Except for the dual cab, they don't look too bad.

    • +3

As someone who drives a similar car I’ve talked to a few people that own the dual cab out of interest , as I had heard good things ,
Yes, beaten with the ugly stick but people seem to love them ,
good on fuel is usually the first thing they sprout, comfortable etc.
Anecdotal i know but interesting nonetheless,

I just wonder how far west they get ,
before it turns back into landcruiser country.

      • +12

I was considering it until I looked at the owners group on Facebook. Endless issues, but filled with a bunch of people who would back owning a weird brand no matter what. A guy would drive 1km off the car lot, have a door fall off and the engine grenade and imply it was well built and just a slight issue you could expect from any brand.

        • +3

If you used Facebook groups to decide on what car to buy, you probably wouldnt buy anything. All people tend to post on these groups are their issues it seems

Does this model come with an ANCAP rating?

      • +8

For this car, yes. Many didi and über driver will go for it and they have a mandatory ancap minimum rating

      • +8

You do have a point, a lot of the "driver assists" that theyre mandating are more of a distraction.

To give the MG a zero for not having collision avoidance is literally an ego trip. The car will still perform better than a 5 star camry from 2016

        • +14

… and at this point I feel like my car's collision avoidance and other driver assist, no, driver interference technologies have almost caused more accidents then they've saved. I particularly love it when someone with a parked car opens a door or something, so I try to swerve around to give them more room and if I get too close to the centre / right hand lane line, despite no one in that lane, it interferes and pushes me back towards the obstruction.. causing me to avoid a potential collision it created - it's always keeping me on my toes like that in urban areas!

Then there's the ones where it alarms and auto-brakes when someone is turning left into a driveway and you are following them even though they've moved onto the shoulder and out of your way enough to pass and you were planning on cruising safely past - but it panics.

Another is when you are on the highway with cruise set and your mind starts wandering because it is doing things like steering for you and slowing down when you approach another car, then after a long time like this, maybe a half hour, it gets confused all of a sudden it gives up on that idea and you have got to snap out of it and make sure you are steering and keeping distance without assistance and virtually no time for a warning. Gets scary how quickly you adapt to having that assistance then it fails and leads to a dangerous situation.

          • +1

@MrFrugalSpend: What happens when someone kicks a football into the street?
Does it chuck a hand break turn mount the pavement and weave through the pedestrians?

            • @beach bum: If i were planning on gently swerving around it, and when doing so tried to cross the centre line because it was clear to avoid hitting the ball (with no one coming the other way), but reacted without indicating first (as you do in that quick reaction scenario), it would instead stop me from doing that, flash red lights on the heads up display, beep loudly and startle and distract me, then jamb the brakes on and if we were too close probably still hit the ball and above all that, the car behind that was not expecting that reaction would likely run into the back of me. It's that good ! :(

I heard about someone that something similar happened to, a garbage bag blew out onto the road, everyone was just expecting to keep driving because it was clearly just a piece of plastic that you could run over, their car auto-braked rapidly and the car behind rammed into them. They then get into an argument with the person behind wanting to know why they stopped so suddenly … the big question then is, when driver assist tech causes an accident, who's liable?

In a more funny version, my brothers car wouldn't let him park in the express carparks at the local supermarket because they had painted big signs on them about 15 minute parking in a large box and the cameras thought it was some obstruction in the car park !!

          • @MrFrugalSpend: But I should say it is also fixable if the manufacturers could allow it to be, because my wife's car also has all the driver assist stuff and it hardly ever actually interferes and rarely if ever false alarms when I drive it - it is way less sensitive (even though I had the dealer show me how to turn down the sensitivity on mine at the first service). Same with the auto-stop at traffic lights, it is way better at picking when it should actually turn off, whereas some other cars are turning off at inconvenient times for 2 seconds all the time.

The driver assist should really be calibrated to be a last resort only for those "oh, sh!t you're gonna crash so I'm going to brake for you cause you've clearly dropped the ball to reduce the impact" moments only. Like seatbelt pre-tensioners. It should not be interfering with day to day driving, but mine does.

            • @MrFrugalSpend: If there’s two different obstacles on the road would it choose to hit the smaller object if there was no avoiding the accident?

      • +5

I bet the downvoters didn't even read the linked article.

      • +2

What if you or your loved ones were the object it hit?

        • +1

Maybe they should be handing their licences in or be buying this Mahindra

        • If your prime consideration is not safety of the occupants, but third party safety…. stay away from the front of semis, and all fixed objects.
Unless of course you want to test some darwin award gene pool theories.

A simple search in the ANCAP website will expose this lie.
        https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/mahindra/scorpio/470…

Adult occupant safety rating is 44%. That is pathetic.

Furthermore, "Top tether anchorages are not fitted to the centre seating position in the second row of seven-seat variants (NZ) or third row seating positions of any variant. Installation of child restraints in these seating positions is not recommended.

This vehicle is not suitable for transporting young children in these seating positions."

        Sad!

        • +11

Your link is to the scorpio, not the car OP linked.

What I care about in safety is, in the event of a crash, there's less chance of serious injury, from crumple zones, airbags, all that stuff.
Reading the link you posted, ANCAP has harshly rated the scorpio because it doesn't have the new features that lots of people turn off:

          ANCAP Safety

Neither an autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, or a lane support system (LSS), are available on any variant of the Mahindra Scorpio.

A seatbelt reminder (SBR) system is fitted as standard to the front seating positions only. Seatbelt reminders are not provided for any second or third row seating positions.

A driver monitoring system (DMS) is not available. A speed limit information function (SLIF) is not available. A child presence detection (CPD) system is not available.

@JakeyJooJoo: He's responding to Op's quote supposedly from the Global NCAP's boss' praise on the Scorpio

          • @JakeyJooJoo: Am responding to the comment where he was talking about the Scorpios ancap rating.

This is for a different model.

          Xuv700 hasn't been rated yet.

          https://www.drive.com.au/reviews/2023-mahindra-xuv700-review…

"That it doesn’t receive an ANCAP score does not mean it’s unsafe. The Mahindra XUV700 AX7L gets active safety measures such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and tyre pressure (and temperature) monitoring."

        • Oh bud…

      Are these made in India?

When I was in India, I saw heaps of Mahindras driving around on rural roads, through the potholes, gaps in paved road, through the dust, swerving around trucks and rickshaws. I got a huge respect for them after that, they just have decent suspension to tolerate that!!

I know Mahindra make very good tractors.

      • how is the 3rd row, compared to other SUVs if you have tested them?
        anything you like in particular?

        • My 13 yr old nephew sat on the 3rd row and he had enough leg space. he did not complain for a 5 hours road trip.

I personally have not sat on the 3rd row, but my partner has and it was okay for a 15-20mins trip, but maybe not for long drives as it can be crammed up.

Also the 3rd row have AC vents and cup holders.

That blurb was NOT very persuasive. In fact, it's counter to the point OP was trying to make.
All those items listed indicates that you buy from a base with expertise and demonstrated results.
Then you say all the junk around your house is Chinese - so why not make your 2nd largest purchase in life (car) from the same junk vendors?
$33k is incredibly cheap - by that I mean 'cut corners' cheap, not 'introductory market pricing' cheap.
resale value would be close to zero

      • +4

advertised price is not resale price. it is now 32,990 to drive the point home

    • Depends on how old car will be when sold along with conditions.

It also depends on what is seller’s buying strategy and tax optimisation strategies

      • +1

tax optimisation strategies like buying as a company car and claiming for depreciation and GST ?
