You likely will show up as an existing customer, but I said they only care about new numbers, they don't care about people.

    • anyone got a suggestions for quick cheap sim alternatives to port into this deal with?

    • You're eligible if you have an existing account! In fact it makes our lives easier. However you couldn't keep that phone number. You could come in and sign up for a new one. Or port out for 30 days and come back.
System flags within that time frame and removes the gift card so nothing sketchy chief.

  • It says "when you switch your number". Just to double check, can I assume that I can just get a new telstra number (that I can cancel) and I don't have to actually port a number?

Also, do we know if there is any similar deal for the 256gb?

Edit: I can see now that it says new and port in customers. So I assume anyone can participate by just grabbing a new number.

    • +1

Yes I just signed up for a new number on the same deal for the XL, no issues

  • Waiting for a similar deal but for iPhone 16. Hopefully it won’t be too long.

    • +5

lol. Why do you think iphones retain their value?

    • These deals are usually supplier funded!
So apple being apple, and knowing you're gonna buy it now matter what, will never do these deals.

  • +3

New to doing this (sign contract and break with lower cancellation fee). Any challenges I should be prepared for when I cancel? 899 is a steal price for this device..

Also does trade-in work with this deal? If yes, pls help with the 'how'.. This could further bring the price down by a few hundreds :)

  • +5

Too bad this deal doesn't apply to the 256gb model. 128gb is really not enough these days.

    • +1

Yeah I can't believe this is only for the 128gb. They just know that the 128gb won't sell maybe?

      • +3

The poster neglected to add that it's $1700 off pixel 9 pro 256 and 512gb on the same $99 plan. News and ports only!!!

        • Thanks, so how much would be the upfront cost with this $1700 off if I wanna buy 512gb version on $99 plan?

    • Simply get $128GB in this deal. Don’t open it, and next day return it, buy 256GB pay the difference and get $350 GC as well.

      • I need the receipt to return it right? Not sure what form of receipt I'd get by going with the plan. It's unlikely to show the RRP.

        • A lot of people did that for the earlier deals for 9 Pro Xl and S24 Ultra. You do get full refund equivalent to RRP in form of GC.

    • Plenty for me. Photos are huge in raw so I just back them up every few months like you should anyway

  • +1

I'm not really getting how this deal works sorry, can someone help explain how to get the phone for $899?

    • +9

Sign up, pay $99 upfront for first month, cancel via JB Mobile/Telstra chat, $766.59 invoice

      As simple as that

    • +9

Basically you when you sign up to the $99/M Telstra plan for 24 months, you get the phone for $0. So now you have the phone, and you're on the $99/M 24 month plan. However you can cancel this plan (literally straightaway once you get home), and you have to pay $766.59 (cancellation fee) + $99 (first month charge that you can't avoid) = $899

      • ohhh i see so you're technically paying $899 for a $1347 phone. haha niceee

        • +6

          No 899 for a 1699 phone

          • -1

@dogsryummy: Catalogue says $1347, website says $1699, could be that the website isn't updated yet

            • +1

@Stormzors: The $1347 is the non Pro version. The Pixel 9 Pro is $1699

        • +1

$865.59, but yes correct. That's exactly how I got the google pixel 8 pro when it came out :)

        • Well they can put up any price they like on RRP these days.. Remember however that these phones devalue really fast. If you are really keen to get the max mileage out of it by using it for 3-4 years then yes go for it! (might as well get 256GB if that is the case)

      • +7

        $766.59 + $99 = $899

I'm not math surgeon, but I spot a problem there.

        • Yee, I can't edit my comment anymore :)

      • -1

What tax invoice amount you will receive? Can you use it for tourist gst return?

Could you return the phone and get full refund?

        • no, and no.

        • My understanding is that you can use it to get tourist GST return. My receipt shows the full cost of the Pixel 9 PRO paid for with $1697 gift card. Make sure you ask for your name to be put on it as it is over $1000.

          • @StealaDeal: Don’t you have to declare the gst refund once you’ve returned to Australia?

            • @Demarcus cousins: Maybe look it up on the website?
You think you have to pay it back again when you arrive back?

  • +2

What type of tax invoice do you get for the phone? Does it indicate the price of the device? Just wondering if it's good to submit to my employer for tax reimbursement

    • +7

Yes you get one with the full price with GST showing.

    • +1

Also do you get a receipt for TRS claim?

      • +2

Remember that even if you did claim TRS on $1700 you'd need to declare it on return. Can probably only do that (and avoid paying it back) if you're travelling together with your spouse and you pool your duty free thresholds.

        • +1

Thanks. I mean it'll be a used phone by the time I return in a few month's time so I guess you can't really call it a $1700 phone.

Also how would they know I claimed TRS on it

          • +4

            @ccir: They don’t it’s just a scare tactics.

          • @ccir: They have your passport detail when you claim right ?

          • +2

@ccir: They flag you on the way out. I got pinged coming back in to show if I brought back (phone). I did, but said I was travelling with 2 pax so could claim it fully. Dont be fooled to think they cant check you.

            • @starburstyellow: Yup, as long as you are above the duty threshold its ok.

            • @starburstyellow: what does it mean by "travelling with 2 pax so could claim it fully"? Also, when heading out what reason did you give saying you wanted to claim tax back on a new phone? It's a gift for someone?

              • @Flintz: you can claim anything over 300$ just do it.

              • @Flintz: You're allowed $900 of duty free. Phone was over $1.5k. so my wife and I bundled our limits together so to not have any issues inbound.

                • @starburstyellow: Not an issue either way. I know people that have spent many thousands and claim the 10% trs back at the airport.

          • +1

@ccir: you have 60 days to claim TRS when travelling out.

          • @ccir: It's used sure - but is it used enough to discount it by almost 50% to get under the $900 threshold? I think they'd be cool with saying your "used" $950 item is no longer more than $900, but calling "used" doesn't automatically push it under the limit.

    • +3

Yes, it will show the device price minus the Telstra discount (which will be displayed on the receipt as "online gift card").
So there shouldn't be any issues submitting the full amount.

  • This is probably a good deal if only you want to use this as a home internet gateway. Not many homes would use more than 300GB/month even with a Netflix subscription

    • +7

i think the deal is that you cancel the plan as soon as you join it, so that you pay the $899 cancellation fee for a phone that's $1347. Not sure if I'm riht, but I think that's the gist of it.

      • Yes, you are correct. No point to keep the plan.

    • +2

Very easy to use 300GB. Working from home and a bit of Netflix and it will go quickly.

  • +2

When you cancel, can you pay the cancellation fee using cards

    • +2

      No

      • Damn.

  • After the Android 15 update, my P9XL has been buggy as. Finger print freezing and the phone feels much slower. Camera crashes for no reasons.
I've gone back to S24U even though I liked the P9XL so much. But I need a phone that works

    • Weird. I have no such issues instead A15 has bumped up the battery life a bit.

      • +1

Agree. Using P8P on Android 15 and getting excellent and improved battery life compared to Android 14

    • My pro XL is absolutely fine after the update, no issues so far.

    • P9PF here and no issues after update

  • +1

When signing up at the store, do you receive the phone immediately, or will it be delivered later?

    • +4

      Immediately

  • Has anyone had any problems cancelling before? Pity it's not 256gb.

    • +1

Nope. JB HI FI themselves are aware of this loophole :)

      • Awesome thanks!

    • I think you get 12 months free trial of google one 2tb plan. So just backup the media and just keep the apps on the phone. Not sure but I got it with P9PXL.

      • Thought this too. I have 95gb used with very little to no media on my phone as I'm already using gcloud. Think 128 is just too low…

    • -1

Simply get $128GB in this deal. Don’t open it, and next day return it, buy 256GB pay the difference and get $350 GC as well.

      • Wait how would this work? How does return work with a phone that cost you $0? What amount do you get refunded?

        • The way it works is that phone does cost the retail price to you, and then you get a GC for signing up for the plan, which is used to pay for the phone.
Once you return the phone, you get the price of the phone back in form of a GC.

You get the Retail price back in form of a GC.
Please make some efforts and search for comments from OZBs who did that without any issues for 9 Pro XL and S24 Ultra deals.

          • @OZBsince2018: So essentially

            $-766.59 + $-99 = $-865.59 + $1697 = $831.41

and then you can spend that $831.41 on anything at JB HI FI. Hmmmm seems like a glitch in the system

            • @Mani88: You get the Retail price back in form of a GC.

The way it works is that phone does cost the retail price to you, but you get a GC for signing up for the plan, which is used to pay for the phone.
Once you return the phone, you get the price of the phone back in form of a GC, and keep/cancel the plan and pay the ETC plus first month 99.

      • What about if you return the phone ? How much they gonna refund you ?

        • +1

You get the Retail price back in form of a GC.

            • @sekhon147: If any store manager refuses to give the full refund, simply make a complaint to JB Hifi Head Office via a call or email. This worked for so many in previous deals. They can’t not refund the full amount.

              • @OZBsince2018: Thanks mate. Would you receive a full amount $1679 invoice when you purchase the plan? Will it shows the plan in invoice as well?

Could I get full refund of the phone in gift card? And howuch do I need to pay 256g?

              • @OZBsince2018: This kind of shit is going too far in my opinion

    • +1

There is a $1700 off for that model! Same plan, $1 more in benefits. Also works on 512gb. Same dealio, news and ports only

  • +1

I have jb hifi gift cards. Since the "cost" is technically $0, can I assume that there is no way to use gift cards? If it's possible somehow, please let me know :)

    • +1

That would be correct. Since you're not paying JB HI FI anything, you won't be able to use the gift cards.

  • -8

Cancellation isn’t worth it if you pay more than $35/m for your sim

    • +3

who on ozbargain does though ;) most of us are swapping each month or using ~$15/mo boost/catch/etc plans!

      • +1

I pay $14.16 p/m on the woolies $170 yearly plan and get 10% off groceries. With the amount of formula and diapers that I buy, I am actually profiting from my plan.

  • +21

I get the urge to buy the latest and greatest, and then I remember that my 2-year-old phone is literally fine.

I basically never noticed lag or any issues that might cause one to upgrade.

    Fight the consumerist impulse!

    • My S21 camera has started being crap. Never should've stopped using Pixels.

    • +3

I would be keeping my phone if it weren't for the 3g shutdown… Will wait till 1st November to see if it actually stops functioning though

    • I've been in the market for a decent camera and esim for 2 years. I think is the time to take the plunge for me

    • +2

I upgraded from 12 pro max to 16pro max cause my battery was on 80% and thought it be good to upgrade. Only key point noticed for me was mainly that the speaker was a lot better. My co worker showed me a video from their Samsung phone and I’m like wow the quality is soo much better…. Co worker said it was a 5 year old Samsung phone ….. I was shocked 🤯

  • If I port from another provider and cancel to get this deal.

Do I lose my number/service as it will be in limbo?

    • +1

Port it back out, or just get a new number since you're gonna cancel anyway

    • +3

You need to port out you number if you want to keep it. Porting out = cancel the plan.
Just cancelling without porting out = lose your number.
But honestly, just get a new number.

  • +6

Gonna put this here for those FAQs :)
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/866578

    • Should be added to the deal description.

  • Personally 128gb = no deal.

    • +1

128gb is fine if you have turkey storage

    • Big surprise but we agree, but google sent us so many 128gb phones for some reason so it's the flagship.

DW tho same deal on 256 and 512, just as $1700 off.
      News and ports only.

  • +1

I don't get why these deals are limited to new/port in customers. I'm on a SIM only plan with JB Hifi so… (profanity) me apparently?
