I'm with Kogan NBN at the moment and they usually can beat prices, but only with selected NBN providers. Too bad Mate NBN isn't one of them

    • +2

      what's kogan been like?

      • +6

My only feedback: I went to sign up with them about a month ago, and they required so much ID verification that I passed. (Drivers licence card number, Medicare card etc)

I have now cleaned up my ID docs after Latitude and Medibank leaks, I'm now a bit more careful about who I hand them out to.

Went with Tangerine instead, as they did not see to have such heavy ID verification requirements. Or any really.

        • +1

Signed up with Kogan a few years ago, nothing asked.

        • When you say you've "cleaned" up your documents, what do you mean?

        • +4

          Medicare card

Why do they need your Medicare card?

          Do they examine your prostate?

          • +5

            @jv: Only upon request

            • +5

@Masakari: Would need to be a very good 'Mate'

          • +1

@jv: They charge extra for that.

          • +1

@jv: They need some form of ID jv.
Medicare card is the least obtrusive (no personal details such as DOB) so be thankful

            • -1

              @HeWhoKnows:

They need some form of ID jv.

How do they know it's yours?

It's easy to generate a Medicare number.

              • @jv: My first two jobs involved selling phone and internet plans for Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and a few MVNOs. They were all required by the government to collect far more ID than they wanted to. The “standard” to meet the 100 points of ID minimum threshold was: Drivers licence, Medicare and a bank card. (All names must match exactly). This was the easiest for most people as they typically had these in their wallets. You could meet 100 points in other ways though, eg passport + bank statement or utility bill. Different forms of ID were worth more points. Passports, drivers licences and birth certificates were each worth more points than any other forms of ID combined.

It always weirded my out when I had to take a birth certificate as ID. There’s no photo like a passport or drivers licence, and if there was it’d be a photo of a baby. So like you said there’s no way to know it’s theirs.

But these were government requirements and Telstra, Optus and Vodafone were just complying.

The government literally forces you to hand over all your most sensitive personally identifiable information to private companies who don’t want it or need it and can’t protect it, and when it inevitable gets leaked on the internet for all to see for ever more, then you just have to deal with it. Because terrorism laws.

        Regarding my NBN connection:

        Positives:
        - Cheapest monthly plan I could find for NBN 50
        - With FTTP, I've experienced a stable and reliable connection.
        - Connection speeds have been pretty consistent.

        Negatives:
        - There's no online portal to self-manage my account; I have to call support.
        - I'm still waiting for my Qantas points to be credited. They mentioned it could take up to 60 days, but it's been longer, and I haven't received any points yet.

  • +1

billing from sign up not activation?? so you cant plan cutover from another provider :/

    • Thought most did that and you plan roll over date ?

      • Dont most bill on activation?

Like you'd tell mate you want to start in 30 days to give the previous provider notice but Mate will bill you for the 1st 30 days still while you're paying off the last 30 days on the old provider

    • +3

you can, billing from activation.. I signed up yesterday to activate on 16/09 and i wasnt changed anything yet.. billing from sign up would be illegal if they offer to activate at later date

    • +2

No other RSPs do such thing.

      However, they do say:

An invoice is generated on your sign-up date for any services you have signed up for, even if these services aren’t active. However, don’t worry if your service isn’t active as a pro-rata credit will be applied to your account from your bill cycle date to when your service is activated with MATE.

If their speeds are decent, probably can be overlooked. But still dodgy AF.

      • Nothing dodgy about it. I signed up last month, there is a debit and credit for the days since I ordered until activation date (meaning zero charge for those dates), so you aren't charged for the days until it's actually connected.
Odd billing design, but still legitimate.

  • +1

@rfc850 Bring back $1 X 3 months mobile plans please

  • +3

Looks decent. Hopefully my Flybuys from Optus come through soon so I can churn away.

    • +8

Are the 6 month prices relevant if you churn before you get there anyway?

      • -2

depends lol, they're probs hoping ppl forget to cancel

        • +21

Is that the reason for your downvote, because customers might forget to cancel?

        • +3

How hard is to set a reminder in your calendar?

        • +1

So like most subscription service deals? Not a reason to neg imo.

    • +2

      Do you have Dementia?

    • +3

This is a 6-month deal which you admit the price is good.

So I don't understand why it deserves a neg

    • +3

The 6 month prices are fantastic, considering the wholesale price of nbn50 is more than what Mate are selling their service for.
Considering that TPG offer their nbn50 plan at $79.99 per month, I think Mate is pretty competitive.

  • Hi OP,

How long will it take for Mate to complete a churn via remote activation (nbn HFC) from sign up today?

I need to transfer out from my curent RSP before 27/08, otherwise I will be charged for the whole month afterwards.

I was planning to sign up with Tangerine but they never respect the transfer date.

    Also, does Mate support IPv6?

    • +4

From my experience, I signed up to Mate on Tuesday 13/08 at about 9:30pm churning from Dodo (I have nbn HFC too), my Dodo internet went down about 5 minutes later; then I started receiving emails and SMS from Mate on my phone telling me churning was in progress. Another few minutes later, I got more notification that the churn was complete. I entered my new details in my modem and I was on Mate within 20 minutes of signing up.

I was expecting the churn to be done during business hours but was pleasantly surprised the whole thing was done and dusted within 20 minutes. Your mileage may vary but that was just my experience last week.

  • +1

Damn i just signed up to exetel yesterday and was charged.

Anyway to jump on this, or no choice to wait for a month?

    • -5

Anyway to jump on this, or no choice to wait for a month?

Are you for real? You don't even glance at the T&Cs?

You need to give Exetel 30 days notice, and they do not offer pro rata refunds.

      • +1

or no choice to wait for a month?

      • +2

Calm down hero, he's simply asking a question if there's any way around the notice period. What a strange thing to get all worked up over.

    • +1

Call them and see if they have a cooling off period. Not uncommon for services like this.

    • wait 2 months I suppose, exetel needs a 30 day notice. Don't forget to give them a notice.

    • Exetel's Critical Information Summary says the minimum term for their NBN is "No Lock-in" instead of "1 month". This means you would only need to honour for the days your service is active.

Plus, Exetel billing for the 30-day period after you churned out falls within Accepting payment without intending to supply and is considered violating the ACL. This is because you were billed for the item "Broadband", not "Cancellation Fee", despite your broadband service has already been terminated.

Hence, one possibility is as follows:
      1. Churn to Mate straight away.
      2. If Exetel continues to bill you, do not pay, email them about the minimum term and their ACL violation. They're likely to waive the bill for you.
      3. If they didn't, file a complaint to TIO of above. They're much more likely to waive the bill.
      4. Worst case scenario, ask Mate for a refund within a month and then churn out to Flip, then churn back….

Do yourself a favour and jump to Pineapple Net if it's available at your location.
Way more value for money and the speed is legit and reliable.

    See for yourself.

    https://pineapple.net.au/#plans

    • +1

that's insane, is that a scam? Not available for me

      • +2

Not a scam, I was with Mates for about 4-5 years, they've been great. $59 pm for 25/10
Great customer service, quick plan cancellation and reconnection when I go overseas.

Pineapple net has been setting up booth at my apartment's lobby but didn't considered changing although the price and speed was attractive.

Few months ago, Mates increased my monthly price to $64 and I decided to give Pineapple net a shot.
The only cost was the purchase of a new modem because my old modem couldn't handle such high speed.
Life has been great, in terms of internet speed and wallet. Only downside is that it makes you miss your home wifi when you're over at your mates' who have to live with NBN.

      • +11

Pineapple operates on the DGtek fibre network and only has coverage in inner Melbourne (and Moorabbin)

        • Yep, it's a tiny network, and most apartment blocks within its footprint have not installed their infrastructure and won't, so it has very limited availability for most, unfortunately.
Paases my front door but I can't get it as the owners corporation won't allow another hard wired provider to overlap the existing NBN fibre network. Appears to be the case for the majority of buildings.

      • Was with pineapple for years (spirit internet before then), it's the best value and can't compare to NBN …

But fibre isn't available for everyone, as it's mainly in Docklands 3008 and CBD or other high rise buildings to service 100s of households (or even 1000s across multiple towers) instead of just 1 house hold.

    • +1

"Sorry, unfortunately Pineapple Net is not available at your address"

    • +2

      dont support HFC connections

    • +10

Pineapple fibre is limited to Melbourne CBD and surrounds only. It's not nbn.

    • Powered by DGtek
DGtek is an infrastructure provider running fibre optics down Melbourne’s streets. We retail their world-class FTTP network, and that’s how our residential speeds are faster and cheaper than all our competitors.

    • +1

Why cant NBN be priced like that?

      • +1

        Monopolisation

      • +8

Because of the multi technology mix crap. Pricing could be like that when more nbn FTTP is available.

        • This right here, folks.

Except, (I think) the billions spent on Optus HFC that got binned is wasted forever. Unless you had shares via your super maybe you got a few cents back.

          Hashtag turnbulltravesty 😂

      • +5

Because NBN has to service the whole country, which is generally a lot less dense than the CBD. These lower cost options only service the cheapest cost-per-connection rollout areas, the densest parts of the city.

Generally the original idea for the NBN was it should be setup to service the cheap connections and the expensive ones with more or less a monopoly on connections. Then the cheap ones can effectively subsidise the less dense/more rural ones, giving fairer service to all. By letting a handful of retailers undercut NBN in the cheap service areas and skip servicing the expensive service areas it undermines the business model of NBN overall, pushing NBN prices up for everyone that only has NBN as an option.

      • +13

Because thanks to the LNP we basically have to pay for the whole NBN twice.

        • +1

          "Because thanks to the LNP"

          Ya not wrong there narelle

current cost estimated to be around 61 billion instead of the Labor party $46 billion for fibre to the premises.

And now we have sh*t nbn 61 billion

do not blame me i voted labor.

    • That's some fantastic pricing! Looks to be Melbourne only for now though?

    • +3

      Cries in WA

    • Wish they were available for me too

  • +28

    No thanks mate.

Seriously this mob is one of the worst providers around. Your hours on the phone and frustration is worth more than $10/month.

I would not recommend them to my worst enemy.
Many ozbargainers went through hell last time with them. They denied all responsibility and I had to go for the TIO to get refunds on the service they promised but never provided.

I churned away and magically everything was fixed instantly.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/754208

      • +4

Wot? How can you fail to sign up properly?

        • +2

You kind of can't, apart from inputting the wrong Location ID entirely. Which is easier than it seems for some addresses due to the address database being a mess sometimes. In that case you'd end up porting someone else's connection instead.

Which clearly isn't what happened above, so I don't know why it was brought up.

        • +1

They submitted the forms upside down and didn't do the CAPTCHA properly. Is that bike in that frame? Is that a "y" or a distorted "g"? Did you click on all the crossings?

    • +2

      Thanks, Mate. ;)
You saved me some potential headaches.

      Will go with Tangerine instead.

      • -2

They all the same in terms of services .. been with both.. Tangerine were acutely a pain to deal when there was outage.. with even tho NBN were causing the issues but Tangerine has offsure call centres.. took the ages to deal with NBN co and come back to me.. get what you pay for.. IMO i would go with Mate before Tangerine.. cheaper too. My connection is HFC, might be different story for other connection type.

        • Tangerine were acutely a pain to deal when there was outage

I can't relate to this statement.
There happened to be one or two NBN outages when I was with More and Tangerine in the past.
They did send me a text before and after.

What kind of treatment are you expecting from them?
Yes, their call centre is in the Philippines.

IMO i would go with Mate before Tangerine

Judging from the number of users here who have posted their horror stories, in particular @plasmapuff and @TanedaR, and the lack of similar horror stories from Tangerine or More, I would say Tangerine or their sister company More (if you are CBA customer) is a much much safer choice.

          My connection is HFC

          Same.

Will Mate give me a full refund if I am dissatisfied with their service within 14 days?

          • @DoctorCalculon:

Will Mate give me a full refund if I am dissatisfied with their service within 14 days?

I got a full refund. That was smooth but just don't do it.

            • @AsukaST:

I got a full refund. That was smooth but just don't do it.

Damn straight. NBN service like other utilities is one of things you choose, pay for and forget until your 6-months promo is up.

BTW, what RSP are you with now?

              • @DoctorCalculon: southern phone
                https://www.southernphone.com.au/personal/broadband/nbn-broa…
cheapest 50M plan I can find other than mate, 6 month promo, speed is normal
Kogan is 10c cheaper but 3 months promo only.

There are some negative reviews of them on OZB, but I was with them before without any issue.

              • @DoctorCalculon:

NBN service like other utilities is one of things you choose, pay for and forget until your 6-months promo is up.

Set up an email reminder on Google calendar.

                • @AsukaST: Yep. Part of my process. I get a reminder on the 5th billing cycle as some RSPs require a 30-day notice.

BTW, Southern Phone is now owned by AGL.

The guy I spoke with had no idea what IPv6 or CGNAT is.

                  • @DoctorCalculon: Ya I was with AGL NBN for 12 months. Everything was fine. I've never needed to call them so can't comment on their customer service.

          • @DoctorCalculon: I've had horror stories with Tangerine and documented them in the forums

            • +1

@teacherer: True. They got hacked earlier in the year.
However, they seem to be the lesser evil going by the number of negs.

  • +2

I left mates a while back when changed backhaul and evening speeds were unusable.

    Have anything changed since?

I’m with Exetel now, haven’t had issues since switching.

    • +5

Ive churned through so many ISPs last 3 years (Exetel, Tangerine, dodo, spintel, mate etc…) to be honest, they are usually all the same. Most the time you might have issues is to do with NBNCo. not the ISP. But i only stick around for 6 months so not sure thats long enough to provide proper opinion

      • Narh, check posts a year or 2 ago.
Everyone was having the same issues and complaints.

  • Note: Choosing a date does not guarantee connection on that date.

Does anyone have any experience with how likely they are to screw me with an early connection?

    • As long as you have everything set up and you sign up with correct details it should happen on same day. They add this to cover their ass

      • I'm more worried about them connecting me too early.

        • Unlikely - as long as you input the date of the connection, that's when they will connect you from and start billing you

  • +4

I left Mate when they changed their provider. Had horrible internet for months. Before the change, I had no issues with the internet. I ended up moving to Exetel and couldn't be happier.

To be fair, I was happy with Mate until their net turned to crap. Their call centre was great (in Aus).

    • I left Mate when they changed their provider.

How long ago was this, Mate?

      • +3

This was back in 2022, Mate. I believe they switched from Vocus to Wireline.

        • Yes same reason I left to exetel. Unsuitable at evenings

  • +4

    250/25 $85/Month for 6 Months @ MATE

Superloop gives you 1000/50 for the first 2 months for the same price, then free speed boosts after that each month.

    • +2

I signed up a month ago and just called them this morning and they gave me the 1000/50. Good guys Superloop.

  • +1

any love (discount) for the existing customers?

    • +7

If your not churning every 6 months, you paying too much for NBN.. too many loyal shmucks

    • I just signed up with them a couple of weeks ago with KERR20. I asked over chat if I could switch to the new promo for the remainder of the 6 months, but no luck :(

      • If you signed up but haven't activated yet, they will swap you over.. but not if they have already connected you up. Its only $5 pm difference.. not the end of the world mate

        • it takes 30 minutes to connect, so not sure if it's worth my time to save $30 spending 30 minutes on the phone
