hopefully the BYD Shark maintains 70% of it's resale value in 3-4 years or else we will lose a lot of money on this purchase come resale time and will have to go back to a Camry and Corolla Hybrid but because we are buying this with Bitcoin wealth, I guess resale value does take a back seat and we can enjoy this vehicle even if the resale value tanks after 3-4 years and just keep the vehicle long term like 6-7 years.

    • You are a dreamer alright. At least you got that right with your username.

  • I love the AliExpress style descriptions of its features.

    High-integrated high-performing off road chassis.

    What does that even mean?

Long-travel double wishbone suspensions stabilises Shark 6 around corners.

    Much stable.
