I switched from Mate 250/20 to Spintel 100/20 and I think it's actually better in peak hours.

    • +3

You mean Spintel is better in peak hours? Thinking of switching to Spintel

      • No issues with Spintel (Sydney)

      • Tbh, a couple of dropouts if you dont mind (~10mins) for an uptime of around 2 weeks

        • +1

I'm in QLD and experience dropouts with Spintel. Requires a restart of the modem and then all good again, but I'm getting over it.. happens maybe twice a fortnight

      • +4

SpinTel have one POP in Sydney. If you live elsewhere your web traffic takes the scenic route to Sydney and that results in higher ping if that matters to you.

        • POI?

      • Yep same here. Spintel is always 90-94 even at peak times since I switched during black friday deal. I’m in Melbourne and connection is FTTP. Thanks

  • +1

I can confirm the speed in Upper North Shore is really really unstable since mid 2022

    • +1

Same in Northern suburbs Sydney. Had to switch to Superloop. Solid ever since.
      As ever ymmv

      • +1

Superloop sucks tbh. Had so many issues with slowness then it was a hassle having to call them to cancel.

Moved to ABB.. So much better and more proactive with issues. No BS.

        • Yeah ymmv. Depends on your local exchange.

        • +2

I've had nothing but great experience with Superloop.

      • I'm North Shore too, but lower North Shore. I'm struggling so hard with More right now - are you lower north shore?

  • +4

I switched from mate 100/20 to more nbn 100/20. Much better. No drop outs and going well so far.

  • be nicer if the 25 down plan was 10 up rather than 5

    • +1

Yeah that would be perfect for me as my node connection is max 29 up.

  • +6

Had terrible drop outs with Mate in 3072 about a year ago on 100/20, switched to ABB no issues since

    • Same story with me! (6062)

    • I didn't have drop outs but had my max speed of 94 Mbps drop to 3-8 Mbps during peak hours.

    • Same story for me on 50/20 in perth

  • +3

Found they were terrible in Sydney. Moved to Exetel and it was night and day.

    • +2

Exetel are pretty good. No issues for seven months now.

      • Agree, stable speeds and good self service options.

    • +1

did the same and not looking back

  • these guys use optus?

    • Yer

    • I don’t think so.

    • +4

No. They used to use Vocus, and once were very good.
They moved to Wireline and it was disastrous, peak hour performance was terrible. I imagine they lost a lot of long term customers, me included.

      • Shame. I had them on Vocus few years back with 0 problems and their customer service were always pretty solid as well.

Haven't looked back since I've moved to Superloop

  • +3

My Mate NBN started off well about 8 months ago but in December my peak speeds on 100/20 dropped to 15Mbps. Happened every day for a week. Off peak was fine. Their live chat said to log a ticket, and their ticket support told me to call their help line. I opted to move to Leaptel and speeds have been great.

  • +1

Can’t comment on the quality now, but back when I tried them in 2019 they were awesome.

    • +2

Yes, they used to be amazing. We had them during the pandemic, but they switched from Vocus and weren’t very good anymore.

  • I used MATE down south for two years a while ago and had no issues. However used them to churn a few months back and dropouts and speed were bad (haven’t had those issues with other providers churning) currently on Superloop for six months and super happy

  • Good speeds with Mate 250/20 (3106) for about 1 year, then constant dropouts and packet loss. Spoke to support, said its the biggest issue they are having and ticket with them opened ever since. They even implicitly advised that their service might not be the best for me and "understands if I leave". Monthly for $89 is definitely a great deal, if not for the issues..

    • then constant dropouts and packet loss.

If this is am issue for you then maybe steer clear of Australia Post Nbn.

      • I am fine with Australia post. Just wfo, Roblox and streaking, all great with 100/20

        • As long as you don't need an IP address, AusPost is supposed to be Aussie Broadband white label which is great.

          • @Jimbuscus: Oh cool, thanks for that. I meant streaming btw.

            • +2

@fozzie: streaking's good too, I did that on my last day of year 12.

              • @Jimbuscus: Lol meant streaming and not letting me edit

          • @Jimbuscus: Nah Australia Post Broadband is actually through https://www.btbaustralia.com.au so its actually done totally by them. Auspost is just the brand name and they collect a margin / profit every month.
But they have the customer base to sell to plus they were already selling mobile phones and other stuff so it works.

    • +2

I've had good experience with Leaptel considering value.

      • +1

        Yep they are good.

  • +7

Used them for a couple of years. Service was hopeless and unusable towards the end. Not much effort from them to help resolve. Will never return.

  • Went from Spintel to Mate for churn discount, but Mate was the worst experience I've had with ISPs.
Moved to Exetel and has been going great after the initial 4 day hiccup where nbn had some configuration error.

  • +3

I managed to get Superloop 100/20 for $74.95 for life. I ain't moving.

    • How did you do that? Black Friday deal?

      • +5

I really don't know what happened tbh lol. I did the 6 month special $20/month off which was supposed to go to the original $89.95 then when it did I noticed the new price was $84.95. So I called them acting dumb asking why was I paying 89.95 and they put the price down.
1-2 weeks later I get an email that their doing a price change and offered me $10 off for the life of my account.

      • +2

I think it was this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/750991 I got it too, however I am still planning on moving to tangerine which is cheaper for 6 months than superloops $74.95 .

Also the deal is not $74.95 for life, but $10 off the normal price for life, they may decide to up the price later

    • +1

Why not tangerine? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/748948 cheaper for $62.90

      • Yes, I’m planning to move in 5 months either SL or tangerine and then churn every 6 months. This way I’ll keep the discount.

        • tangerine's offer apparently ends today…

          • @polarq: Offers come and go. I’m going to do in 5 months, fingers crossed SL, Tangerine or Exetel will have something.

          • +1

@polarq: Clicked on the link it’s now showing offer expires 28 Feb for me

            • @spot2001: Looks like it has been extended, which is good 😊

  • I recently tried to switch to them from Optus. Never managed to get three connection to work.
It was really hard to get any support and when I called to cancel they didn't even really seem to care that I was leaving them. Very disappointing.

  • +17

If you like your speed throttled during peak, go for this deal

  • +20

There’s tonnes of people commenting here about poor experiences including dropouts and poor speeds. Sorry OP but I’m neg’ing deal as there is an issue with this retailer.

    • +2

No worries, I have posted my experience as well. They were great up to about 1.5 years ago, but then they moved from Vocus to Wireline.

  • +2

WA people just be aware traffic goes over east first so youll never get a ping below ~50

  • To save a few bucks no thanks ABB worth every cent.

  • +6

just asked if they would give it to me to keep me as a customer, they said no. Now I feel I need to churn out of principal….

    • Unfortunately all the nbn providers are like that.

      • Nbnco provides the 6 month discounts I think, so it's somewhat inevitable I think that the offers from retailers are only 6 month.

  • happy with Tangerine FTTC to FTTP free upgrade deal expires today :)

  • +2

I have been with them for a couple of years now. Lately the speed during peak hours seems inconsistent. It has been usable definitely but not completely happy but the price I am paying is cheapest I can find and that is probably why the issue's. You get what you pay for.

  • wouldn't butter it

  • +3

Mate used to be so good. The price was unbeatable and free static IP. Unfortunately the peak speeds dips reached a point where I had to leave. Superloop hasn't skipped a beat, $5 more expensive and no static IP. Still very very worth it.

  • Joined Mate from iiNet a few months ago (and I'd been with iiNet since they bought Adam). Speed and dropouts are definitely an issue for Mate, and I can't see myself sticking it out if a better deal comes along.

  • +3

Mates is a lying company. I switched out and complained to the government agent.

  • +1

Mate are the worst ISP I've had the displeasure of being with.
Some seriously shonky stuff going on with them.

  • +2

I was a happy customer for like couple of years before it went downhill. Really bad experience for consistent 4-5 months before I switches to AB. I was paying for 250/40 and was hardly getting 5mb regardless of peak hours. I posted a product review along with screenshots. And their support is just worse. Be ready to wait for 1-2 hours before someone will answer and then they will ask you to do stupid tests again and again.

Horrible service. Never going back to mate again.

  • I’ve been with them in Melbourne for 2.5 years and no issues at all. Always fast and I can’t ever remember a drop out, not one.

  • +1

    Don't fall for this.

I subscribed for 100/20 and the speed is unusable during on or off peak

    Speedtest
    https://ibb.co/T0wGPbx

I ended up going back to superloop.

  • +2

    THESE DOGS THROTTLE GENERAL BROWSING.

Use a variety of different speed testers, not just the one they tell you to use and you'll see!

    Not worth it, 4mbps experience.

  • +1

Stay clear. I can also confirm MATE started throttling my net from September 2022. Gaming, YouTube, Netflix started stuttering. I moved over to Leaptel and it's been great thus far.

  • +1

Yea is mate terrible. Was told by them that it was nbn fault got 3 technicians out, no difference. But changed provider to ABB and had no issues. Avoid at all costs. Brisbane, HFC.

  • -1

Cool domain name . Childhood joke reference?

What did one lesbian say to the other lesbian? Les be friends

  • +2

Mate Internet are a disaster and I would not wish them on my worst enemy. I was with them last year on my FTTH connection churning from ABB. I was essentially left with a connection at 3-4mbps (paid for 100/20) and frequent disconnects rendering it unusable.

The worst bit was their absolute denial of the situation and the generic templated responses from their customer service team which they pride themselves on. I had to escalate to the Telecommunications Ombudsmen to get them to apply the joining credit they never applied and the refunds they promised but never delivered.

As soon as I churned to another provider, all the issues were miraculously fixed. They were trying to blame my hardware/nbn physical connection etc… I.e Anything except their substandard product!

    Avoid them at all costs!

    • +2

      Exact thing happened to me.

      Avoid at all costs

  • +2

These jokers can't even re-issue an invoice after they've screwed up and admitted as much. Avoid. Right, Mate?

  • +2

DO NOT SIGN UP WITH THEM. AVOID.

  • +1

I was a very happy and loyal customer that referred family and friends, then they switched out from vocus and I looked like a fool. Please don't join if they are still getting poor reviews. My connection was unusable at most hours of every day.

  • -4

Now that all of you who've negged have left, it's been great!

Honestly though, I had a bit of trouble with them last year with frequent slowdowns in peak times - it mainly only affected the wife's streaming. Complained and they put a ticket up for almost 2 months, blaming an nbn issue, and credited me for the time the ticket was running. Since then, I've had no issues for at least 6 months.

I vaguely remember them sending out a general email apologising saying that slowdowns would happen while they were upgrading something around the same time I had the issues.

    I'm in WA and FTTP.

  • +2

Ryde (NSW) on 250Mbps plan for 2 years before their change, then started getting 20Mbps for weeks before I moved to another provider.

Mate support said there was no widespread problems but the Whirlpool forums and my speedtest.net said otherwise. Multiple support people claimed they did not know what Whirlpool forums are.

Not worth saving $10 a month for all the headaches.

  • Oh wow, when did this all change? I thought Mate and Barefoot or whatever they also went by were actually decent but after reading all these comments they've gone to crap?

I'm looking to switch from ABB business 100/40 with static IP. Currently paying $109 monthly.

Any suggestions? I can't fault ABB haven't had any issues for years but the price I feel just isn't competitive.

  • Looks like a good deal but just chiming in to say I also left mate due to regular dropouts in North West Sydney. Have been fine on Aussie.

  • Mate certainly have the attractive pricing. I found the connection substantially slower after coming from Exetel especially when watching streaming services (Amazon & Netflix 4K) - general web surfing was fine. I've since moved back to Exetel.

  • +1

Heavily throttled. Don't waste your time with them.

It seems the only traffic that's not throttled is traffic to speed test servers.

  • +1

Gosh, shit experiences guys, that sucks. Seems like I dodged a bullet churning to launtel like 2 years ago.

  • On "MORE" for the last 6 months with their CommBank 30% off for 12 months.
They have been great. 250/25 and the speeds have been consistent.
I was told when I asked a rep a couple of months ago, I could port out and come back after a month and get the promo again for 12 months.
    Has anyone done this?

    • Speeds good?

  • Ditto, mate went downhill after they moved away from vocus.

  • Am with Tangerine and my god support is SOO BAD. Tickets take more than 4 days and cancelling is dead tiring as the service hasnt been cut yet with the 14 day trial. 100/20 but realistically had 47/0.63.

Was with superloop before thinking of just saying (profanity) and sign up with AussieBB anyone know any other NBN providers that are actually good?

    Located in NSW Syndey.

  • Thanks for your experience. I was with Exetel and they were good (same company as SL, only negative is they want 1 full month notice).
Currently with Australia Post Broadband and they are excellent.
    Location: South Sydney

  • Switched because of this deal + my deal with Superloop ending and then not wanting to give any other deal and honestly, such bad internet. I even went from 100/20 to 250/20 because of the discount and getting nothing more than 20/2 at best. Currently looking for a new deal around the same price.
