      • Yoshino, Sukiya, matsuya, katsuya, hanamaru udon. Convenience stores. You could literally be living off $20 a day in food and be fed decently from those places It just won't be great food nor too healthy.

Scale it up a little and at $30 a day you could treat yourself to a nice lunch a day (dinner tends to be a bit pricier).

Capsule hotels / shared hostel rooms are the cheapest option and can be had for around $30 per night. Otherwise if you want to go true ozb style, hit up internet cafes / manga cafes. They usually have some sort of cheap shower facilities and you can get a cubicle with a computer for cheap.

Instead of taking trains to go a couple of stops, you can walk instead. Just judge the time saving vs cost appropriately.

But all in all, you could be going around $50 a day if you really wanted to for food, accommodation and travel.

    • Is planning the first family trip to Japan and would love to have a few useful links. Cheers!

    • please pm me too!

    • please pm me thanks in advance!

      • Can't message you, but here's some things.

We were mum and dad (50), sons (20,16,13), daughter (10) and eldest son's girlfriend (19).

In Tokyo, we stayed here in Tokyo. <5 min walk to main temple complex - there are temples everywhere here. Yoshi the landlord picked us up from Narita, price included in the rent. 3 bed "town house" in quiet street. Very nice.

Stayed here in Kyoto (booked through booking.com).

Hired an Alphard hybrid from Toyota for Y20,000 (~$220) a day for six days. The one-way fee (included in this) was about $600, but we wanted to catch the bullet train from Kyoto to Tokyo.

On the road we stayed at Achi (two shared rooms in a home), Magome (traditional, with dinner, bit boarding school like), near Gero (small house in semi-rural development), and Omihachiman (town highly recommend, stayed in a townhouse).

I have links to these places if you need them, and others.

We used Suica cards in Tokyo and Kyoto and paid for the Shinkansen. We didn't worry about JR passes because of group size and hire car freedom.

We used japan-guide.com as our first stop for info and trawled from there.

Hope some of this helps. Happy to reply to PMs

  • If i intentionally choose transit for more than 24 hrs in Cairns or Gold coast, can i exit the airport and stay overnight near airport hotels?
I reckon the checked baggage also need to pickup and checked again as its between international and domestic?

Last time i booked like this separately (one way).. no issues and in fact i loved it (take a break instead of long hours in the airplane).

      No reason why not.

I did BNE-CNS-NRT previously and yes you do collect your bags.

Not sure if you can get the same deal if putting multiple days between your arrival and departure in Cairns though.

      • I found Syd-CNS-NRT for 27 hours as one ticket (not intended to multiple ticket),
Syd-CNS at afternoon and CNS-NRT the next day, i cant imagine people intentionally stay overnight at CNS airport

As long as you accept that in the relatively unlikely event of a cancellation Jetstar will shaft you, they're an alright airline. Cancellations are very rare, and besides the bare minimum service Jetstar tick all the other boxes. Better than flying on crappy carriers (Cebu anyone?) via crappy international ports, which is all you'll get for these prices.

    • +1

I tend to agree. Before Covid we flew to Japan (twice), Hawaii and domestic. Rarely delayed and no cancellation. After Covid 7 + hours delay. We already booked Singapore Airlines for $1200 coz we need to meet parents in Changi (flying in from different country). Otherwise, I ll take this deal and use that 30% difference for other things. Having said that the accommodation rate had hiked 30% or more since we booked. So more or less it ends up similar price.

  • Ok, we're in! Didn't wanna risk not having any reasonably priced seats left at the convenient dates to us after midnight — they were already disappearing right before my eyes — and forked the Club membership (hopefully we'll get some perks with that). Going in late June means we don't need to pack much; a carry-on will suffice, so luggage risk is slashed to zero (only on the way back we bought a checked-in 20 kg bc… Japan! And if it gets delayed, it's no biggie.).

i am in adelaide if I drive to Cairns
park my car on the street
go to japan and back would it work?

  • +1

You can catch a train from Narita to Tokyo with a stop at every station that takes 2 hours and as one commentator said it's only $15. The express train is $35 an hour.

Jetstar carry 30% more passengers in their dreamliners, something has to be sacrificed. It's called soundproofing. The passengers on all flights I have taken with Jetstar to Tokyo have been absolutely quiet. I have travelled Singapore Airlines royal silk on a Dreamliner and it was heaven. Try a Jetstar Dreamliner and you will know the difference with the Jet noise.

      So… take noise cancelling headphones?

      • +1

Even with noise cancelling headphones it's pretty bad.
My poor Sony XM3s couldn't handle it a few years back.

    • +1

Is there seating in cargo hold now

      • Theres going to be seating in the wheel well. Might need to wear a thick jacket though as it could get mighty cold up at 10,000 or so feet.

        • Nah, she'be'right in late June, when it's summer there.

  • +3

Would highly recommend waiting for another Singapore Airlines deal, I got mine return for $750 for late March.
    Night and day difference.

    • From Sydney? Good deal too, especially smack in the middle of Sakura. But, over 50% more. Depends how large one's family is, I guess. Horses for courses (and large families ride mules 😅).

      • Yeap Sydney! Going solo but it was $750ish return with a 3 hour layover in Singapore which isn't bad at all (I wanted to check out the airpot anyways).
This was booked all the way back in late November so I had no idea Sakura was happening, happy accident I guess?

        • I made the same "happy accident" flying to Kyoto some 15 years ago, when Jetstar had just started flying internationally, and I snapped a ticket then. I surely got more than I bargained for! (and don't recall any mishaps with Jetstar at the time, considering I already knew they're a budget, no-frills airline)

  • $500 return on Jetstar, while it is tempting, a real airline is likely to be a safer bet for most.

  • Bought for partner and I in early Dec! Any idea how cold it gets in the middle of the country? Thinking of visiting some riverside towns in Gifu but might be a bit too cold/snowy :(

    • That was our trip early Dec last year. Darling Downs/New England winter was our experience. Snow high, sometimes cold, great for hiking.

      • Oh that’s not too bad, guess I’ll pack my boots and an extra jacket 😊

  • What would you do for 12 hrs in Cairns overnight?

  • -1

All free return tickets sold out by the looks of it

    • Not sure if it was OOS at the 1st midnight already, but we ended up forking the Club membership before then in FOMO. Paid off, I think.

    • +2

Keep an eye out. I thought they were all gone and then I got super lucky and got one an hour ago from gold coast returning december 19th. I just saw one pop up a moment ago for the 16th that was free. They might be drip feeding extra sales or mabye its people cancelling?

      • Congratulations, now you've cursed me to keep refreshing the Jetstar page every minute until 11:59PM

  • For those looking for accommodation — especially with children! — especially with children who love dinosaurs and robots!! — I thought this was a great deal (especially with a free shuttle to Disney at the door!).
