that is a deal my friend!!!

  • +31

I literally cannot recommend a steam deck enough. It is by far, hands down, the best handheld device I have ever used. Genuinely made me start to enjoy games again.

    • +1

I see this sentiment a lot on Reddit but how is it any different to sitting in front of your PC playing with an Xbox/PS controller aside from the neck pain you get from looking down at it? Like you are still just playing your Steam library? Can you explain for me thanks.

      • You can play in toilet. :) as an example. I dont have SD

        • If that thing ever fell into the toilet, the tears would be monumental.

      • +4

        Fantastic Support by Valve.
        Effective Emulator.
        PC on the go.
        Well made.

          • +12

@HangryCakeStore: Portability not necessarily in public - but around the house, bringing to a mates, road trips, flights, etc.

        • Less likely to get distracted by ozb and reddit

      • +2

Yes, it is as if you're at your computer- it is just that, a portable linux based computer. You can switch to a more standard desktop mode so you can use it like any other computer really. Extremely easy to set up emulator games via Emudeck. I installed Filezilla and started to download movies off my server almost as soon as I got it. Very powerful little machine. As for neck pain, no, not really. I'm sure if you looked down long enough at anything though you'll end up feeling a bit sore.

      • +1

For me it's really simple. I can lay down on the couch and play it more comfortably than I can my PC.

      • +4

        Quick sleep and wake.
You can put it to sleep and resume while in a game. It takes about 2s to sleep and 2 to wake up. I can quickly continue my RDR2 session for 5 - 10 min while waiting for my wife to do whatever before we go out. It takes 5 min just to launch the game on PC. It uses about 10% battery per day while sleeping.

Of course, it's mobile, so you can take it on your commute if you have one, or the car wash while waiting or wherever else. I will sometimes put in a quick 15 - 20 min in bed before falling asleep.

My wife sometimes just wants me to be close by, so I'll lay on the couch gaming while she watches Greys anatomy or something.

Of course there's cloud saves, so you can continue playing your game when away from your PC.
Sometimes you don't feel like sitting behind a desk when you work behind a desk all day and you would rather lie on your back and game.

It's a backlog slayer of note. I've completed 3 games since March I wouldn't have played otherwise.

        • From your first line I thought you were saying whenever you wake up you can have a quick game.

… then you did say you take it to bed :)

I got one from the last 899 deal. Absolutely loved it!! Let's see how quickly they will be sold out this time.

I really want to buy one, I just know its probably going to mostly gather dust if I do.

  • -8

Kogan has this for $769 - any issues getting it off them?

    • +7

      That’s the LCD version

    • +2

don't think that's the OLED ver

    • +7

      lol, username checks out.

    • +1

Just shocked at how this post attracted so many neg votes. Honest question and grateful for the answer but gees people, show some love for this enquiring mind.

  • +1

    How many unit?

    • +1

According to the listing there are 60 units available at the moment.

      • +3

        knocking everyone else over

*oh no you don’t! Those oled steam decks are mine!

  • -3

Wish Kogan had a great deal like this I’m still iffy with eBay sellers and supporting the warranty on the SD

    • +6

Unless things have changed, pretty sure Kogan warranty is spotty at best

    • +8

You must've had some EXTREMELY bad eBay experiences if you're looking to Kogan as some kind of bastion for upholding consumer rights……….

      • +2

Nah not me just been reading over on the steam deck Facebook group someone buying a SD 64gb and the eBay seller wasn’t upholding the warranty and telling they to contact valve

Just puts a bad taste in your mouth

        • And that’s why we need to pressure Gabe to get off his high horse of morality when he’s been called out for it by the ACCC and release the Steam Deck in Australia.

Otherwise we’re just enabling sellers to refuse upholding our warranty and consumer rights just because the original manufacturer doesn’t have a storefront here for those products.

If Gabe really wants to present himself as the saviour of PC gaming, then he needs to learn that by not selling the Steam Deck here, he’s enabling all kinds of bad actors to sell them instead and scam customers with terrible warranties and return policies, and thus he has failed in his (supposed) duty as the saviour of PC gaming.

        • That was one person and now you think kogan who takes 24 hours to reply.to you via email is better ? Lol

  • +8

If anyone wants to upgrade the storage in this the WD SN740 2TB SSD is back instock and dropped down to another record low price of US$88.50 (~A$133.60) or US$86.52 (~A$130.62) with AliExpress Coins.

    • I got one of these for my 64GB Steam Deck from a previous deal. Incredibly straightforward to clone the original drive and swap it out for this one.

  • I'm not familiar with handheld gaming. Can you play games from other launchers other than steam? Or any older games without launchers?

    • +1

The easiest click and play solution is installing games from the steam store. But you can absolutely play games from other launchers. Heroic launcher lets you install games from epic and gog. And its mostly click and play.
In general, some games are tougher than others to get running but theres a wealth of resources online and I have yet to find a game that you can't get running outside of online games with anti-cheat.

      • How well does the controller work compared to keyboard and mouse?

        • Depends what sort of games you're trying to play. If you don't usually play games with controller you might find it limiting.
Steam does have community layouts for controllers which can work very well for some games with no native controller support, and even make some games playable which weren't designed with controller in mind. But it's never perfect unless the game has native controller support.
For example, playing grand strategy games like stellaris is not the best experience on the steam deck. But action rpg games like the witcher are perfect for it.

      • +1

Sir, for this recommendation I am in your debt. The last piece of the puzzle for me was getting Epic and GOG up and running on my Deck. Someone tell my family I love them, for now I can game until the rapture!

  • +2

LFG!!!!!! This pricing in AUD even beats USD prices!!!

  • Great device

    • +2

      Can’t stack promo codes I don’t think.

Just found the Steam Deck Facebook group post for those who are interested in warranty issues

Seems this user purchased their SD from this eBay seller Mobileciti and they wouldn’t honour the warranty

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/331836675154237/permalink/96…

    • Doesn’t mobile city post on here ? Waiting for their reply before I’ll purchase

      • -1

Yer would love to hear their response to this seeing this issues is with them

        I’m guessing we won’t get a reply

        @mobileciti @Mobilecitiau

    • +5

      Hi Twisty

All Steam Decks sold by Mobileciti come with a 12-month warranty.

I'm unsure about the warranty issues because I can't read the group message.

      • Thank you for replying
At least that puts things at ease

Can you confirm how many will be available at this price tomorrow?

      • +2

12 month warranty but you're still bound by the ACL. If the device stopped working after 2 years without damage from the user you would still have to either repair, replace or issue a refund.

    • Heres their reply,

      Hello,

      Thank you for reaching out.

Please be informed that this Valve Steam Deck 64GB Handheld Gaming Console is covered by Valve warranty for 12 months AU wide. I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your Steam Deck. It's frustrating when multiple buttons are not functioning properly, especially after trying a factory reset without success. Here are some additional steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

Try other Games/Programs: To confirm the problem, try to check if the issue still occurs with other programs and games on your console.

Inspect the Buttons: Carefully examine the buttons that are not working to see if there's any visible damage or debris that may be causing the issue. Use compressed air or a soft brush to clean around the buttons and remove any dirt or debris.

Update Firmware: Ensure that your Steam Deck's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can address software-related issues and improve the performance of the device. You can check for updates in the Settings menu.

If the issue persists after trying these steps, it's best to contact our Valve service center for further assistance at https://help.steampowered.com/en/wizard/HelpWithSteamDeck. They can provide advanced troubleshooting and provide options on replacement or repair under warranty. In the event that they refer you back to us, please do not forget to obtain a case/reference ID for our records.

      Kind regards
      Ivar

      • But wouldn't Valve said we do not officially sell in Australia so no warranty for you?

        • Depending on when it was purchased then imported to Au it would have a standard 1 year where you send it back to origin of purchase for them to repair or replace

      • -1

Mobileciti said they will cover it for 12months and then you have your Consumer Rights here in Australia for an additional 12 months. That’s the law in Australia and all businesses have to agree to it for a item of this price

        • +2

          ACL has no time limits.

          • -2

@interfreak: Apple always tells me 1 year warranty then an additional 1 year with Consumer

        • Totally understand how consumer laws works, it sounds like they've palmed them off to Valve which is shitty and illegal. They should be delivering it to valve at a cost to them. Maybe they need additional training to staff if they're selling bulkloads

  • God damn this hurts to see - but I am excited for people to be able to get one too.

  • +1

That's a very good deal. Oh man. I'm trying to hard resist

  • Anyone else holding off getting a steam deck due to the lack of freesync?

    • +1

      Lack of $ :)

    • +1

I'm waiting for the Xbox handheld for better compatibility with game pass

  • Same people buying this seem to have a ps5 collecting dust from fomo

  • +1

Temp but also scare to buy $850 gift cards and miss out

    • What gift cards?

    • +1

You won't have time to fill in all your gift cards to finish your purchase if it will be limited stock (most likely it will be).

      • Redeem gift cards in advance not possible? (Not familiar with eBay gift cards)

        • +1

No, only at checkout. You can, however, buy something small with a gift card and then remaining balance will be saved and available later by a single click.

  • Wanted to buy a SD on my Japan trip but this here is very tempting.

Now I'm wondering what Black Friday can bring us…

  • +1

Wild they arent selling them officially here yet…

    • +3

Valve is still buttburt about when the ACCC forced them to change their "no refunds" policy to comply with the law. They practically refuse to officer customer service for software that is basically free to distribute. No chance in hell they're going to risk selling hardware when they would actually have to provide warranty support

  • Woooooh it's here! Finally!

Shame I'm broke as (profanity) ATM lol

  • I'm sort of torn between this and the ROG Ally….

Convince me which is the better overall system!

Would play some light AAA games (GTA 5, maybe some more modern ones) and emulation.

    • +2

If you are not concerned about the cost, wait for more detailed reviews on the ROG Ally X. Spec wise it appears the better hand held. Otherwise if price is a concern the Steam Deck.

Overall I would say Steam Deck, as for me battery life would be a higher priority than playing AAA titles(I have a computer for that) Steam Deck in my use is a secondary device to kill time and play on the go, so being able to play it over a weekend away for a couple hours here and there away from mains power makes it the better choice. Then at home you could always use Steam Link to stream games for your PC. Even if you have fewer low power consuming games in your Steam library the money you would have available compared to buying a ROG Ally you could boost your Steam library quiet a bit.

    • Look at the 0.01% frames on battery power. The SD delivers smoother gameplay, at a cheaper price with more convenience.

  • -2

Will appreciate if someone can get a screenshot of discounted price :D

  • Ouch this hurts. Just paid for the 256gb LCD version for $692 yesterday. It's already shipped :(

  • On a side note, anyone manage to get one of these to download at intended speeds when connected to a 5GHz wifi network?

    • I got the same problems as you. I can't get it working as proper speeds. :\

    • For steam games yes. For other launchers like GOG or Epic it's super slow.

    • Absolutely no issues with 5GHz wifi at all, mine works perfectly and downloads at full speed — for me, that's 90Mbps on TPG FTTB (non-NBN). TP-Link Deco AX5400 X73-DSL modem router.

    • +1

I usually get around 65MB/sec (yes, megabytes) on my 1gbps fibre connection

  • +5

Thanks for posting the deal. Very tempting but not sure I can justify $855 to my wife just so I have yet another device to spend longer on the toilet with.

Already have too many toys and not enough time to play them all so suspect after the novelty wears off after a few weeks that it will just go on a shelf and collect dust with a dozen or so other handheld game consoles.

I really don't need this…. can't justify it….. must save my money for other things I've already committed to buy this month.

OK, Hopefully I've convinced myself NOT to buy this deal by writing this out but will see if a night's sleep makes me rethink!

    • Don't worry. With 59 units available, chances are you wouldn't have been quick enough anyway.

  • -5

Hilarious how positive Ozb is on steamdeck in contrast to GPU.

Barely a discount on 2year+ old hardware but just a fancier screen and people get excited. Then soneone lists a GPU and it's all bitching and moaning about how it shouldn't be over some fantasy price.

    • +6

You can't buy modern good GPU for $850. But you get the whole PC for $850 if you buy Steam Deck.
