Make sure you select a ‘return’ booking.

You can't tell me what to do… Banzaiiiiii!!!

    • +144

I think with Jetstar it doesn't matter if you choose return or not, it's their call.

      • +33

Also their call if you fly with your luggage or not apparently.

      • +5

        Genuinely LOLed. Well played.

      • +6

        The Orange Gamble

      • +7

They should rename themselves to Jerkstar lol

      • +7

I wouldn't buy Jetstar until they have fixed their fundamental issues which are:
        1. Attitude toward customers
        2. Attitude toward safety
        3. Attitude toward business integrity
Australian are laid back but not all are stupid. Discounts may work for some but not many. They will soon learn their lessons and won't buy Jetstar anymore.

    • +3

      Aren’t they called crapstar now

    • -1

To vax or not to vax, that is the question..

  • +46

Issue with this deal is its Jetstar. Safe up and spend it on a proper provider.

    • +6

Yes, it's much better to spend more and get a quality experience like Qantas where you know you'll get to your destination on time and your luggage will be handled with care.

      • +10

Jetstar is Qantas owned. Experience will be equally shit, but Jetstar will also charge you for basics as well.

        • +3

They also charge about 1/3 of the price on average. Even if you do pay for some of the things its actually still cheaper most of the time.

        • +14

I was actually just joking. I thought the part about Qantas taking care of your luggage would have make it very clear I was being sarcastic.

I personally legitimately really like Jetstar.

          • +2

@watwatwat: I figured it was sarcasm. The Qantas travel kit should include a blow up lilo for sleeping on the floor in the terminal.

        • +1

Love the irony. I had two flights to MEL-SYD with Qantas this year. One cancelled the day before, the other at the airport then after a three hour delay I was routed via Adelaide, and my was luggage lost. I drive now. Tokyo overland is more appealing than these clowns.

      • +1

Unfortunately that is not always the case with Qantas. Two weeks ago, my father-in-law's business class direct flight with Qantas from Sydney to Hobart was rescheduled to a non-direct flight the following day, and then his luggage didn't make it out of the first stop, and was delivered late the day after that.

      • +1

        You’re missing a /s

    • oh the nightmare on exactly this route.
stranded in the "via Gold Coast" part from 5pm (broken plane), got to hotel at 1am, had to be up 5am to take replacement flight.

  • +22

Some of these flights are over 23h! Jetstar can f right off

    • Better than 4 days like some flights

    • +1

Does that include time stuck in Alice?

    • +1

Yep. No direct flights fom Sydney, Melbourne or any major city, only Gold Coast or Cairns. That means an unreliable domestic flight with lost luggage before you even get to check-in, let alone on the plane to Japan.

  • +3

return of zero dollars is only showing up for club jetstar members when clicking through (return melb)

    here's why …

Club Jetstar Early Access ends 11.59pm AEDT Tuesday 28 February 2023 and Public Sale ends 11.59pm AEDT Friday 3 March 2023, unless sold out prior

    • See you there tonight then (IF there's anything left for you, that is, as I'm an hour ahead of you in Qld!).

  • +16

(melb) terrible flights, not worth it, once you add baggage $850+

    • Can you go with just 7.9kg carry on?

      • +3

yeah 7kg, but its long travel times 3 flights up from 17h +, return 2-3 flights from 16hrs+

      • +6

Yes but they’ll weigh you before boarding and find you’re over then charge $65 for overweight carry on. Last time this happened to me they forced me to take the hoodie that I was holding in my hands and put it on the scale so my luggage can be overweight. Only got the money back after lodging a complaint and threatening the ombudsman. Don’t hesitate to fight back if they act in an unreasonable manner.

        • For February Sydney to Melb, they didn't weigh my small A4 sized backpack.

For February Melb to Sydney (terminal was banked up with flight delays), they didn't weigh anyone's bags in my flight.

I also chatted with an officer who told me that under 7.9kg is passable without extra fees. Luck of the draw? They'll probably screw me over next time lol.

        • +11

You could of just put the hoodie on. Would have saved you a lot of hassle.

        • +4

          I would've dressed it on 😅

          • +5

@wisdomtooth: I would never pay for overweight baggage. Whatever you are carrying in your bag is not worth $65.

I would stuff all my pockets with heavy stuff. Put power converters, portable battery, literally anything you have in your bag just stuff it in your pockets or down your pants.

If you are still over, go and wear 5 tshirts if you need to.

If you STILL are over, just throw out whatever is the cheapest thing you have.

Consider it a bonus $65 you have to go and buy new stuff again.

            • +1

@watwatwat: Old mate John Smith above needs to take a leaf out of your book instead of whining they weighed a jumper he was carrying around as a hand bag.

    • When there's no deal running, I find it cheaper to book the same JetStar flight with luggage through Qantas website than Jetstar's.

      • Luggage? What luggage?? 😄

  • Every Jetstar deals always attract complainers lol

    • +14

It's not hard to imagine given the number of news / complains
      https://www.google.com/search?q=jetstar&source=lnms&tbm=nws

    • Maximum complaints but they still make maximum profits. Complaints are doing nothing to stop them turning a profit.

      • +3

        Money talks, whingeing walks.

    • +6

True. Jetstar is actually amazing value. Once you play the game, the rewards are there to be had. I always get excellent prices on international fares. I don't pay for luggage, meals, insurance or any extras at all.

I don't have to wait for checked luggage at the destination (nor worry about bags getting lost or damage).

I did pay for club jetstar for the first time but the early access has been necessary on some occasions. Many years ago I would just go without and wait until midnight to book, but on some sales, the good fares sell out during the pre-sale or are very limited.

And as of now, I have citibank credit card so get unlimited priority pass for a year. So it'll be nice to pair with jetstar flights so I can eat in lounges beforehand. Then when on plane, just play downloaded youtube videos and netflix on phone.

If jetstar changes or cancels my flight, I'll just extend my annual leave and fly back whenever they can offer a flight.

To the people who don't want to fly with them, each to their own. I am able to fly internationally all the time for prices severely cheaper than alternatives so I appreciate their presence in the market and services they provide.

      • +1

I want to be this man!

      • International flights with just a carry on is a stretch..

Do you wash and wear the same clothes everyday? Or are you a nudist?

        • +1

What, you can't fit more than one day's worth of tshirts in to your bag?

If the trip is long, just do laundry half way through.

          • @watwatwat: One day sure.. 3 or 4 days set of clothes nope.

            Cold climates need more clothes…

            • @CauseNEffect: You enjoy taking luggage, so please do.

You help subsidise the cost of my airfare and thank you for that.

If I didn't already pay for the $300/return to Saigon deal last week and plan my trip, I'd definitely be hitting this up…

    • +1

I also booked mine to Saigon considering my budget. Would have still opted out Japan considering the costs after landing there more expensive than Vietnam.

      • True but I have friends in Osaka and Toyko I can stay with for free + camping in Japan is free so I was going to spend a month or so hiking.

On the other hand I got a hotel room in Saigon for 7 days for $100 in district 1

        • Since you have free accommodation in Japan there is nothing like that! When are you flying to Saigon? I am going from Jul 12 to July 22. Have not booked any hotel yet though.

          • +1

@Yankyviking: I booked July 13 - September 13, but I also bought a $30 ticket from KL to Saigon a few days before my return, so I will go to Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. Haven't been to Malaysia yet!

I didn't pay but booked my hotel with free cancellation.

District 1 or around there is a good choice. I haven't been since 2016, but I recommend these restaurants:

            Bun Cha: https://goo.gl/maps/9HecWganCLSSeeA46

Bò Lá Lốt (somewhere in this alley are food markets, I hope its still there!): https://goo.gl/maps/LCRWvY7gDKrwDaxz7
            • @ChipP: Thanks for your recommendation! This is my first time there so this will come handy.

Also, did you pay $30 return from Saigon to KL? That's pretty cheap! And how much did you pay for Thailand's flight from Saigon?

              • @Yankyviking: Right now I'm not sure how I will travel. Might travel over land in Cambodia to get to Thailand, or fly to Hanoi first, or fly straight from Saigon to Bangkok, to then explore Thailand and Malaysia by land. I just want to finish my trip in Malaysia so grabbed that flight through Air Asia.

The only issue is I need to get a multi-entry 3 month visa rather than a single entry month visa.

            • @ChipP: @ChipP Which hotel did you book so cheap? I have 2 weeks trip in Saigon.

              • +1

@dhoa: pretty sure its sold out now. Go to booking.com and click cheapest, then look for a single room. I'm not sure if the place I booked my single room is part of a hostel or not, if that dissuades you. I hate hostels, but I think it'll be ok.

        • Which hotel did you book so cheap? I have 2 weeks trip in Saigon.

      • -5

Cheaper than ever for bogans to afford to travel to Japan.

        • +27

Pretty sure Japan is quite expensive and a lot more civil.

          • +1

@nightelves: Yes but cheap flights like these will attract bogans.

            • +1

@Griffindinho: Singapore is cheaper but I hardly see many bogans there. There's also Malaysia and South Korea as well.

              • +5

@nightelves: Yeah but Japan is popular because of it's culture. Singapore, Malaysia don't come close. maybe Korea is a distanced second in popularity thanks to the rise of Korean media consumption from western audiences.

              • +5

@nightelves: Apart from Kyoto, I find Japan pretty reasonable. I stayed in a large hotel chain (MyStays) in Nagoya for $35. I pay about $120 to stay in Ueno at a decent hotel (like MyStays). If you've not too fussy, you can get a decent meal for $5 from one of the food chains.
You could be a lot fancier than me though :)

                • +1

@dazweeja: I wish those prices were still available (outside of capsules and hostels). Japan is also finally going through inflation too. It's still "cheap" for us but prices are creeping up or amenities are disappearing from hotels.

                  • +2

                    @wackedupwacko: Yeah, I don't think I'll see the $35 deal again.
This is one of the ones I've stayed at in Tokyo. A quieter part of Ueno within a short walk of Ueno JR station, which has good connections to the rest of Tokyo and Shinkansen. Even closer to the Ginza line to get to Shibuya and Asakusa. It was clean and totally fine for my needs. Queen room for $113 (on some dates):

                    • @dazweeja: Hey.

Can you please comment on the neighbourhood and connections. I just plan to do day trips in and around tokyo and surrounds (I’ve been to Japan before).

                      Thanks.

Ps. Sorry if the link is stuffed it’s Hotel Gracery Asakusa.

              • @nightelves: Because bogan is smart enough to not get caned for jaywalking.

                • @lgacb08: Wouldn't mind a bogan or two get caned over chewing gum though.

            • @Griffindinho: Until they realise it’s expensive there and they tell all their bogan mates that it’s crap cause you can’t get shitfaced on $20.

          • @nightelves: But Australians aren’t.

    • +2

Ayers Rock experience ALL from the comfort of your chair, with plenty of time to analyse the scenery in all it's glory.

        • +1

During Covid Qantas ran flights which would just fly over it, so this is the same thing but free.

      • +1

They're several hours from each other…

      • Dude you realise they are hours and hours away

  • Aside from flight and hotel do you think 4k would cut it for 5 or 6 days or so sightseeing for a family of 4 in Tokyo? Im tempted. I know stuff all about Japan and short stays. At a guess i would say disneyland (not super expensive from what i saw) and then eating and seeing stuff.

    • -4

Not even close if accommodation is factored into the $4k.

      • -1

Not sure why you got negged, I agree. Benefit is that the Yen is super weak at the moment making things a bit cheaper. But you still won't be able to feed four people at even a cheap restaurant for less than $80-100.

        • You're kidding right? Cheap restaurants in Japan have meals for $15-20, OP could even go to some midrange restaurants if they don't buy any drinks

          • +2

@DDKN: Do you know how to do maths? $20 * 4 = $80, which once you add even soft drinks (which are sold at Australian prices) gets you over $100 in a heartbeat. Plus two more meals to worry about, plus the cost of travel, which adds up for 4 people even on their affordable metro system (and ignores the costs of travelling outside Tokyo). Disneyland is also criminally expensive.

            • +3

@xyron: My maths is good enough to not ignore all the ramen or katsu shops selling a bowl for $15 or less 😘

              • +4

@DDKN: Kitsune Udon for $5 from any regular restaurant, a beef bowl for $5 from Yoshinoya, plenty of options if you're not fussy :)

                • @dazweeja: Don't tell me, tell Xyron who apparently doesn't know what budgeting is

            • @xyron: Like i said i have no clue about prices for stuff like this. I go in the opposite direction for my Asian holidays. I wish i was perfect and all knowing but alas I am not Jesus

              • +1

@Motek Benzona: Ignore them, with correct budgeting it is doable, hopefully you get to go Japan is very fun

        • Depends where you go. Cheap eats you can do a bowl of ramen with one slice of meat for about 500-600 yen. Beer and smokes are also stupidly cheap in comparison to Australia as well.

On the other hand going to eat Sukiyaki, Kobi Beef and other fine dining will cost you a few hundred.

          • @a l an: Yeah but with kids do you think a bowl of ramen will do them let alone all the walking they have to do.

      • excluding accom and flights, just living

        • +9

Easy, Japan is cheaper than Oz.

Even on accommodation side their is plenty of good value and don't hesitate to use airbnb for larger groups. Did some dummy bookings mid may and 2 twin hotels rooms for 7 days in Tokyo (Nishi Kasai, near Disneyland) is under $1400 and I bet I could find more.

Eating is very cheap with a basic breakfast, like a can of coffee/ 500ml coffee milk and a croissant is usually under ¥300 from convenience stores.

Even eating at restaurants, I had (in Hiroshima), a okaminyaki and beer all cooked in front of me for about ¥1500. And for the very cheap eats you can go to supermarket and get great meals not just ordinary eats (like bento) for under 500¥.

Even premium Japanese dining, particularly at lunch should be able to be had for under $100 a head.

I'd also suggest family restaurants like Cafe gusto who have great breakfasts and lunches for under 700¥ and most times including unlimited drink bar :)

Only big tip is to avoid the golden week public holiday in April/ Early may.
