Whilst were all here being fanboys, anyone think the new 557 drop is worth the update?
apparently 50% increase in speeds etc.

Unless it is significantly cheaper than the RP5. Then no.

    • not sure but ergonomics look nice! seems unlikely to be a better proposition than the rp5 tho. looking forward to finding out what russ thinks

    • Hard to say because they’re using the Dimensity chip that doesn’t have the GPU drivers that the snapdragon chips have, so even though it’s faster you might struggle with compatibility. At least that’s my understanding.

I assume that we're going to get some rather attractive pricing on this sort of product in the next few weeks as American demand for them plummets thanks to the rapidly fluctuating de minimis fees.

    Retroarch is free!

      And? This runs Retroarch.

    • +3

And the portable hardware to use Retroarch on costs what amount?

      • +9

They're going to be the jUsT RuN ReTrOARCH oN YouR PHonE type.

Just get a Odin 2 Pro second hand and be done with. Don't waste your money on entry level or mid-tier handhelds. Even playing PS2 on this device will require some tweaking, not all games will play at full speed. Also, if you have big hands, ergonomics sucks on these devices. I sold my RP5 for a Odin 2 Pro, which I picked up for 350 on marketplace. Never looked back, plays everything, comfortable and amazing battery life. You rather save more and get something that's future-proof and worth the money you spend.

I have a Steam Deck and RP4 Pro but sometimes prefer taking the smaller Anbernics on trips just because of the tiny size. The RG35XXSP is my favorite for this.

Same here. Have a Steam Deck and love it for on the couch, etc but if I need compact, I've got an RG35XX-H that comes along, with all my saves syncing to the cloud so it all transfers across.

        • That's awesome. Do you use Syncthing for that ? I tried it a few months ago and found that it was constantly deleting/overwriting my new saves with the old ones and I could never figure out why

          • @Slurped: Yep, syncthing for all of it. I only sync game saves however - save states often don't work across emulators so I don't bother.

    • idk. i agree and disagree with this. $350 is an extremely lucky price for you to have scored the odin 2 pro, normally i see em for at least $450 second hand. also the mid-level anbernics are way smaller and can do quite a lot for what they are. you definitely get your money's worth for the extra $$ for an odin or retroid but i do think there is a type of user who would get loads of value from spending $230 on an rg406h or v or cube.

  • For the cheaper models, can they connect wirelessly? Thought of getting 2 to play with my son.
