      This a PC. Not really the same as a phone.

      • -1

        I was trying to say steam deck looks **** when I could remote play everything lol.
        People could've easily used that spare cash to upgrade their infrastructure.

    I've had an OLED since this deal. Was still a bit on the fence about how much I'd use it given I have a very capable gaming PC (5800X3D, RTX 3070).

    I use it all the time. SteamOS is generally pretty fantastic in terms of games on Steam, but it's also flexible enough for tinkerers. I've been playing all sorts on it; Zenless Zone Zero works amazingly well (I installed via the HoYoPlay launcher). Diablo IV via my Game Pass sub through Battle.net has been a blast, and HDR looks great on the OLED. I installed RetroDECK for emulation and have been playing the Gran Turismo 4 Spec II mod via PCSX2. I (re)bought the Ace Attorney games recently and played through a bunch of the first game on my Deck and it was a way better experience than when I played back through it via Xbox Cloud Streaming.

    I opted to upgrade the 512GB SSD to 2TB, and have a 256GB microSD card for emulation.

    It's surprisingly versatile! It's not the most powerful handheld, but I'm extremely happy with my purchase. I would only consider a different handheld if it was notably more powerful with similar or better efficiency than the Steam Deck and had an OLED screen.

    For those interested in installing Windows for games that don't support Linux, the OLED also has (as of recently) a full set of Windows 11 drivers available: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/6121-ECCD-D643-BA… - glad to see Valve finally come good on this 'promise'

    • Is keeping emulators on sd card just to make it easy to transfer?

      • +1

        Not really, as the Steam Deck formats the SD card in a way that a typical Windows PC can't read. It's more about keeping the internal storage free for much larger Steam games.

        • awesome - hope you don't mind answering a few questions re- emulators - have you tried switch games and how is the performance for the more demanding ones? mario odyssey or zelda tears/breath - i sold my switch lite but really tempted to pull the trigger on this

          • +1

            @Securityclearance: No worries, happy to answer what I can!

            Regarding Nintendo Switch emulation, I haven't tried it out on the Steam Deck myself. I've mainly been emulating older 3D systems, e.g. PS1, PS2.

            However, Retro Game Corps has a quick guide on Switch emulation including some links to user-sourced compatibility lists for Switch games as well as some tips and tricks (such as using the PowerTools plugin to disable SMT which can improve performance in some games).

            One option for Breath of the Wild is to instead play the Wii U version via Cemu instead of the Switch version. I'm not sure if this is a better or worse way to play BotW these days - early on in the Steam Deck's life, I recall it being a bit better in terms of performance. There appear to be mods aimed at the Switch versions of the games (e.g. TOTK Optimizer that may improve performance and/or features - but it won't be as "plug and play" as a Switch ever will be.

            • @tmr3: thanks for the information, appreciate it - will dive into this stuff you've mentioned

          • +1

            @Securityclearance: Switch emulation works fine although good luck in getting binaries for Ryujinx or yuzu. Mario Odyssey works fine at 60fps as does Mario Kart. Havent played Zelda so cant comment.

  • +1

    Cna someone explain why this is getting so many up votes?

    • +4

      Valve never released it officially in Australia due to our consumer laws. The prices they are releasing at are signicantly cheaper than the import price from resellers on Ebay and Amazon so we should see all prices drop from this

      • +2

        Valve never released it officially in Australia due to our consumer laws.

        From what I've seen, mostly from Lawrence Yang it seems like the Steam Deck's release here was mostly due to getting the logistics set up. He said it in some video back in 2022 or something and he also said it in this article. If we take Valve at face value then it would be due to logistics, did they maybe prioritise us less because of the issues they've had with us in the past? Maybe but it's not definitive if we want to give Lawrence the benefit of the doubt.

  • +1

    Is this going to be available at retailers? Got a JB store credit, would be perfect if that's the case

    • +4

      I would get it if JB sells it. Easier warranty claim via jb.

  • I only play DOTA2 and even then I’m only a noob. Is this worth getting? I don’t have any other gaming consoles

  • I have a few rare items in CSGO along with about 300+ cases, does that mean if I sell them the credit in my steam can actually purchase this item???

    Virtual money to purchase real physical item? Really?

    • Did you make a profit buying cases? Always hear about some ultra rare skin being sold for ridiculous prices.

      • I didnt buy any, its all free weekly drop off I just didnt sold any.

        I did open about 50 cases but very lucky i got 2 rare knife and 1 handwrap.

    • +1

      Yes. Exactly what I did.

  • Has anyone got experience making Epic or Xbox pass work on the SD?

    • +1

      Epic and GOG works with a third party app

      • +1

        I use NonSteamLaunchers on github

        • Just need to download Heroic launcher and it does Epic and GOG out of the box

    • I've successfully run some of my Battle.net, Epic, GoG, and Amazon Games, games, and also installed Discord with overlay.. I don't currently use Gamepass so haven't got around to trying it.

  • Everything negative I've said about the Steam Deck can now go to rest.
    Finally, GabeN has manned up and is releasing it here down under.
    Hopefully the warranty and all Australian consumer laws will be honoured here.
    But I'm finally going to buy one soon!!!

    • manned up

      I see you 👀

  • So how doed this compare to say pc or console. I see so many like for rrp, is the a great device,

  • Please excuse my ignorance, isn't the LCD model the older one? I thought the OLED model (which is newer, I think?) suppose to be better?

    Is it worth the price difference between 256GB LCD and 512GB OLED if I'm going to end up installing 2TB SSD anyway?

    • +3

      Correct. Bigger, better screen. Better battery life, among other things. They still offer the LCD model as a cheaper ‘introductory’ model I think.

      • +1

        Thanks. Is the price difference worth it if I'm going to end up installing 2TB SSD anyway?

        • +4

          Absolutely. Better battery life, better screen, lighter, better resale, screws that don't strip, quieter fans, runs cooler, and so much more!

    Our Lord, who art at Valve, GabeN be thy name.
    Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in homes as it is at Valve.
    Give us Lord our Daily Deal, and forgive us for our scams as we forgive those who scam against us.
    And lead us not into console peasantry, but deliver us from Origin.
    For thine is the Steamdom, the Gear, and the Engine, forever and ever, in Freeman's name I pray,
    GabeN

    • +3

      That is so….steamy…and valve-y

    • Gabemen.

  • Oh wow about freaking time!

  • Eventually they'll even have refurbished models!

  • -7

    how good are these things as mini pcs?

    i thought they were similar to a 7840u but apparently they are only quad cores, pretty disappointing

    • Clearly not understanding the point of this device as a portable gaming machine.

      • -8

        oh really, it's a portable gaming machine, what makes you think that?

  • I've always wanted one, but ideally I'd like something that can play Fortnite, which I don't think this can without jumping a lot of hoops (and I read people have still not been able to get it going). Would I be better off with either of the Asus RoG Ally or Lenovo Legion Go, or something else? But then, not sure I can play Steam games on those.

    • +2

      They're Windows machines. They'll play everything.

      The Ally X is the one to get.

      • Thank you - that's the conclusion I came to as well

  • +1

    this is great news for those still waiting to purchase one.

    would have gotten the 1TB model, but already got one from Kogan earlier.

    for what I have been reading before, they were all right, I should have purchased one when the Oled batch got released.

    with a bub around, this is really a great handheld, atleast for the games that I would play. the switch was good but very limited in terms of its hardware.

    hope to see more SD owners here in Australia. 😊

  • +5

    Just sold $1100 of Dota 2 inventory on the marketplace. Very keen and waiting now

    • What playing game can get real money now???

      • Dota 2, and Counterstrike mainly

        • I don't play Dota 2 and my experience with Counterstrike is limited so excuse my ignorance, but to have accumulated $1,100 in inventory on a game like that is this primarily derived from many years of grinding or is it just recovering money that you have injected into the game via loot box mechanics or similar to buy the inventory in the first place?

          • @Wuggle: I'm considering selling my CS investments

            ~~~$2k
            CS2 sucks a$$
    • -1
      what mmr nub?
  • -5
    Big if true.
    • It's on the official steam website, what do you mean if true?
    • Welcome to October
    • poor comment
    • I +1'd you. These people dont appreciate the classic meme's.
  • As I have an LCD version already I'm tempted to wait on this - but would love an OLED one.
    I wouldn't put it past Valve to soft launch the existing models here and then drop a new upgrade worldwide in about 6-12 months time, post Super Switch.
  • What about screen burn in? If you leave your steam deck say afk charging or something with a static screen
    • +1
      A few Youtubers have done burn in tests on the Steam Deck OLED. Yes, there is burning on the OLED but this is after a significant (hundreds) of hours on a static screen where they usually use a custom program to hold the static image. Normal usage is never likely to get remotely close to what they're simulating.
      Here's a recent one of the Switch vs Steam Deck OLED. But if you search on youtube you'll find quite a few videos and they explain how long it took for burn in.
      • +1
        Really cool video thanks!
    3 days to go and still no date..
    • +1
      …yeah I’d have hoped to have a date by now. Unless it’s just available come Friday.
      • +1
        It's not an exact date but in a tweet they said it was coming in the middle of November. :(
        https://x.com/OnDeck/status/1844531054012710945
        I'm hoping it comes sooner though.
        • +3
          I stayed up late last night in hopes that they might have released on Nov 1st, but unfortunately not.
          Would be great if they could give us an estimated launch date especially now that we're already in November now.
    • The 256gb LCD model is now available for purchase on the Steam Deck page. A good sign that the OLED models will be added soon.
      • All 3 models now seem to be gone from the page. Presumably was some sort of testing.
        • i am a bit worried now. I hope they don't jack up the prices.
  • +2
    insert waiting skeleton meme
  • The longer it's held back, the more attractive the Legion Go and the Ally X become. Especially around Black Friday deals and stock clearances/ New models.
    Newer GPUs, newer competitors are around the corner, especially for the Steam Deck which is now a Late 2023, 15-17W 6nm Zen 2 chipset (due to exclusive production deals with PlayStation 5 and Xbox, their newer RDNA APUs were held back until Zen 4, and the Strix Point has small efficiency and performance changes.)
    versus the 30W Zen 4 Ryzen Z1 Extreme (in the Go / Ally X), that also has FSR and frame-doubling,
    and the Ryzen AI HX370 Zen 5 that has a 10% to 25% bump in speed, and double the CPU cache, threads over the Z1 Extreme.
    HX370 Laptop testing indicates it would be a 10% to 25% FPS bump, along with Zen 5 improvements. But, that 15-20% FPS bump applies in the 17w portable mode too.
    e.g. https://www.notebookcheck.net/How-fast-would-the-ROG-Ally-X-…
    Especially recently that the Legion Go sales in the US dropping the price below USD$500 / $900 AUD, and the price drop on the original Ally (due to concerns over repair faults and hardware faults in the original model.)
    The addition of a 7" Legion Go Lite, and a 8.8" Gen 2 with Dual Fans, is likely what people are speculating is the reason for the price drops . e.g. https://www.notebookcheck.net/New-Lenovo-Legion-Go-gaming-ha…
    If so, there's no launch date and Christmas puts it right around the most difficult time.
    • With Buzzite, yes. Otherwise no.
  • for anyone wondering when it will be available… its around mid November.. Source:
  • Thoughts on 256gb lcd vs 512gb oled? First time deck owner thinking of buying it to game at a friends house instead of hogging a laptop or desktop.
    • +1
      OLED all the way.
      Bigger battery, better processor, much better wifi, larger screen, and of course, OLED panel with HDR. There is NO reason IMO not to go with the LCD anything when the OLED is available, except if you MUST get it with bigger disk space off the shelf.
      • Ok thank you very much
        • +1
          np, GL dude or dudette!
  • If I bought a SD from kogan for example, would I still get local support from valve for any issues or would I still have to send back to original seller?
    • +2
      Don't quote me on this, but I'm fairly sure Valve would still help.
      Typically though—especially for imported, non-locally available goods—you have to go to the retailer, but I'm sure Valve would be down. It's one of the reasons I chose them over the Ally.
  • Well… (profanity). Sure makes my $1299 from (profanity) Dick Smith sting a bit (albeit almost a year ago now!)
    • Was that 1tb or 512gb?
      • 512 - I wanted the TB but decided to spend that same amount as the upgrade on parts FOR the deck, so got an official dock, screen protector, and soft case which I actually really like on it. Figured I could upgrade when a good deal for a short NVMe disk (like https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/874717 !) came along instead - another reason I went Deck, knowing I could upgrade in the future!
        • +1
          Yeah I paid the same for my 512gb OLED too. No regrets
          • +1
            @theguyrules: Honestly, same here! Though the $400 less would certainly be nice back in the pocket, lol!
  • Wow, people really love gaming. Here I'm who still only plays on a 10 years older Wii and only game Wii Sport.
    • +1
      For some people gaming is their main hobby, so something like a Steam Deck isn't as expensive as it seems. For me, at least.
    • +1
      To be fair, a lot of people play games like Powerwash Simulator, or Factorio for days on end. Form and Function is a critical thing. If you don't have that balance / mesh, the product fails.
      Steam Deck is that Ideal for some. Tablet Gaming never achieved that peak/crossover with the iPad due to touch controls, but this size and weight mix seems to work.
      Stardew Valley often has more people playing than some AAA shooters, and they're just refreshing their farms, fishing and … /shrug. Living that Animal Crossing like quasi pastoral existence. For different reasons.
      Keeping in mind, the Wii was a pioneer in motion control for the time. Nothing's really challenged that supremacy of simplicity apart from the Switch games and party / fitness games. Mobile Gaming never took off in strides because people want down-time to have some meaning / relaxing aspect. Couch Gaming is about the immersion, so is Motion / Athletic gaming.
      However, you should probably look into the universality of the Meta (Facebook) Quest 3 and their no-nonsense VR if you're still playing Wii Sports.
      It's still relatively early, but it has that same zeitgeist that the Wii had back in 2006. Steam Deck is sort of in that sweet spot that the Switch had back in 2018, but it's always been limited by the Console Hardware spec needing to be close to the current hardware. The hardware is now up to speed that it can deliver 25w-30w heavy-load VR performance,
      The batteries are the next frontier on delivering that much power, but it's the next area of development, because of the Weight & Heat issues with power delivery.
      Putting a PS5/Xbox Series X in a handheld is where the 2025 handhelds are reaching for now. Making it affordable is the next challenge. Same problem that the Quest 2 and 3 have, because putting that much cutting edge in a portable unit isn't enough, it also has to be practical/light/long-lasting. And the games have to be fun or reasonable for the 15-20 minute format(s) that make it fun and challenging for beginners and veterans.
      • Thanks for explaining and suggestions. Back in the day I loved PSP over PS2 but couldn't justify it's high price compared to a full PS2 or Xbox 360 console. But that's just me as I'm more into actual sports played outdoor and use Wii only when weather is not conducive to play a sport outdoors.
        I need to look into VR option for Wii that you suggested. I did a demo of a VR at those outlets in the shopping centre but felt it was too unrealistic and not even close to the 3D movie experience at cinemas.
  • +4
    They tweeted out an updated release date: November 19th, 10am AEDT
    https://x.com/OnDeck/status/1853954152977903982
    Should also be on the store page now.
    • +2
      Dang. Honestly didn’t think it would be that far into the month.
      • +2
        That late in the month, I'd wait a week more. Maybe it'd get discounted for Steam's Autumn sale or Black Friday.
        • I'm also really curious if they'll do a discount on Black Friday.
  • +1
    Wonder what shipping timeframes are like
  • Shipping timeframes are going to be a factor.
    One month before Christmas doesnt leave much wriggle room. Wonder what the idea was to pick this date
