YouTube Premium - Overseas Payment Method Crackdown Discussion Megathread

Guys, I have been on Argentina and they found out.

I got this email. I can’t go to India as there are no VPN services and credit card doesn’t work. Which country do I go to next to get similar value for money like Argentina?

“ Your YouTube Premium membership was canceled because we believe the signup country of Argentina was inaccurate.”

Mod:
As this appears to be a hot topic as of Q4 2024 ( large numbers of users being emailed by YouTube that their Australian payment method is not being accepted. The emails being sent mention that "YouTube Premium memberships based in Country X require a form of payment issued in Country X.",

Hence all discussions of similar nature will be moved to this thread.

Adblocker? Revanced? Just pay normal price for Premium?

    • +1

+1 for Ad blocker. Watch through the browser. You still get ads, but only at the start.

      • +57

None at the start either with uBlock Origin, at least not in my experience.

        • +2

+1 for ublock. I used to use adblock for chrome but that made youtube lag like crazy. ublock literally blocks all ads, straight to the video.

          • @DiscoJango: Youtube has adds?

not sure who would use the internet without a decent addblocker.

            • +4

@Antikythera: I previously had AdBlock disabled for Youtube, (except when using vanced/re-vanced to minimise as enabling ads broke things) and now pay for premium because I like to support the creators I watch, especially the smaller ones.

              • @witheredcouch: many creators I follow say they dont want me to waist a minute to make them 0.01 cents. And advocate the use of Patreon aso instead.

                • +1

@ripprind: None of the creators I have followed have expressed that message. I do support some of them on patreon or other services. Plus, I got sick of the bugginess of re-vanced and find being able to minimise videos and play in the background a must-have so kinda had to go Premium anyway.

        • +1

YT was detecting uBlock Origin and refusing to play (FF, desktop). Will try an update.

      • +10

There is also an extension "Sponspor Block for Youtube". Combine with Bypass Paywalls, uBlock, Universal Bypass, and an Overlay Blocker (eg Poper Blocker, PopupOff or Overlay Remover Auto).

Fight back against Big tech. Don't let them win.

        • for the bypass paywalls do you use a site or a chrome extension?

        • Thanks for your tip! Are these for Windows or iPhone?

        • Fight back against Big tech. Don't let them win.

          What about the YouTube creators?

      • Use the Brave browser it has a built in adblocker

Just pay normal price for Premium?

the other two things are 'fine' but this last one sir im going to have to take you ozbargain card for suggesting this

      • Haha fair enough, disregard that.

(lynch mob turns and looks in your direction …. GET HIM!)

    • Still working? Not very positive by the latest comments.

  • +11

Hmm, I guess that's bad news for me too. I've been in Argentina for years, as far as Youtube is concerned.

  • +7

I've been paying for YT premium via Turkey using an iOS account. hopefully its harder for them to crack down on that.

    • Same as my Google One subscription. Maybe they still want to keep iOS users. Guess too late for me to join YT premium via Turkey now from the look of it.

      • It shouldn't be? I thought all I did was switch to my turkey iOS account, and subscribe from the YT app

  • +13

Why even pay? Plenty of free options on Android.

      • +14

Do those options have ad-free Youtube AND Music

        Yes.

for the same price as Spotify

Did you miss the word 'free'?

        ReVanced, search it up.

      • +2

I just download music for free…

        • +17

          The car is next.

          • +4

@DashCam AKA Rolts: then the handbag and a puppy, so I can put puppy in handbag on top of the car, all downloaded for free

          • +4

@DashCam AKA Rolts: "You wouldn't steal a car"

Bold of you to assume I'm not trash. I miss the old ads lol

            • @knk: I would steal a car if the owner still got to keep it and didn't even notice it had happened.

            • @knk: The ad wasn't very accurate as people are more than happy to download a free car.

              • @supersabroso: yeah it was a pretty terrible analogy wasn't it

    • The thing is I do most of youtube watching on TV. Any workaround for that? I use google chromcast and firestick on the other tv.

      • +13

SmartTube is your friend. Zero ads on TV.

      • +2

As above. You need to side load the APK file. They also block sponsorship content as well.

        • +3

and have also added thumbnail replacement so you don't have to look at stupid clickbait thumbnails.

          • @bamzero: You don't like me pulling a face and pointing at something?

          • @bamzero: By replacing them with thumbnails that are worse a majority of the time? No thanks.

      • +4

I have a Samsing TV, when an ad for Youtube comes up, there is an information icon, click it and say STOP ADVERTISEMENT, then an option will be to return to the video, it then skids all the adverts.

        • -1

What kind of Samsing TV is that that can skids all the ads?

  • uhh adblocker?

    • -2

      What about for Youtube Music?

      • -5

        Replies in Spotify

  • +18

Still ok for my India account

    • Same

    • Touch wood, me too!

      • I thought touch curry.

    • same here, fingers crossed

I've been using Ukraine for a while now, didn't require a local card and VPN services have Ukraine listed. Comes to about $4AUD per month.

    • +14

The bonus with a Ukrainian account is Youtube is unlikely to block you, seeing as so many Ukrainians have been dispersed around the world since early 2022.

        • +1

"woke". Lol. How old are you?

      • I was using Ukraine until Youtube cancelled me late last week. It was fun while it lasted I guess.

  • +33

Omg, you guys are paying for YouTube?

Revanced for phone, Brave web browser for PC and smart tube for your Android TV.

I literally cannot remember the last time I saw an ad on YouTube. SmartTube even blocks those… “and that reminds me of todays sponsor, are your tired of….” Self advertising segments in videos.

My last straw with YouTube was when they would slap an advertisement right in the middle of a video and totally ruining to continuity of it, making it borderline unwatchable.

    • +2

I literally cannot remember the last time I saw an ad on YouTube. SmartTube even blocks those… “and that reminds me of todays sponsor, are your tired of….” Self advertising segments in videos.

Revanced and Brave (or uBlock) don't block those self advertising segments though unfortunately.

      • +22

        sponsorblock

        • +2

          Will check it out. Thanks!

        • +1

          whoa!

      • Interesting, I use revanced and I think it does block the sponsor segments 🤔at least I haven't seen one for a while.

    • Imma have to look into smart tube. I'm so sick of 2 min unskippable ads every 5 minutes just because I wanna play stuff through the tv.
      Thanks

      • +3

i swear they upgraded the ads recently also.

so you can get 2 unskippable ads in a row now and i also get hit with surveys (which do you buy most from with 5 options coles, woolworths etc).

used to be you could skip both ads if you clicked skip, or worst case skip 1 and number 2 was unskippable but only sometimes.
I think some tech website also posted an article about this, something like "youtube is trialling new unskippable ad format".

        • +7

YouTube making the ads so egregious and obnoxious just further encourages people to use an ad blocker. If they weren't so in your face and annoying people wouldn't feel like they need one to use the site in an acceptable way. I reckon they're shooting themselves/the creators who rely on ad revenue in the foot

    • Can I use this on my Google home devices?

    • Brave no longer blocking youtube ads as of March 27, 2024
      did they fix brave?

      • +3

It's been blocking them for me. Get amongst it

    • +2

Been using Brave browser on Android and desktop. No ads or problems at all

    • Good tips. But I'm still not convinced myself to use my main account on those platforms. I was trying pihole and adguard before but still can't trust them with my everyday internet activities.

    YouTube Premium Crackdown. What’s Next?

    Try Youtube premium Tuvalu

  • +3

Use Ublock Origin on PC and Revanced or Newpipe on Android. Unfortunately I don't know of anything for ios.

    • best you can do on ios is use an adblocker or ad blocking DNS with YouTube web. But the website on mobile isn't very nice. Maybe there's some sort of app you can sideload?

    • Can someone link the ReVanced .apk? I always get scared looking for a legitimate link and end up not downloading anything because the sites look dodgy

    • Wipr does the trick for me. Available from the App Store on both Mac OS and iOS.

Won't work on the YouTube app though. You have to use the site on Safari.

  • +7

Thanks Google - will happily cancel if you expect me to pay full price for your trash.

    • +1

digging their grave piece by piece…

      • +3

there are plenty of consumers not tech savvy enough to avoid the adds.
        Google will survive.
        I'm fine with that.

        • They have been increasing the price and cracking down on adblocking tools harder recently. I'm not a fan of paying for any subscriptions until joining the geo deal club.

  • +26

Given the YT Premium subscription works across so many devices in our family (PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Androids, Apple TV, old iPads) with removing ads and allowing in-app downloads, I feel like I get decent value as I look outside my virtual window into downtown Gurugram.

    • +1

      $10/person/year for a family account.
      no brainer

      • -2

        $10/person/year for a family account.

Depends how many in your family.

        • 6 accounts for family account

      • +1

Is that for an Australian subscription?
        Currently its $65.98/person/year…

        • +6

I realised I may have been too subtle in my joke - Gurugram is in India.

        • Pakistan

      • I assume you are referring to using an Indian account paying that little?

        • Yes. I signed up when I was working in India and never changed my country since. No issues using my 28 degrees card.

        • -3

          Pakistan

            • @TopG: not a popular sentiment it seems

    • Same.

    • +3

If you got kids and you don't want them seeing ads then it's exceptional value.

      • instead teach them how to avoid ads through blockers :D

    • +2

      YouTube Gurugram Style.

  • What blocker do you use for your generic Panasonic TV? Thats the one that ruins my evenings.
