      Unbelievable

      • +14

It had no fire, no energy, no nothing! Y'know I got a Show to run here, and it must pop pop pop! …

        • +4

          Are we green?

        • How did Amazon execs come up with this, modern marvel? They rubbed each others heads together very fast until they discovered fire.

        • I heard that post. Now Bzzzzzz!

      • Believable

  • Still waiting for the echo 4th gen deal

    • +1

      Which deal?

  • +11

In the article you linked it claims "Bargain bliss: Nearly two-fifths (36%) of surveyed Aussies say they feel great when they buy something that is discounted". What in the world does the other 64% feel?

    • +15

That the other 36% are lying..

    • +2

The other 64% are rich enough who do not care about the price.

      • Pollies and reserve-bankers

      • In my experience rich people care more than anyone, part of the reason that they are rich.

      • re: the cost of living, someone on reddit posted their outrageous price for a handful of groceries. I pointed out one of the items is discounted heavily on a regular basis or 2 for 1 and buying at full price only makes sense in an emergency. Their response, "oh, I forgot about specials"

They forgot that things aren't always full price. 64% of people probably don't think about it, or think at all.

    • +4

What in the world does the other 64% feel?

An insatiable hunger to do it again. Welcome to Ozbargain.

    • +5

Or, they belong to a group of people referred in this clip :-)

    • +1

Yes , there is nothing like statisics.

Did you know that 80% of drivers think that they are better than average ?

      • +2

Fun fact: Western Australians drivers are the most likely to have driven in thongs (40%)

    • “I don’t need it… don’t need it. Be smart… be strong…” click “Damnit…”

      • +3

So you just paid $179 instead of waiting 10 days for $109.50?
That really is terrible impulse control

        • +2

What are you talking about? I was talking about what the other 64% feel when they buy a bargain.

    • Maybe they just feel good?

    • Probably indifferent

Example: kathmandu standard is 30% off, so i know the discount is not real

  • Is there a native binge app now?

    • +3

there sure is! Kayo as well!

      • Cheers thanks. Sideloading was always annoying

      • +1

Have u noticed last weekend they removed Bein sport from Kayo !! But price the same

    • Might have to plug my old firestick back in now

  • +13

Still seems overpriced. Just a streaming box but with 4K and atmos support might be better to get the fire stick 4K.

You also never see any devices that support HDMI Ethernet and can share the Ethernet connection. That way if the tv had Ethernet it would share the internet connection to the box.

    • +2

agree only thing going is a few extra connections & 16gb storage but give me a chromecast tv or firestick rather than this lump

    • Yup, twice as powerful but no real additional features. Would need multistream/multiview or 120Hz support to make things interesting.

    • +1

Yeah Google TV is fine/good, 4k & Atmos and they go for as cheap as $54. Better if you have other Google devices for smart home.

I do have the ethernet adaptor but wifi I flawless and sitting next to router anyway. The ethernet removes some functionality (like can't use send to tv app).

      • +1

Someone needs to sort out this issue with being unable to cast if using Ethernet, how hard could it be to have it connected by both but preference Ethernet for the stream

        • yeah bs isn't it - same network whether wired or wireless.
I just leave the LAN cable unplugged and only use wifi these days.

          • @G-rig: Same here on my TV, the Ethernet was much better but what good is it if you aren't casting?

            • @Jackson: yeah it's pointless and could have saved 10$ or whatever on the ethernet adapter.

  • -2

    10/100mbps Ethernet port.

Will need an Ethernet to usb adapter for any high bitrate blu-ray rips from media server e.g. Plex

    • +9

You don't need more then 100mbps for that.

Technically your 2 hour movie would need to be more then 90GB, maybe a little less to count for buffering.

Even raw Bluray's are less then that.

      • +2

        than*

      • Almost all Blu-ray's, low enough to not consider.

        • +1

Blu-rays* is acceptable. But, more commonly, Blu-ray is used for both the singular and plural. However, to use the possessive ’s, as in Blu-ray’s, to make a noun plural is wrong, as is to omit the hyphen in Blu-ray (as above) .

    • The port is 100mbs but it has wifi6e?

      • +1

Ethernet is probably on a USB interface that won't achieve gigabit speed, while wifi is probably on-chip or in an M2 slot

    • Or just use WiFi.
Agree for really high bit rate content 100mbps is not enough. Media comes in bursts so to play 90mbps content your connection needs to be well above 100mbps

  • +12

Real life advantages over the Fire Tv Stick 4K Max?

    • Bigger is better

      • +4

        Thats what she said.

    • +1

It's essentially a Fire TV Stick and Echo speaker combined. Fire TV also upscales which I believe the stick does not.

      • @Ryanek
        Don't Plex upscales too?

        • No upscaling in Plex. It can downscale (transcoding) but not upscaling

    • I would like to know as well

    • I have the same ques.. I have a 4k max.
Are Ethernet ports used for internet ? Or to connect with TV like LAN? Sorry if it's a dumb question

      • +1

For internet connection over cable to avoid interference / stability issues.

    • +4

      Hands-free with Alexa
Connect & control your devices (game console, webcam)
      Wi-Fi 6E + Ethernet port (vs Wi-Fi 6)
      16 GB (vs 8Gb)
      Octa-core 4x 2.2GHz 4x 2.0GHz, GPU 800MHz (vs Quad-core CPU 1.8GHz, GPU 750MHz)

      • Hmm, maybe these specs make it perfect for an emulation box?

    • Does the firestick have USB port?

I can see this being a all-in-one takeaway on holidays box. add a usb drive for content.
Looks like you can plug in your xbox, switch too it too.

      • +1

I had the same idea to plug-in usb for local contents and there are limitations.
Its an USB 2.0 and it does not seem to support USB hdd/ssd enclosures so you will need to use thumbdrive and it does not seem to support high capacity like 256GB.
        64GB is recognized.
And it does not seem to support any files larger than 4GB, I tried playing bluray rip in mkv format but it does not play when it is larger than 4GB.
And I tried NTFS and it worked but it is does not seem to be officially support it.
        exFAT is not recognized.

So this USB port had very limited use.

And I didn't know the ethernet port was not gigabit, maybe I should just use wifi6.

And the speaker is limited to alexa, I thought I can play the hdmi audio through this cube speaker as my monitor does not have speaker but I was wrong.

This cube also didnt have a speaker out or optical out, I hope this will be in the next release.

But this cube has obsoleted my fire tv stick 4k and echo dot which I am happy.
        The performance is also impressive.

        • hmmm… I see in the comments to use powered usb hub for external disks…
          maybe I will try this.
I thought the 15W power supply to cube should be sufficient.

        • Wow that is all something no one gets told about in on the reviews, makes a massive difference to its usefulness if you wanted to use USB.

I guess you'd just copy a couple of downloads temporarily to watch, but easier plugging in a hard drive to any TV.

Glad I didn't get one, happy enough with Google TV.

    • +1

      These are physically stackable

      • +14

Certain trigger words send OzB'ers into a frenzy.

'Stackable' is one of them, please think twice before use.

        • +6

          My bad.

          "Tetrisable"

    • +3

As someone who has both, not huge,
      - Faster
      - 4k Upscaling
      - More Storage
      - In-Built USB Ports
      - HDMI Input with Passthrough
      - Echo Speaker (although I mute mine and don't use that)
      - Wi-Fi feels better as the Stick even with dongle is often restricted by the TV screen

    • Native kayo few other thing, google vs.

  • +1

Its good that this isn't using micro-usb.

  • So looking at that back of the cube, am I right in saying you can connect the cube to TV via HDMI and then there is the second HDMI port to connect soundbar directly to it?

    • +2

Nope. You would connect this to the soundbar to get the atmos sound. Then using the soundbar HDMI connect that to the tv to get the picture. It seems weird but the only way to get atmos sound if your soundbar or receiver supports it

      • Yes I connect it this way for Google TV and works great with Atmos and HDMI arc/CEC (my TV also doesn't have Atmos).

    • +4

Considering there's mention of that ability plus no ARC/eARC label on the HDMI ports, I highly doubt it. Just connect the sound bar to the HDMI ARC/eARC port on your tv, then you'll have all sources playing from the tv to the soundbar, not just the cube.

      • I think so too.. I have rarely come across soundbars that have a passthrough for video.. the HDMI ports on soundbars are purely for input.. they cannot output video signals. For achieving this you need a receiver with passthrough..

        • +1

Considering some soundbars have multiple HDMI inputs & a HDMI out, wouldn't that mean video is outputted from the soundbar to the display? As for "passthrough" doesn't that just mean the amp doesn't need to be on (just standby) in order for the A/V to viewed on the display i.e PS5 to amp HDMI 1, amp to display HDMI 1, cycle through HDMI 1-8 inputs on amp to view on display even though amp is on standby. I'm uncertain if any soundbars have passthrough as a feature, generally amps within a range (like my entry level 2017 Pioneer) do these days.

          • @adinico: Passthrough simply means the device doesn't do any processing on the signal and passes it through to next device. So soundbars, which usually don't have video processing capabilities (unlike receivers, not amps) pass the signal to video display.. which is the TV in this case.. doesn't mean device doesn't need to be switched on.

    • It has a HDMI in and a HDMI out. The in is to pass through another device like a gaming console (noting the device can only manage 4k @ 60hz) or a bluray player. The HDMI out then goes to your TV and you can select the HDMI input when you're using the cube to pass it through.

Your TV would connect to the sound bar instead.

    • I think the HDMI input is for connecting XBox/Switch/Bluray, etc so you can free up TV HMDI input & use the Firebox remote to change over to them.

Actually might be handy as I have unplugged my Fetchbox since I don't have a spare port. But I miss the ability to pause tv.

    • You could connect the fire tv cube to your tv, then connect the soundbar to the tv via its ARC port. The audio will feed through to the soundbar.

  • +5

What's the use case if you have the fire stick? This box looks more pain than convenience

  • i would love to get rid of foxtel but love the iq box for recording. is there an alternative? this one only seems to have 16gb of space and you cant record free to air?

    • +2

That’s not what this is at all. You’re looking for something like FetchTV.

      • Or a Vodafone TV, but realistically what do you need to record that you can't stream anyway?

        • Most smart TVs have a record to USB feature too. But I get it, the Foxtel IQ box is amazing and so convenient. I've yet to see anything on the market that works as well as it does. It's just a shame that Foxtel is so expensive and their content is not super amazing.

  • i understand these can passthrough uncompressed truehd tracks, but no DTS-X?

    • This is not correct, I have a Fire TV Cube 3 and it passes all uncompressed audio that I have tested so far including DTS-X using the nightly builds of Kodi.

      • oh really, thats pretty a awesome. for a hundred bux this might be worth a shot

        • +2

For media playback it is basically as good as a Shield (in my opinion) for half the money. There are other reasons you may prefer a Shield but for my use case this does all I need. Yes I have owned a Shield before :)

          • @wombat_58: Been waiting for someone to mention the Shield, considering it's popularity on OB, and the fact that this relatively high powered box should be giving the closest experience, but having never had a Shield I don't know where the differences between them are, if you care to elaborate? Apart that for 110 bucks this is way cheaper than the Sheild has ever been

    • -1

FireCube and FireStick 4k do NOT support HD Audio such as TrueHD or DTS MA-HD.
This includes Plex when set to pass-through. Audio will play however when you check your receiver it won't be TrueHD.

There is one exception, The KODI developers are using a different player, that unlike Plex and others seems to pass through the Audio in TrueHD.

      • Using Kodi nightlies which is trivial to install it does play all formats. Using a slightly older version of the Plex add on (or Composite) for Kodi gets you all uncompressed audio passed as you would expect. I use it almost every night and it works perfectly.

        • Yep agree. People who negged have no idea.

  • The box

  • +1

    Amazing price if true!

Might look at replacing my 4K Max Sticks with these, given the benefits of the Cube over the Sticks:

    • Audio passthrough
    • Super Resolution Upscaling
    • Ethernet
    • USB port
    • HDMI In
    • IR extender port
    • A few extra buttons on the remote
    • Well worth it in my opinion. I did the same and am happy with it at $149 which I paid. Even handles some emulation if you want it to which is great.

    • If I have a modern “smart” TV is there much use for this? Have OLED LG with webOS and have all these apps on there already, as well as a decent sound system. I assume there must be a benefit but struggle to see why. Would it’s Kayo app stream at 4K (tv and phone currently don’t)

      • +1

I have an LG OLED as well and I find the apps on the Fire TV Cube to work much more quickly with little to no lag. My understanding is Kayo does not stream in 4K at all. The Fire TV Cube also passes DTS sound unlike the LG TV when connected directly to the soundbar/receiver.

        • +1

          thanks fellow wombat.

Kayo is horrible on webOS with know issue for constant buffer (always at the most critical F1 moments) so end up casting via phone. Added to the wishlist for a think over the next 10 days.

          • @Wombatstew: I use Kayo via a Kodi add on. When the Kayo app launched on the Fire TV devices it did not do frame matching. I am not sure if that has changed but the Kodi add on works so well I just keep using it.
