If you've recently picked up a cheap Steam Deck or another handheld like the ASUS ROG Ally then here's a good deal for upgrading the storage. Stack with 12% cashback at TopCashback and AliExpress coins for further savings.

This works with other devices that only accept 2230 sized SSDs including Surface Pro 9, X, Surface Laptop 3, 4, Laptop Go and more. Since this is a Gen4 SSD you shouldn't use it with the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro 7+ due to stability issues. Both of these have no issues with Gen3 SSDs.

This one offers a sequential read up to 5150 MB/s, sequential write up to 4850 MB/s and uses Toshiba BiCS5 112l or SanDisk TLC flash. Unfortunately 2230 sized SSDs don't have DRAM cache, but this one uses pSLC cache and HMB to make up for it so it's perfectly fine for gaming. Especially when a lot of other similar SSDs are QLC.

AU$ based on current Mastercard rate and GST inclusive.

There's 22 available at time of posting and the seller may restock later.

For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

So many fake SSDs on Aliexpress - how can anyone buy with confidence this isn't fake or defective?

    • +7

The fake SSDs on AliExpress are ridiculously easy to spot. This SSD has been proven to be real numerous times.

How is it "ridiculously easy" to spot from the link you posted??

        • Around US$10 for 1TB and US$33 for 64TB. Generic and no brand either.

          • @Clear: Right, sorry I didn't pay attention to the listing regarding size of the drive.

Funny many feedbacks from buyer are positive until they can't write large file to the drive and that will be how they found out they have been scammed.

            • @samehada: I bought one once just to see. It had a USB to USB-C adapter with a small USB 2.0 flash drive glued in. The enclosure ended up being quite useful once the drive was removed.

Just test it when you get it. Aliexpress return policy is very good, anything wrong just send it back. Anything with the 'choice' label is a vetted supplier so I wouldn't be concerned here.

I placed an order of 3 items from AliExpress. Only 1 arrived. 2 items did not arrive were handled by the same courrier that did not even try to contact me for delivery. I tried to contact them twice and never had a human to solve the issue. I tried to get the refund from AliExpress and only 1 seller was honest and refunded. The other one refused and AliEpress froze the transaction for security reason. What an experience

        I think you mean Amazon…

        • They are functionally the same anyway. Same sellers operate on both, and both companies have similar structure as far as the end user goes; profits and maximum margins at almost any cost. Same for Ebay, Etsy, and so on.

All of the drive serials in the review photos appear to correspond with the correct product, for what it's worth. Not sure if anyone would bother going to the effort of making fake labels with multiple correct serials, but stranger things have happened.

I don't think these really have proper warranty coverage from WD though, given I can see one with a build date of 28/10/23, but WD says the warranty expired on 01/12/23… Which isn't too surprising for OEM part, but I'm just not sure why they bothered with 1 month. Maybe for the bathtub curve.

    • its pretty easy
if its too good to be true its probably fake

      $10 for 64tb - fake
      $50 for 512gb - real

  • ++ just for your avatar

Are you trying to say that if we cut down the 2280 sized Samsung down to 2230 it's going to work in the Steam Deck? /s

The devices I mentioned will only take a 2230 sized SSD and anything bigger won't fit. :)

    • Your drive is a 2280 this is a 2230 which is less than half the length. This drive is good for tablets and gaming consoles like the steam deck.

    • I saw the 980 pro 2TB for these prices last year. But did it come this down to these prices recently?

  • this makes the choice to buy the 1tb vs 512gb OLED even harder to make

    • I was thinking the same thing. Not sure if the special 1tb case and anti gloss screen is worth it instead of spending that same money on a 2tb ssd upgrade.

    • I went with the 512gb and upgrade the storage with one of those SN740s to 2TB (+512GB microsd) just because I didn't want to get the non glossy OLED screen.

I would have liked the upgraded case though.

  • Would this be suitable to install in a portable m.2 enclosure? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/874727

Just be writing movie files and playing them off a TV USB port

    • Probably not worth it. The regular sized ones don't have the heat issues these can have

  • But how to ensure you're not getting a fake product?

    • +1

I've never heard of a fake WD SN770 and this store has been posted many times.

      • Might not be fake but it might be a DOA one. After experience a DOA WD SN740 2230 before from Aliexpress. Not buying it again.

Not the same seller but still too random

    • I bought one and it's sitting in my SD working nicely. I guess it's always a risk, I was happy enough to take it though as my 512gb kept on running out of space. I've still got the drive and can easily swap it back if needed :)

    Thanks OP, pulled the trigger

  • any suggestions on a enclosure for this?

  • it's welcome deal again, how to pass aliexpress checking and make another welcome :)

  • Did you really have to post this so soon after the previous deal? :-p
Now I feel like I missed out by not holding.

Great little disk, bought it with the external enclosure @Clear posted previously.

For those doubting, I did a full write/read test successfully. Disk did become a bit hot during the test, but does fine for my usual use case.

  • 5150 instantly brought Van Halen to mind. Think I'm definitely living in the past :)

  • I purchased with AUD using paypal with prices quoted from Aliexpress in AUD.

Would I have been better off paying in USD for some reason?

I didn't read the comments about USD at the bottom of the OP post.

    • Yes, you would have been better of paying in USD with a no-international-fee (credit) card.

      • I forget this trick every single time

  • Genuine question, so not everything on AE is a cheap knock-off ?

    • Of course not. Thousands of legitimate brands can be found.

      • Thanks. I was always a bit dubious about outlaying big bickies there.

  • Is it M key?

    • Yes. B key is SATA.
