Harman Kardon Citation 700 Soundbar $229 @ ALDI

410

Looks to be a decent price for a 5 year old model Soundbar without Sub, outputting 210W RMS. A lot of value here given it has Apple AirPlay, Google Home & Chromecast built-in, you normally only see that on Soundbars $600+. Harmon Kardon is specialist audio brand, it seems that this model was selling for $799 when first launched 5 years ago.

To me, this would be perfect for a bedroom or small apartment

Harman Kardon. Now sold at Aldi. How the mighty have fallen since being bought by Samsung. They used to be both the duck's guts and the bee's knees. What's next B&O ?

    • Samsung bought them? That explains it

In March 2015, Harman acquired the automotive division of Bang & Olufsen for €145 million (US$156 million) for the unit as well as technology license fees. The purchase did not include Bang & Olufsen's consumer-electronics business.

On November 14, 2016, Harman entered into an agreement to be acquired by Samsung Electronics. In February 2017, Harman International shareholders voted in favor of the acquisition by Samsung.

      Ducks nuts?

    • Were they though? I remember my old ass Toshiba laptops from want 2000s were promoting the Harmon Kardon speakers, and they were rubbish. Sure, laptop speakers aren't supposed to be good, but they seemed to be standout rubbish. For the last 20 years I've seen their brand pimped out on consumer rubbish - enough so that I've never taken them serious or considered them an option for premium sound.

  • Wall mountable?

Reviews mention it coming with a wall mounting kit, but who knows if this is going to be a stripped down package.

Bing Lee cleared this product out for $112(binglee.com.au) at some point, so don't expect anything really. Soundbar tech needs a lot of work really, too much dynamic compression and audible distortion.

If you have the space, take advantage of the used speaker market and enjoy your life. If you don't, try to research implementations and technology that can actually output decent sound in the form factor (hint: there's not as many as you think).

    • Any recommendations for smart speaker?

    • thinking of replacing a old pair of marantz ls200 (like the sound, dislike the look of peeling film) with this one, will I notice the difference?
      what is a decent alternative?

      • Mid-range Klipsch Cinema (horn tweeters) and Denon/Polk offer something with a bit more stereo separation without burning cash and barely improving distortion.

Personally I'd start digging into the used speaker market (Stereonet, FB marketplace).

Far out a 5 year old soundbar still being worth $229

    Oof

    • +4

Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro is several decades old, still, one of the most sought-after headphones today.
If you believe a 5-year-old design in audio makes it obsolete, you know not much about audio processing or reproduction.

On another note, nothing to do to with age, I would not buy this specific equipment.

Would it be better quality sound than a JBL 510 soundbar?

For what it's worth Telstra are showing that JBL 510 sound bar for $159 and Good Guys Commercial are $128 (+$9 delivery if required). The sound bar appears to have good reviews for the price and seems like a top price from Good Guys Commercial, so I just ordered one.

        I already have the SB510 bought from jb-hifi ($180).
Was asking to see if it the soundbar listed is an upgrade or not.

The SB510 sounds great. Suprising amount of bass for a soundbar and is clear sounding.

For best use I've found placing the soundbar on a solid surface with at least 1 inch space from the the front of the soundbar and the surface is resting on allows the bass reflex port to have better low end bass.

Very good reviews, worth a buy over TV speakers and has HDMI arc so easy, reliable connection

    • pretty much anything commercially available is better than most Flat Screen TV speakers these days.

Anyone purchased and can give any feedback re sound quality?

Ok, no takers so I bit the bullet. Cracking bar for the money. Very premium build and functionality. Easy set up and using mainly for music listening, over airplay it’s awesome. Crisp and really well balanced sound - plenty of volume too. Sooo impressed for this money, it’s in the bedroom btw - 4x4 meters. Replaced a Samsung S61A that was more expensive and difference is very noticeable.

      • Can you add a sub?

      • How does it sound with tv/movies? Considering getting one. Thanks

        • I found the profile worked better than other sound bars I've had for both music and TV/Movies in a bedroom setting. If it was for movies in a larger room I'd add a sub if possible.

@Fancydancer: So I ended up buying one based on your comments. Got to say I'm happy with the buy also. I'm no audiophile, and I'm using this in my larger living room which is very open. Much better than the TV speakers obviously.

What I can appreciate with testing this soundbar for only an hour after buying, it's great that I can Google Home to it as I'm already in the ecosystem, together with YouTube Music, I now get decent audio quality in our living area (previously I was using a Ultimate Ears Everboom or a Google Hub to do this).

Also great that I can use Bluetooth to my smart TV, so don't have visible HDMI ARC or optical cables insight (I will eventually go to either of these methods when I can be assed removing the 85" off the wall bracket again to feed through the cable behind the wall).

Only thing is though, I was curious on adding the Harman Kardon Citation Sub S… The price of these are crazy, so I won't be adding this anytime soon!

Edit: PSA… When checking the stock availibility on the Aldi site, my local said it was available and was green coded, however when I went in they said all gone. My other Aldi stores all were indicating low stock and only a couple left. Thought I'd try my luck with the other Aldi store, they had 2 left, to which I grabbed one. If you're thinking about getting one, better do it quick, else they'll all be gone!

              Harman Kardon Citation Sub S

I guess wait another 5 years and it'll also turn up heavily discounted at ALDI. Or even Bing Lee based on a comment above.
