      • hit the referral link but its only showing 200k points now.

        • its very odd, sometimes when i click it shows 225k points and other times 200k points

  • Is there a way to check when you last cancelled the Amex card?

    • +10

The spreadsheet I meticulously keep to know when my credit card churn exclusion periods are up!

      • Just curious, how do you count the dates? If I last closed my Amex on 26-Jun-2022, was I eligible on 27-Dec-2023, or is it safer to wait a month and apply end of Jan 2024?

        • +1

So long as you're sure, you'll be fine. Call and double check if you uncertain too, they may be able to tell you.

    • +1

Log onto the Amex portal and see when your last active statement was or check your credit file.

    • Check your credit report. That will show which cards you had/have. Shows card opening and closing date.

  • One of the best points earning cards out there - 1.25 per $.

Keep in mind now the lounge invitations require you to use the card on a transaction through Qantas for a QF flight

    • With domestic Qantas Club overcrowded, sometimes undersized (ever been to HBA lounge?) and now offering minimal hospitality, I'm completely nonplussed about missing out on the lounge passes.

  • A little bit confusing with the referral links, there's so many of it, which one should one use to apply for this card?

Can someone please supply a dummy guide?

    • +4

Click the Qantas Ultimate Card one.

  • I believe it gives you 2 Amex lounge passes as well (Melbourne & Sydney only)

    • it comes with amex lounge as standard.
you are eligible to receive two Qantas Club Lounge Invitations each anniversary year of your Card Membership only after purchasing selected Qantas products and services using your Qantas American Express Ultimate Card.

  • Can anyone explain, noon question for someone who has never owned a CC, do you end up paying the full annual fee even if you get the points and cancel the card?

    • Yes

      • Thanks, somone above said the same. They don't do pro rata.

It's not a good churn burn card, I get it lol

But is it worth paying 450$ annual fee? What's the dollar rate for points? I know it's relative to an individual but, what's the rate in $

        • The $450 annual fee is worth it if you were also planning a trip as you get $450 Amex travel credit which offsets the annual fee. As to the value of the points, I haven’t looked recently but it used to be worth around $800-$2000 depending on how you spend the 100k points. One example is you can fly around the world with 132,400 points and you just pay the taxes.

          • @Slo20: This is like forcing yourself into travelling Qantas. Someone said, Qantas domestic rates aren't as good as others to justify using this credit. I can understand your point. Sounds like a great deal for people who travel frequently. Apart from air travel, what other use is for these points?

@mxcul1 creates a ghost account to post his refrrral link. Hope mods take note and penalty box all of his accounts.

    • +2

These offers bring out the absolute worst in human behaviour. Every form of social media is going to be filled with people spamming their links for the next few months and trying all sorts of tricks to get people to click their links.

      • Sadly I don’t think it brings out the worst in these people. It brings out their true colours on the type of person they really are.

  • Found it hard to spend the travel credit myself,

I found it easier to reimburse the travel credit by paying for a friend / family's flight with the credit and then getting them to send me the money for the flights. Only thing, is it has to make up the majority of the flight credit. So, booking one way for like 3 people from Sydney - Brisbane was a good tradeoff. (Around $500) ($166 each with luggage and WiFi etc)

  • Damn it I still have my Anz black card ! Only just got it :/ doubt I will be approved for this

    • Yeah in a similar boat. Thought the era of 6 figure bonus point offer was over and amex have had the low 60k one on for so long I went ahead with another 15k card instead in the meantime as well.

    • I have a Citibank Prestige card with a 20k limit and was still able to get this (plus other cards at the same time). So it's not impossible.

      • Yeh fair call. I maybe ok too but don’t want to risk it. Once declined u can’t apply for 12 months.

    • I've had ANZ Black + Amex Ultimate at same time previously, it is doable.

  • Anyone know when this promotion expires at all?

    • +1

      2nd of April 2024

      • Damn, miss out on eligibility by a few weeks having closed off the card in Oct 22.

    • +1

      2 April 2024

  • +1

Damn, I was just approved for 60,000 Qantas points last month :(

  • +2

This is a good sign up bonus. Personally I did not keep this card beyond one year as I found the travel credit too hard to use.

    Just an example:
21/Feb BNE SYD in economy. $139 w/ Qantas vs. $163.95 with Amex Travel.

    Worse in Business:
$549 w/ Qantas vs. $1,009.54 with Amex Travel - so you would actually be slightly better off forfieting the travel credit than using it on this flight if it came to that.

    • +1

True. I just got the Qantas Premium Card (one below this one), since its $200 cheaper and the travel credit is pretty useless if you mostly use points to buy flights.

  • Can someone please explain to me if I can get referral for this, If I have the Velocity Amex?

E.g. I give someone my referral link, they click on it and sign up for this offer (not the velocity one)

Do I get points in that scenario? I feel like the offer isnt available when clicking through that link?

    • +1

I don't know for sure, but from their website FAQ it sounds like it is possible.

Step 1: Share your unique referral link with a friend (found above).
Step 2: Your friend clicks the link and chooses the Card that best suits them.
Step 3: You both get rewarded if your friend is approved and meets the eligibility criteria for their chosen Card.

  • When did this promo start? I got approved for this card through a referral link on Monday. Still haven't received my card. I wonder if I qualify for this. I'd be livid if I don't.

    • +1

      This morning.

      • Thanks. Might call Amex and ask them to let me into this promo before I activate my card.

        • Could you please share how it go later? Although I was approved last month, I'm thinking to ask them as well :)

          • +4

@Silmo: Person on the phone said they'd confirm with a supervisor. Supervisor said it's okay to do it cause I haven't activated my card.

They said they'd add a note to my file and I gotta call a few days after I spend the 3K to get them to reopen the case and add the extra 40K manually.

Told my friend who had this card to try and do the same. But she got denied. They told her the reason is because it had been already a month since she got the card applied/activated.

            • @PabloVicioso: Thanks for the info. My situation is the same as your friend. It's not possible then :(

So if I get an American Express card and an American Tourister suitcase https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/825437, thats enough to vote in the American election right?

  • I have platinum which can be used on any travel through Amex travel and really struggled to use the credit at its claimed value even though we travel a lot. Everything I looked at on Amex travel was available cheaper elsewhere.

Even if it’s 1:1 on Qantas you might end up paying same or more compared to another carrier.

  • +6

AMEX has stopped approving my credit card applications. They haven't disclosed the actual reason even when I ask them and just list a number of random reasons but I reckon it is due to high number of credit enquiries aka credit card churning. They approved me first in September 2019 which I closed within 2 months after getting the bonus points. Since then, they have never approved me even if applying a year apart from each inquiry and my salary has doubled since I first applied. All other banks have approved my credit cards without issues.

    • +2

Interesting to see someone else with a similar experience and financial situation. And unlike one of the earlier comments calling them didn't produce any different results either and they were very secretive about the specific reason (though very likely to be what you said about churning) and adamantly declined to review the application. They also reiterated that there were no blacklists or bans so I guess the only way left is to stop churning for a year or two entirely before trying again lol which wouldn't be worth all the missed offers from other vendors.

      • Let them keep them keep their cup. I could do a corporate application for a no limit card as well as my employer has a agreement with them and in that case they will have to approve it but I held off as that would still cause a credit check and no advantage for me as you don't get sign up bonus on those cards.

    • +1

Exact same issue. I've churned this card I think 3x in the past from 2011 onwards successfully, last application that was approved was 2020.

Used to be the easiest card of the lot - instant approval and no wait times.

Now it's instant rejection even though I earn significantly more and have significantly less debt than before.

      • Are you still churning other cards these days though? If not then that does make me rethink about the existence of a possible blacklist after all lol.

    • I've churned with Amex a few times, but I've always kept the card for at least 1-2 years (maybe switching to a cheaper card for the 2nd year).

From their perspective, why would they give someone a credit card who last time they had one closed it in 2 months?

      • +2

That can be applied to all banks but Amex is the one being picky

        • Yeah I've had approvals from ANZ and NAB when my credit liability was well into 5 figures but at least they let you verify and correct your details during the application (when I've had cards closed 5+ weeks ago still show up). So it does seem like AMEX are more overly cautious compared to the local aussie banks.

    • Exact same issue. Was super easy around 2019 but ever since I started churning more aggressively from 2021 the recent application in late 2023 was rejected even though my income has also increased significantly since 2019

My first attempt in late 2023 was shot down immediately because their application has an automated step which does an instantaneous simple credit check against my credit history. I realise this score is inaccurate if you rapidly close an old card and apply for a new card right after because it takes a few weeks/months for recently closed cards to update in your credit hisotry.

I tried reapplying for the 2nd time 3 months after (minimum time Amex requires before another new amex card application) and again experienced the rejection from the simplified automated checks. Called them up to explain I’ve had no issues having multiple cards at the same time with other financial institutions but even after escalation and manual assessment they still didn’t budge and rejected my application and could not provide a definitive reason why.

Based on others comments - it’s looking more likely that they’re rejecting churners based on credit history. Oh well. Time to move on since they’re so picky

    • Same issue with my partner. He had an Amex 20 months ago so was eligible for the bonus points but they declined him this time. I suspect it was because we've been churning through quite a few cards of the last 12 months to accumulate the bonus points with other credit cards.

They called to advise and said they'd send an explanation via email, but I imagine it will be quite generic.

We've been churning cards for a few years without any issue, and this is the first time we've had an issue.

      • I wouldn't bother applying any AMEX in future unless I am no longer churning for a while

    • +1

I had the same problem; haven't been approved since 2019. This time I applied for the business card, and received approval today. Found the travel credit to be absolutely useless last time so opted for 50k extra points.

I've churned 5 cards in the past 4 months. Wonder if these are assessed differently. They didn't ask for any supporting documents whatsoever, which is extraordinarily rare when you're self employed.

      • How much income did you show if you don't mind me asking? My wife is self employed too so wondering if I should get the business card in her name.

      • They didn't ask for any supporting documents whatsoever

I think that's probably part of the issue where their automatic credit check system might be rejecting us churners haphazardly out of hand, which I don't think would be the case if they allowed you to manually fill out or at the very least verify/correct your financial details like the other banks do.

        • Yeah I was always getting rejected during the automated check

    • I was rejected applying for the platinum twice last year. It’s the only card I’ve ever been rejected on.

I suspect their system automatically rejects people who have opened a certain number of cards in a certain number of months, where as the banks only seem to care about salary and open credit limit.

Frustrating because I would like an Amex but I’m not willing to slow down churning elsewhere to get one.

      • Get in partner's name. I am planning to do that

        • +2

She is churning just as hard 😂

  • I was rejected with the velocity platinum card application. if I apply this one, is the requirement criteria different or my rejection of the velocity platinum card application taken into account?

    • +1

applying for multiple credit with recent rejections is never a good idea, irrespective of whether its the same lender or not.

  • I was looking at getting this until i found out it has no car rental insurance cover. Most cards similar to this have about $5000 cover, which means you don't have to take out the extra insurance with the rental agency.

  • I have discovery card, am i eligible for ultimate card?

    • +2

      Not for the sign-up bonus.

      • Do I know if David jones amx card counts?

  • Just wondering for my card, if we can book the flight on amex using the travel credit and cancel the card, then, we can amend the flight date?

    • +1

You can't, once you close the account you lost access to Amex travel. Confirmed with rep.

      • Thanks for the reply 🥲

  • A few questions if anyone can answer please. Does booking your flight using the credit via Amex travel qualify you for the Qantas lounge passes (I presume it does)? Also I presume you can use your travel credit via Amex travel to book more than 1 person (to ensure you get over the $450 min spend threshold to apply the credit)? ie I'd book my kids tickets and mine using the travel credit. Do the lounge passes allow you to bring your kids in or do you need separate passes for each of your kids?

    • +3

      Not sure if still the same, but previously;
      1. Yes, as long as you have to top up and pay extra to Qantas
      2. Yes
      3. Refer to this

      • Thanks!

  • How strict are AMEX with their approvals?
I had a $2000 CBA card, which I cancelled today. Want to get the AMEX Premium or Ultimate card to replace, with $6000-$8000 limit.

Looking at the commentary about the travel credit, I may end up applying for the Premium card instead. Although I'll miss not having the Qantas Lounge passes.

    • Premium comes with the lounge passes too; albeit not the centurion lounge (only in Intl Syd and Mel anyway).

I too have gone with the Qantas premium card.

    • I still have a 6k suncorp card active and just got approved for this one today. Unsure what my limit will be as I let them decide. No income/expense verification from Amex either.

    • I just got approved for this card and I have $20k worth of cards. A black ANZ that’s our everyday card and a 28 degrees card for travel.

  • Shame that I’ve got 0% chance of being approved for this considering I have a total CC limit of almost $80k between all my cards :(

    • Why do you have a combined limit of $80k? When they assess this, it is viewed as an $80k liability.

      • Mainly because of my Citi card, they gave me about a $60k limit

        • +1

You can easily decrease the credit limit via internet banking or the app, should you wish to.

    • if you have 80k limit, i don't think adding 3k will kill you.

  • what is the income requirement for this card?

  • This or the velocity deal?

  • Hi, Im new to the world of credit cards and have only ever held one under my belt. Im sure a there exists a minimum salary requirement to credit limit, however was wondering what the highest credit limit would be to my humble 60k salary. My credit score is 825 - tia!

    • +1

When I was making that much I think my limit was around 7k - mind you this was more than 5 years ago when credit was a little more free flowing. Hard to say what exactly you'll be given as these decisions are case by case .

  • Is there a way to apply with showing payslips etc? I've been getting knocked back ever since they've introduced this way of applying.

    • Yeah you can apply using your payslip - they require at least 3 months of payslips to confirm

  • +1

How do people usually meet the $3000 minimum spend? (or thereabouts for similar deals)?

    • +2

Some people pay their bills, some people buy a free cancellation accomodation on booking.com for a year in advance and then cancel once they get their points. Not sure if it still works though.

      • -1

Great idea re booking free cancellation accomodation - I never thought of this as an option! What happens once the card is closed and you request for the cancellation? does booking.com/expedia ask for alternative account for the refund to be processed into? Thanks!
