Carl's Jr. - 20 Restaurants Closed

Hey guys, everyone in my restaurant just got fired, no notice period no nothing. Anyway any questions you guys have I can answer

Context: 2 new people were chosen to make the decision, financially Carl's Jr. wasn't doing too well so they closed 20 restaurants and 4 are going to be kept up

Mod 30/7 - 20 out of the 49 Stores have closed down. 4 Continue to trade in administration, 25 stores are independently owned and aren't in administration and trade as normal (including all stores in SA).

Based on the initial stages of this assessment, the Voluntary Administrators will continue to trade 4 of the owned and operated CJ’s Group restaurants on a business-as-usual basis. 20 restaurants will be immediately closed as of the date of the appointment.

The appointment of Voluntary Administrators excludes the 25 restaurants independently owned and operated by third-party sub-licensees. These restaurants will be transitioned to a direct licensed relationship with CKE Restaurants Holdings, Inc. (CKE). The Voluntary Administrators anticipate minimal change in the continued operation of these locations.

  • I drive past Carl Jrs on Sydney road all the time. I really want to go but just never had the right time. It is really in a bad spot too. Is that one closing?

  • +1

Appears 49 stores affected…. but there are 25 independently operated

Think it is the ones run by the master franchise that has gone under.

Imagine being a franchisee and all your head office support evaporate.

Terrible locations. Ballarat and Albury were never going to succeed. Premium burgers in country towns doomed form the beginning.

      • +1

The Albury one never opened. It's just a rebadged ABN from a Melbourne store.

        • +2

Yep, had to drive accross the border to Wodonga..

      • +1

For any popular fast food Albury/woodonga is an excellent location, all the traffic for Melb-Sydney

      • premium? :O

    • +1

Why is each store a separate company ? What the benefit of doing it ?

      • +4

as far as I understand it, each store was its own franchise even when company-owned.

        • +2

          exactly - benefits:
          - You sell the franchise and that's how you fund your rapid expansion and have someone local actually caring about running it;
          - Risk mitigation, spreads it with the franchisee and separates each from the other.

          • @MrFrugalSpend: Sadly they never sold these off so the risk was entirely with head office.

            • @Wiadro: Sure but that was the plan, the question was asked why people do it, not whether they've had success in this case. Regardless, the risk mitigation could still have worked / work yet, as they may have kept profitable stores in separate legal entities isolated along with their transactions with third parties from the rest of the mess.
Clearly all the entities listed here have been dragged into it, that's not to say there isn't others that are still happily not involved that creditors / administrators can't touch. More likely its all one tangled mess and they've thrown in the towel, but its possible with this segregated arrangement and good planning to take out part of a group of businesses only.

              • @MrFrugalSpend: But if the main franchise company topples, don’t they all?

                • @Wiadro: Not in the legal entity sense - not really.
The individual companies are exactly that.
They may not be able to function as Carls Jnr, as that is a brand licensed by the franchisor that fell over so the franchise agreement will be invalidated, but if Joe and Mary Bloggs bought a franchise, own CJ's XYZ Pty Ltd, and they are trading fine, and solvent, then they have their own legal contracts with whoever, maybe even their own lease, so there's no need for them to be dragged into any dissolution or pursued for Carl's Jnr's debts, so they could re-brand their business CJ's Burgers and carry on. A friend of mine did this, they still operate a business today as an independent store that was once part of a franchise group that failed 20+ years ago.

      • You can sell it to a sucker… Franchisee I mean…

If master franchise goes bust I don't hold much hope for the franchisees.

    • Interesting, some of the restaurants that appear on the website appear on this list. I guess the website can't be relied on then.

      • Click on the more information button for each store you think is closing down and see if it does to the right page.

        • Some stores aren't appearing at all (e.g. Knox) but some are with broken links (e.g. Wondonga) and some are fine (e.g. Bringelly). All these examples appear in the list above though, so going to guess that the site admin is still working through the stores.

      • +1

They are in administration only so they may continue trading, or they may not.

    • +1

Sad that my local is on that list. The people there were very good and it was much better than HJ (after a slow start).

    • +1

Totally insane - they like JUST opened Beaconsfield a month or two ago

      • Epsom was opened October last year.

they gave out free burgers for a year to the first person through the door or some similar promotion.. and they didn’t even last a year..

        • Can't have been the location.. I'm sure the demographic of epsom/huntly/jackass flat is perfect for them!

          • +1

@Brick50: From what I've heard and (i know a few people who work in the complex) no one went there, it was over priced for average food. I guess it also didn't help that the bendigo newspaper ran an article about how the people in the nearby milk bar were outraged that their kids wouldn't be able to attend ballet lessons if their profits dropped.

    • A few of these don't even exist yet, can you close something that was never open? 🤣

      • +1

        Masters did.

    • My locals isn’t on this list. Yay! Wonder how long that will last.

FFS, all the WA stores are on here before even opening, was looking forward to this after having it in America earlier this year

  • went a few times, for a cheap lunch ($5 burger and $2 fries)
don't know how they made money tbh
looked full of staff, and no customers

    • It was always suspiciously cheap. I went as recently as last weekend through Wodonga and had a large-ish burger, chips and drink for $9.95. That undercut Macca's and KFC. It's never been very good, though, all the burgers are dry af. I'd honestly rate Hungry Jack's more.

      • +2

I always get a horrible aftertaste with HJ, which I don’t get with Carl JR.
my local everyone was wayyyyyyyy to nice for a $5 burger joint.

      • +1

I'd honestly rate Hungry Jack's more.

        The key is the microwaves.

    • For $5.00 must have been floor sweepings….

Been there twice, had bad experiences both times .. never went again.

    LMAO

    CJ'S Fortitude Valley Pty Ltd ACN 672 087 651

This store is set to open in August and already set to close

    • +1

Bit like a Masters store that was built in Adelaide and nearly ready to go.

The Tarneit store in Vic only opened a few weeks ago and survives for now being a franchisee.

      • The worse was Taco Bell

        Tasteless cold food everytime

    • Waneroo (WA) just approved a Carl’s Jr, Starbucks, Grill’d and Red Rooster.

Wonder if it will ever open.

      • Ahh my old favourite location for the 7 Eleven chopper. RIP.

  • +3

These were my favourite burgers and fries, too bad they are closing. They just opened a store near my area a year ago.

I always got good prices with the app.

  • +5

How do Wendy’s think they will succeed here is beyond me.

    • Run with the Maccas business model…

    • But they have square patties.

Etc.. mostly places never heard of

        • +4

dont forget the onlyfans model who owns 8 houses and is "unemployed"

    • ‘ The CJ’s Group independently owns and operates 24 restaurants, while it is a master licensee to the remaining 25 locations, which are owned and operated by third-party sub-licensees’
      What a surprise 😳

  • +1

Sorry to hear you and your friends have lost your jobs, OP.

  • +7

Sad to see it go when Maccas continues to dish trash to us at high prices.

    • -2

Blame the boomers and their kids.
      They grew up on Maccas.
My boomer father thinks burgers from an independent burger shop or even HJ are absolutely shithouse compared to Maccas.

      • Thats because your dad doesn't watch tiktoks that convince him that burgers from a random food truck with a 2 star food safety rating are better than an established burger company..

        • I wouldn’t eat from a food truck anyway.

      • +1

Weird, considering many of them would have grown up when there were no Maccas around.

      • +1

Maccas didn't even exist in Australia till the 70's and took quite a few years to be prolific. Hell I grew up in the 70's and 80's and the nearest maccas was over 100km's away. If anything your Boomer dad seems a wierd exception.

  • +1

Yet somehow the valuation of GYG holds up high.

    • +3

Held up by hype, $3bn valuation for subpar overpriced fake Mexican food… Can't wait to watch the SP massively tank next quarter.

      • +1

I had it the other day , doesn't deserve the hype . Food isn't nice

  • +5

In and Out burgers would do so well in Australia.

    • +1

I remember i was in LA few years ago waking down the street and a massive line of cars waiting in drive thru till end of the street. crazy

    • Absolutely nothing special

    • +2

The problem is the quality doesn't carry across when they come here - We've seen it time and time again with multiple chains.

      • +2

It should be better hear, Americans have low standards.

        • Hi, I agree with you very much. Our McDonald's is superior to the USA and some parts of the UK/ Europe. I understand that Australia also introduced the McCafe concept worldwide.

    • -1

They aren't that great. In and Out could do well if priced competitively with Maccas though. A fish and chip shop or Grill'd burger is way nicer

      • Yea local burger joint wipes any thought of maccas or hj's now… be better if they had better parking

  • +1

Carl's Jr is dogshit. My sister and her boyfriend won a free burger every week for a year, so I'd go with them every so often. Food ranges from average to very shit. I knew they were destined to go out of business when I first saw their nuggets, which are the pink slop shaped into a star with terrible crumbing. The fact that everyone who was running the place was okay with those nuggets really goes to show it's a miracle they even lasted this long.

They also had the worst hamburger (the cheapest plain burger you can buy) in Australia, beating out Hungry Jacks somehow. That's as impressive as it is terrible.

So yeah, everything was shit and this is no surprise they've shut down.

    • Food ranges from average to very shit

you could say that for all the big US take away and vomit stores….

    • DOG SHIT!

  • +2

Reminds me when Quiznos went balls up, Subway they are asking for $16 for a footlong when I can make a better sandwich at home. Surely Subway are next, the corporate structure of chain restaurants isn't bringing the brand recognition and economies of scale that it used to. This correction is neccessary.

    • +3

Subway has far lower overhead costs, you can run a location with just one staff member during quiet times, and the tiny storefront means low rent. A dead store can still be profitable, so they'll stick around like cockroaches in an apocalypse.

      • Subway is decent enough to keep me come back whenever i pass by. Seem busy in Sydney cbd around lunch time.

    • +1

My issue with subway is everything tastes the same.

  • +1

they need to spice up their Ad campaign

  • Damn, My kid loves their star nuggets a lot. He will miss them now :(

  • There's a whole bunch of stores in SE Queensland not on the voluntary admin list… more than 4.

I am also assuming the Acacia Ridge store is not the Acacia Ridge in Brisbane… pretty sure there's no Carl's Jr there.

Brought to you by Carl's Jr

    • +1

You are an unfit mother. Your children have been placed in the custody of Carl's Jr.

  • Sorry to hear OP. Hope things get better.

  • Carl Jnr tastes different in America.

    • How different? I've only tasted the ones in America and thought the burgers were pretty good. The comments in this thread say the Australian version is inedible.

      • it's better in the way of taste profiles are dialled up like salt and fat… but also they have different things on their menu as well.

our Maccas here taste better than America..

        • How long ago since you've tried McD in the US? I tried it half a year ago and they've finally dropped the corn-based sweetener. The bun is sugar glazed. The lettuce isn't as crisp but the USA burgers are tasting a lot similar than they used to.

          • @skid: I haven't tried American, but the Japanese is top notch. It leaves Australia in the shade.

            • @Daabido: Yeh, agree. It cost double when I was there, but worth it.

      • +1

The quality varied from store-to-store. I never thought much of it at the Docklands store, but the Altona North store always served up great food.

  • Just opened the one near me last month, I was so excited I love Carls Jr - So bummed now

  • Never got to try Carl's, I live only 10 km from Melbourne CBD yet would have to travel and hour (there and back) to get to the closest one.

They seem to mainly have places in the far outer suburbs.

  • MSJB, if these burgers were better than Hungry Jacks they would not have gone belly up.
The truth of the matter as at least HJ has always been consistent. Carls Jr had a typical bait and switch happening. Open up a new store, ensure the quality was top than eventually change it. Hope no one notices it and move on.

Goodbye Carl's. No one shall miss you

    • Hope no one notices it and move on.

Doesn't seem to have affected the "established" franchises. I mean Maccas has successfully manage to shrink their burgers and people still eat their food…

  • +2

Carls, hungry jacks, burger king…. all the same broiled meat paddies.

  • +3

What's the likelihood of Wendy's, Jollibee and in and out surviving now in Aus?

    • in n out has the brand behind it, its like free advertising from the usa (LA) social media scene and influencers, where as carls jr was meh

    • Maybe if they don't open a whole bunch of stores rapidly they'll do alright.

      • they dont even do that in USA, they are very careful i watched a whole doco about it, was interesting, they are only present in Western USA for that reason, they dont wana expand and loose quality, they also wana own the entire line of produce, all in house
