    ooh nice colour scheme

      • +8

        white+grey buttons looks good

      • +4

Probably because colour preferences are subjective?

      • +4

        White is all colours actually

        • +4

Technically correct—the best kind of correct!

      • Transparent white would have looked way cooler.

    • +1

are there transparent mods? i would love a purple translucent retro gameboy vibe omg

  • +22

I personally like the original colour scheme better, but it's nice that Valve are selling them officially here soon

  • +5

Right when I burn through my money on other stuff…bugger

  • +10

Somehow the white makes it look a lot less frumpy and awkward. Still too big for my liking but a definite aesthetic improvement.

    • +3

This is absolutely not as portable as something like a Switch or even the ROG Ally, but I suppose it’s backpackable enough and most Steam Deck users have large hands anyways.

      • +6

Switch doesn't fit in your pocket though, so has to go in backpack also, isn't it just as portable as switch if they both have to go in backpack regardless?

        • +3

For me, it isn't. I ended up using a switch lite a lot more than the switch, because of the difference between noticing it in a bag and not. By extension, a regular switch is a lot less noticeable floating around a bag than a Steam Deck, meaning I would be more likely to have it with me at all times, and use it more.

Pocketable has never been a consideration for me, my Miyoo Mini + even goes in the backpack, not the pocket, for me it is, how noticeable is it in a bag, and how much does having it in there impede me from putting other things in the bag. The more compact, means it will be in there more, and due to that used more.

      • +2

Hows the warranty/repair vs ROG Ally though?

        • +1

Wouldn't they be identical given Australia's laws and the fact they're in the same category?

          • +1

@DingoBilly: With Asus track record from the original ROG Ally, I wouldn't be entirely sure.
And you shouldn't have to invoke ACCC and chase the retailer for a warranty issue with a manufacturer, but we are blessed to have such safeguards in place to protect us all the same.
Perhaps ASUS have upped their warranty game considerably after being exposed? No idea and personally not really willing to find out.

            • @AmperSand: Asus is seriously sh*t for its quality assurance and control. I had the Sep 23 series model which required warranty exchange through JB after 2 months due to fans suddenly becoming lawn mower sounds even during boot and shutdown. My 2nd Ally Oct 23 series model is now exhibiting right speaker intermittent failure where sound is normal then suddenly becomes very quiet or stops altogether… I’ve tried realtek drivers, regression, reset etc. This is in addition to unusable SD slot on all Allys if you regularly use turbo mode or more…

I also have the Lenovo Legion Go and can’t recommend that enough. Yes the gpu drivers from Lenovo are outdated comparatively but ironically without AFMF the Legion Go still outperforms Ally easily in raw un-interpolated performance even matching new Ally X within several frames per second

        • +1

There was some yanks with SD card issues on the OG Ally but there are no problems with the Ally X. And we’re protected by 2yrs from Aus laws.

    • it would look better along with an eshay bag

  • +2

Any details of which panel is being used for this model? The limited edition sold in other countries had a huge problem with dead pixels

    • Yer this is big, if they use the same panel as the 1TB with issues then it won’t be worth buying this white one

      Anyone know?

  • Oh damn. I want a white one bad, but not going to lose money on selling my current one to get it.
I toyed with the idea of a white skin but ehhh

    • +3

      Buy an ExtremeRate white shell.

"However, Valve has clarified that the Steam Deck 2 will likely not be hitting shelves anytime soon until a "generational leap in compute" takes place"

      https://www.tomshardware.com/video-games/handheld-gaming/val…

      • What's that "generational leap"?

        • +10

Not something that has happened yet. So no idea.

        • +7

When they can keep a similair price, have battery life thats as good or better + get massive leap in performance. Not something that Valve themselve is working on, so the have no control or idea when this will happen. They're just waiting.

        • When AMD's Halo Strix APU's become 15w - 25w of power

        • The 2024 Ryzen 9 HX370 with the 890M APU is ~10-20% faster than the Z1 Extreme in the Ally X / Legion Go for the same power levels, and also has the Zen 5 cache improvements for power consumption/speed. Die size is different, so there may be some rearranging needed to make it fit.

It also has the embed NPU features which probably won't be used in games, but Arch can add XDNA to the kernel for support.

FSR3.1 is more dubious, since Vulkan isn't always an option/ choice for steam deck games, but it can run frame-doubling. Probably. If the game engine supports it.

Not very significant over the Z1E, but still faster than the 2019-22 'Van Gogh' APU in the Steam Deck, it will use less power for the same games.

Maybe they want to wait it out, or make the whole unit lighter. IDK.

          • @toliman: Pretty sure 10-20% perf increase isn't enough for them. They need at least 50% increase

            • @DrScavenger: Leaked info suggests AMD looking at adding 3D v-cache to APUs like Halo Strix… given how that seems to boosts things pretty amazingly, wouldn't be surprised if they go that route

              • @kudoz: That would be so so good. Now if only fsr gets as good as dlss

    • +1

Next year?! i would be very surprised if it is even available for order in 2026.

      • +1

Left4Dead3 sits patiently in the corner.

    • +7

      I'll wait for Steam 3.

      • +18

Best I can do is Steam Deck 2 Episode 2.

        • +4

          Gabe, is that you?!

  • +5

    Very nice cw

  • +10

Seems crazy to spend over $1k on what is nearly 3 year old gaming hardware (aside from the screen), unless there is some indication the Steam Deck 2 will be a different pricepoint?

      • +11

Doesn't play AAA games released this year

Fixed that for ya. Plays literally hundreds, if not thousands of games released this year because not everyone wants to play the latest UE15 4K HDR release.

          • +9

            @whuts: Screen is 800p. not 720p just a fyi

Also this is a handheld device with a 7.4inch screen, you dont need 4k and shouldnt want it. Would do nothing but destroy battery life. 800p on the oled screen looks crazy nice already and at this size, you wouldnt want to go past 1080p which I think will be the sweatspot for good visuals + good battery life.

Switch like graphics? Look if you want to talk about its negatives, then go for it, but you become not worth listening to when you make silly statements like that. You sound a kid from the old Xbox v Ps console wars lol

            • -1

@ScruffTheJanitor: People that defend Steam Deck thinking it’s the best handheld and you don’t need more than 800p likely are new PC gamers, don’t have the money or just don’t have other comparison points in their hands.

I have the OG 1st batch series of Steam Deck LCD 512GB model imported from CA, I upgraded to an Asus Rog Ally (incl a warranty exchange cause Asus QC is sh*t), I purchased a Legion Go, then upgraded my PC to 13900/4090 & got a steam deck OLED this year. I also have all current gen consoles & multiple OLED/LCD displays…

If all you have is a steam deck as your handheld then you just don’t know any better. 1080p on Ally running Z1E trumps 800p OLED any day in any game. 1200/1600p on the legion go feels literally like a leap in visual fidelity at handheld screen and viewing distance unmatched by my 800p OLED deck… I have C1 OLED LG TV dedicated for console gaming, a LG OLED monitor for PC 4090 gaming & the OLED on steam deck whilst nice to have especially at night is not transformative because I have seen better displays with legion go. The biggest impact on visual perception is the sheer difference between 800p vs. 1200p+ resolution in any game (and yes you can get same out better performance at 1200p+ on the Z1E than steam deck APU @ 800p…

I’m not trying to detract the valid perspective that everyone can enjoy whatever they like & i certainly love the steam deck for kick starting PC mainstream gaming in handheld format. But I have zero recent AAA games installed on my deck for a reason because I’ve tried an did side by side comparisons multiple times. My steam library currently ~860+ paid games including AAA/AA titles.

            • @ScruffTheJanitor: You literally have to play everything with the settings to off or low. What’s the point of an OLED screen when everything looks like a potato.

              Yes, the screen is 800p.

              • @whuts: …..for some of the newest releases. Plenty of newish games you can pay at med-high and the offer you get, you can push them past 60fps at high.

You know if the game is so hard to run that you have to put it on the min settings, then the game is still going to look quite good on the mid settings or else you would be able to run it easily.

And once again, it's a small screen. Low detail doesn't matter as much when you can't see it. Plenty of games on low still look stunning on a small screen like that. Seems you are too focused on what the setting is called rather than actually experiencing what it's like actually playing it.

          • +11

@whuts: How the hell is that a straw man? I told you it can't play the latest AAA games from this year, then you go and name nothing but the latest AAA games. Really nicely done.

            • -3

@Tacooo: You didn’t say AAA games! This is the first time you’ve said those words! You said not everyone wants to run “4K with HDR”. I pointed out it can’t even run current games at 720p with everything set to off, for $1000. And listed a bunch of current games. Good luck playing anything recent for the next 3 yrs.

You might as well buy a Switch, you’re going to be stuck playing the same games and you’ll pay half the price.

Like I said, go for it, if you only want to play old games then cool. But I personally think $1k is a damn rip off.

              • @whuts: Maybe actually go look up a comparison of a game like Witcher 3 running on steam deck v switch and come back and let us know if they're the same.

Switch games are far more expensive and old games released on it often launch for full price. Steam is far cheaper with more deals and more ways to get games (humble bundles, key shops etc) so the difference on price will be made up quite quickly.

Also do you really think the games on each are the same? Switch has Cyberpunk? Bulders Gate. Red Dead 2. RE4 remake. Older games like the Fallout series? Not comparable in any way

                • @ScruffTheJanitor: AWESOME! $1000 to play the same game you’ve all played 5+ years ago! Amazing! I too love to just watch the same movie again and again!

I said current games, and future games. But yeah, I’d you’ve already played them, why spend $1000 to play them again? If you want to play low spec, low detail games that are out now, you might as well get an oled switch.

Like I said, go for it, enjoy playing your Witcher 3 for $1000. I’ll be over here playing Black Ops 6 and Mechwarrior 5. Have a good day.

                  • -1

@whuts: I didnt realize Bulders Gate 3 came out 5 years ago. Time flies I guess. Who said theyre the same games I've played before? Have you played every game thats ever released?

You can play most current and future games, theres a small selection of the most graphically demanding AAA games that you can't play. Eg you can play Metaphor which just came out. Also do you there are more games than just the AAA latest releases? Maybe try them sometime.

Black Ops 6? Maybe dont admit youre playing that if you want anyone to listen to your opinion haha.
But enjoy playing Call of Duty 342 just because its 'new' even though its the same game that theyve been releasing for over a decade. Ill be over here playing much better games that I've never played before regardless of when they came out.

Still cant get over the Black Ops 6 and Mechwarrior 5 comment. Oh no I cant play a game Ive never heard of and another game I played 15 years ago. Sad.

                    • -1

@ScruffTheJanitor: “Games I don’t like so comment wrong” soft brain genius.

                      • -1

@whuts: I actually gave you 4 paragrahs of why you're wrong, but I guess you couldn't think of a reply to anything else so gotta take the easy way out.

Its not even games I dont like, Call of Duty is just THE icon for casual game and a series that has re-released the same thing for decades. It was just too funny that you were banging on about Steam Deck not being able to play new games and then you're no.1 example is a series that hasn't done anything new for decades. Its like if you said the Steam Deck cant play Fifa 24. Ah ok?

But I guess you can't think of actually arguments unless their in bad faith. Not being able to play some new games of course can only mean youre playing 5+ year old games that youve already played, right? Cant play other new games that it can run? Or games released within the last couple years? Or older games youve never played before? Perhaps on platforms youve never owned through emulation.

You are wrong that the Steam Deck can't cant play anything new or coming out the future. You are right that it can't play some of those games.

You are wrong if you think theres a large group of people that care that their Steam Deck cant play Cod 6 or Mechwarrior 5. Maybe if you said Alan Wake 2 you wouldve got some support.

                        • @ScruffTheJanitor: I didn’t bother with a detailed reply because you’re speaking idiotic gibberish, and it was perfectly summed up in my reply. I see you’ve type more paragraphs of gibberish.

“Don’t argue with an idiot, they’ll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

              • @whuts: It was literally the very first thing I said.

        • +3

100%, heaps of gamers, I'd guess the majority, don't play the latest releases

        • Not to mention its a great emulation machine. I can literally play any SNES, NES, Switch games on this thing. I also have a giant backlog so its not like Im gonna be playing anything AAA this year on it. I have my PC for any intensive games.

    • +11

The Steam Deck is more than the sum of its physical parts (hardware) and is well worth it at any of its price points.

The Nintendo Switch was terrible on paper the day of its release, and yet it’s on track to be Nintendo’s best-selling device, ever.

Like the Switch, the Steam Deck offers a more optimized software experience than handhelds like the ROG Ally.

Also, Valve has indicated there won’t be a ‘Steam Deck 2’ until there is a significant jump in technology.

      • -1

I'm not saying its a bad device by any means, just that it is overpriced (to me) for what you get right now compared to when it launched nearly 3 years ago.

It also makes no sense to compare PC gaming hardware (which is what a steam deck amounts to) where the game devs have constantly changing hardware they are optimizing for, to a console like a Switch where the majority of software is optimised for that specific hardware.

        • +3

Except it does make sense. Steam deck is set hardware, just like the switch. This means developers can optimize for that hardware, just like the switch. So no, the devs don’t have to ‘constantly optimize for changing hardware’ in the context of comparing the steam deck to the switch.

Valve aren’t just selling a hardware experience. They are selling the whole experience. And they just made it clear to every dev that it’s worthwhile optimizing for their hardware as it’s not changing anytime soon.

Sure you can go buy something with better on paper specs like the ROG Ally, but there is a smaller chance that devs have optimized for that. I guess you get the true PC experience with troubleshooting how to actually run every second game that way too.

          • -1

@WhyThingsCostMoney: All that makes perfect sense, can you please give me some examples of games that have been released in the last year that were optimised specifically for the Steamdeck?

            • -1

              @Arsenal: Optimized Games from 2023
              Baldur's Gate 3
              Resident Evil 4 (Remake)
              Diablo IV
              Hogwarts Legacy

              Optimized Games from 2024
              Hades II
              Space Marine 2
              Metaphor: ReFantazio

Is it really that hard to check for yourself?

              • @WhyThingsCostMoney: It would seem that way, as I can't even find where you got that list. Bearing in mind I am aware that Steam maintains a "Steam Deck Verified" list of games, but being verified as running okay after release by Steam does not mean the same thing as being optimized by the developer for the Steamdeck.

    • +5

Is it? Tech is expensive and it doesn't drop like it used to and the aussie $ is still quite weak. You can also get the base OLED model for $899 which is much better value and use the money saved to get a 2TB NVME drive to install.

A ps5 is $800 and thats for 4 year old hardware.
An OLED switch goes for $540 new with internals the same as the one that released 7 years ago with a chip that released in 2015.
A base iPhone 14 that rleased 2 months before the OG steamdeck still goes for $1050 new.

      • +1

Personally I also wouldn't buy any of the things you listed now either, so yeah. With tech i'm either buying it within a year of launch or i'm not buying it.

    • Meh, just sell some CSGO skins and buy.

I wonder if the white case will get the yellowing issue, that white mouse products get.

  • I hope they make another translucent LE

    • huh?

      • +2

Soz meant to have said, I wonder if they will do Refurbs in Au

  • +4

Hmmm looks better to me, but you would be paying a premium to just change from black.

I wonder if the white will show stains / marks more easily, or perhaps go yellowish a bit….

    • My thoughts exactly too. Also, having the black frame makes the screen look brighter and easier to see, especially in brighter environments.

      • +4

        Yup.

The main positive for me, is it will be easier to find and harder to accidentally sit on… I shall be using it mostly in bed you see… I have a medium term illness which leaves me in bed a lot and all my bed linen is black or dark.

        • +4

Sorry to hear that bud, wishing and hoping the best for your recovery.

Fair call regarding being able to see it, not gonna lie, i have put my phones on my black doona covers and forgetting them, only to send them flying into walls as i aggressively throw over my sheets, i am really lucky i haven't cracked a screen or done any damage to them.

  • +6

Looks great, but will probably get dirty pretty quickly, especially if you have super oily skin like me

    • +1

You need one of these then. +1 DEX

      • If I can't touch my deck without resorting to gloves, I don't want to touch my deck. I'll get a black one when it's out, play it safe…

        • +1

Totally hear ya, neither will I. I get sweaty palms and would hate to discolour the white shell.

        • -2

You get a black dick when it's out? You should see a doctor I think..

  • -7

    "I don't need it. I don't need it. I don't need it. I don't need it."

    I bought 4.

No snacking whilst playing with this one lol

  • +1

Did you know on eBay people are still flogging the 512GB variant for $1,300?

    Scalpers are so funny….

    • I'm guessing it's just a bunch of people hoping that people want it now, or retailers trying to get as much profit as they can from their grey stock before they're forced to drop their prices.
