Several of my clients got a rude shock after being migrated over to these that there's no Binge or Kayo available.

  • +17

These are not good. Even when they were giving them away, was too expensive .. rather buy a Firestick or GoogleTV

    • +4

Thanks for Saving me fifty bucks ;)

    • Thanks wanted to ask this

So which one is better google TV or fire tv?

      • Get the new Google TV

      • +3

New Fire TV 4K Max when you can get it at 50% off a lot of the time. The new Google streaming device is over-priced in my eyes.

    • +1

Personally, I find them a pretty good deal at $48. Some of the things that Fetch provide that you can't do on Firesticks etc:

      • Record FTA TV from your antenna-sourced channels, which allows you to fast forward through the ads when viewing

      • Access all FTA channels without an antenna direct from the TV guide, not using a catchup app. It's just like you had an antenna attached.

      • Premium Channel packs available much cheaper than Foxtel. $6 per pack, or all 4 packs (50ish channels) for $20. If you get value from Discovery, Turbo, ID True Crime, MTV, BBC Drama etc, this is one of the cheapest ways to access them.

      • You can share one account with 3 boxes, and they don't have to be at the same address. So I subscribe to the Ultimate Channel Pack, and my parents who live 400kms away get to access them all as well. If any of us buy or rent a movie, we can all access the movie.

      • It aggregates all your streaming services quite nicely. You can search for a movie title, actor, genre, whatever you like, and it shows you everything you currently have access to, from FTA channels, catchup apps and Streaming apps you're subscribed to.

But, I concede that if you don't watch FTA TV and/or aren't interested in streamed linear channels, then I wouldn't buy one of these.

        • Record FTA TV from your antenna

No! FETCH Mini CAN'T RECORD FTA TV
Fetch Mini doesn't have the ability to record content. However, you can pause a TV program you're watching. If you leave the channel paused, it will automatically go back to playing live after 15 minutes.

Requires a Fetch Mighty with HDD to do that!! Which I enjoy using. Cost $99 in Deal here.

        • What was that fetch mighty for $99 sorry? From here? Shows $396 for me
I have a couple minis, would like a mighty to stream FTA to them

          • @Wimma: Deal 2 years ago.
            FETCH were clearing 4G model
Dropped to $79 for a Mighty - from Fetch.
Listed as "refurb" but were new in box, latest remote, 12M warranty.

        • You're right, my bad for not being specific there. I was talking about Fetch generally, but obviously that's confusing given the Mini is the sale item here. You are absolutely correct, only the Fetch Mighty records FTA. All the other points in my post relate to both the Mighty and the Mini.

      • I use mine like once or twice a year to watch FTA on my second monitor at my desk.

This.. I finally got rid of Optus NBN and the only downside was losing my free/cheap Fetch Mighty and the wife has lost access to HGTV and a few other channels we used to get and I have not been able to source them from any other streaming service (which suprised me).. so thinking this might be a cheap way to get those channels back.

I have the new Fetch Mighty and it’s a great unit. Wife loves it for recording FTA shows.

It’s not clear if this mini box is latest no model number but new box starts with an Hxxxxx.

Telstra currently allow free multi room sharing on same account but plan to switch to a $5/mth charge. Info from their site.

Assuming then, if unlocked, multi room sharing would be available but Fetch site feature comparison states no sharing of recordings/movies between mini and max.
If new model and allowed to share would seem a great deal, but Telstra offer no detail on model though pricing after discount suggests old model.
        Confused? I know I am!

        • This is the Gen 5, it's the new model. Because the box can be unlocked from Telstra, there's no cost using Multiroom as a retail customer.

As far as I'm aware there's no issue sharing recordings from a Mighty to the Gen5 Mini using Multiroom, except that fast forwarding those recordings on the mini doesn't work well.

          • @ayoole: Took a chance and ordered one. Had points available so nothing to pay.
Did a chat session beforehand and they confirmed Gen 5.

The Gen 4 Mighty Model M681T that we have is an excellent performer. Very happy with that.

          • @ayoole: I've found it much better to pull recordings off the Mighty to be shared via Plex (so haven't bothered with a mini), things look great afterward with NVIDIA Shield 4K upscaler. I also re-encode and add chapter markers for ad skipping.

  • As someone who owns a seldom-used Fetch Mighty, I might still consider picking up one of these on the cheap so I can use it to receive my Mighty's FTA aerial feed in another room where I don't have an outlet.

Pretty much for State Of Origin, the NRL Grand Final, and the USA feed of the Super Bowl only. 😂

    • Is your Mighty from Telstra too ? Apparently you can't mix and match boxes from different providers. Happy to be corrected.

      • Fetch boxes provided by ISPs other than Telstra (Optus/iiNet etc) can only communicate with boxes provided from the same ISP.

Telstra-provided Fetch boxes like the ones on sale here can be unlocked to use as standard retail boxes. So if you already have another Fetch box you bought from JB or the Good Guys, for example, you can connect that to a Telstra-provided box.

        • so to buy it i just need to have a telstra account with phone or what ever to unlock and get it going, then i can use data from another provider to stream stuff? wanna get for my parents. im with telstra but they now.

          • +1

@dogget6: Correct. Once you activate it from a Telstra account you can just get Fetch to unlock it. Unlocked or not, the box doesn't care where the data comes from. I use Superloop NBN with my boxes, my parent are on the same account but have Telstra NBN.

            • @ayoole: I found similar information at https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/3rvj75yk

Just received my order (HY4424, so gen 5) and I tried to activate it directly as my 2nd box on the retail account with a new activation code from that, but didn't work and had to use Telstra code. I assume this is because this serial number is already added to the Telstra account. I also got free ultimate package and movie box until May 31st, so 3 months. So going to try to remove this from Tesltra account and add as 2nd box in Fetch account after that, until this this would be the main one :D

How hard is it to get them to remove it? I checked in the Telstra app, there is no option to remove it by ourselves, only shows service details and box serial number.

              • +1

@bazingaa: I've done it by simply calling Telstra.

              • +1

@bazingaa: Yep, this is how I did it too. Use the 3 months freebies first. I couldn't find an online way to unlock, so I called Telstra and it was quite straightforward, took about 3 mins. Once unlocked I was able to activate it online with my Fetch retail account.

                • @ayoole: thanks mate! gonna try this after may :)

        • I have a Optus Mightly already. If I buy one of these, will it piggy back off the mightly so I can receive FTA in another room?
Or because they would be from different ISP, they wouldnt communicate?

          • @Will146: Optus boxes are permanently locked to Optus accounts, so you won't be able to share one account between an Optus box and this Telstra one, even if you unlock it.

The Fetch world is a world of pain and anxiety! I have had a mighty and mini before and they are just horrible devices. Full of bugs and unreliable.

    • Enjoy my $99 Mighty. In use every day.

      • me too, it is more sensitive than the TV tuner.

  • No dice. They might just remotely disable these in a year or two like they did the Telstra TV/Roku devices.

    • +1

Its from Fetch, not Telstra as commented before. Not an ISP locked device by accounts.

      • Be that as it may, I won't even buy socks from Telstra.

  • All the negativity for fetch on here is just a few in the minority. Having come thru from TiVo to Fetch, they work great, with regular software updates, no bugs etc!

You need a mighty to record FTA, which can then be streamed to a mini in the bedroom etc. has the majority of main stream apps that other platforms have.

Do yourself a favour and buy a mighty when it’s next on sale for $99 (refurbished).

  • Pretty sure this is the fetch mini 4K and not the fetch mini k g5.
Nothing on Telstra page says g5.
You can see the difference between the mini 4K and mini 4K g5 on the fetch site
    https://store.fetchtv.com.au/

    • Had a chat session with Telstra who confirmed that the offer is for a Fetch Mini 4K-G5 model.

  • I got mine free from Telstra and still binned it, horrible to use went back to Chromecast and fire stick, at least I can get Kayo on those.

Even the Telstra TV was better

  • +3

While the deal is good, I'm negging on the product.
I had a one and the updates made the Fetch Mini box unusable.
With one update they made it go from a reasonable tool to unworking.
I asked for a replacement for my previously working box but they said it was oit of warranty. I said they came into my house and broke it.

    Avoid at all costs.

    • +1

yes same here. do not buy this junk e-waste!

    • +2

Which generation / model# Fetch Mini?
      ISP or Retail box?

This is the latest Mini G5.

Older FETCH boxes can't handle the frequent updates. Lacking the memory & processor speed.

In the case of the FETCH Mighty, that's why Fetch offered cheap ($79 or $99) new Mighty boxes to Gen 2 users to upgrade to Gen 4.
Gen 2 was limiting upgrades for all Mighty - to what Gen 2 hardware could handle. So Fetch stopped support for old Gen 2 Mighty.

With faster processor chip & more memory, Gen 4 was a much better box. Added latest voice activated Bluetooth remote (included with with Gen 5)..
Then opened offer up to all to clear stock for better Gen 5. I bought a Mighty G4 then.

So problems you had are unlikely with latest model in this Deal!

      • +3

I received mine, model number is HY4424, which seems to be G5
        https://www.fetchtv.com.au/specs

Device is good and seems to be bit snappy than my mighty.

I also got free ultimate package and movie box until May 31st, so 3 months.
The only issue is that I need to try to move this to my main Fetch retail account with Mighty, which I got for $99 from a previous deal, so I can use multiroom.

  • +1

I have a Mini and a Mighty, linked to support recording of FTA. (If you have a Mighty) $48 for a Mini is a v.good price.

  • +1

Have a Fetch Mighty which is buggy but works most of the time.
Had 2x Minis. Terrible. Thought the first was faulty so go the second to replace it.
These units are S L O W. Loading Aps takes ages. Keypresses can take 20 -30 seconds to register.
    Dont waste your money

  • are they retail boxes or network-locked?

  • PSA : You can use your Boost account to login to Telstra

  • Can they be hacked or modded to run Android or something else?

    • +1

Reading review that says G5 has RDK-Android OS and is getting a version of AndApps which (in native form) apparently allows access to virtually all android apps. Fetch’s implementation will be restricted though allowing them to “curate” which apps are accessible.
Hopefully restrictions will ease over time.

  • Received the unit today. Can confirm that it is a G5 model with 4Gb of ram.

  • fetch send me this email.
If you also have a Fetch box from Telstra and cancel your Telstra Fetch account, you can move your Fetch box to a retail account directly with Fetch.

The warranty of your box applies from the original date of purchase/receipt and will remain with Telstra.

You can contact Telstra on 13 22 00 to confirm your warranty period and request that your Telstra Fetch account be cancelled.

You will not retain access to any Channel Pack/streaming service subscriptions, or Movie/TV Show purchases on your Fetch box which were associated with your Telstra Fetch account, after the transfer.

Telstra Plus points are also not accessible via retail accounts directly with Fetch.

Once your Fetch box has been removed from the Telstra system, please unplug the Fetch box from the power and reconnect, if connected. You will now be able to activate the box using a retail Activation Code.

  • I need another Fetch Mighty, feels insane they are up near $500 now though. $199 refurb at JB seems ok until you remember they were $99 not so long ago.
