6540

Technically now an OzRRP post, but Valve officially announced the Australian release of the Steam Deck, shipping next month. Cheaper than current sellers so potentially some deals there if they drop their prices to sell their stock.

Mod Update: Steam Deck will be available for sale (and will begin shipping) in Australia on November 19th, at 10am AEDT.

The page has been updated with 19th November…

  • Steam OS has printing now (CUPS), so you can effectively use the Steam Deck as your main desktop. I was part of the "squeaky wheel" in the forums to get CUPS added. It's great except if you have a Canon printer lol.

    Steam controller 2 when?

  • +2

So, do you think this will "sell out" quickly?

Would it be better to wait until black Friday/ cyber Monday?

(Ooops didn't see the above similar question)

    • +2

waiting to know as well. i already wait year for this. 1 more week wouldnt kill me.

  • Alright one night left, get ready to crash the steam website…!

  • I really hope JB hifi sell steam deck as well!

  • Here we GO!!!

  • I really don’t get the appeal of this thing. All the games it plays you could already play on any other pc or laptop. Poor battery life and very bulky to really take anywhere travelling. 2 year old mobile processor so the performance won’t be good enough for AAA games, most of the pc games on steam need a mouse and keyboard anyway so the controls would be kinda awkward.

    • I travelled with a friend for brought his steamdeck and it was good for portability. The processor was fine for AAA games but for this price it's completely fine, don't get sucked into thinking you need the latest CPU to run newer games.

Only games that need a mouse and keyboard are FPS games. But even then people still play FPS games on console.

    Bang, got one!
    (512GB OLED)

  • +1

    Ordered a 512gb OLED :)

Now to look for dock and accessories.

    • Likewise, screen protector first to get methinks! Woo!

      • Yep, i'll be looking for a screen protector and a dock.

      • Does the 1TB model with anti-glare (AG) need an AG screen protector? I heard the non AG screen protector may 'undo' this feature?

  • Limited edition is showing out of stock now. Was about 2 minutes.

    • Woah already? That was way quicker than I expected

    • Ouch, that's quick! I'd keep checking every couple of minutes in case anyone has in their cart and has issues. Maybe more stock later? How limited is limited…. :/

      • Wondering that myself… Surely they keep some in reserve for warranty claims?

    • Showing available again as of 10:24

  • +2

    1tb white secured. Thanks

Edit: Now telling my wife that I sorted out the gift for our 4 years old.

  • +1

Wow! I got one at 10:01 (had to update my address)

  • +1

Anyone place the order, Steam says it's pending, but no email confirmation and wallet balance still full?

    • +1

Paid with card and received email confirmation.

    • +1

For me Steam showed the standard "Thanks for your order" or whatever the wording is, and then email was about 1 min later.

    • +1

What do you see when you head to your Recent Purchases (https://help.steampowered.com/en/wizard/HelpWithPurchase)?

      • +2

Yeah, just checked and I see it there. by the looks of it it’s because steam credit was used. Something about Valve checking that they aren’t fraudulent.

        • +1

That might've been it. At least it's recorded and you have transaction ID.

  • I wonder if white will increase it’s resell ability when it comes time to upgrade…..?

  • +1

Lol trying to buy the Limited edition and ANZ blocks my card :D Their Falcon system always blocks legit transaction and allows scam money transfer

    • That sucks! Did you get it in the end?

      • No, I did not :( Decided to get the black one (It changed to 6-10 days delivery when my card was unlocked). I hate ANZ

    • Same problem :( even blocked using the card through PayPal. Had to use another card to not delay too long!

  • +2

I missed the white one but ordered the 1TB black anyway. :D

    • +1

Just in time you posted this and white becomes available again lol.

  • +2

1TB black secured! Keen to finally try one of these after holding out for local release.

  • The white one went so fast! Scalpers at play or a crazy limited amount of stock.

    • Usually both in these instances

    • It is a worldwide release… I secured one, I’m no scalper… I actually do not care white or black, but I think it will be better when it comes to selling it.

    • Probably a bit of both.

I'm not a huge fan of white devices but it have to say it does look quite good. It's a pity it comes with the etched screen though, I'm sure there are people that would prefer glossy screens for clarity and the white case.

    • Makes sense! Though the white one is available again!! Just got it (and sent my refund request for the black one)…

  • +1

Hell yeah brother secured the white deck.
Already had a ye old lcd 64gb one which is now 1tb
But can’t wait to see the oled goodness

  • oled white back in stock? lmao

    • Haha, you're right. I wonder if it was intentional to allow a second round of people to buy.

  • White back in stock

    • Definitely carts timing out I reckon
Probably not many instances of that left

  • Says 6-10 business days for delivery now.

  • +1

The shipping times changed to 6-10 days now…

    • Probably all the normal decks selling pushing the timeline out
Quite a lot sold it seems I guess

  • I had the original LCD one for a year and sold it a few months ago knowing I'll eventually want to get the deck 2 or oled. Now that this is here and seems like they won't release a successor for a while (or until arm linux is ready), I went for the white one. Just felt like a point of difference than to get something that looks exactly the same again. Hopefully won't get dirty too easily!

  • oh /sigh - anyway at least potentially my order arriving this week. Any OB recomendations for accessories with the prime sales starting today?

  • +2

Keen on their official dock but doesn't look like it's up for sale here?

    • Same here, but as you said the product page just doesn't have any purchase options. Hopefully they sort this soon.

    • I swear they tweeted shortly after announcement that they didn’t currently have plans to release it here but can’t seem to find it.

  • Says I can order a white OLED still

  • As an FYI the delivery/shipping times are wildly inaccurate. The one I got from Canada said 5 days and it was delivered in 2. YMMV though

  • I keep getting a server error

    • Try the phone app, had no issues

  • Tried to buy the White with steam credit, stuck pending currently. Better not sell out before it confirms the order or I'm going to be big mad.

    • I placed my order at 10:02 and had the same issue. Cleared at 10:23

    • I had funds in steam wallet - ordered at 10:00, cleared at 10:19. I hope I made the first batch ETA of 3-5 days!!

    • Its just their fraud prevention checks and the transaction should go through shortly but your allocation should be safe

      • In true ozbargain fashion, Valve was pobably suspect with my multiple steam wallet vouchers purchased at EB games with the 10% discounted ultimate giftcards :D At least I can say to my wife that I didn't pay full price for the SD!

        • No its standard for nearly all the Deck purchases. Not sure what they check but it can take up to 24 hours.

          • @Piranha2004: From what I found it does take a fair bit longer if it's at least partially paid for with Steam wallet

            • @Winny182: Sounds about right. Mine took about 12 hours since I funded it entirely from my Steam Wallet

  • +1

Repurchased the white one around 10:20am and they refunded the 512gb black which I ordered around 10.03am haha

  • +2

I bought the 512gb on the dot at 10am when it had 3-5 day shipping, now it's 6-10 😭. I hope considering I got it early it'll ship on the original timeframe? I literally go OS next Thursday 😅. I'm in a metro area so I hope so????

    • +2

I've got my fingers crossed for ya!

      • +2

me too!! I was always hoping that a week and a bit would be plenty of time, so will see! not the end of the world if not haha

  • got me a 512gb one, wasnt going to bother today but hey why not, something to do on the train last few weeks of the year. said 6-10 day shipping for me at 10:20

  • missed out on the white one. so 512gb will go.
go hard or go home… and I went home

    • White still in stock as of now

      Edit: back OOS

  • Wonder how much I could get selling my LCD to upgrade to the OLED…

  • Can you use this as the 'PC' for PCVR? I have the Quest 3S and that's the next step (so I can play Alyx, basically!).

    • Not sure. It runs on Linux so Im assuming whatever VR system you use would have to have Linux drivers.

    • Short answer is No.

These are 10w to 20w portable PC devices. Sure.
VR is a whole different tech to regular PC gaming as it needs to maintain a minimum framerate and latency (to avoid motion / immersion sickness with visual latency - there's like 15-20 tech & hardware requirements you have to do to avoid VIMS or VR sickness, not just drivers/software and apps).

There's a lot of custom hardware in these headsets to make them more fluid/responsive.

The spec and requirements are vastly different. Especially with Mixed Reality / Spatial Mapping. A lot of custom hardware/software is needed to accelerate the geometry handling, as well as transposing the video geometry of the 3-4 cameras, etc. A lot of work was done to get the hardware to work at 6w to 15w power consumption.

The Vision Pro's chipset is custom, the Quest 3 /3s use a custom Snapdragon XR2 chipset with dedicated VR pipeline and bandwidth. The lens and panel are very customised and would be subsidised by Facebook to a degree, hence the lock-in with prices and exclusivity i.e. $30 - $50 games,

The Steam Deck, is running a 2019 design chipset with the AMD Zen 2, similar to the Xbox Series S or Playstation 5 spec, without the same level of custom tweaks that the Xbox/Playstation have. The Z1 extreme, with the Zen 4 and 780M chipset is also not VR ready, nor is it spec'd to run at 90fps at 1080p on a single screen.

The XR2 is custom made for VR.

  • +1

At this stage, white is not 'limited' anymore lol

    • +1

Limited! Until we stop making them.

    • I guess we're used to limited selling out in minutes. But showing sold out again after about 2.5 hours of launch is pretty reasonable. Even if it were available for a week, I still think that's good. It just gives a chance for people to get on what's likely an initial run that won't happen again.

    • It will sell out, sooner rather than later, I heard they stagger them through the day..

  • Limited White is showing out of stock again 12:35pm

  • Has anyone received update on the order dispatched yet?

    • 10am they released it and you want them to go to post office at 1pm?

      • 1pm? 10:05am and right to my door! :P

    • funds need at least 24 hours to clear.

    • Any updates on yours? I'm beginning to wonder if there's something wrong with mine as it's still sitting in Payment processed. Order confirmation email but zero on shipping. They've taken the money as it's left my account (via PayPal) so nothing to do with any 24 hour payment verification.

Not exactly a good first experience buying hardware direct with Valve. I realise this is very much a first world problem and I'm just apparently unable to wait x days, so perhaps more venting than anything. However, I doubt it's the experience Valve are going for.

  • Bought mine at bang on 10AM and still only Processed Payment is checked off. Aggh, come on you basts, ship the damn thing! :P

    • +1

Apparently in the past it only updated further when it was out for delivery so who knows

      • I did wonder actually. All depends on how the logistics company updates Steam I guess. Anyway, I waited a year(!) so I can wait a bit longer.

        Thanks.

  • Wanted to get this before my flight to Japan this weekend. Reckon it might be cutting it too close. Think I’ll have any luck getting one in Japan? Otherwise might have to wait til I’m back after 2 weeks.

    • +1

It's gonna take two weeks to even arrive. Just buy it before you leave and it'll arrive when you come back.

  • Buy now or HODL for Black Friday?

    • +1

Depends on which model. I doubt they will have any sales on for Black Friday unless retailers can get them.

    • +1

For SD, less likely we will have a big discount on black friday as it is sold exclusively by Steam and is "recently" released in Australia. Based on the speed white version sold out, I don't think Steam need to reduce price to push the sales :P
However, it's only 1 week till Black Friday, I think you should wait. Maybe you will end up changing your mind and buy rog ally x or legion go with huge discount instead xD
rog ally is the best choice for me, but the price is way too expensive. Bought SD this morning

  • has anyone received any shipment update?

    • Nah, nothing yet. I reckon probably shipped/notified Friday
For what it’s worth too I bought mine like 10:00:30am lol

    • Mine has updated to “packaged items” but that’s about it.
