  • Not sure i understand where the deal is here?
Do you spend $5 on a card and then get $4.95 back?

    • You don't pay the activation fees.

  • Why we would buy it for ?

To meet your new credit card bonus offer minimum spend quickly

      • Front-load spend on a credit card to meet bonus requirement as soon as possible.
      • You can use Amex to purchase these for no extra fee and get points. You can then use these at merchants that don't accept Amex or charge higher fees for Amex.
      • Convert physical only cards (Coles/Vanilla MC) to this card which has a digital wallet (GPay/APay)
      • Use this card to pay BPay only bills via Sniip. This prepaid card attracts less fees compared to Credit cards. (GPay also lets you pay some billers that don't accept cards)
      • These don't work for ATO payments, but should work for other government services/utilities which sometimes don't normally award full credit card points.
      • Didn't know about GPAY, do you have a short list of some popular examples of this?

        • +1

Do you mean the 4th point for billers not accepting cards from BPay/Sniip? I don't think it is very common. The only one I know of and have experience with is for rental payments. Some real estate agents do not accept card through DEFT/BPay, cards in turn become disabled for payment in Sniip. Using GPay in Sniip bypasses this (for now). I'm not sure if this works with Apple Pay.

  • Can you add these to ApplePay or Google Wallet to pay in store?

Anyone used these for rego or rates payments? (can't use Amex)
Says 'The Activ™ Grocery & Supermarkets Gift Card can be used instore or online where Visa Prepaid gift cards are accepted'

    • +1

I can confirm the Grocery Activ Visa card is like the standard Activ VIsa card in that it is not restricted to specific merchant categories. So it should work

      • Ah, but max is $750 per card. Not sure who accepts split payments for rego or rates, and sadly both exceed that :\
Sounds like a good option for smaller spends though.

        • +1

Service NSW even allows two split payments online via PayPal now. No issue in-store for me years ago. Your local council determines whether or not rates can be paid off by customised amounts. It is generally doable online in NSW.

Yeh unfortunately this does not work well for large bills that can't be split online/in-person like Vicroads (Except at a Vicroads service centre).

A workaround is if they accept BPay you can do split payments via Sniip but you'll be paying a 0.85% fee for that. Note that it is rare, but some billers don't even accept split payments from BPay (eg. Vicroads). Fortunately, Sniip will warn you about this if known for a biller.

  • Does the ATO accept these?

    • +3

No, it's blocked by Blackhawk themselves (Activ Visa)

      • Thanks, appreciate it.

      • Thanks :'(

I was going to try that.

  • Can these be bought and topped up anonymously? Use case is for buying digital products without providing my actual name and address which then sits in some poorly secured database waiting to be hacked.

    • You can't top them up. They are single use.

      • Thanks. My search for a solution continues…

    • You can't top these up. But there's nothing really stopping you anyway from using a made up name/address for digital goods. You can add these cards to Paypal too.

Revolut is a good alternative since you can easily generate disposable Mastercards and can be used internationally.

      • Is there a limit to how many different cards I can add to PayPal (and delete after use)?

        • +2

I'm not sure if there is a daily add/delete limit, I've done about 10-15 in a day before without issues.

          • @wangasm: does revolut charge a fee for adding these?

            • @ozbargainerlife1: You can't add prepaid cards to Revolut, most of them block Revolut. The point is to use Revolut instead of these prepaid cards for the above use case.

      • Paypal sends your name, address and email to businesses when purchasing. I've set up a 2nd fake address on paypal that I can switch to for these purchases and change my name for the moment of purchase. I don't have info on whether they send my paypal email as I use a disposable email and can only see that in my account. I'll look into Revolut.

  • Can we pay with coles gift MasterCard??

    • Yes, through Paypal.

    thanks OP,
but bought and card deducted but said "transaction declined", no gift card issued…

    • That happened to me once on Giftz.com.au

I called customer service and was told a refund could take up to 10 business days to be automatically processed back onto my card. In my case, it actually took four business days.

  • Anyone knows if this Activ Visa card can be added to ShopBack? Thanks

    • +1

I was able to do so via Apple Pay.

      • @VantageXL Thanks. Looks like it can't be added to Payment Methods to buy gift cards

        • +1

I was able to add it in Shopback without issue.

          • @hellwolf: Thanks

          • @hellwolf: I can add but ShopBack has blocked me from buying a gift card. Hopefully it will work after 7 days

            • @trixieb: Maybe certain giftcards like the Supermarket one. It worked on others for me before.

              • @Neoika: I was trying to buy the swappable Health & Beauty card

              • @Neoika: I purchased two $300 supermarket gift cards with the one I added.
