Steam Deck 256GB LCD $649, 512GB OLED $899, 1TB OLED $1,049 Delivered @ Steam

5750

Technically now an OzRRP post, but Valve officially announced the Australian release of the Steam Deck, shipping next month. Cheaper than current sellers so potentially some deals there if they drop their prices to sell their stock.

About time, hoping that if they do release an Index 2, it will be available in Oz from the get go

    • +29

      And then Half Life 3

      • +2

        Confirmed! Woohoo! (/s)

      • +3

Best I can do is Half Life Alyx: Episode 1

        • Exclusive to Steam and compatible only with Index 2

    • +4

I don't know if this is just wishful thinking. But part of me is thinking (hoping) that they have a set of new things coming out (index/deck/etc) and so they are expanding their market into Aus first before doing so.

      • +3

God, I cannot wait to upgrade from my ancient Index to whatever they have in store. Just shuddup and take my money.

        • I'll take the Index controllers off you ;)

          • +1

@notaccel: Hah they've gone through quite the journey, still work great but sure ill remember your name.

        • -1

surely the quest 3 is the one to get right now

certainly tempting coming from the rift s

          • +1

@desync: The PSVR 2 is the go if you have a ps5 and a pc. The OLED screen is a game changer for stuff like Alyx

            • @piston3461:

The PSVR 2 is the go if you have a ps5 and a pc. The OLED screen is a game changer for stuff like Alyx

but many good features of PSVR 2 i won't work with the PC and only works with the PS5.

              • +1

@pinkybrain: That’s true , but no other VR headset has those features anyway. Even as it is it’s a great PCVR headset that only really the Quest 3 and big screen/pimax can compete with. also possible they get enabled later

“We wanted to be able to sell it through Steam. And part of that is that we’re hoping that the investment we put into the infrastructure would allow us to sell future hardware in Australia much faster. We just want to do it once and do it correctly and pave the way for future things.” said Aldehayyat.

“Now that Australia is part of our hardware shipping regions, now that we’re all set up, it’ll be for all of our future hardware as well.” continued Yang.

Was gonna link the same article but saw your comment. Lots of great info from that. Interestingly Valve is still improving battery life for LCD. They do look after their customers

“So we have SteamOS 3.6 coming out soon. It’s going to have, depending on this game and depending on this scenario, like 10 to 15% extra battery life for LCD. said Aldehayyat”

          • +2

@bheart: Surely the increased battery life would also extend to the OLED model too. 10-15% extra for the LCD is great, but all the optimisations and changes cant just be for the LCD hardware, there must be some that would flow to the OLED too (i fully recognise its more than just the screen thats different between the two models)

            • +3

@Eatoff: Probably not. With OLED there aren't really any optimisations as the screen hardware itself does that for you. Unless they went though and added more black pixels to the UI, but that would be a negligible amount of battery savings.

          • @bheart: Also:

We are continuously investing in, even, like, first-generation Steam Deck LCD. So we’re constantly pushing software updates, firmware updates, all the improvements that we’re able to get out of the old OLED, we always try to port it back to the LCD.

That's really good to hear from Valve (although I'm biased as I own the LCD). There must be heaps of LCD Steam Decks out in the wild, it only makes sense for Valve to keep customers happy. I wonder what the current split of active LCD and OLED users there are, surely there'd be at least 30-40% of users on the LCD Steam Deck.

            • @Ghost47:

I think LCD market would be bigger since it was hyped product and the price was competitive/good value especially the 64GB version.

The OLED is has good improvements but it is more expensive
and not every who has LCD would be upgrading to OLED (more likely to wait for steamdeck 2)
and also also the market/competition for better Portable gaming PCs have increased alot more now,

Steamdeck OLED does not really improve the gaming performance compared to LCD model
so many newer games are not going to play all that well on either models.

        • Now this is good news.

  • +7

    Woohoo!

  • +25

Didn't expect Steam to officially release the Steam Deck in Australia…

Also good opportunity to use Steam Wallet/Credit from Community Market Trading too.

    • What’s an example of $$ people have managed from cards?

      • +4

The big $$ would be from trading in-game items from CSGO/CS2, TF2, DOTA2, etc.

        • Ah cheers. That’s not me then - haven’t missed out

          • +3

@WhyAmICommenting: Generally speaking, it's around 15% off (-/+ 5-10% maybe, depending on if you know what you are doing) flipping in-game items (buying from sites using money and then selling them on Steam Market for Steam credits). It's fairly easy and good almost instant discount.

      • +1

Literally just from cards I was up to 200 bucks at one point years and years ago.

It was a different market and a different time then. I can't remember the last time I've actually gotten a foil in recent times whereas I used to get about one every month or two back in the day :/

  • +9

Damn, happy for it to be more readily available in Australia. I started with the LCD model and have since upgraded to the OLED - one of my best gaming purchases ever.

    • +2

      Agreed, such a good device.

    • I have a LCD model. Was the upgrade worth it?

      • +4

As someone who went from the Switch OLED to the Steam Deck LCD, it was worth it to me. Need to weigh up the cost vs benefits for yourself.

      • For me definitely. There's a lot of minor improvements as well as the major screen upgrade. It's probably not if you are only playing very occasionally or mainly docked.

      • +3

The undocumented improvements (Better battery life, upwards of 90fps cap, manually adjustable refresh rate, better cooling/less fan noise etc,) made it worth it for me even regardless of the screen difference.

    • how much did you sell the LCD model (which model) and how much for?
and where did you sell it?

How much did you pay for OLED model?

From what I seen there is no noticeable gaming performance improvement (so some LCD owners are waiting for steam deck 2)
or sold it to get the OLED.

It does make it harder to justify sell LCD model at a loss to then pay double or more to get the same gaming performance (but get nicer display and better battery life etc)
when there is now more powerful alternative options selling at similar or cheaper price to the OLED model.

  • +17

Also refurbished one will be 20% cheaper.

    • +4

100% will get the refub later!
or maybe (hopefully possible) marketplace will have 2nd hand for $400 :D

    • No refurbs available yet, but that will be awesome when they happen!

  • +15

I assume it is finally possible to purchase a steam deck with steam wallet funds? Finally the years of gambling and flip CSGO cases is gonna pay off.

    • +10

I'm hoping so too. Also opens up the possibility of using discounted gift cards to purchase steam wallet cards.

      • +1

Oh shit this is gonna be great

    • +9

Yes you absolutely can, going to be selling off some CS knives for when the Index 2 comes around

    • yah !

    • Yes. I bought mine from the Canadian store using my steam wallet funds.

    • How does someone do this?

I do have some crates and keys but haven't paid much attention to it in years.

      • +4
        1. Sell crates and keys.
        2. Get Steam wallet funds
        3. Buy Steam Deck with wallet funds (its purchasable just like a game)

        Pretty simple.

  • +6

Damn, 650 is pretty swift. I get by fine with the 64gb and a 512gb SD, but more space is always welcome.

Forget what I paid a year or so back. Think it was around 700ish, inadvertently ended up getting a second one sent for free too and gave it to a mate for 500. Would absolutely buy a new one for 650 locally if mine died. Thing is a champ.

Finally getting to play Dark Forces 2 at the moment. I have the first on PS1 (and the remaster now on Xbox), Jedi Knight 2 on Switch and Xbox, basically everything in the series other than DF2 that never left PC. Been a ripper playing in bed on the Deck.

    • second one sent for free too

      whatttt

      • +8

Long story short, the power plug sparked a bit, it could have been any number of things, my house's wiring, the power point I used in particular, pulling at a dodgy angle, what side of bed I got out of that day, but considering it did it a good couple of times I messaged them being like "hey d00dz, I know it's not an Aussie plug, I know you didn't have to give me a US to AU adapter anyway, and I appreciate that you did, but is there any chance you had another one laying around, this one seems a bit shonky" and they go yeah sure no wuckas, week or so later I got a whole other Deck in the mail.

This happened with an arcade machine too. I had The Simpsons 1UP and the screws were missing for the stool, I asked if they could send out some new ones (I wasn't gonna run to Bunnings and buy some nuts and bolts if not needed), Kogan support sent me to Arcade1UP who (rightfully) told me to tell Kogan to handle it since they made the sale, lo and behold, come home from work one day and there's a full fat whole ass 'nother Simpsons Arcade sitting on my front porch which thankfully didn't get nicked by anyone since no one was there to sign for it. Sold that one on Facebook to a dude, went 'round to his place, massive Simpsons nut man, had an actual original 90s Simpsons Arcade machine, and just so much merch, honestly wish I asked to take some pictures, very cool shit.

          Dylan: long story short

Also Dylan: proceeds to tell some barely related at best story every time he says that

Edit: Should say the only reason I bothered asking about the adapter is it was a big ol' fast charging USB C and at the time I didn't have any others around, so if I was to charge the deck off like an old phone charger it'd take forever.

        • -3

Who'd you buy it from? But also, minor dog move with the $500 price tag for your mate. Should have charged him what you paid, $700/2 = $350

          • +5

@nigel deborah: An act of kind of fine, and I get many people would do what you said I have no issues with that. But it is only an act of kind, not a right, because his mate had nothing to do with the event so did not have a right to half of winnings for something he didn't contribute to.

I'd rather never sell to someone I know.. you take the risk of being bagged if something goes wrong, having to assist with warranty, and for the pleasure of all that you get to give a discount. With how big of a jerk people can become over things when they break the smart thing to do honestly is shut up about your win and sell it on marketplace

          • +3

@nigel deborah: To be fair, I was gonna sell it for 700 odd on Gummie or Marketplace, they offered me 500 and I was fine to take it.

Minor dog move from one perspective, from mine I happily took a 200 buck loss for a friend.

            • +2

@TheDukeOfNukem: If I was in your position I also would be considering what I’d get reselling the device and going from there with the mate. I think it’s perfectly reasonable, and they still got a good deal in the end of the day.

Not a dog move at all. You probably forfeited a few hundred extra you could have pocketed if you’d sold it.

        • so the power adapter failed but instead of sending another adapter they sent a new steam deck?
how is that possible or why would they do this?

also which store did you get it from?

    • +1

Its pretty easy to upgrade the HDD in the steamdeck, I put in a 2TB in mine, took an hour going very carefully.

  • +40

$899 for OLED is sharp, even if it's OzRRP it's still cheaper than grey importers so worthy of the post.

    • +1

$899 is the new RRP for Australia when steam deck comes here so it will go lower after that now that its officially in Australia

  • how is the steam deck compared to asus rog ally and lenovo legion ?

    • +7

I have an Ally, but also had a Steam Deck at one point.

Spec wise the Ally (and Legion Go) slap the Steam Deck out of the water. 1080p also makes a noticeable difference. That being said, the Deck has much better battery life.

Windows absolutely erodes most of the benefits of the Ally. I’ve been tempted to head back to a Steam Deck a few times now just because I’m so fed up of Windows on the Ally:

      • Sleep/Hibernation not working properly.
      • Game input not working after coming out of Sleep/hibernation.
      • Windows updates!!

Seriously, I can’t wait until Valve support SteamOS on the Ally. I’d make the switch in a heartbeat.

If you want to play (or attempt to play) AAA from the last 2 years, then the Ally/Go are the picks. If you’ll mostly be playing indies or older AAA games, then the Steam Deck is a better bet IMO.

      • +2

That's so strange, I have SteamOS/Win 11 dual boot on my Steam Deck and have zero issues with sleep (games will resume with no issues) or controller input after sleep. Windows Updates only occur once a month so are a complete non-issue (pretty sure SteamOS, at least the client updates weekly or so?).

Then again, Win 11 isn't particularly designed for these handhelds and have been shoehorned in. It'll be interesting what happens with the rumoured Xbox handheld and if it'll be available for OEMs

      • +7

Have you given Bazzite a go? It's an atomic Linux distro that offers the same SteamOS experience and it includes specific software tweaks for the ROG Ally to ensure it runs smoothly.

      • Game input not working after coming out of Sleep/hibernation.

I've had a couple of times when I put the Deck to sleep, that games will still play fine but every time I press a button, like ABXY, it will flash and say R or T or Q or whatever the (profanity) keyboard button it would have been mapped to. EVERY button press, so it will basically flash on the screen with awkward UI prompts and whatnot even though it's playable fine. GTA4 and Just Cause 3 are the only ones that come to mind (it hasn't happened a million times) to the point at first I thought it was just another Rockstar Launcher update problem.

Like if you go in the pause menu and press A it will show the arrow keys for a second and then snap back to controller buttons, but every button press it will do this.

Point being, there's little flaws on the Steam Deck with resuming too, though few and far between comparatively.

      • Apparently, Valve is working on an official Steamos port for the ROG Ally. Im really keen to install it when it releases

    • +14

On paper steam deck looks less attractive. But in reality steamOS leads to a more seamless and optimized experience. I’d take steam deck any day.

    • Once you see the Legion Go screen, you won’t want the steam deck or ally. Legion Go is awesome and easily most versatile.

      • +1

yeah and most expensive too… $1197 for the 512 GB

  • +3

    Wow! Impressed by the pricing.
And impressed by the fact its actually releasing here.

  • +2

    good price. mobileciti btfo

  • Good pricing!!

  • +5

    Blessed be Gaben.

  • -2

Hoping one day it will be sold locally like at EB

    • +1

If it's at the same price, then yes! With thrown in Level Bonuses and Trade deals to boot. Someone pinch me and tell me I'm dreaming.

  • +2

o man this is so damn temping!!!

I really am tempted to get rid of my oled switch now….

  • Such a great news!! Finally.

  • +9

So good to assume that when there is a SD2 launch…aus won't be that behind this time around.

  • -4

Finally, but a bit late as switch 2 will be announced very soon.

    • +17

      Apples and oranges.

      • +4

        Steam and Valves Switches

    • -2

      Source?

      • +2

A lot of people originally thought they would announce it before the end of 2024.

But Nintendo specifically stated the Switch 2 would be announced by the end of the FISCAL year which is March 31, 2025 for Japan.

        • Oooh exciting. I haven't been following the news on that. So good to know. Thanks.

    • +9

Switch 2 is actually just the alarm clock they just announced

    • will the switch 2 be more powerful than the steam deck?

also you will be paying nintendo tax (high price) for the games for a long time
since I don't see nintendo selling the games at discount after a while unlike the steam deck

  • Hmm i bought my OLED 512gb off marketplace for $920 a couple months ago. They bought it from az.mobiles in June 2024 and emailed me the receipt. For warranty purposes, should I consider selling it now and then buying from Valve?

    • +2

Depends on how quickly you sell it. Can't imagine anyone wanting to buy it for +$830 considering the $899 price, less with refurbished models if it comes out and even less with discounted steam gift cards.

  • +10

I bought mine in Japan. It is an amazing product. It changes the way I think about gaming. I will probably never buy another desktop PC again.

    • +1

I do wonder about this - like, you'll never be able to power a 4k res game with this thing - doesn't that bother you?

I understand the smaller screen on the go, and the weaker games will get by if you dock… But where would the amazing graphics be?

      • +8

I've found over the years I've changed as a gamer. The kinds of games that are graphical first experiences don't interest me like they once did. I have a huge backlog of games and the ones that I'm most interested in now can be played quite easily on it. Having said that the SD is no slouch, I got through the witcher 3 on it and it looked great and ran smoothly. I also briefly played death stranding on it which also ran pretty well. It's about as powerful as my 8 year old desktop (at lower resolution)

        • +3

You mean to tell me flashy graphics and the latest DLSS RTX AI soup-du-jour "feature" pushing games to hundreds of gigabytes doesn't AUTOMATICALLY mean it's a good game?!?!

And that there's a huuuuuuge backlog of award winning, bargain price games from the good old days of when products were actually finished before release?!!???!!? Why have they been keeping this a secret?

          /S

          • +1

@Ezekiel2320: It's not that they need to look amazing to be good, but I don't want to be locked out of the potentially awesome visual experiences that are available.

I guess what I mean is that people are using Steamdecks as a secondary gaming computer, but I'm looking for something to be my primary - I'm well acquainted with old games, and don't want another thing that can play them without bringing anything better to the table.

So whilst I understand that, at the size it's at, the Steamdeck pushes enough polygons to be a pretty reasonable experience. But I want it to do more!

Anyway, waiting patiently for a potential update.

            • @Droz: I get it, but honestly I can't think of a single game which I'm barred from playing that I want to play (for graphical reasons). Maybe the game won't look its prettiest it can be, but nearly every game can be run at least 30fps.

The problems are more about games that can't run due to technical reasons (usually anti cheat programs) or needing a mouse+kb.

Still, I gladly give up graphical fidelity for being able to play sitting on a couch, in bed or playing while snug next to someone.

              • @Asti: you can still game with the mouse + kb if you get a dock or use bluetooth

anticheat is an issue with linux
so you can do windows dual booting

there aren't too many games that has anti cheat that is worth playing anyway (unless you like fortnite etc)

                • @pinkybrain: Absolutely, but you start to lose the main selling points of the SD as you progress toward these routes.

                  • @Asti:

Absolutely, but you start to lose the main selling points of the SD as you progress toward these routes.

which games you trying to play with the mouse and keyboard or anticheat on SD?

most of the mouse and keyboards games on the SD are not going be that great to play without actual real mouse and keyboard anyway.

the trackpad is as good as you can get on a portable gaming pc if you want to play mouse + keyboard games while lying in bed/couch etc..
without having to use a real mouse + keyboard
