Buy or wait till check if my poco x3 won't work after

    • +4

Or buy an Amaysim sim, get a $200 voucher and then buy this for $39.

      • +2

I'm on Amaysim but no voucher.

        • They have been giving out vouchers to those phones in use which they think are not compatible for the 4G

          • -4

@RotiYS: Based on the comments here your mileage my vary. I've got vouchers every time though. It looks like the G54 is currently out of stock from Amaysim so you will need to get another phone they sell if going down this route.

            • @DOGGYWOWWOW: I did try 😞 no luck for me so far but I might try a few more phones if I can get my hands on them

          • @RotiYS: I am being nagged by Amaysim for my 3G phone but no voucher yet. I would buy it with voucher discount.

            • @search: Have you tried asking them for a voucher?

              • @BROKENKEYBOARD: You mean via reply email or chat? I will try asking to their 3G email.

                • @search: In the voucher deal/thread plenty of people including me got a code through online chat. Email should work too but it's be way slower.

      • -1

I got it for $9 with Amaysim

        • How did you get the refund? When I asked they refused since it was bundled with a phone.

      • Can you cancel the plan immediately after purchasing the phone?

        • Yep, just disable auto-renew. Anyone can use the plan for a month if needed.

    • +1

I'm waiting to see what happens too. I wonder when they will block the IMEI

    • No need to wait, it will not work.

      • +1

My Poco F3 does, I had to install a custom ROM for it to work though.

        • How do you know it works? 3G hasn't been turned off yet.

          • @User0001: Because I haven't received any texts from Vodafone, they've already switched off their towers. But I guess with emergency calls they can use any 3g towers so I'm not 100% in the clear. I'm hopeful because I've seen a lot of people with Kogan/Vodafone already getting bombarded with warning messages that their phone will be disconnected.

        • +1

yeah, but I don't think installing custom ROM is for everyone though

    • +1

Check this out, I was able to get mine to work with VoLTE will test it after the shutdown too.

  • The code seems a part of rewards extra.
    Better mention that if so.

    • It does not need extra. Look at past BIG W deals.

      • +1

        It does. Check the code.

        • Works for me, no extra here?

          • @Tiggrrrrr: how did you get it to work without extra

              • @when2buy: How did you get it? Mine keeps saying to link to a rewards card

                • @LuthLexor: LMAO i got my brother to buy it and use his i couldent log into my rewards thing spent way to long trying

  • +4

Don't forget to use discounted BigW gift cards for extra 5% off

  • -2

    177 g (6.24 oz) weight

    • +2

      Is that good or bad?

      • +2

It's a very light phone for it's size. I've got the 'Indigo Blue' which has a plastic frame and silicone polymer (eco leather) back. Judging by the pictures, the midnight blue variant seems to have a standard plastic backing.

  • blows my mind that this phone came out mid 2023

  • +4

Was $179.10 a few months ago.

    • Try FB-marketplace, Gumtree, ebay etc ?
      3G-shutdown: keep-away from parallel-import ?

    • -7

      It's called inflation hun

  • -7

Not really a bargain if it's been significantly cheaper several times and likely will be again.

    Great phone though!

    • +15

It's been over 3 months since we got a good deal on the G54. So for someone who's been waiting, they might just want a phone at this point!

  • -1

what was the lowest so far?

    • +7

$9 for existing amaysim customers with a code

      • +1

        Wow

      • How did you get the refund? When I asked they refused since it was bundled with a phone.

        • u dont need to buy the $30 sim. u just need an existing account

    • I paid $29 net, and forgot $6.5 Cashrewards.

    • +7

$150 on jb perks few months ago

      • +2

$140 for those that used the $10 welcome voucher

        • and more if you used discounted gift cards etc etc

  • +12

I don't get why this model is so popular here. It's a mediocre phone with an atrocious camera, definitely a downgrade from my previous Poco X3 Pro.

    • +2

The 3G shutdown caused some panic, with some people believing that they need to buy mobile phones from local sellers.

      • +3

Yes, and I'm one of these people. I hate this phone..

        • +4

Do not do it, it's definitely a downgrade from Poco X3 Pro,

    • -1

How is it a downgrade? Specs seem better on G54?

      • +1

The camera is absolute garbage on G54.
I can't get the screen brightness right, with or without the adaptive brighness.
Somehow it struggles with touch gestures? Say, sometimes I swipe right and it recognizes it as a swipe down.
And I think I generally prefer MIUI, it's a lot more refined than pure Android.

        • Delete some random stuff then reboot the phone .
Or just reboot, seems to fix touchscreen issues.

        • +2

Don't have those touch issues. Had my phone for about 3 months.

        • +2

Agreed with everything until you mentioned MIUI.

          Anything over that UI.

    • +9

      This x1000
I bought this phone and it performs horribly, I've had low end xiaomi phones 10 years ago that performed way better than this.
Ozbargain missed with this one, I'm salty

      • +2

current ozbargain crowd recommends a lot of crap, i think frugal smart shoppers have been diluted by retail therapy junkies

        • -1

That’s why I don’t trust online people anymore. People are weird

    • As much as I hate my X3 Pro due to the lack of updates and knowing it's likely to brick any day now, I agree, the G54 is a downgrade…

I was travelling and purchased the G54 as a backup for the X3 and to use it on the bars of my motorbike to run my maps, it's 'ok' but it's a bit of a dog compared to the X3, handy having esim and such though…

The G54 also seems a bit fragile, I've somehow managed to crack the screen even though I've never dropped it… My X3 Pro has been dropped, accidently thrown, and kicked around and it's still all good…

IMO the G54 is a good backup and/or travel phone, but probably not the best choice for a main phone…

      • -1

Try a glass screen protector , dropped many Motorola phones including this one and had to replace screensavers, but screens have been fine.
It does benefit from regular restarts if you have “stability” issues.

        • +2

I've not used a screen protector for maybe 6 years. Never cracked my screen. I've always used a case that has edges that sit a millimetre or so in front of the screen. I've dropped phones many, many times and the case has done the job. My wife insists on getting a screen protector for all her phones. After a month or two - cracked screen.

          • @banana365: Your Wife’s phone has a Glass screen protector or plastic?

            • @beach bum: Over the years, both. The ridiculous thing is that the glass protectors have also cracked but the screen below hasn't. Screens are generally tougher than many expect.

              • @banana365:

Screens are generally tougher than many expect.

                Except iPhone

          • @banana365: This. A protruding lip case is the best way to protect the screen. Can be hard to find but totally worth it

        • Glass protectors are better against scratches but offer ZERO break/crack protection.

          • @nikoris: Sorry but you are plain wrong here. A good glass protector has saved my phone and family member's phones on many occasions.

It is just simple physics that the force of impact is taken by the glass protector and then spread over a larger area, so that by the time the force is transferred to the phone's screen, it is no longer a point load, but a distributed load. There is no guarantee that the phone screen will not get damaged, but it sure reduces the chances of damage.

            • @billy_bob: Half knowledge is worse than no knowledge. A 1mm glass is not absorbing anything bro, THAT is simple physics.
It reduces like, what, 2-3% of the impact. You wouldn’t put glass protector around your car bumpers would you?

              • -1

@nikoris: You do you bro…..and I'll keep using glass screen protectors. Everyone is free to make their own choices. I'm just sharing my personal experience that it has saved at least 4 phones in our family in the past 3-4 years.

                • @billy_bob: You didn’t save nothing, it’s a myth. Here’s an experiment for you to educate yourself.

Take two pieces of glass, and on one apply a screen protector. Start hitting them with a hammer gradually harder until both pieces break. Observe.

                  1) It takes very little force for the screen protector to break, probably with the very first gentle hammer hit.

                  2) both glasses will take the exact same force to break, despite the screen protector applied.

It ‘literally’ blows my mind that people don’t get this lol

                  • -1

@nikoris: What, so you are negging my comment because I am sharing my experience with other people? No class bro.

                    • @billy_bob: I’m downvoting because you’re wrong. You’re sharing wrong information.
Screen protectors are just fragile. There’s no ‘load distribution’ it’s literally just 1mm glass. There is no load distribution in the first place, more so when the protector actually breaks.

I'm comparing on GSMarena to my old LGv30 and a 6 year old phone has a better screen, albeit a bit smaller, and many other features that outperform this g54. Still hunting for a modern phone with a high res audio DAC and 3.5mm port.

      • You're not going to find it, unless you look at Sony.

      • +1

        ZenFone 9?

    • +1

funny i use it as back up phone rather than my old x3, they seem pretty similar but the battery is my x3 is pretty awful now.

for $30, it still seems like a bargain

    • +1

I doubt people buy it for the camera as it is still a budget phone

Other than that the other specs are bang for buck

  • +3

G84 is far better, for not much more.

    • +9

No esim on G84 makes it a hard NO for many people.

      • +4

esim is super handy. Rented a G54 to use in the States specifically for this; easily signed up for free esim trials, free data FTW!

        • +3

You "rented" a G54 for free data? I just used my G84 and bought a cheap $10 sim.

        • +2

Serious question, whats so difficult about physically replacing a Sim card?

Don't understand the true benefit of an eSim.

          • +2

            @smartProverble:

Don't understand the true benefit of an eSim.

eSIMs are tied to your phone's hardware, so it's easier to "track" the person.

eSIM on the other hand, can get different phone numbers very quick, ie. within minutes,
you can activate plans and swaps numbers, without needing to wait for SIM cards…or even look for SIM cards.
Imagine, you arrive somewhere overseas…and with the press of an App, and Paypal payment,
you already got a phone number without talking to anyone, or needing to show passports, etc.

I am not advocate of eSIM, but I see why it's beneficial for buyers, sellers, … and three-letter agencies.

            • @whyisave: Thank you. So essentially it is convenience that some people can't live without.

              (Do you sleep?)

            • @whyisave: 3 letter agencies… Took me a long minute to figure out that KGB is a 3 letter agency!

          • @smartProverble: the plastic waste?

      • +2

The OLED screen is far superior. LCD is a hard no for many, hard to go back.

    • +1

cant find cheap g84 before 3g goes rip

    • The G84 has got to be the best value smartphone around ,and if you can wait it will probably end up being not much more than this phones price when it goes on sale again.
The G54 is just the cheapest.

      • +1

        But… but G84 doesn't have esim.

  • +1

InB4 someone mentions the 3G shutdown. Damn too slow.

  • Is this good as a handheld emulator?
