I pay my council rates/water rates all up front. My rent uses DEFT. Phone bill, insurance, etc..

But realistically you can just purchase Woolies Gift cards or any gift cards.

Book a long haul flight, buy the free cancellation policy. Cancel flight, get a refund.

      • Does paying council rates contribute towards the minimum spend?

        • Yes it does.

        • If your council accepts it though, mine doesn’t unfortunately.

          • @dwhes: Sometimes works through Post billpay and then PayPal.

      • Did you avoid fees with DEFT in any way? Had a quick look for my strata fees and DEFT has a 1.5% amex fee

  • Minimum salary requirement?

    • +2

Varies, they do a credit check. Over 100k should be fine, but my mate also applied with 80k/annum and got it too - but its his first CC. People get rejected over 100k too but probably due to overall debt when they combine alll your other credit cards

      • +1

I'm on 83k a year with 6k credit card active and was approved for this today after applying yesterday. Very quick process

        • When I applied I was on 63k with 15k limit

    • 95k but have only one 1k credit card active and was approved instantly

  • Does anyone know if there is a number of credit cards limit? I currently have 3 different credit cards but I am wondering if I should apply for this as a fourth or wait until I claim the bonus points for one of my other cards and then cancel it and then apply for this to keep it to 3 total? Cheers

    • The offer is valid till april 2024 so theres no rush…claim your bonuses with whatever 3 credit cards you have now.

      • So i shouldnt make 4 cards? Thats too much ?

    • +2

The 'number' of credit cards is only part of the assessment. Other factors will include the credit card limits you have in total across all cards, the number of enquiries within X months, your income, your liabilities, your expenses, your dependents, and so on.

There will always be a degree of uncertainty on the assessment - but I would expect that reducing the number of cards, your cc limits, and the # of applications within a short timespan are all variables that would reduce such uncertainty.

    • +1

A number of different factors would influence whether a 4th is possible like, total credit across the 3 you have and whether you have any late payments / how much is owed.

I personally have 4 (Amex, 2x Citi, 28deg) and just recently closed a 5th (ANZ) once the bonus points landed.

    Annual fee a joke right?

    • +1

Are you saying it should be more or less? Seems super cheap to me for what you get.

  • +2

The Amex lounge at Sydney airport is a joke. Dirty, terrible staff, few food options especially dietary restrictions wise, they also refuse to serve unlimited drinks. Shower is usually closed. And it is located in a really inconvenient location. Don't waste your time and effort…

    • Wasn't my experience at all - opposite actually, but pre covid so must have taken a turn for the worst sadly

I took up this offer 2 years ago and actually cancelled the card last week. I received the initial points on signing up but found it impossible to use the $450 flight credits in both years. The bookings have to be made through Amex Travel and I found getting the phone answered all but impossible. The complimentary lounge passes after the first year were contingent upon booking a flight so they didn't materialise either. Consequently I paid $450 in the second year for zero benefits.

    • Agreed, the $450 "credit" is in reality worth much less as you cannot book Jetstar flights and the Qantas flights offered are overpriced. I remember the time a few years ago when the flight offered with this card was not limited by price. You could choose any domestic return flight within Australia between a few options offered including Sydney to Perth! That was fantastic value, and you could book last minute as there was no limit in price.

    • found it impossible to use the $450 flight credits in both years. The bookings have to be made through Amex Travel and I found getting the phone answered all but impossible

What do you mean by "getting the phone answered" ?

You just go to the Amex travel site, and make your booking.

The difficulty of redeeming the $450 Qantas flights is really scaring me, I think the Velocity one is a safer bet hopefully.

    • +2

I think it's being overblown - it isn't difficult, it just could be better.

      • +1

You can use it, that's fine, but you will pay say $450 for a return Sydney to Brisbane flight while a similar Jetstar flight would be $150. It simply does not offset the annual fee in value at all, that's it.

        • That's one anecdote. My anecdote is that the price when I last booked travel credit was exactly the same Mel to Sunny Coast with Qantas however there were less flights available overall. Not saying it's amazing, but it does vary and everyone's experience will be different.

  • Public link now displays 100K sign-up bonus (no referral needed anymore): https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/qantas-ultim…

    • +13

By why would you not just use the referral and gift someone 40k points?

      • exactly, gotta support your fellow OzBaringers.

  • I am able to see 100k Qantas even without a referral, not sure if referral is helping here, good for referrees though

    • +1

Yeah nice to give fellow ozbargainers community few extra points.

I know I always love it when I see I got some bonus points from some random ozbargainer.

Also if not needing the travel credit, check classifieds as always someone happy to buy for 300ish.

    • Just nice to support your fellow OzBargainers and this community. Once you add your code to the referral list, you can get some bonus points as well.

  • Kudos to anyone that can make good use of Qantas points! Let me know if I am missing something. So limited seats released, it's not even funny.

I would also like to know how I can get the status so I can use the points, HSBC has SA covered but no idea about oneworld?

    • Think the people that usually can’t find the value are the ones who need to read up a bit about how to use points.

There are some great deals to be had if you book ahead and have flexibility with your travel plans.

    • Plenty of ways to use QF points for flights once you learn some searching techniques.

This year I booked flights in July - MEL>SIN>DXB in business for 3 using QF points. MEL>SIN was on QF, SIN>DXB on EK. I've helped plenty of friends and family find flights to Japan, Singapore, Europe and LA using QF points.

      • What's your recommended searching technique?

        • +2

There are a number of online resources to help you search for flights. Some are paid, others are free and people are always helpful. The Australian Frequent Flyer forum is a good place for information on searching and asking for help.
          Some general tips:
          1. Be as flexible as possible with dates
          2. Search flights with various departure ports - MEL, SYD, BNE, ADL are the main ones. Can even try AKL and SIN (or other Asian ports) if appropriate
          3. Use the multi city search to help
          4. Online tools such as expert flyer can alert if a specific fare type is available

Just as an exercise now, I searched for Business MEL>LAX and found flights on the 23rd Jan for 2 adults via AKL. Also found availability for 2 in business for SYD>HNL on the 7th November.

          • @keepa: Thanks. Been trying to find some flights to Japan mid year. Found plenty in economy but none in business yet.

            • +1

              @F-22: @F-22 - BNE>NRT with QF on the 18th July for 2pax in J

Does 100k QFF points worth more than 100k velocity points?

    • Horses for courses pal

    • Depends what travel goals you might have and which program may be better suited towards those goals.

I like to keep a healthy stock of both depending on the offers.

I just used approx 470k VFF points to fly MEL>AUH in Economy and AUH>MEL in business for 3 pax and I'm collecting saving up my QFF points to potentially to an around the world trip in business next year.

Any pit falls to me and my wife applying separately to get double points?

    • +2

Apply for yours first! Wait till you get your own referral code and then your wife could use that 🙌.
The offer is valid till April anyway, so you should have time to do this.

      • how much would the referee get?

        • +1

          40k pal.

      • Agree. Best way to do it would be to get yours first then use your referral link for hers (and anyone else you can convince)

  • Is this the same tier as the other banks' platinum or black level? I never get approved for the black range and only apply for the platinums. Wonder what my chances are with this one?

    • Depends on a lot of things like income and expenses and open credit limits, but keep in mind applicants can request for lower credit limit possible for this AMEX product, which should be $3,000. The VISA/MC minimum limits are typically $6,000 and $15,000 for Platinum and Black/Signature respectively.

Requesting a lower limit might influence eligibility.

  • Silly question, but im guessing 0% transfers of existing card balances not included

  • Just noticed that my referral link no long works. It says "expired". What does that mean?

  • -1

The 9 referals on ozbargain must be killing it right now lol

    • None for me so far 😂

    • +2

Are you looking at the wrong card? There's 341 referral links in the pool right now for Qantas Ultimate.

  • Can anyone tell me regarding travel credit whether I can use it for ( let’s say)2 persons MEL-SYD return flight in one booking via Amex travel site
    2x $300 = $600
Then use -$450 travel credit then pay the rest$150
    Thanks in advance

    • Yes

      • Thanks

  • +1

A lot of comments say how difficult to use the Qantas travel credit. If you travel overseas with Qantas e.g. Syd to Bali/Jakarta, the Qantas flight is quite reasonably priced and you can easily use the travel credit. Am I missing something here?

    • +2

Not missing anything, that's exactly the kind of thing you should use the Qantas credit for.

  • I'm seeing discount flights on Google flights, and the discount is not showing up on the AMEX site to book.

Edit - Was just 2 different airports in the one city, I had to pick the right one.

  • When do you get the travel credit? Immediately or the second year?

    • +1

      Straight away

  • Usually straight away, annual fee gets charged pretty quickly l

  • Thx, would like to get the minimum spend done asap. Any idea if woolies or amazon gift cards can count as spend? I notice the TC mention cash equivalents are not accepted, points hack website seemed to mention they count.

    • They count

    • Purchasing woolies or coles gift cards, prepaying rates, or bills, fuel cards will all count towards the min spend.

    • +1

You can also purchase fee-free prepaid cards like from this deal. You can purchase with Amex and these will count as spend. You can then use the prepaid cards later at your own pace on whatever you want (Yes, even on other gift cards)

  • How long does it usually take for points to hit my Qantas account once spend is met? Considering getting this to get points club plus, but points have to be in by 31 March.

    • +1

My experience is as soon as min spend hit they will show in account. Terms and condition suggest otherwise so could still be a gamble.

    • +1

Normally will show in your Amex account as soon as you hit the spend criteria. The points then sweep over monthly with the statement.

  • How do people count the time between cards? If I closed my Amex on 26-Jun-2022, would I be eligible on 27-Dec-2023, or is it safer to wait a month and apply end of Jan 2024?

  • wouldn't amex virgin card better as you have domestic flight which is >450 travel credit plus 100k points which can be converted to Krisflyer

  • +3

Why is everyone complaining about the $450 travel credit?
    If my math is correct:
    SYD > AKL $666return
-$450 credit now becomes $216 return with Baggage included.

You can't find an equivalent flight for $216 return to Aukland w/ baggage.

I guess its people who are saying that if you don't fly its not worth it? Or the best deal is to get it as close to $450?

    • +1

Probably people who usually take the bus

  • +1

I still have a 450 travel credit from this card. Don't intend to use it. Do people sell these, how do they transfer them and how much is $450 qantas flight travel credit actually worth?

    • +1

Not allowed to list on classifieds here anymore.

You would need to book the flights in their name and send them itinerary.

In black market worth around 300-350

  • Can i apply for this card if i was rejected for the Amex velocity one?

    • +2

You can do anything pal but whether you are approved or not will be up to Amex. Probably ask yourself has your financial position changed since the rejection

      • I think churning was my issue haha. Was just wondering if a rejection for another amex card would mean auto rejection for this or do they treat it separately if anyone knows?

        • How many cards have your churned? Looking to churn my NAB to get a Citi.

  • Does anyone know at what point your anniversary fee is charged? ie. Start or end of first month in your new year with Amex.
I'm about to roll over in Feb, but want to wait for some referrals to come through. Hoping I can time the cancellation right.

Also, if I cancel the card do I sacrifice any points that haven't been transferred to Qantas yet?

    • I might be okay actually, looks like my points transfer on the 13th and my month ends on the 19th.
So if I cancel between the 13th and 19th next month I think I'll be sweet?

      • You have to wait 18 months between cards.

        • Yeap thanks

Not trying to reapply for an Amex, just trying to avoid paying the fee for another year. Already held it for a few.

          • +1

@Woodyg22: Cancel as soon as you see the points land on your Qantas account :)

  • Applied through an ozbargain link. Now I’m trying to update my referral link and is not working. I’m getting “error: verification error - wrong format”. Can anyone help me?

    • +1

Is the link in the right format? It needs to be exactly like this:

      https://americanexpress.com/en-au/referral/(YourCode)

      • Thanks for your reply,
Link is fine. Just checked again. Is it any way to get the mods to look into this?

        • +1

It works fine for me, I even removed it and added it again. Perhaps try another browser or device.

  • Hi guys I'm new to the credit card game and was looking for some insight to some questions I have if some kind person could help me out. First of all, it looks like you get 100k points without needing a referral like the title says? If not, I just sign up using the link to this exact card in the referral links section right? Also, I plan on going overseas in about a month so is approval and actually getting your points quite quick? (I have a few big purchases to make so I can clear the $3k spend requirement in one day). Another question is how does this card go with spending overseas? I plan to go to Japan, Canada, England, and then all over Europe. It appears I might run into trouble with a lot of places not accepting AMEX and also apparently it has a 3% fee on all overseas transactions? I'm wondering if I should get another card to rack up points on overseas purchases but I think it might not be worth it. Another question is it looks like I might not get travel insurance because I'm buying a one-way ticket with full intention of coming back in about 10 months. And again I'm quite confused with booking with points. I see you have to book through the AMEX website but it doesn't look like you can do one way with multiple countries? God bless whoever helps a poor soul out here.

    • Not an expert but happy to share some basic advice:
      1. Correct - you don't need to use a referral link to get the 100K Qantas points offer. However, if you use a fellow OzBargainer's referral link, they will get 40K Qantas points for it so use it to share the love around.
      2. Some users are reporting you may get the 100K points immediately after hitting the spending criteria, or you may have to wait some time. YMMV.
      3. I wouldn't use any card overseas that has a foreign transaction fee. For my money, I'd consider the Wise or Revoult cards.
      4. If you can't afford insurance, you can't afford to travel. Travel insurance is likely worth the peace of mind if something happens during those 10 months of travel, especially something health related.
      5. As far as I know, you can't use Qantas points to book travel through the AMEX travel portal. In general, I wouldn't use the AMEX travel portal to book any travel unless there was a special deal running, or I was using my $450 travel credit. Its not designed for complicated travel plans.

      • Thank you for your help. Much appreciated

    • My application was approved 2 business days after submission. Card sent the next day. Card received 2 days after.

I got confirmation of the bonus points the day after I met the spend. But they don't seem to transfer them to your Qantas account until a few days before the end of your current statement period.

Points are not worth it when there is international fees. Only a handful of credit cards let you earn points overseas without any fees. You can see them in the wiki here. For travel it's generally better to use a debit card with no international fees if you don't already have one of those credit cards.

      1. In regards to referral, You can definitely sign up without the link, but it's more just giving the referee some bonus points (40k - just giving back to your fellow OzBargainers).

      2. If you are getting overseas, it might just be worth getting a travel card of some sort. I generally use my Revolut card when I do so.

3, Booking with points is through the Qantas website, just make sure you tick the rewards booking when putting in your flight details. The booking through AMEX is only to redeem your $450 travel credits.

  • Does anyone know if you could get the annual fee waived?
