YouTube Premium - Overseas Payment Method Crackdown Discussion Megathread

Guys, I have been on Argentina and they found out.

I got this email. I can’t go to India as there are no VPN services and credit card doesn’t work. Which country do I go to next to get similar value for money like Argentina?

“ Your YouTube Premium membership was canceled because we believe the signup country of Argentina was inaccurate.”

Mod:
As this appears to be a hot topic as of Q4 2024 ( large numbers of users being emailed by YouTube that their Australian payment method is not being accepted. The emails being sent mention that "YouTube Premium memberships based in Country X require a form of payment issued in Country X.",

Hence all discussions of similar nature will be moved to this thread.

In the middle of this too… From what I've gathered

      1. Revanced
      2. Turkey gift card via Turkey app store
      3. VPN to other country that yt hasn't catch on to (ie. kazakhstan) but pay around $15 for a family plan.
    • Google has an Indian CEO. He is a very nice chap. But hey they have more users in his home country.

Huh? I heard he was a Cowboy ?

Also got the email for my Turkish YTP subscription this morning. I'd seen the writing on the wall and started using Smartube on TV (and have been using adblock and sponsorblock on desktop since forever). Only issue iOS. I guess I'll try looking uYou+ or whatever it's called.

  • Yep same for you turkey YouTube this morning

    • +1

      Same for Argentina

Anyone know if Revolut would work? Or any other digital Visa/ Mastercards?

      • My Wise card was activated in Turkey (accidentally had the VPN on when signing up), and the system accepted it when it asked for a different payment method.

They haven't deducted a payment yet, will be later this month, but fingers crossed it does the trick

        • Please report back op.

          • @kekw: Running the first card numbers through a BIN lookup shows as AU, so I'm not holding up hopes that it works long-term

            • @spackbace: 57.99 try just taken from my wise card as payment

              • @spackbace: Thanks for reporting back. I've opted to go with Revanced since.

Saw a guide via Samsung phone Link to Reddit for anyone still looking!

      • same, opened a Bankwest transaction account and they accepted the new payment method … all of my other cards didn't work.

    • I tested adding a backup payment method for YouTube by adding a new credit card, which was accepted. I then switched the primary payment to the backup method, and that was also accepted.

Not sure if this will actually keep the account active—guess I'll find out at the end of the month. Emails have indicated they’d cancel it after November 30th.

      • Have just attempted this same method after getting an email this morning re my Argentinian subscription. Fingers crossed 🤞

  • +3

we need someone to take one for the team and migrate to either India, turkey or argentina.
then open a credit card and be the middle man for subscription. make a killing i tell ya!

Got the email today. RIP. Time to pay $17 instead of $2. :(

  • What's the best option for YouTube Music through a laptop? Old man only uses that but my account will be cancelled early December.

I am aware of phone apps but no idea about laptop.
Does YTM work on a laptop with adblock?

  • Moved to Romania last month -> new plan has yet to start and got an email today about price increase. Nice

    • I got the same email for Turkey + an email a few days before that saying sort your shit with a new card from our country

    • Romainia cheaper than aus? Whats a free romainian vpn?

  • Family plan gone from 59.99 TRY in Feb 2023 to 159.99 now. That's quite the increase in under 2 years!

  • +1

I've got the "upgrade your form of payment" for Argentina email.

So….Can I move to Romania or india now ? Or am I on YT's crap list forever?

    Nord VPN, family plan

    • Yeah I'm too cautious to risk my main account again. Might create a new YT account and have a crack with some of the above methods.

  • So I just got the email regarding my Ukrainian YouTube Premium account.

I do however have a Ukrainian passport (dual citizen) but would need to physically travel to Ukraine to get a new debit card as my old one has expired.

Given there is a war on in Ukraine, can I just send them a copy of my passport instead?

  • +1

Damn after using YT Turkey for over five years, I got the email today.
Has anyone figured out how to sort this out….apart from paying full $$ to YT here in Aus?!

    Hi XXXXX,

    Thanks,

  • I wonder if adding Turkish credit to my Google Play account would resolve this

  • Does the Turkish Apple ID and Turkish Apple gift card credit loop still work?

I just got the email too. My service will be cut off 5/12/24.

  • Anyone using the iTunes with around get the local payment email? How does YouTube know where the payment is from if it is only iTunes credit?

  • Damn - I got the email this morning about my Indian premium being cancelled if I don’t update my payment details with an Indian card. Had this subscription for like 5 plus years.

Watching videos through my partner’s free ad supported account makes me want to vomit. I’ll probably just use YouTube less frequently.

  • Merged from YouTube Premium Caught Me Using Phlipines Account in Aus

They sent me an email saying they gona cancel my sub from philipines. What do I do? Is there other options that doesnt involve paying full price? Im on a philipines family plan.

    • +2

Is there other options that doesnt involve paying full price?

      Move to Philipines?

    • nah cant get around it easily anymore same for india users (like myself)
just cancelled and re-signed at $32 something - i dont mind, i 100% get the value out of it .

      • Isnt family plan just $24? How come 32.

        • +1

its been 32.99 for like a year now since the price hike

(this is australia youtube premium im talking about)

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Damn, thats crazy

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Not dissing your own financial choice, but $33 per month seems crazy steep. That’s like $400 a year.

            • @Reticent: Considering the amount of use I get out of it, it’s quite reasonable. I guess if I really was hard up for cashflow I’d prob sell off 2 slots.

Keeps my misso, my parents/ in laws, and my kids happy. Just works, no mucking around.

Most devices are iOS/ running YouTube from tv or chrome cast, again easier/ saves my sanity to just go legit

      • Sadly I think I'll end up paying the $33 a month as well given how much we use it for vids + music + kids (plus a share in to my parents for Youtube music on their TV). Pretty hefty jump from my current $6 a month.

        • +1

          Kazakhstan is ~$15 per month.

          • @CodeXD: Surely they just run the same scan over accounts and it happens again? Or existing account already tagged to Aus.

            • +1

@Tock: I reckon they only keep track of the cheapest 10 or so places that people are likely to VPN to, like India, Pakistan, Turkey, Argentina, Mexico etc

The others google hasn't put a restriction on what card can be used to pay, so it does not need to originate from the same country.

        • 33 a month is a small price to pay for kids/the Misso/ the in laws to not be on ya about YouTube work arounds playing up.

I used to have ad blocker on my work pc for YouTube as well and YouTube managed to detect and slow down videos.

I mainly use it on iOS devices so again, easier.

    • +1

There are so many options for adfree YouTube that are free. Why even have an overseas account to start with*?

      *Apple users need not apply

      • Cos we use our youtube app on the phone. I think these ad free options are for browser viewing.

        • If that's what you want to think then that is up to you.

          • @MS Paint: What about free YT music alternative?

  • Got the same email, gg nore.

I'm going to try pausing my membership until after the cut off date and see if that does anything.

  • Got the email last month for my Pakistan subscription, I changed the card over and was debited again on the 20th of November. Today I received an email saying my subscription would not renew on the 20th of December as I need a Pakistan payment method. Turned on the VPN and went through my normal method, when I got to renew, I got an error message saying that YT cannot verify my country. I think my account has been flagged when I have my Pakistan VPN on

    • YT cannot verify my country

This means YT knows you are using VPN

      • no. they are checking the credit card.

YouTube Premium memberships based in Turkey require a form of payment issued in Turkey.

        • +2

I don't think that is the case. I think there are certain countries that have been flagged as suspicious. For example, when connected to VPN for the following countries, I was tagged as not being able to verify your country

          Pakistan
          India
          Romania
          Philippines
          Indonesia

When I connected to Kazakhstan, I was able to renew my membership no problems.

    • +2

Had similar, switched payment to Wise and it processed 1 payment, but today received the email to say it wouldn't renew

I swear this second email is more blunt lol

Your YouTube Premium membership will not renew automatically and you’ll lose your YouTube Premium membership benefits on Dec 14, 2024. YouTube Premium memberships based in Turkey require a form of payment issued in Turkey.

  • +1
