YouTube Premium - Overseas Payment Method Crackdown Discussion Megathread

Guys, I have been on Argentina and they found out.

I got this email. I can’t go to India as there are no VPN services and credit card doesn’t work. Which country do I go to next to get similar value for money like Argentina?

“ Your YouTube Premium membership was canceled because we believe the signup country of Argentina was inaccurate.”

Mod:
As this appears to be a hot topic as of Q4 2024 ( large numbers of users being emailed by YouTube that their Australian payment method is not being accepted. The emails being sent mention that "YouTube Premium memberships based in Country X require a form of payment issued in Country X.",

Hence all discussions of similar nature will be moved to this thread.

      • Yes. I think either they found we are using this loop hole through OZB or I’m in Australia geolocation. My current account elapses in 2 weeks.

The vpn crap of pointing to Pakistani server failed. I don’t get it. Let’s say I was living in Pakistan and subscribed to YouTube the legal way. Then I move to Australia does that mean I have to pay Aussie prices? WTH

  • A great option for IOS & Mac Safari users is Vinegar.

It forces youtube to use the generic HTML video player, enabling all the usual features such as pop out window playback, whilst keeping speed adjustment, closed captioning etc etc. It even works with Sponsorblock too.

If you use an Apple TV it supports airplay so you can dodge the ads via Airplay to the TV too.

Only downside is you need to use safari to browse youtube - so you'll need to uninstall the youtube app if you don't want it to constantly try and kick you out of the browser into the app.

It's a few dollars but the developer has been keeping it up to date for years and years now, would highly recommend it.

  • Agentina still working fine for me (touch wood) but I did get an email saying they've bumped up the price. From around $1.90 AUD Family to $6.30 AUD. Still happy to pay that.

All devices here are behind a VPN, could that be the difference?

I guess I won't be shocked if they pull it in the coming days.

  • If only our government would send them that same email for funneling every transaction through Ireland.

  • why don't you just use ublock origin ? never get ads

  • I am confused. I’m using same card for Google one and vpn to sign up. I’m using Google drive on a daily basis nothing changed. However, YouTube decided to track me and disconnect me from their services.

Do you guys go to YouTube settings in iPhone app and select Argentina Turkey as the location?

I used location as Australia just found out.

    • I've used Australia here from day 1. My Arg Youtube still going strong.

      • Could you tell me the steps? Which vpn did you use?

        • I just use NordVPN via one of the deals here, got like 98% cashback for 3 years. I use Australia for the best speed options unless I need to jump overseas for specific use cases. And that's about it. Honestly I thought I'd be one of the first to be cut loose but it continues to work for some unknown reason.

If you mean signing up in the first place, there are a few steps i dont remember I'm sorry, it involved generating a fake address in Argentena and using your Australian card. There will be a past thead/deal about it thouh.

          • @Click_It: I’ve got the profile created and card added.
However I need to log to vpn to go to Argentina to see the YouTube price in Argentina currency.

After all that I get an email within 24hours that I’m using YouTube in the incorrect country.

  • Mr Erdogan is ordering veils.
    Good or bad idea?

  • My backup credit card expired and for some reason YouTube cancelled my Premium that I signed up through Turkey with. I tried to go back and do the same thing as last time, however, it told me that my credit card country didn't match. After some trial and error I got it to work.

I used Hotspot Shield and connected through Indonesia. It's price was IDR 59K which is under $5.50.

My next payment isn't until July and I'll update then but this was the only route that let me put my card in and accept all the details.

Yep I did the same thing but with Argentina. After disconnecting the vpn and using YouTube from Australia it tracked me and cancelled by subscription.

  • Tired to subscribe to YT Ukraine today but YouTube woouldnt let me go to the subscription page saying couldn't verify my location. I used VPN to connect to Ukraine.

I created a Google account using Ukraine as location but was asked to verify the mobile no. That's where the problem is I think

  • FOk! THey just got me in Pakistan. It is over.

    • Same! BAH!!!!

  • Tried to restart and got this : Transaction declined. This purchase requires a payment method from your billing country.

    Any workarounds ?

  • Got my Turkey account which I've had for years flagged today, not paying $17 for no ads. Off to Firefox + adblock for me, f*** you Google 😂

  • Brought here as my India account got cancelled today :(

  • Just got the email moments ago. Subbed from Pakistan, losing my sub next month :(

    • I didn’t even get an email!

  • They caught me

Your YouTube Premium membership was cancelled because we believe that the sign-up country of Turkey was inaccurate.

  • Same. Just received an email saying my Turkey subscription is inaccurate and my subscription will end later this month. Oh well, guess I will just return to YT with ads.

    • Same. They just lose income. Morons

  • Argentina user here that just got busted. I noticed the message a few hours ago. :(

If Premium Lite allowed background play, I would just subscribe to that, but there is no way I am paying $16.99 a month.

    • Brave browser will do background play.

  • @I Smell Pennies SOS lol

    • Praying I don't get it @Repstar

      • Save us! Oh,wise one.

  • I got this recently. I was in YouTube Premium via Pakistan. Previously had it via Argentina, cancelled it (because I wasn't using much) and re - signed a few months ago to Pakistan. Silly question but has anyone else tried giving it a couple of months and doing it again? I presume that doesn't work (or they pick it up quicker), but maybe it does.

    • I feel like they have manually flagged my account as AUS now. Tried multiple different VPN’s, I can see the renewal in PKR currency, but when I go to pay it changes it to AUD.

      • Thanks for your reply. I still have my Premium until the end of the month but good to know.

      • Happens to me as well! I keep getting a country error.

  • Just a heads up for anybody that was or still is using their 28 Degrees Mastercard - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/860511

From next month they are introducing a monthly $8 card fee and the interest rate is rising to 27.99% p.a.

  • Damn my India account got hit today I have until September 11 to find a solution, most of our YouTube is on Apple tvs and iPads so time to start researching I guess

Interestingly they seem to have set my location to Singapore so my renew options are in SGD which would workout to about $10 cheaper than the AU family price but still much higher than my Indian price was

Just got an email about my Turkey subscription being cancelled today.

    • Same bro, after many many years. Sadness

    • My own YT is family acct, it still opens and Premium appears on the top but every video is black and says "Content is not available" and Comments are off for every video. I cannot play anything. I cannot even add more people to the family plan. I haven't got an email yet but checking my payment profile and the Turkey address has been removed but the card information is still there. My "family" members have no problems with their accounts at all. It's really weird. I have a feeling they will be closing my account as they are restricting my viewing of everything. It started on 21/08.

  • It’s so sad for me too. I couldn’t get visa to any country as of now.

  • Got hit with this today, they blocked my India account.

  • Is the iPhone/Apple Account option the only way forward now?

    • Can you elaborate on what this method is? I'm not familiar.

      • An Apple ID set up in a cheap country (e.g. Turkey) and using gift cards to subscribe at a lower price.

      • Follow the steps on this thread but obviously ignore the appleTV parts

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/805849

Works out to just under $7 Australian per month if you via Apple India for the family plan

        • Can anyone confirm if this is working?

  • Mine was hit as well. I was in India. Got a few more weeks, then ad's it is. Not paying stupid AU pricing thats over streaming services with lots of content.

  • Have been on Argentina since 2021, still going strong (for now). Only thing is, I want to change the payment method on my account (signed up using 28 Degrees card which I want to cancel) but it won't let me.

Anyone have any tips on changing payment method?

  • Partial fix:
Set VPN to Poland, paid with revolut card, works out to be around $19aud for premium family plan. Not as good as ~$5 I was getting prior to the ban, but better than $33 that it would have reverted to

    • Just under $7 a month if you sign up through Apple India and buy India gift cards off Amazon

  • Signed up through Apple India last week and now they are raising the price for the family plan to 389 rupee a month if you pay via Apple. Still better than the other options

  • I was doing my subscription through the India pricing, got the email a couple weeks ago about location not being accurate. Tried updating details via an AWS box and getting flagged for payment details need to match the country.

Will need to see what other options are available. The aussie pricing is egregious..

Not sure if this will help anyone but I was kicked off YT family Turkish plan today.

I managed to successfully sign back up to an individual plan at 75.99TRY/month by using my Turkish Apple account and signing up via the YT Music app. This uses preloaded credit from my Turkish Apple account which has been loaded up via giftcards at Turgame. Cant be bothered writing a full tutorial but i'm sure others can! I havent tested this with a family subscription which also is available via this app method.

I’ll be releasing my guide on this shortly.

      • Yayyy

      • Will it be purely for those with Apple account or android too?

      • Just got the cancellation mail today and got about 3 weeks left, so this came at a perfect time. Can't wait for the guide

      • Any update on this method? Is it working for everyone?

    • +3

Thanks, just signed up for the family plan using this method for 149.99TL (AU$6.35). A little more expensive than what I was paying before, as it includes the Apple tax.

A tip for anyone else: If you still have time left on your subscription that was paid via a different method, wait until the end before signing up through Apple, as it appears that any remaining time on your sub gets forfeited.

      • With this option, do you need to "leave" the family with all of your accounts that have previously been using turkey, and then add them to your new (via apple) family you make? I currently have a dummy gmail account as my "family manager" and then my, my wifes and my sons gmails as the family members. Do i need to move all three of us over to the new apple created accounts family? Hope that makes sense!

        • Leave your Google family as is. No need to create an Apple family. Just be signed into YouTube as your Family Manager account and pay for YouTube using your Turkish Apple account. The Apple account doesn’t need to have the same email address (or any other details) as your Google Family Manager account.

          • @Hargain Bunter: Isn't it cheaper with Indian YouTube? Or does this process not work with India?

            • @silo: I haven’t tried this particular process with India.

            • @silo: I know there was an issue a while ago with Indian family accounts - no dramas if you just wanted a single one - so maybe that may be a decider? Im going to give this method a whirl, but wont hold up too much hope……..if they only charged $5 a month, Id just pay it!

  • Merged from New Requirement for YouTube Premium Turkey (Requires a Form of Payment Issued in Turkey)

    Hi All,
Just wanted to verify if anybody else using YouTube Premium Turkey has received similar updates recently?

I have been using YouTube Premium Turkey Family Sharing option (monthly subscription) for a long time and used my ING Orange Everyday VISA card for payment.
However I just received email from YouTube advising if I want to maintain my membership then I need to update my payment which requires a form of payment.
Otherwise my membership will not automatically renew from next month resulting end of this subscription.

I am not from Turkey and have no friends/relatives based in Turkey unfortunately…
Any idea if there is a way to get a Turkey based payment from Australia? I have both Revolut and Wise but I dont see any suitable option there.

Otherwise what would be the next best option?

    Thanks in anticipation.

    • I received the same email today, no idea what to do now apart from paying Australian family plan and splitting it with friends

Have you tried updating your form of payment?

      • yeah. it has to be from turkey apparently

    • Debit card rather than credit card is the go.

      • Just got the same email for Turkey with a debit card

This will become more and more common as companies try to stop people circumventing geo-restrictions.

Buying a Turkish Google Play gift card might work (Source), but also comes with its own risks.

Gotta learn to live without youtube fellow brethrens.

I've never met anyone that doesn't watch YouTube lol

Merged from YouTube Is Asking for Indian Issue Credit Card

I have just received an email from YouTube saying that they will require an Indian issued credit card for payment as of this December. I am clearly not in India and don't have an Indian CC :)

What are the alternatives now to save on the subscription?

    • +3

      try gaslighting them
