Finally some decent points on CC's. Cheers for posting

  • +34

As always, keep this in mind
All other Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the past 18 months are ineligible for this offer.

    • +1

does it count if i hold an old amex, and my misso has a supplementary card? or is she excluded too?

Also been thinking of closing my old amex and getting into cc churning..but what do people usually use to get around the 18 month wait time?

      • +3

Supplimentary doesn't count. She will be okay as long as she hasn't been a primary holder in the last 18 months

      • I'm tempted to do the same too but don't really want to miss out the offers (though it sucks recently). I guess you just try churning other cards in the mean time.

        • +1

yeah been literally months since any good deals.

i dont have any need for any more sony gear or microsoft gear…and those two are usually the only decent ones so I figure I am not missing out anything.
amex definitely has zero interest in customer retention.

the only other thing holding me back is a whole big ass stack of direct debits tied to my amex, that will be a royal pain in the ass to swap.

          • +2

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Keep a list of all your autodebits, it makes churning easy. It takes an hour max to change your autodebits over to a new CC.

            • @archkesha: yeah just off the top of my head there is 15 auto debits I know definitely need changing…the rest I will probably just have to do as they generate a declined payment notice haha

      • +4

cancel the card, keep a look out for other qff cc's posted here and apply, meet the min spend for bonus points then cancel.

Rinse and repeat once the 18 month period is over.

    • How does this work if I have a corporate card through my workplace? I assume that means I am a current card holder?

      • +4

I have one through business and that is counted as current card holder.

        • Thanks.. that's a shame!

      • +5

I believe that Corporate cards as in you are just an employee and you use it for travel expenses, client events etc is different to you having a business card where you are the operator of the business.

I have had non Amex Corporate credit cards for work expenses in my last few roles but because the bill is issued to my employer, I didn't have any credit checks run on me personally and it doesn't show up in my credit checks when I apply for churn cards.

IIRC Corporate card means you are eligible, business card means you are not.

I would agree with this. I've had a Corp AMEX and have been able to take up these offers in the past. The work address was used instead of my own. My last personal AMEX closed almost 18 months ago so eligible at the end of Jan. There's also the Virgin Velocity equivilent if anyone missed it - https://flighthacks.com.au/amex-velocity-platinum-guide/ Not sure if applying for both at the same time will succeed in being eligible for both.

      • +5

I've had a work Amex previously and gotten this card with no issues so it should be ok unless things have somehow changed in the last few years.

        • Was your name on the corporate Amex? My card is:

          First Last
          Company Pty Ltd

          • +1

@Galvatron: Yeah, my name on the corp amex but no company name. It's the usual green corporate amex cards.

      • +1

Hey - I have a corporate card through my work and I was able to get the bonus points. Hope that helps.

    • In Hong Kong, if you hold your card for longer than 18 months, you are still considered eligible for the new card benefits.

    • Do Amex ever wave the 18month wait if you have had an existing card with them for a while??

  • +9

That’s $450 qantas travel credit, must be used on qantas flights only

    • Can this credit be used in conjunction to the Qantas points, as in points + pay? If then it is okay as normally if you book classic flights with points you still need to pay for the taxes.

      • +12

I don't think so. Pretty sure the flight has to be booked through the american express travel website, where using Qantas points isn't an option.

      • +2

No…it can only be used for Amex travel.

        • If so, can't it be used for other things like car rental and accommodation?

          • +2

@wildstone: Qantas American Express Ultimate Primary Card Members are eligible for an annual $450 Qantas Travel Credit, subject to the full Qantas Travel Credit Terms and Conditions at amex.com.au/qantasultimate-travelcreditterms. The Qantas Travel Credit can be redeemed through American Express Travel Online on a single eligible travel booking for Qantas Flights (i.e. a QF flight number on your ticket) by selecting the Qantas Travel Credit when you checkout. All Qantas Flight travel is subject to Qantas Conditions of Carriage. To redeem the Travel Credit, the full value of the Travel Credit (or more) must be charged to the eligible Primary Card. The Qantas Travel Credit can be used for 365 days from the benefit anniversary date and cannot be used past the expiration date. To check the expiration date of your Qantas Travel Credit if you have not already redeemed it, please visit americanexpress.com.au/travel; log in and click ‘Travel Credit’. If your booking is cancelled, and your Qantas Travel Credit has already been used and associated statement credit applied to your account, you will forfeit your annual Qantas Travel Credit benefit and American Express may reverse the statement credits issued. You need to be able to spend on the Card to access the Qantas Travel Credit benefit and it should be credited to your Card Account within 3 business days but may take up to 30 days. Your account must be in good standing and you must have paid the annual fee and minimum payment by the due date. If you cancel your Card, change your rewards program or Card type, you will no longer be eligible for the Qantas Travel Credit.

            • @Heybargain: Wow…. thanks guys for the inputs.

Looks like it is designed specifically to not provide you any value. Since it has to be more $450, are you able to book 2 tickets or a return ticket to use it?

            • @Heybargain: When it says The Qantas Travel Credit can be used for 365 days from the benefit anniversary date, Can we redeem it on first year or does it have to be the second year?

          • +3

@wildstone: No, only Qantas flights. And we used to be able to redeem for flights that cost less than $450, now an additional requirement is the flight you're booking has to be more than $450.

            • +1

@firestint: it also sucks since they sometimes dont seem to be the most competitive pricing either since it done with their internal site

              • @alebox: Yes agreed, from my own experience using this previously, the prices were the same if booked directly with Qantas but only 2 out of 5 or 6 options in terms of flight time available on AMEX portal.

                • @firestint: Yes this has been my biggest annoyance - they don't provide access to all flights.

            • @firestint: I book one >$450 return flight on the last day of my membership year and my companion's on the first day of the next year

            • +1

@firestint: this is fine for us Perth people, everything costs more than $450 here….

    • +4

Worst thing is your flight can't be under $450.

      • -1

Qantas prices are a rip off merchant, most are over $450 anyway

    • +4

This! I wish someone pointed this to me out before i signed up. Now I'm stuck with this useless travel credit that doesn't actually offset the annual fee. It's a really bs and useless part of the offer unless you know you are getting a qantas flight over $450 soon.

      • Other cards with high Qantas point earn rates offer nothing much of value to offset their similarly steep fees.

        • At least there’s a chance to get the annual fee refunded. Not chance of that with the AMEX

      • you dont travel overseas or further distance?

I don't know if you are 'stuck' with the credit lol

    • I wonder even if you apply through Amex Travel, does the flights purchased count towards the Status Credits + Flights on your QFF profile?

      • Yes, flights booked via the Amex system are still associated with your QFF number so you will earn points, status, and have the flight itinerary etc in the Qantas app

    • +5

I was able to use it against a return Qantas flight and hotel room.

I think it was like $300 for the Qantas flights, then $550 for hotel. So that used up the $450 credit, and I paid the $250 balance on my Amex card.

The person at Amex making the booking wasn't sure I was allowed to do this, but she put me on hold and spoke to her supervisor and came back to my call within a couple of minutes saying it was fine.

      • Good to know, thanks.

      • Just interested. Did you do this in 2023, while the bee system is in place that they refund the credit to your card after booking? For flight+ hotel, as wanting to do something similar.

    • I cancelled my card recently due to this change in policy. Return flights Mel<>syd are $320 which appears to be a standard price until dynamic pricing kicks in closer to the time of travel, even then $420 is the norm unless it is exceptionally high demand- so this credit can’t be used for that, and travelling beyond Sydney is 600+ return and cheaper on other airlines or travel sites. It’s a bit useless the Travel Credit now that it is Qantas only making the whole value prop of the Amex card moot.

  • +21

Always found it so hard to use the Qantas travel credit. Going to pass on this one and get the Velocity one instead

    • is it 100k points for velocity one too?

    • I was thinking of applying for this, whats so hard about it? From what I've read in the terms I just book a QF flight through the Amex portal and apply the credit at the end? Or am I missing something?

      • What you've listed is the process on how to book using the travel credit.

        • Great, thanks. Looks like the other user has had issues based on QF pricing vs other airlines, rather than the Amex booking process.

    • +1

Can you share why it has been difficult to use the Qantas travel credit vs Velocity?

      • +9

Sorry I realised I should have clarified. The process of redeeming the travel credit is straight forward however I always found Qantas prices to be significantly higher than the competition for domestic and international, so couldn't justify using the travel credit until the last hour where I just randomly booked a domestic flight, just for the sake of it not going to waste. YMMV however

        • Exactly my experience too. The qantas restricted travel credit is next to useless

    • How so? Never had issues using the credit. Where do u normally travel to?

      • +3

I have 2 examples from the top of my head.
        1. I wanted to use it for a flight to Europe, Qantas was more expensive than Singapore or Qatar by $600, so I couldn't justify using the credit obviously
        2. I also tried for a domestic flight to Cairns, and found Qantas more expensive than Virgin by $250.
This was after weeks of looking up flights daily but Qantas was always more expensive.
I gave up in the end and booked a return melbourne flight for $460 a few days before the credit expired (Virgin was cheaper again by $100-150), but booked it via amex so it wouldn't go to waste.
So personally, I wouldn't want to go through this again but like I said YMMV and it may be different this year

        • +4

This echoes my experience.. whilst it may sound like you get the card for 'free', you end up paying more for Qantas flights you want, or choosing them over another cheaper carrier just to use the damn thing up

          • @roadeh: Similar with Qantas sale fares..they take a few days to be available via amex portal..but if you have a specific flight that's cheaper on Qantas site, you can usually match/access via chat.

    • How was it hard to use the credit?
You can use it against any Qantas flight and they are the same price through AMEX Travel as hey are through Qantas.com - so plenty of choice

  • +4

The statement "additional 25K Qantas points if you keep card open for second year" is not correct - please edit

    • fixed, thank you!

  • Where do we get the referral links?

    • +2

      Nevermind worker it out lol

  • +4

Fit all the criteria but kept getting rejected when I applied for this card last year and hurt my credit score, meanwhile a friend on almost identical income got immediately accepted. Very frustrating because they always seem to have the best offers.

    • +2

Identical income doesn't mean identical loan serviceability.

They also consider your debts and spending habits (for example If they see that you spend a lot on gambling they may be inclined to reject you), plus a multitude of other factors.

Having said that, have you tried calling them to reconsider? I got rejected years ago when there was the Westpac + Amex card deal. My Westpac got approved but Amex rejected my application. I called Amex asking why and then they said it was approved without providing any reasoning. My guess is that their system just automatically flagged me and rejected my application without proper consideration

  • +1

Good but a few issues I can see.
1: It's Am Ex. So many places don't except this card and if they do the card fee rate are high compare to Visa/Master.
2: I cannot see it but there is no oversea fee free conversion transaction? If this is the case no point using oversea.
3: The Lounge access is no good for Adelaide people only available in Mel and Syd.

This all I can thing off for now.

    • Just buy prepaid visa or mastercard and load them on google pay or apple pay. Still need to pay some fees upfront when purchasing the gift cards but you can find 0 fee deals from time to time. This way you can easily meet the spending requirement

    • +1
      1. Don't use it at those places. Plenty of options to use Amex without a higher fee.
      2. Yes, don't use it overseas. Has a foreign transaction fee.
      3. Qantas has a lounge in Adelaide.
      • Isn't the lounge access for Amex lounges which are different to QF lounges?

        • It comes with 2x passes for each type of lounge.

          • @vetopower: True. It's been a while since I've held this card.

          • +1

            @vetopower: Amex lounge is standard.
Keep in mind you are eligible to receive two Qantas Club Lounge Invitations each anniversary year of your Card Membership only after purchasing selected Qantas products and services using your Qantas American Express Ultimate Card.

    • Was wondering about pt1. Imo more places accept it than they used to, it I haven’t had Amex for a few years
In the market for a new Qantas CC, have stuck with the same one for 6 years ffs so dumb

    • You can add amex now to PayPal which has much lower/no fees

  • +7

I will never get rid of this card, Two companies made it very difficult to return some faulty products over the past 2 years and with evidence AMEX ruled in my favor! Love this card to death!

    • +3

Agree - AMEX are pretty damn good as far as financial providers go!

    • +2

Agree, I've churned a lot of CCs and Amex application and customer service I've found is 2nd to none. And the gap isnt even close to any other bank. Heck, I'd even closed my account and they chased and refunded a travel credit for me.

Worst thing is the 18 mth wait to get back with them!

    • Agree, Amex offers supreme customer service and rewards member loyalty/longevity

  • The American Express Qantas Business Rewards Card is 15,000 vs 10,000 on personal but no $450 travel credit. Which one do you think is more beneficial personal or business?

    • Not sure if you can apply for a business card without an ABN/a business?

      • Yeah I have one. Looks to be a better deal for business use with 500,000 point cap before a reduction vs 100,000 on personal card.

        • Where does it say there's a 100,000 cap for personal? I checked T&C's and it seems to say no cap.

        • +1

I have an ABN but what if you don't use the card for business purposes? What happens then?

  • -2

Do they refund the annual fee proportionately if we close as soon as we get the points?

    • +3

No, AmEx don't do pro-rata refunds. This is not a card I'd consider as a churn and burn card. If this card is appropriate for your situation I'd argue the inclusions would reasonably offset the annual fee so this is probably a long term hold card.

      • +3

Why not? You're basically giving up 100k points every 2 years, as well as 2 lounge invitations. That's giving up $1100 for no reason - and on top of that you will typically pay extra using Amex so it's not like it's a major convenience.

The $450 credit vs. annual fee is a pain in the ass, so not really neutral in my view either.

    • +1

      No.

  • Awesome, thanks OP! Have been holding out for an AMEX card with bonus points!

  • -1

There's also bonus 275k rewards points for amex platinum card through referral link, but I'm in the process of getting a home loan, will applying affect my loan and credit?

    • +8

Get your home loan approved first and then apply for this.

      • I'm worried that when I settle my home, that bonus offer expires…Want to get any card bonus offer for buying furniture and stuff

        • +7

Not worth risking your home loan application for a credit card bonus…

          • @DevlicK: I will wait when the loan process is done, hopefully there will be other good offers.
I did check with broker just now and he said ok to apply but I will wait
TBH the loan is because I want flexibility of my savings

          • +1

            @DevlicK: True Ozbargainer style

    • yes…but once you have loan approved then you can apply i guess

    • Oh can you provide the link to this offer? The one I saw here: https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/the-platinum… is just 150k points

      • Available via referral. Click one of the OZB referrals links above.

        • I only see 200k points when clicking through the referral link. Where are you seeing 275?

          • -1

@hakkenuh: I refreshed the link I got and it's still showing 275k, though I won't apply at the moment.
I got it from other social media, not from ozbargain
