        • I've got a 2016 LG OLED and a 2022 LG OLED, webOS tends to run outdated versions of apps and some apps don't play as nicely compared to android. I've got an NVIDIA Shield TV on each because the shield tends to be better in terms of processing power, app availability and internet speed (LG OLED TVs also only have 100mbit ethernet).

I did consider getting a fire tv cube, maybe I'll get it for my brother.

      • +2

Would it’s Kayo app stream at 4K

Kayo doesn't offer 4k, you need to subscribe to Foxtel satellite for that.
if you're happy with the LG apps, then I wouldn't bother.

        • I believe Kayo is pretty good on an AppleTV box but my mother has a previous to 4K model so it’s old could guess it’s better on newer hardware?

          • +1

@dman1: It's mot hardware (well a box can attempt to upscale HD -> 4K). Biit Kayo doesn't transmit in 4K.

Foxtel over satellite does, but not kayo.

      • Smart TV is dumb and slow comparing to it.

      • +2

I have a Sony TV with one of the more responsive Android interfaces, yet use a FireCube daily,
        a) Small easy remote with dedicated, buttons for Prime, Disney and Netflix
        b) It's a Lot Faster
        c) In my case better audio going FireCube -> Audio Receiver earc -> TV (than TV -> eARD -> Audio Receiver)

    • -3

WiFi has better bandwidth than Lan, but get people prefer lan. If you play high bit rate content from Plex lan does t provide enough throughput.

  • What OS does it run? Can you sideload apps if it's android TV based?

    • It runs Fire TV OS which (I think) is based on Android 9 32 bit. Sideloading apps is no problem, the Fire TV has a built in browser and you can download apps using that and the Downloader app.

  • +1

    Does this stream foxtel go?

  • How does this compare to the Nvidia shield? :)

    • UI/UX blows chunks compared to shield, and shield isn’t exactly champion itself in that domain.

      • Agreed. I have not tried installing a custom launcher but some owners have.

      • Settings for unsigned apps or apps from foreign source are more complex - settings over all on Fire TV OS are more complex.

That said jump on Troypoint who does a lot of Fire TV Stick modding - they have some step by step helpers. I bought a Ethernet adapter for my Fire TV 4K Max - aside from a mess of cables it works IMHO better if you do have a mesh network or if your Wireless Access Point is only one room away. The Ethernet options for the Fire TV sticks can be quite picky with which device to use, if you don’t pay for the original. Have read comments about the UGreen running faster than the genuine Amazon Ethernet adapter. So that’s what I got. There is a chart somewhere of several models and the genuine one doesn’t rate very well.

Don’t like that it’s only 100Mbps. Maybe running it Wifi will be a better option depending on your home setup.

As for UI/UX IMHO the Shield TV Pro is easier as it’s almost a stock Android TV. Amazon Fire products are completely down different.

Whatever you get used to. I think the Shield TV Pro though I hate that it has so small internal ram for the 2019 model for me, is easier to use than Amazon Fire OS.

        Just my pov.

    • Better UI, but Shield remains king for upscaling and supporting all audio formats. These do not support TrueHD.

      • Mine does, perfectly

        • -1

Sorry you don’t know what TrueHD is, even states in the documentation. It will play, but check your receiver it won’t be recognised. I’ve done dev work on the firmware so we’ll aware of what these can and can’t do.
I should clarify the hardware does\can support but the Android version does not. Kodi is the only know app that uses its own player cable of passing through TrueHD. Plex/Emmy will play Passthrough TrueHD but your receiver receives the compressed audio because these still rely on the Android Audio apis.

          • +1

@UltimateAI: Yep I do. My audio device shows DTS-X. I was watching a 4k movie tonight and it was with dts-x using Kodi. Duh. Please stop spreading misinformation, using Kodi it works perfectly as you would expect.

            • +1

@wombat_58: I already said in an earlier reply Kodi is the only
Known app that supports TruueHD because it doesn’t use the Android API. Plex, Emmy even is passthrough can’t play TrueHD with the fire stick but can with the shield.
That is the same for all the native apps, they don’t support TrueHD with this device.

              • @UltimateAI:

Plex, Emmy even is passthrough can’t play TrueHD with the fire stick

The Fire TV Sticks don't support it, but the Cube does:

                https://www.aftvnews.com/fire-tv-cube-gains-improved-upscali…

I get TrueHD Atmos using Plex on the Cube.

                • @kirt: I can assure you, you don't, but if you are happy with the audio, then great.

                  • @UltimateAI: For TrueHD, playback using Plex on the Cube appears the same for me as when using my Shield Pro (ie: Plex showing Direct Play (TrueHD), and the receiver showing Atmos/DTHD when set to Straight), and there are plenty of reports of TrueHD working on the Cube on the AVSForums…

…but if it's not, then is the Cube processing it somehow before passing the audio, or…?

  • +1

Can you intall whatever apk you want on it similar to Firestick using developer function?

    • Yes

      • Great, thanks bud!

  • -2

    200,000 movies for free? 😳

    • 200,000 movies and TV shows from Netflix, BINGE, Stan, Disney+, Prime Video and more (subscription fees may apply)

      • Oh. I thought it was free access by buying the box. That's what happens if you read a deal too quickly. 🙄👍

  • +2

10 days wait ! That is 3 lifetimes for a Millennium
Nuclear wars are shorter than that.

  • +1

can I load kodi on this?

  • So in short, it's like a beefed up Fire tv stick 4k max, with integrated echo dot speaker.
RAM the same, more storage, ethernet built in, better chip, and improved upscaling to 4k.

Double the price…. probably worth it?

Happy here with my fire tv stick 4k max, but keen to try the cube :)

    • +1

If you are happy with the stick then umm stick with it (apologies), otherwise the Cube is a better device for more money.

    • +1

USB ports also come in handy for many use cases.
But really it's faster and supports 4k upscaling.

      Max has a Quad-core CPU 1.8GHz, GPU 750MHz
      Cube has a Octa-core 4x 2.2GHz 4x 2.0GHz, GPU 800MHz

4K Max is a perfect travel companion.

      • mmmm thats a good point… i never thought of that, maybe i'll get one of these and free up one of my 4k max sticks for travelling

  • Can it play gamecube games?

    • I think Dolphin is a 64 bit only app, so likely not.

    • It’s a pity that there’s no Android tv boxes as powerful as the Apple TV. That much power you’d be able to emulate switch games.

  • Is this or a Chromecast/Firestick better? Can you run Kodi?

    My Roku is so sluggish!

    • Burn that Roku put it in the bin right away

Yes this is 100 times better and yes you can run Kodi

  • -5

Most people have a smart tv with chromecast built in these days so not really needed as no real benefit

    • +2

Smart TV might be enough for some users, but devices like these tend to be way more powerful and a more pleasant experience to use IMO.

      • I have a 65" Aldi TV, it has no smart features.

        • So a firestick or firecube would be great if you want access to apps etc.

    • +4

I have two LG OLED TVs. I have an NVIDIA shield pro on each. Android apps are updated more frequently and there are more apps compared to native TV apps. Plus the wifi and ethernet speed is better on my shield than my TV. For those who use Plex and Kodi, android tv boxes and fire TV cubes tend to be better.

    • Because of the extra power, they usually can offer improved upscaling, like the Nvidia shield uses AI upscaling while the cube uses what they call super resolution upscaling to improve picture quality. The extra processing power can be used for other things too, say for emulating older game systems. There’s also certain apps that can be more resource hungry that the extra power can make for a better user experience.

  • Im hoping it will play media files from my 5tb portable HD

    • +1

Amazon recommend a flash drive or powered external spinning disk.

    • +1

Mixed success depending on the power draw of the drive.
Powered usb hub can be used.

  • +1

Does anyone know if this can adequately replace a Harmony Hub as a universal remote hub? With Harmony hardware discontinued, always looking for replacement possibilities.

  • Does this have all the tv apps? Particularly that one that vanderpimp on it!? If so we would love to axe the old Apple TV

    • Yes. It has the Apple TV app too

  • 9 days to go….

  • Update all, now confirmed via Amazon AU press release

  • Are you sure the echo dot will be $39.50? The press release says the deal will be 50% off RRP on the Echo Dot, and the RRP listed in the link is $99. The current price of $79 includes a 20% discount off the RRP.

So the price could likely be 50% off $99 or $49.50.

    • Thanks for pointing that out. I miss clicked the 3!

  • 3 days to go…..

  • Will this bad boy play h.265 files from a usb stick ??

Fetch was my go to, but that has since been binned after that terrible software update.

    • Did you look up 'specifications'? H.265 is pretty basic but looks fine:

      H.265 (HEVC). Hardware accelerated up to 2160p (4K) @ 60fps Main 10 Profile Level 5.1

      https://developer.amazon.com/docs/fire-tv/device-specificati…

I've got 2x Chromecast with Google TV and although this firestick is great price probably won't get one. Guess can try and push files to Kodi over wifi or vlc, or plug into TV, but it's pretty rare that I would with streaming these days. Nice if Google did have a USB slot or something though.

  • Available now :)

  • why would i want this if i already have the google tv chromecast thingo?

  • Seems like the type of product that will be promoted on prime day sales

  • What do with this
    How's compare to firestick

  • How useful is that HDMI in port on Cube in practice?

    • +1

I replaced a Fire TV Stick with a Cube in the family room yesterday, and plugged the Xbox in to it, because although using Alexa on the remote to switch HDMI inputs on the TV works well, it wasn't working consistently, so now instead my kids can just navigate to the HDMI input / Xbox icon in the Fire TV menu to switch inputs, without using the voice command.

  • -5

HODL - gonna be cheaper on Prime Day imo

  • I just bought the xiaomi tv stick 4k for $65 seems like a decent little unit

    • Looks like you’re comparing the standard Echo (4th gen), to the Echo Dot (5th gen)

      • yes, my bad. the echo dot 4th gen amazon page, has the table showing the 4th gen comparison.

was looking at the table on the 5th gen dot page

  • +2

Don't forget the 7% cashback for Amazon devices on Cash Rewards!

  • I was going to get an ethernet adapter for my lounge 4k max stick…. but maybe i'll get one of these instead….. $29 vs $109… but…. mmmmm….

  • so what would the benefit be of these vs Chromecast with Google TV (which you can get for $54-70 pretty often)?
From what I'm seeing is just Wifi 6 and the ability to connect media (USB)??
Still seems tempting, but no google home integration.

    • More processing power, AI upscaling (similar to nvidia shield, mixed reviews though), more ports, more storage, more ram. You basically are buying in to the Amazon ecosystem with this, so cons and pros. I haven't had any of their hardware devices for years. However as great the Chromecasts are, the performance of the things does annoy me. I hope Google update their hardware soon. I can't see why Google can't put out something hardware wise comparable to the Apple TV.

      • Sounds ok, not really interested in the Amazon ecosystem though. The Google TV is pretty good but agree could use a bit more grunt and a USB port when they get around to upgrading it.

      • The thing I don't like about the Amazon TV is how jumbled the interface is, bit simple and clear like Google TV. Even the Amazon app is full of rent or buy prompts and is even worse now that they got these partner subscriptions (Britbox etc). Google you can turn off most services you don't use but still get the similar issue of content you don't want to see or buy on the home screen.

Also good plugging the Google TV into the soundbar and it's hidden, but recognise some people may be using the cube for is speaker so slightly different.

  • Anyone has experienced running the xbox cloud gaming on Fire TV Cube?

    • +1

No but I tried Moonlight with local game (nvidia) streaming (on Fire Stick 4k Max) and was on-par (excellent) compared to my mini-pc.

Also xbox cloud gaming has very bad screen artifacts/tearing/refreshing (for me atleast) on the mini-pc.

      • Thanks

  • bruh won’t let me even install kayo on it :/
    sideloading here we come

    • Might need to update? All Fire TV devices now have binge and kayo on the app store.

      • turns out it was somehow linked with amazon uk lol

  • How do people compare the echo / speaker part of this? Where would it compare in the echo series ? Would it be similar to the echo dot 5th gen? i presume not?

  • Can anyone help me understand:

Can I plug the fire cube into my tv, and plug an HDD into the Fire Cube and watch things that are on that HDD?

(Plugging the HDD directly into my TV doesn't work).

  • I was sold on the fact that you can run 3rd party apps on this thing + runs prime video + netflix in 4K HDR etc

  • This vs the Apple TV 4K? If ignoring the price difference…

  • +1

So I have the following devices now:

    nvidia Shield Pro
    Xiaomi Mi Box
    Google Chromecast TV
    FireTV Cube

FireTV comes in second place for me based on my 2-3 hours of usage. I use Plex, Kayo and also tried Jellyfin on it.

I am going to give my opinion below on whether I would upgrade from one to another based on the assumption that I already own the original device.

The Shield is an outright clear winner, snappier and obviously no amazon/fireTV junk. I am unsure whether I would upgrade to a Shield from a Fire TV Cube. At this stage, i'm leaning towards a no. The Shield is better, but not worth spending ~$300 on to upgrade.

The Xiaomi box is pretty good but is definitely not as fast as the FireTV Cube - I would NOT upgrade from this device to a Fire TV. The improvement is not enough.

The Google Chromecast TV is the slowest of the bunch, and is now relegated to my travel device. It does the job, but is noticeably slower. I would definitely upgrade from this device.

    Standings:

    1 - nVidia Shield Pro
    2 - FireTV Cube
    3 - Xiaomi miBox
    4 - Google Chromecast TV

    • Yeah $300 is a bit different to $54-70 but probably worthwhile if you use it extensively or loading a lot on. I find the ccwgtv great for the usual streaming apps, NordVPN, nothing fancy etc. Maybe you just been to reboot it.

      • It's been rebooted plenty- and been reset etc.

I'm not suggesting it doesn't work, it was upstairs in the kids sitting area for a year or two and they used it without issue. But it is noticeably slower than the other devices - and given the price difference between it and say the Fire TV Cube, then it's a no brainer to go the Fire TV Cube in my eyes.

The only major negative for the fire tv is the OS. So far no issues with it, but who knows what Amazon will do in the future with app availability. Yes, sideloading is an option but adds annoyance factor.

        • Yeah all good, looked like a good device for $109. I'm not going to bother, in the Google ecosystem and not doing anything fancy with it (ie normal user).

Be nice to lose the bloat and cluster from Amazon and google home screens, rent or buy bs.

  • Can you install steamlink on these and how does it go for local streaming of games? My chromecast with google tv chokes hard when I try that… I think mostly because of lack of processing power too.

    • My Tv not anywhere near as good as the monitor, just run a cable. Also tried it on Google, but don't bother gaming anyway really.

      • How would I run a cable through multiple rooms? Also what do you for control?

        • Dunno.
Just saying PC to chosen telly. Gaming is rubbish anyway better off Just at your PC and proper monitor
