      • Ive never had an issue.
If they take money out, the money comes back in within a week. I also benefit as if i use a credit card, it gets refunded to bank account so i get the point, also good to meet min spend requirement for credit card points.
If i use discounted coles mastercards, then i profit as they deposit back to bank account. Its a win for me.

        • Ive never had an issue

Never? Wow, good on you but I find that difficult to believe.

The complaint statistics very clearly show how bad Bupa, in particular, is.

If they take money out, the money comes back in within a week.

Within a week you say? I'm waiting 11 days so far for Bupa to return funds it should never have debited.

I also benefit as if i use a credit card, it gets refunded to bank account so i get the point, also good to meet min spend requirement for credit card points.

That all sounds very niche, specific to your circumstances. Also, I note that keeping track of prepaid cards can be hard work.

I think most people would prefer that their bank account is not erroneously debited in the first place.

          • @YesPleaseThankYou:

Never? Wow, good on you but I find that difficult to believe.

            You better believe it.
I churn 6 to 8 times a year for last 5 years, never had an issue

The only issues i have faced is the delay in adding the free months to my account for some funds, but quickly resolved by an email to customer care

Also, I note that keeping track of prepaid cards can be hard work.

            Sucks to be you then.
All my spend is via discounted prepaid cards. Ive spend over 30k in last 12 months via prepaid cards. Saved aprox 8% thats in my pocket.

And have profited between 1 to 2.5k per year via churning PHI with a combination of gift cards, free weeks, give back schemes and optical/gym membership claims etc

My churn with people care last year i got $100 GC, 6 free weeks, $250 optical, $150 via referral, $500 give back scheme and i was only with them for 10 weeks.

            • @easternculture:

              Sucks to be you then

I'm not sure what this is a reference to. I didn't say that I had any difficulty with gift cards.

There are many reported stories of people struggling to properly track their spend on prepaid gift cards. In fact, its what the card issuers rely on.

Ive spend over 30k in last 12 months via prepaid cards

Perhaps this explains why you're not concerned about the funds taking extra money from your accounts. You seem to have a surplus of funds. Good on you.

  • I was gonna switch to Queensland Health Fund for their 6 weeks free then rang up BUPA to see what they can do- offered me 12% discount vs 4% on "corporate plan" for 12 months. Queensland Health Fund was going to be about $15 more/month after 6 weeks free so decided to stay with BUPA.

    • +1

I was gonna switch to Queensland Health Fund for their 6 weeks free

The QCHF offer represents a 100% discount for the relevant period.

rang up BUPA to see what they can do- offered me 12% discount vs 4% on "corporate plan" for 12 months

So, you went for a 12% discount. OK.

Queensland Health Fund was going to be about $15 more/month after 6 weeks free

The idea of churning is that you don't stay with any one fund. Instead, you follow the offers.

As I have previously pointed out, following the 'pay 1 month, get 6 weeks free' offers results in a discount of approximately 58%.

      decided to stay with BUPA.

If you're not interested in churning, then please do enjoy your 12%. It's the maximum allowed under law.

      • +1

As I have previously pointed out, following the 'pay 1 month, get 6 weeks free' offers results in a discount of approximately 58%.

I believe this calc applies if you churn out specifically once the 6-weeks free period is up; so in theory you can max out discount to approx 58% but on condition you have another provider with "X weeks free" offer at the time?

I've only recently started churning with utilities, so I should attempt this next otherwise just paying lazy tax.

        • +1

Correct. There's usually at least 1 insurer offering this at any one time. If there isn't, there are other offers that come close in terms of percentage discount.

I've only recently started churning with utilities

Yes, same. Have had (almost) free electricity since the start of the year with all the credit offers.

so I should attempt this next otherwise just paying lazy tax

          Indeed!

          • @YesPleaseThankYou: I havent paid electricity for close to 2 years and about 50% gas bill only. Infact i may have profited from electricity and broke even with gas spend. The reason why i still dont have solar

For PHI last few ones was 6 weeks free after one month + gift card, 6 weeks free Queensland Country offer, 6 weeks free after one month + $200 GC via compare the market and then this bupa offer starting 10 May. So as you can see approx 4 months paid for a whole year plus the additional incentives (gift cards, 2 x $350 optical at change of limit renewal and gym membership paid twice amoung others)

So signed up to Bupa last week. Gave them a week before it starts…weeks has past..heard nothing.

    Called Bupa…60 minute wait.

Called back later..they said it can take 5 days…and even if it still isn't done, they will get to it eventually. BUT…they will back date payment!

So I might not receive an inital letter of commencement or whatever it is till next week….but they will still charge me from last week. Is this right…dodgy as!

She said I can still go and get a massage etc, and make a claim before it is processed (seems massively risky…and wrong)?

    Not even a Bupa member yet…and I already hate them… 100% a churn n burn.

  • Also, the Shopback $680 back (with 6 weeks free) seems a better deal?

    • CB amount depends on annual premium

      • Ahhh…the ole "up to"

  • +1

Sign up and start policy on 30 March but haven't receive reward points yet. How long to receive those rewards points?

    • +2

I was told after the second payment. So, the payment after the weeks free period.

    • +1

From an email I received from Woolworths Everyday Rewards 5 days after sign up:

congrats on putting your health in good hands!
Now that we've confirmed your policy details, you're on your way to exciting rewards.
Get ready for your Everyday Rewards points
All you need to do is sit tight. Points will land straight in your Everyday Rewards balance around 60 days after your policy start date+ (as long as you maintain your policy).

      • Lucky you, I still heard nothing until today.

      • I never even received an email from everyday rewards. Joined through bupa, but the everyday rewards deal, added my everyday rewards number and the code, nothing in the bupa email, so i added my bupa details manually as well in the everyday rewards app, rang bupa to make sure it was on there as well. Cancelled just as the 10 weeks was up before the next payment came out, but no points yet. Others have been told it can be around 90 days to get the points. We'll see. Some already have theirs and they joined after me and others, esp ones that cancelled after the 60 days

  • How bad is Bupa to call!! Used the call back service twice, drops out after you press 1 twice!!

Just wondering the best way to get a pair of Oakley RX prescription sunglasses?

Any tips (where to get the vision test, and where to buy them)? Bupa Optical is a free eye test, but they want $550 for the glasses (entry level lenses).

Looking at Vision Direct $269 for the same thing.

Looks like I have $250 cover with Wellness extras.

Sorry @easternculture … this seems to be in your wheelhouse?

    • +1

Make sure vision direct have a provide number and bill you correctly with item number and you can claim online via bupa app.

All eye tests are free as long as you have a Medicare card. I do mine at specsavers

      • Okee dokes… Anyone else other vision direct you recommend?

Did Specs savers give you your prescription details to take away? Need to upload into Vision direct number etc.

        • +1

Yes they give you a printout of prescription

          • @easternculture: Just got off Phone to Bupa..asked about provider numbers etc..she said it doesn't matter where I get them from, they are just processed (refunded back to my new with the submission of an invoice) as a Bupa preferred partner ($139 for frames/ $73 for lenses) or non Bupa preferred ($115 / $49.50 lenses). I asked her about provider numbers…she says it doesn't matter..just non Bupa have a lesser claim amount…but I bet you are right over her (I'll try and work out the provider number bit).

Also, how did you get your compound pharmacy meds claimed. She said all compound medications aren't claimable? Has to be a listed TGA approved medication?

  • I didn't notice it said 60 days of payments must be made by 'direct debit' to be eligible for the 75000 bonus edr points.
My 1st payment was charged to my credit card at sign up and again 30 days later. It has not been 60 days since joining yet, but will I be ineligible for the bonus edr points due to paying via credit card?

    • Why didn’t you get the free 6 weeks?

      • I got the 6 weeks free but still got charged a “top up” payment after 30 days(along with the first 30 day membership upon signup). Shouldn’t be any more payments before 60 days is up though.

        • +2

When I rang to check, they advised I got the 6 weeks free. Same as 'i like freestuff' at the top up payment after 30 days.

          • +1

@Nat000: Thought the way that was done was pretty poor. Random email saying we will be charging you a top up payment soon.

At least tell me when and and how much 🙄

  • Do you think I'll receive the edr points even though i paid via credit card, not direct debit ?

    • +1

      Payment method shouldn’t matter

      • I noticed it says

        1. Eligible Customer

        To be an Eligible Customer for this Offer from Bupa HI Pty Ltd (Bupa) and Woolworths Group Limited (Woolworths) (the Everyday Rewards Offer), you must be;

C take out an Eligible Bupa Health Insurance Policy between 14/03/2024 and 10/04/2024 and commence your policy by 10/05/2024, maintain this policy and make all required payments for 60 days by direct debit.

    • Direct debit via credit card

      • That will do for me then. Thanks

    • That's dodgy, thanks for calling this out. I've just set up my direct debit as they only took the first payment when I signed up.

Just got charged a $146 top up, my monthly payment is $222, nearly an extra payment , is that even legal to charge a random top up payment without disclosing on sign up?

    • it will be a split month thing (ie, your payments are about half way through the month). Any over payments should get refunded if/ when you move away.

I only just got notification that my policy is now active (took just over 2 weeks)…but they still take payment dating back when I requested it to come across, not from when they finally processed it. T&Cs say it may take up to 5 business days to process…it took 11….That's dodgy in my eyes.

      • Was it the ‘catch up’ payment thing for the gap after the 6 weeks free period? So if we cancel the policy during the 6 weeks free period, can we get it refunded?

        • Yes it was the gap payment , not sure about the refund

    • I got Bupa to refund this payment so-called catch-up payment.

In my view, I have joined Bupa for pay 1 month get 6 weeks free. After the first month, the next payment should be after the 6 weeks.

The way Bupa does it, if you did not intend to stay beyond the 6 weeks free, you will end up paying unnecessarily for extra days.

Sure, Bupa is required to provide a refund for any excess premium paid, but the firm seems so disorganised, it is anyone's guess whether you would ever receive a refund (if you do not request one).

  • Woah! be careful when you transfer out. Bupa just cancelled my new policy with HBF and tried to transfer me back without my consent!!!

HBF told me this happens with them all the time.

Please jump on the AFCA website and report them. Takes 5 mins. This is not acceptable.

It is not AFCA; it is the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman (PHIO).

Just had my first Bupa dental appointment..and what a $hit show.

When I signed up to Bupa it said free 6 month dental check up and clean. Bupa rep pointed me towards an approved provider and sent me the find a provider link. Said as a Bupa member, there will be no charge. Called up, booked..done. Don't have my physical card yet (they said it will take 5 Business days…it's only been 12..still not here). But from my email, I had my member number and a 16 digit card number.

Went in, had my teeth done. All good " no charge today"…just need to scan your Bupa barcode… Huh?? Showed her the blue card graphic they sent me. Nup, can't use it.

Said I can pay, and get reimbursed later…BUT..I had no way to pay, and brought my 3yr old with me as well (so she could see Dentist are nothing to fear etc).

Did a request call back from Bupa. Little champion waited with me for another 20 mins. Said to login and generate a barcode.

So I enter log info, it sends a factor 2 code to my email. I enter the factor 2. It says 'the email doesn't exist"…yet it just sent me a factor 2 code.

I said, just generate whatever the barcode is and send it to me. She sends me a link to a website that is jumbled and doesnt scroll. My phone is an Oppo A72 running Android 11 and Chrome…. Really Bupa.

I put it in desktop mode… There is an option to get a code sent via SMS..I do this…it just sends the login link that doesn't work.

She then asks for the treatment codes I had done. No idea why? But the ladies do some to and fro… give her the numbers..15 more mins wasted…and yep it's the free covered product.. but can't do anything because I don't have the barcode.

My little one has now been sitting there for an hr, plus the check up hygienist session (she loved the first but, now not happy).

Bupa Muppet goes back to "just pay ", I reiterate I don't have a payment method (have a debit card on Google pay with $50 on it…that's it).

Dentist says there is a Bupa "shop" upstairs..maybe 100m.away. I asked Bupa support if someone can come down and sort this out..we can't go anywhere..nup.

After 2 hrs (of my little one sitting there and upset…which makes a parent want to disembowel someone..I was on the brink on snapping)..my partner drove 1hr down to Bupa to get it sorted. Came in and got it scanned…something to do with the back end set up.

I am filthy with the process, and how Bupa handled it. I asked to submit a formal complaint..and she asked for evidence that someone from Bupa said I can go and get my teeth done.. thankfully I recorded that conversation on my phone..date, time and length of call. 2 calls in fact..both saying "good.to.go" .. apparently someone will call me in 23 days.. I can't wait to use as much as I can and leave.

  • Anyone know how to get the Bupa " virtual card " ..thing on to Google wallet without going through the app (it keeps throwing fail messages)?
If it helps, my partner has it on her phone. Can she simply send it across to my phone? Both running Android 11.
    Cheers

Who to churn to next? Got the 6 weeks free, just waiting for my EDR points to be applied.

    • Too early for me to be considering that.

However, I might advise Bupa of the cancellation date of my policy to prevent any further direct debits.

      • How do you advise cancellation, do we need to call them? Thanks!

        • +1

Always wise to follow fund processes and follow-up with an email (if they don't immediately confirm the cancellation in writing). See https://www.bupa.com.au/help/membership/changes/cancel-membe…

Note, however, under Bupa Fund Rule C.7.1:

Subject to this Rule C7, the Policy Holder may cancel a Policy by advising us in writing or as otherwise agreed by us …

          Source: https://www.bupa.com.au/-/media/dotcom/files/pdfs/bupa-fund-…

The issue with Bupa and just using email is that Bupa seems to have a long queue of emails to answer. That is, you may not receive a timely response.

In writing also means via chat. I think you can use WhatsApp or Apple Messages for Business (I recently used Messages for Business to contact Bupa).

          • @YesPleaseThankYou: Got an email address for Bupa?

I just submitted a complaint to the PHIO, as BUPA are not contactable.

Recorded my calls (which simply disconnect every time at the 'push 1' part.

When I did get through, they 'put me through' ..which hangs up.

As for third party contact methods…I don't have an iPhone..and I'm not giving out my personal information via third party apps.

I'm thinking to churn to Medibank. Their 6 weeks free offer and up to $500 in gift cards is back.

Anyone received the EDR points yet?

    • +1

      Haven't even received a f@#n card yet!

      I'm sensing 2000 AFCA reports incoming…

      • +3

It's not AFCA, it's the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman ('PHIO').

I think even the PHIO has a backlog at the moment. I wonder if that is related to what appears to be mismanagement by Bupa of recent promotions.

Bupa seems quick to sign you up and direct debut your account then slow on everything else.

        • I thought AFCA was all banking and insurance? Learn something new every day.
The fact there is a PHIO is pretty sad…ten strikes..remove license…
It is a a busy teacher that doesn't give consequences.
I'll lodge with both to be sure

          • @tunzafun001: You don't have to lodge both, you just have to read the guidance provided:

AFCA does not consider private health insurance. The Private Health Insurance Ombudsman (PHIO) considers these complaints

            Source: https://www.afca.org.au/make-a-complaint/insurance

Edit: In my post above, 'direct debut' should, of course, have been 'direct debit'. (I am unable to edit it now.)

            • @YesPleaseThankYou: I was being a bit tongue in cheek with reporting to both …but thanks for this info. Saved me waiting around for a few weeks and then starting again.

Called today, EDR points applied 3 months after joining date.

      • So do we need to keep our coverage for the 3months or can we cancel earlier?

      • "in" the third month..as per t&Cs.

So pay for month 1, month 2 and a couple of weeks into month 3 is free ..

Got told the same via chat so if joined 15/3, points will be applied around 15/6… So points will only land in account after churn looks like.

        • ok, good to know. Last year apparently they were applied around day 70 after joining, so now it is approx day 90

  • I joined BUPA last year when they had the same deal.

It felt so good going to woolies and use the rewards dollars when shopping.

2 free dental clean and scale every year.

T&C said hold 60 days so they should honour it

Guys, still no points here too, and it's been about 70 days for me since my policy started. I might have to cancel my policy first before I receive the points as my 6 free weeks is almost up. Fortunately, I haven't had any major issues with Bupa, but from reading some of the comments, I don't really want to stay with them for any longer than I have to.
