YouTube Premium - Overseas Payment Method Crackdown Discussion Megathread

Guys, I have been on Argentina and they found out.

I got this email. I can’t go to India as there are no VPN services and credit card doesn’t work. Which country do I go to next to get similar value for money like Argentina?

“ Your YouTube Premium membership was canceled because we believe the signup country of Argentina was inaccurate.”

Mod:
As this appears to be a hot topic as of Q4 2024 ( large numbers of users being emailed by YouTube that their Australian payment method is not being accepted. The emails being sent mention that "YouTube Premium memberships based in Country X require a form of payment issued in Country X.",

Hence all discussions of similar nature will be moved to this thread.

      What blocker do you use

      Beta

  • +1

Well, I hope things don't change. Have had an Indian account for longer than I can remember. Sure as hell won't pay full price.

  • I use StopTheMadness on Mac and iOS. It doesn't block the ads, it just fast forwards through them in a split second. Guess it's a matter of time before that is blocked too though.

    • Adguard on Mac, uYouPlus on iOS?

      • I use Wipr for general ads. Used to work with YouTube before the crackdown.

        • AdGuard still does, Wipr never really worked for me.

    • I wonder how that works? Does it delay the start of the video to buffer the streaming of the ad in real time and just not show it?

      • No idea. But it works. Most of the time, 1 in every 200 or so I need to refresh the page.

    worth considering GrayJay for Android
many media platforms rolled into a single app

Youtube, Odysee, Rumble, Patreon, Twitch, Kick, Nebula, SoundCloud, PeerTube, Bilibili

ads blocked; login required for premium content

list of alternative front ends for many services

    • Decent list. Will try it when I got time.

  • I hope they don’t eventually put 4k quality under premium

Does anyone know how to search for some these apps on a Samsung 2023 tv please? When I search for them it says it can't find them. Is there something else I need to download first? Or do I search somewhere else?

Amazon prime video will have ads or $3.99 per month for ad free

Turkey working fine. There will always be one that works. Make a new account and off you go.

  • Pakistan working fine!

Erhm which email did you get?

      Hi XYZ,

Your YouTube Premium membership was canceled because we believe the signup country of Argentina was inaccurate.

If you want to maintain access, please sign up for YouTube Premium again within the next few weeks, otherwise your YouTube Premium benefits will end on June 17, 2024 and your plan will not renew automatically.

  • Thank you guys. Lots of insights and most I was not even aware of.

I use iPad and iPhone most of the time for YouTube Premium and can save informative videos, download documentaries etc. If I use Revanced app will all that work? Above all is it free?

If the above fails then how do I get visa for India or Turkey? India doesn’t allow VPN and requires local credit card. Turkey doesn’t allow Australian credit cards anymore and most people use some sort of credit or other form of payment.
I use “fastest VPN” and can try Ukraine or Pakistan.
Can anyone confirm how much do you pay in AUD for Pakistani or Ukrainian visa?

    • Revanced is Android only.

There are iOS alternatives however I suggest you do your own research so you know what you're getting into.

    • Revanced only works on Android. Not iOS.

      As others have mentioned:

      Android: Revanced
      Android TV: SmartTube
PC: uBlock Origin + SponserBlock for YouTube

      • Thanks but I need for iOS. Happy to pay but not Australian outrageous price.

How do I get to Ukraine or Turkey using vpn?

        • iOS: uYouPlus

          • @ldd-mn: but their website says it only lasts for 7 days?

  • I VPNed to Ukraine and Turkey then went to YouTube app to renew. It still shows Australian currency to me. What am I doing wrong?

I used youPIP Revanced it’s not free.

    • If you're trying the VPN route, try on a desktop web browser.

I’m still in India, even after I updated my expiry date when my credit card renewed. Will never pay full price.

    • Mines cards coming up for renewal in October. Did you need to do anything else apart from entering the new date?

  • Please would someone detail the steps to do this thing for Ukraine / India etc? Do I need to also pay for a VPN ? Does it result in noiticably slower video streaming, if I am accessing it via these far-off countries? Does it also work for Spotify premium, or only youtube?

Did you check the link Spackbace already helpfully supplied further up the thread?

    Newpipe.

  • Hi OP,
I'm using my UP card which is subsidary of NAB. This works for Youtube India ATM. Give that a go.

Also not using any VPN for this.

Personally I just pay for premium and have done for 2-3 years now. It's just not worth the level of stuffing around to avoid ads on every platform for a family of people for the sake of $5/person a month and given how much YouTube content I and my family consume it's a bargain plus I do actually want to support the creators I'm watching without spending $500 a month on Patreons lol

    • I’ll probably go this way if my Turkey gets the crackdown.

Considering I work with video in my day job and use YouTube all the time for following tutorials, it might as well be a business expense as well I guess.

  • Has anyone else actually had their accounts cancelled or is this just a one off thing?

  • +5

Tell them you'll stop using Argentina when Google stops off-shoring their profits to avoid paying tax in Australia…

    • "We believe the jurisdiction you're attributing tax to is inaccurate"

    • Love this. Laying off their workers too.

  • -1

I have now followed every step on the links provided above.
After I pick up my Turkey, India or Argentina profile in Google payment website update my expired credit card ..Then I went to YouTube renew my plan site all through browser. When I try to pay it says the card I’m trying to pay is not linked with the country (something along that line)

My card expired and I’m trying my best to update.

I also paid for $79 for VPN by mistake CyberGhost thinking I’ll get 7 days free trial but they instantly charged me. When I go to India and other vpn checking online I found all servers are based on USA Ip.

    • Malaysia works but its more expensive - like $7-$8 a month I think

    • Try disabling the VPN just before you hit the button for payment.

  • Vanced is almost 1:1 with default youtube app,
but for ppl looking to reduce youtube consumption might want to look at newpipe, again android only

  • Greyjay works fantastically it has all premium features, no adds and can do other platforms aswell you dont even need to log in after it pulls your subscribes and more

this is a straight up troll post, no one else has received this notice

    • +2

What do mean by that? I know few people received this who aren’t in OzBargain. Also, Google as it’s also mentioned in few forums. I’m happy to upload a screenshot.

    • It's looking that way. I've got YT Argentina and it's still working.

Saying that, my Lebanon Adobe recently got cancelled, so this could still happen.

    • +1

lol I really and genuinely don't know how to react to a comment that clueless. Me getting this exact email yesterday brought me here, and I have absolutely nothing to do with Ozbargain.

In fact, this place seems to be the only one on the entire internet talking about that for the moment. I have been enjoying Premium for almost a year (ordering from Ukraine in my case at the time, around July 2023). It seems they've just found me out. I refuse to believe I'm the only one on this planet (like all search engines seem to suggest at this moment).

Some here suggested YouTube were less likely to find you out if ordering from Ukraine. I allow myself to chuckle hard on such naivety. I've just got caught myself after a year. Does anyone knows if they started to mass-target users starting from yesterday, or did they simply decide to target some few select users out of the blue? Or does anyone know if YouTube does that on a regular basis? Just me and OP getting that exact email wording as of now seems to suggest it's fairly new, or me and justanick were the cursed ones.

      • I’m surprised we both can’t be the only ones. I’ve got 4 other cases but they aren’t on OZB.

I think some crack up is on. If you manage to find out a way around please let me know.

  • India user here and still got my premium

    Ukraine.

  • You can run uBlock origin on Android as well in Firefox.

You can buy a dell Optiplex for like $50 that will run 4k YouTube, Amazon Prime etc, then use one of these or these with your TV. Its great

Once you sort this out its less trouble than vpns and overseas accounts.

You could even run android tv emulation if there are smart tv applications you must have, but I think you can do most services in the browser anyway.

    • Or just get a Chromecast 4K with Google TV?

      • Are you able to block all ads on Chromecast 4k without any subscriptions, dodgy apps, vpns or dns ad filtering etc?

        • yes smarttube

          • @belongsinforums: For the most part SmartTube only appears to work with YouTube, what about outside of that?

            • @stedmaster: Then DNS filtering, but I'm not sure what other ads you might be talking about.

              • @ldd-mn: But the point was that you didn't have to use any of that.

    • Nothing worst than using kb/mouse when you're trying to relax on the telly.

      • Media keyboards don't have mice but a track pad all in one, like the links I posted if you open them, though they're old ones.Typing on a keyboard is less stressful than trying to select on screen characters with a remote. Got rid of apple tv a long time ago because of that.

But if you really want to just stick with a single remote you can get it for the pc as well with floating cursor and back keyboard

Think it depends what you use it on as to how good it is, I am tempted just to try it out on mine.

        • By all means I'm a pcmr but you need to understand ergonomics and ui.

You can use a chromecast remote without looking at it.
You don't need to type, it's got voice input

Press the power button on the chromecast remote - TV boots up, on the right source input and receiver switches on. Ready to go in 5 secs and even loads the last video you were watching.

Can't imagine the janky-ass process a $50 optiplex would give you.

          • @krisspy: Obviously using a chrome cast is going to be the easier option for most people, as to the mental unknown and perceived complexity of using something like an Optiplex. But really once you start using it, its not as bad as you're imagining.

There are many options for air remotes some apparently do voice as well Some have IR programming or key assign options, or are basically just like tv stream box remotes. I am going to try one of these, although you already have voice typing in a lot of services or accessible in any browser.

The OptiPlex can wake instantly from any device input, most modern tvs can be set to wake on input

You technically don't even have to turn it on for months at a time.

Sure it might do an update, but Chromecast does updates too. I've not seen an update when I've gone to use the Optiplex.

Its only more complicated if you have a number of smart tv apps or services you want to use. But for normal streaming and ad free youtube, as to intial comment and post, at most you're just switching tabs.

So its about the same with normal use, just not having ads anywhere, and many more convenient options.

  • I've never paid fou YouTube premium as I can watch it and free using VPN Unlimited a.k.a Keepsolid VPN. All I do is connect the VPN to Bosnia Herzegovina, and not only can I watch it ad free but I can also download the videos.
    Hope this helps.

  • Haha

Revanced wouldn't work for sh*t on all my devices.
My cars youtube only works with a premium membership.

    Paying about $4.54/mo on Philippines

  • Im currently paying 6aud a month for it cant remember which country i did it under

  • I'm still rocking Premium via Argentina, hopefully it lasts awhile longer.

    • Same. They tend to do these in waves so there's a sense of inevitability

  • +1

I use Adblocker + uBlock Origin and get no ads on Youtube at all

The only thing I can't do is use youtube on mobile with the phone locked. That's only necessary for music. I pay $14/month for Spotify Premium for the convenience and otherwise don't use any other streaming services.

Live sports I use streaming websites

    Movies I torrent

  • Wig, fake moustache and learn Spanish.

  • Been a youtube subscriber for years until the recent enormous price hike, now use smart tube next for free

  • I need to find someone in Argentina to use one of my family plan slots, maybe that would work?

  • Guys I’m an iOS apple user and use YouTube a lot on my iPhone. Most of the solutions provided are for Android users.
But good news I’ve found a solution and it worked.

I’ve managed to find a Pakistani friend and he has his credit card from Pakistan. I created a new profile with location and credit card from Pakistan. I tried using Australian ANZ, BankWest and Commbank cards all says region and card doesn’t match so I can’t add a card.
Next I used VPN to Pakistan you went to YouTube premium payment. At this stage I could see offers to pay by Rs (Pakistani currency).
If you don’t use vpn you will get Australian currency $22++ a month. After my account was approved I’m paying $3.89 a month.

    Finally success.

I hope this helps someone in my situation.

    • So you pay your friend every month while his c
Pakistan ccard sits in your Google account free for your use?

      • Yes that was the plan but it didn’t work.

  • Brave browser on iOS or Android has been my alternative

  • Not a troll post. I received a notice from Google in February to prove my address and whether I was on holidays or not. I gave them my Pakistani address and told them yes I am on extended holiday for now. Since then, no issues but I know one day they will turn it off lol.

PS. I pay $4-$5 per month for YT Family subscription.

  • I'm still smarting from having to resort to paying full price for Netflix. And they just put that up to $26 a month.

  • +1

    Use Brave, Firefox, Vinegar.

  • When I signed up my VPN was connected to an Australian server, but for some reason YouTube thought I was in Indonesia.

  • My Turkey one still works fine, but thanks for the heads up. I’ll be switching accounts as soon as they catch it and terminate my Premium Family membership.

  • This charging is full price policy must stop!

FYI, google could find out in 1.23 seconds your most geolocation.

  • I was actually in Argentina and created my youtube account whilst I was there, no issues so far…

  • Lots of gurus here, is that any apps the blocks Facebook ads? Please save the 'Facebook sheep' spiel if any, I keep my sanity by doom scrolling while the kids try to sleep

  • my YT Premium Turkey is still going strong

  • My last post didn’t last 24 hours. I received an email that my subscription got cancelled

    • Wow so the account using a Pakistani card with account in Pakistan was cancelled too?
