we need Jay from Aminoz to start an NBN company as well. The level of customer service in unparalleled.

    • +1

Amino Z is pretty annoying. I last time I bought something from them was years ago and I still get "order follow up" emails. I don't want to unsubscribe because I'm curious to see how long it'll drag out for lol

      • +1

I know but respect the hustle lol. I use a spare gmail account only for my online purchases and subscriptions. That way I can always locate the receipts and keep the notifications to a minimum by not linking it to the gmail app on my phone.

getting 100/40 for $95 from superloop

might be worth it for the sign up bonus but that's about it…

    • +1

Pronto NBN is similarly priced and resells Exetel service.

      • Pronto resells Exetel service.

        and Exetel resells Superloop…

Is there any bandwidth left by the time it filters through to Pronto ?

    • Exetel are doing 100/40 $78.99/month for 6 months using the Superloop network.

  • +28

No, Don't signed up. avoid them at all cost.
I switched to mate in late July because they were the cheapest 50Mbps provider.
Left within a week, at least I got a full refund.

They cut my speed during evening peak (6-11pm) to less than 10Mbps.
I can't even watch youtube or channel 7 online. I can't check my security cameras remotely.
And that was every single evening.
I did a speed test on Ookala and fast.com, it shows 48Mbps download speed.
I believe this ISP has made a special settings for speed testing website so you can't gather evidence to make a complaint.
So I decide to monitor the speed by downloading large files on Bit Torrent.
At around 5:30pm, the speed drops and at 11pm just, it goes back to 50Mbps, every single night.

I left and switched to another ISP, guess what, everything is back to normal.
You may easily find lots of similar reports from angry customers regarding speed issues on OZB or Google review.
I switch ISP every 6 months when discount price no longer available to always get the cheapest price.
I have tried more than 10 ISPs and I can promise you, mate is the worst one.
Just don't waste your money with them. Don't.

    • -5

What type of connection were you? While they may throttle you during the evening, its little far fetch for them to crank some special settings to hack SpeedTest

      • +3

        HFC.
Nah, it can be easily done similar to parental control.

        • Take your word for it. Tend to find ppl on lower services (25/50mbps) get throttled to useable speed more over those on higher 100/250 mbps) since they are lower and harder for most to compare the drop off. I couldn't see someone on 250mbps plan getting throttled down to 10mbps.. perhaps down to 100mbps but in most cases, most would barely notice that.

    • +1

      This is true.
Happened to me hence I left.

    • Could you let us know what city you're in? I'm in Sydney and signed up to Mate last week to their 100Mbps plan - seems to be fine so far; but it is very concerning to hear something like this could happen.

      • +1

i'm in Sydney. It got so bad i couldn't even watch youtube at night.
        FTTP by the way.

    • Have you spent 6 months with Spintel? How do they compare to mate?

    • It throttled my 100/20 to 97 when I was with them.

They seem to shape your connection in addition to the avc as well.

  • +4

I used MATE's NBN a while back. Their internet speed was super unstable, whether it was off-peak or peak.
It could be different now, but beware!

  • +10

Definitely one of the worst isp's I've tried in terms of speed and stability. If you can shill out some extra money for another I'd say go for that

  • +3

Mate only have one POP in Syndey, so its pretty shit connected from anywhere other then Sydney lol

    • How many POPs do they have in Melbourne?

      • +2

one one in Sydney, none anywhere else in Aus. all traffic gets passed through Sydney

  • +3

was with mate a couple of months last year, lots of issues so as other said, not worth the $10

  • @rfc850 I am trying to sign up but asking for a new development fee of $300? Is it something that can be waived?

    • You can't get that fee waived. NBN charges that. I had to pay that fee when I moved into a new developed estate.

    • No you can't get the nbn new development fee waived. Check here if you have access to nbn FTTP.

  • +4

    Not even for free mate

  • they use CGNAT , right?

    • Is this something that's important to have (or not have)?

      • Only if you plan on hosting game servers.

  • Does anyone know if this requires a special router? I have one from Dodo that I'm not sure if it's compatible?

    • what your connection?

  • Worth paying the extra $5 and going with more reliable providers like Dodo or Tangerine, anything is better than the alternative

    https://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/Guides/nbn-100-plans…

Previous customer's complaints about Mate. Notably, slow speeds down to 2mbps on 100mbps plan in evenings.

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/3vw48kkn

    • -3

Mate, that forum was over 2 years ago.. if they were that bad for that long, they might of gone broke by now.. anything recent, not from mid-2022? Plus im with Dodo now and i wouldnt call them that reliable… Been with them 4 months and had 2-3 outages so far. couple may have been NBNco. issue but who knows.

      • Here's the main discussion on whirlpool. Apparently Mate moved from Vocus backend to Wireline a few years back, and is known for it's unstable peak times, speedtests read fine, but Youtube and Netflix report abysmally slow speeds between 6pm and 11pm.

        https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/3n2nn583?p=165

Hence why Dodo and Tangerine being Vocus resellers would be a more confident choice then Wireline (Mate)

  • Superloop has similar deals i’m on the 250 plan now for 85/month

Their overseas routing i found was better esp when playing MMOs and such.

Also you can opt out of CGNAT for free

    • +2

Someone should nuke CGNAT from orbit.

    • how can you opt out

      • call them

        • cheers

  • +5

I understand the negative votes for Mate. Having gone a bad experience myself, I would totally avoid them. Take your business elsewhere.

    • -6

Same but these are based on subjective experiences and the internet is riddled with similar experiences for all ISP's not just MateNBN. End of the day there no real risk of signing up.. they provide 30 day 100% money back guarantee. Plenty of time to weight up if they suck or not. Its like if the internet sucks for more than 1 hour people cant help themselves and go into melt down.. jeez its just the internet.

      • +1

Its like if the internet sucks for more than 1 hour people cant help themselves and go into melt down.. jeez its just the internet.

Yeah, the internet which people use to work from home, study, trade on the stock markets, or even run businesses. Someone like you who lives with mummy and daddy and spends their whole day playing World of Warcraft with no responsibility to the outside world won't understand how important reliable connectivity is to most households these days.

There doesn't seem to be any reason for you to be incessantly responding to almost everyone here trying to defend the shit service other than have some sort of other involvement with them, particularly when you have almost zero technical knowledge.

  • +6

Neg, just avoid this service provider at all cost. Was their customer once and never again

  • This deal is cheaper… cheaper by $6 per 6 months…

  • +5

Mate is the worst ISP i've ever had. they throttle hard any website that isn't akamai, microsoft, steam, google, youtube, apple and probably provision a lot less bandwidth as normal ISPs to save cost.

  • +4

All the people who have negged this deal are the true Mates. Saved me some headache!

  • Can you upgrade and downgrade speeds during period and still get the offer? I don't need 100/40 ATM but will, in 3 months

  • +1

Why are these guys still around? My story, many years ago they changed providers. For 2 weeks I had slow downloads and disconnections, I called in a number of times talking to different people being told that it was my property. I later saw on Whirlpool the reason and just how many people it was affecting. Their support team was lying directly to me and others based on what I was reading. Not one person but multiple and for me 2 weeks before I finally churned away.

  • +2

I switched mate from superloop, what a waste of time. Took me all of about one week to get banned on Overwatch for constant disconnection

  • +1

These guys are shit. Had constant problems in Sydney with their service, slow downs and throttling in the evenings. Also unstable connection. FTTP

  • +1

Word of caution: Lets be mate uses CGNAT and you cannot opt out. May be concern for some Ozbargainer.

    • That is NOT correct.

  • Does anyone have any experience with churning when you have a static IP? Can the same IP be kept?

    • No you will get a different static IP.

    • You won't be able to retain the IP, I would suggest you look into DDNS.

      noip.com

  • -1

For 100/40 pay extra $10 plenty of option and you don't have to deal with Mate which is a big plus.

  • rubbish ISP with bad speeds and instability

  • How does Mate make absolutely any money at those prices..

  • I'm in Philippines at the moment and I'm getting fibre 300/100 for $30 a month.
Australia's internet is an expensive embarrassment

    • What ISP are you with over there? I've just been comparing other overseas pricing recently for curiosity sake

    • precisely, telco and services in general, transport, housing, commerce, etc.

    • Why stop comparing at internet…
What do you pay for a Big Mac?
What do you pay for public transport?
      Etc etc

    • what kind of comparison is this!! what does an average person in Philippines make a month?

      • Why is that relevant?
It's about the costs to the service provider and the profit margin isn't it?

  • +1

Just wanted to share this reddit post here as well for those who are interested….

Letsbemates (MATE) nbn. Don’t do it… (link )

    In short….don't do it..

  • Baffling why this post is still getting upvoted, do people like crappy peak time internet? haha

    • We just like cheap internet.

  • Point of Interconnect in Victoria?

  • how do i know if this is FTTN or FTTP?

  • Mate Ppoe or IPoE? 30 can cancellation notice ??

  • Could be an omen but when I was reading this my mate nbn failed currently download of 1mbps and ping 150😭

  • +2

Something to be aware of in terms of Mate and referrals .. a relative recently signed up (and used a discount code from ozb) and later had two others subsequently use his referral code. Mate denied him the referral credit because:
    - you can only ONE TIME get a referral credit for being a referrer
    - you will not get any referral discount if you have used a discount code
These stipulations are both listed here: https://www.letsbemates.com.au/mate/faq/how-does-your-refer-…

    • I think ie, section 6.C

The person seeking to become a Referred Customer is not making an application to enter into a Contract with Us which
includes terms for a Special Promotion.

So no referral applicable on discount/special promotions.

Also just recently signed up, transferred provider within 15mins of order. Done speedtest and seem to be within 100/20 offering. So far so good.

      • What location are you in? We are currently on the 25/8 Flip $39 deal, it's cheap, but it just feels a little slow. Thinking about this deal instead.

  • How does the first bill work from sign up date to activation date?

From the link, I assume as follows if I sign up today 8th Sept but I need it activated on 20th Sept.

8 sept - 19 sep: Prorata credit on the first bill
    20 sept - 07 oct: prorata charge
08 oct - 07 nov: month in advance charge?

  • +2

Code MATE30 is not valid for the Ripper nbn 50/20 plan.A bit misleading here. On its website, it also says for selected plan not all plans.

    • Agreed. But saying that I reckon it's because people pointed out here that Mate is losing money on it.

  • With the billing at sign up. Does this mean really the 6 month promotion is only really 5 months if you decide to delay your start date?

  • -1

This is not a deal !

    25/5 for $49.90 ongoing !

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/866782

  • All good for me speed is still fast. Sign up is easy and can pay CR card with no surge charge. I'm on FTTC 100/20

  • Code not valid for the 50/20 plan. Just tried and didn't work. Confirmed by live chat agent.

  • Recently churned to Mate from Superloop. Not worth it.
I've had constant network issues & erratic speed (one minute, speed test comes back at 90mbps and next minute it's 10mbps).
Trying to call them to request a waiver of the 30 day notice period to churn to another provider ASAP and can't even get through.

  • This offer seems to have been extended to 31st October 2024.

  • +1

I've been with them for just a few days and already sick of the throttling making video streaming next to impossible on 100/20. I'm getting 4Mbps down on fast.com. Very misleading practices.

  • +1

I switched to mate for the price and the cashback, but its the first NBN provider I've used in a very long I'm having serious doubts about. While speed tests are always fine, stream performance and downloading at times is a bit dubious.

I've never had any issues with tangerine, extel, superloop or leaptel, I think its worth avoiding mate

  • Was with these guys earlier on a 6mo intro plan, atrocious speeds stuck it out for 3mo before switching, not worth it - FTTN/50 plan.

  • +1

Just a heads-up, our MATE30 promotion has been extended from the end of October to 30th November 2024.
