@wisdomtooth: Just google Japan golden week 2023 to see dates

              • @Pcoder: Dunnit:

In 2023, Golden Week is from May 3rd(Wed) to May 5th(Fri). Although April 29th(Sat) is also a national holiday, it’s Saturday in 2023 so you will have a total of 5 days off from May 3rd – 5th.

Oh, now I remember having to reread Japanese webpages 5 times over to figure out what they were saying from last time I went a decade ago 😅

            • +1

@wisdomtooth: All of April is when Cherry Blossom occurs from south to north of Japan.

          • +1

@Pcoder: Mate this is exactly what i needed to hear, actual street level advice with sensible comparisons. . Im not a holiday tightwad but I am also not the kind of person to go to ridiculous levels to eat touristy crap.. like anywhere. Even more tempted now. Im so used to going to other places for some reason this is a bit scary to book!

            • +3

@Motek Benzona: The thing with Japan there's is so much choice. Yes there are the expensive watermelons, but these are more or less gifts people give as Japanese households don't tend to accumulate heaps of items, so something consumable like this is relately popular. There us also regular fruit that isn't as pricey (400¥ for a pack of mandarins / a few hundred yen for a bunch of bananas).

The reason why Japan is popular here and why I have been at least 8 times is its great value and excellent cuisine, even the cheap stuff is excellent.

              • @Pcoder: I have to agree here. Their food is next level and their convenient stores which are our 7Elven has so much to offer.

    • +6

You could probably do it if you're not planning to pick up lots of gifts, collectables and all that jazz. You can eat each meal for about $10-$20 per person if you're not picky and happy to eat local. I'd just be wary of travel around the city, as it's super easy and convenient which means the costs can sneak up on you quickly.
I did 11 days by myself last August and I spent about $1000 but that included a lot of drinking, travel down to Kamakura and eating out freely.

      • +1

        How much was your hotel?

        • I was there before they officially reopened and had an AirBnB for the week at a super lucky price, around $780 for the whole time and about 5-10 mins walk from Shinjuku.

    • +4

      Realistic factoring.
      Food per day:
$140 (12000yen). Will have you eating very comfortably
So total of about $800. Round up to $1000 for the occasional splurge.

Travel. If JR pass : ~1000 for family of 4. Cost shouldn't exceed this. If you don't plan on going too far from your main city hub then it can go down as low as $50 a day for a family. (And Tokyo alone has more than enough to keep you going for 5-6 days with minor day trips). More realistically you'd budget about $80 a day if you're just staying in Tokyo as you take day trips out.

Activities, should be able to do with about $1000 in 5-6 days. Don't be fooled by the base Disney pricing. It's worthwhile to pay for the extras and VIP passes. Other things like going up skytree, or teamlabs planet is usually in the ballpark of $20-40 per adult.

Those should be the bulk of the costs. Spending money is of course completely up you.

      • So 4 to 4.5k is realistic..perfect

      • I'd say 5000 yen per day for food is comfortable depending on your preferences.
Good ramen joints are rarely over 2000 yen, I was roughly spending 6000ish.

    • Tokyo would be comparable to Sydney or Melbourne in pricing. I didn’t find it wildly expensive except for some fine dining (it was our honeymoon). Hotels are small everywhere.

Food I found to be cheap. Plenty of street food for snacks (octopus balls). Plenty of restaurant chain selling ramen or udon or donkatsu (rice).

Went during Cherry Blossom so cost of train ticket to the parks all over Tokyo. Have a sit down picnic there.

There are half day guided tours to Mount Fuji. I personally found it better with the lake and Fuji in the background. When you’re on Fuji it’s like being on any hill albeit with a better view (unless there’s fog which gives you 10-20m then it sucks)

Pick a hotel that’s walkable to JR line. Or pick two hotels close to JR line but across town from each other so you get to experience more of Tokyo.

I felt safe the whole time in Japan so would be perfect for a family trip. You could forget a backpack outside the shop and it will still be there hours later or with the shop attendant.

Jetstar operates like on demand shuttle bus service, they cancel flights, and not providing any alternative arrangements for customers grounded in overseas airports.

  • +3

Jetstar could pay me and I'll still refuse. Terrible airline.

  • +5

    Stay away from Jetstar

  • +4

Friend came back from Japan the other day, was meant to come back last week but thanks to Jetstar, they got bumped off numerous flights

  • +5

24 hours in Alice Springs…. Nah that's a deal breaker.

  • +10

return for free so they don't have to refund you when they inevitably cancel your return flight?they're getting too smart with the cost cutting these days

    • +1

They'd offer a "free" replacement though?

      • +1

Yeah but that could take days. Meanwhile your bleeding funds for the unexpected addition to your length of stay in that country.

        • +1

does travel insurance cover the extra costs?

          • +1

@hippyhippy: They might if you paid for it but being the tight arse travellers some are. They often opt out getting travel insurance.

            • @xoom: i would never travel without insurance… its even free with alot of credit cards…

              • +2

@hippyhippy: I know. I don't either but there are people that see travel insurance as an unnecessary expense.

Me personally. I rather have it and not need it than needing it but not having it.

                • @xoom:

there are people that see travel insurance as an unnecessary expense.

If you're staying with relos, it is.

                  • @wisdomtooth: Well your relos wont be of much help when the airline decides to cancel your flight. Or they decide not to fly you back till a week later than you originally planned.

Or decide not to take your luggage on the same plane.

Or you get sick or injure yourself abroad.

                    • @xoom:

Or you get sick or injure yourself abroad.

Travel insurance doesn't cover that; overseas health cover does.

Well your relos wont be of much help when the airline decides to cancel your flight.

Travel insurance won't be of any help either, if you don't have extra expenses to claim.

                      • @wisdomtooth: Now we are splitting hairs. We both know what i meant.

                        • @xoom: Ok. But if your travel insurer denies your claims to overseas health expenses, don't say I didn't warn you 😉

                          • @wisdomtooth: If im forking out money for something i tend to want to read what its for.

                              • @wisdomtooth:

If jetstar changes or cancels my flight, I'll just extend my annual leave and fly back whenever they can offer a flight.

See this is nice. If only everyone can afford to fly back whenever. I mean don't we all have lots of paid leave?

And them kids don't have to go back to school right away really.

                                /s

                                • @xoom: So you see, there are people that see travel insurance as an unnecessary expense not bc they're tight arses, but bc it truly is unnecessary to them 😉

                                  • @wisdomtooth: I did say some not all. So no need to get on the deffensive now as clearly you are not the target of my comment.

Jetstar - fly at your own risk

  • +1

Just reading this news.Looks like every passengers get free Alice Springs visit planed or unplanned..
    https://www.perthnow.com.au/travel/jetstar-flight-grounded-i…

    • Its bonus side trip. See the airlines are looking after you when they throw these extras free of charge.

  • +2

saw Tokyo/Osaka… then saw Jetstar…. sad

    • Had me in the first half… ngl.

  • +6

Thankyou, booked :-) got some pretty neat layovers via Cairns etc

Blah blah cancel cancel Alice Springs etc etc. Shy of paying 3x the price via another airline that is still not immune to cancellation, what do you do?

    • +1

Exactly, i was looking at prices with other budget airlines for my dates its 1.2k not including baggage. The fact i got it for half the price, ill take the risk with travel insurance

  • +1

Used to be a huge Jetstar fan. After a recent experience of not being able to get back for multiple days (at least it was domestic) I would not risk it being overseas. I guess at least worst case scenario you could stay at a capsule hotel in Tokyo.

  • I purchased some flights a month ago and got the max bundle so i could cancel and get travel credit if needed. It says that getting the travel credit voucher can take up to 24 hours. Does anyone with experience know how long these vouchers usually take to get?

    • I get them immediately. Just remember that they have a 12month expiry period I believe so find some use for them or plan to have something that you could use it later on.

  • Thank you, i was planning a month long trip in japan later in the year. Every other place was bloody expensive. Jetstar is definitely risky but the deal is too good

  • base on feedbacks here, sounds like a risky sale

    • +2

It's soso. JQ had a few issues with their 787s that fly the long international routes resulting in a bunch of people not being able to go anywhere or have alternatives. The latest one was a medical emergency that had to stop at alice springs but after landing there, there was a mechanical issue that meant they couldn't depart again.

Overall not that much more risky than other airlines with cancellations, its what happens in the event of a cancellation as Jetstar usually don't have alternatives routing. If you have to be somewhere at some time and can afford it, book a major full service. ANA has sales for around 1380 return atm. JAL is a bit missing but I don't expect them to watch ANA drop prices and not respond.

SQ has flights later in the year for about 950 (with a stop over in Singapore of course) return.

At the end of the day, money talks. No matter how much people whinge, LCCs are still filled up.

  • When browsing around, i noticed the price is only cheap for club jetstar member, some like $0 vs $529 (general public). Is it open for member only atm? Yes… we flew jetstar to Jakarta last Dec. Delayed for 7+ hours, they lined us up to board for 1+ hours and we got $15 compensation food voucher… Yay!! We claim travel insurance since missed connecting flight and had to spend a night. Seems like travel insurance can play with their wordings etc. even quote the incorrect max claim threshold (which is not in their policy) to avoid paying. I told him to read his own manual and he quickly accepted. Is that even legal?

EDIT: Just saw the early access banner lol

    • +1

Its a member only sale until midnight tonight then it opens to the public

  • Just wait till they cancel or change your flight on the way to the airport.

    • +1

Its alright you get to fly. Just your bags won't be with you on the plane. Not like you need it. yeah?

Replace the manager with Alan Joyce and replace channels / cable with baggage and fees.

    lol jetstar

  • So it requires the membership right?

    • Just until midnight.

  • +1

Recommend checking other dates as well before booking.

Got 2 tickets to Osaka return from 1st Nov to 13th Nov for $750 total.

No cancellations, changes, baggage, seat selection, insurance. But still worth the risk for the price I guess.

    Thanks OP !!!

    • Did you get luggage for that price?

      • Nothing else apart from seat in flight… Not even meals 😀

        • +1

Imagine if it was a bring your own seat. Better not say anymore. Dont want to give these airlines anymore ideas.

          • @xoom: Ok might be there were even cheaper dates which I missed…

    • i got 30kgs for both flights for for $650 are you sure youre looking properly? from late oct to late nov

  • -1

You'd be crazy to flight with Jetstar right now, especially on a flight involving connections

  • Is anyone that stupid to fly with Jetstar? Possibly the worst airlines on the planet.

    • Russian airlines just asked to hold its beer.

      • +2

not really. Russian airlines actually are right up there with the best for ontime flights and low accident rates, back pre covid Aeroflot were number 1 for ontime flights worldwide.

        • Soviet efficiency and engineering.

        • +2

          It's because they're always rushin'

        • +1

You are joking right. Aeroflot has the all time record for most fatalities (11k+), almost ten times more than second place. Granted their record has improved recently, but the Russian regulatory system is seriously flawed and a lot of their domestic aircraft have very poor track records.

Jetstar might have lousy service but their safety standards are outstanding. Like most western airlines they recognise that a serious accident would be catastrophic to their reputation and they invest appropriately. Not to mention CASA maintain a strong (if overbearing) regulatory framework.

          • @nigel deborah: It has been flying for a century and a for a long time was the largest airline in the world. Aeroflot have been rated as one of the safest in the industry for a long time now. Most of their fatalities were many decades ago.

            • @gromit: Do you have a source on them being rated as one of the safest in the industry? I'm genuinely curious, I know they've had a better record since 2000 or so but I didn't think/know they were considered 'one of the safest'.

              • @nigel deborah: only the airline ratings and various articles on them which I have read ever since I married a russian and hence had initial fears for her travelling on aeroflot. Most of their horrendous record comes from pre 90's soviet era. They are a very different airline post soviet breakup. No airline that has been around a long time has a perfect record, aeroflot in the 50's to the 80's was abysmal, that all turned around in the 90's. Remember even Qantas has dozen of fatal accidents pre jet liners.

                e.g. one article for you
                https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/news/Aeroflot-from-worlds…

  • Booked Mel to NRT. Stopover 1 night at Cairns.

  • +2

Jetstar to/from Japan? Never ever again. I don't care how cheap it is, they'll only ever burn me once.

  • Anyone found any good angles for status runs with this?

    • +1

Yes this is an insanely good status run if you find the right max bundles.

~$800-1000 return for ~180 qf status. Thats about $4.5-$5 per status point which is excellent outside of double status.

  • +3

Jetstar fly out from Narita which is an hour by train from TOKYO and cost per person on that train is about 35 Australian dollars. So per person it's 70 dollars return. One needs to factor that price into the airline ticket. Tokyo actually have an airport with a $5 AU monorail Tokyo less than 10 minutes from the city. Narita is no Changi airport. I just returned after a 7 Day holiday in Tokyo. Average restaurant meal is $11. A 2 year old hotel in Tokyo Bay was $60 per night including breakfast. Hotel Tavernos. You can buy an unlimited Subway pass for $15 per person for 3 days. Japan is so much cheaper than Australia and still is. The exchange rate was 60 yen per AU$ and is now 92 Yen for a dollar and so Japan is so much cheaper than it used to be.I did not factor buying a property or renting one. Japan is exceptional value and an extraordinary place to visit. That was my second visit. The noise inside a Jetstar aircraft is unbearable and almost impossible to enjoy watching a movie. I took noise cancelling headphones the second time. I made the second trip because I had unused domestic Jetstar vouchers. I will never fly Jetstar again in my life. I will pay more elsewhere.

    • It's not $35, it's more like $15 and slightly cheaper with more stops.

I don't think an extra hour is that bad considering flights to Haneda could be hundreds more.

    • +2

Noise complaint is interesting. 787 is one of the quietest aircraft in the world, even the slightly older Jetstar tails. Or did you mean the passengers?

    • Flew into Tokyo last time and the extra hour or so to get back in to Tokyo last time was just a bit too much imo. It was super late when we got in and we were knackered.

This time flying in/out via Osaka since we didn't go there last trip, and airport is much closer in like Haneda but flight prices are comparable to Narita :-)

  • +2

I just booked it…was about to book JAL or ANA but it's double the price.

For my family of 3, that $1500 can be spent on accommodation and activities

    • Had the same thought, just gotta get really good travem insaurance

    • Half the price means half the seat assignment

    • Was JAL or ANA direct? Did it include baggage?

      • Yeah…direct and baggage

        • +1

Include baggage and seats, that shrinks the difference down some more. I would've gone with JAL, much better customer service and plane ride. If it was ~1k a ticket, that's a bargain.

Would not deal with layovers and higher risk of cancellation for that much

    • Yeah definitely, it's too cheap :-) if we had to pay full airfares tbh the trip probably wouldn't be happening.

  • So $150 for covid test? X2 ?

    • +1

Not required if you've been triple vaccinated for Japan.

  • When I see AS, all I can see is gang violence.

    Jetstar

You lost me and many there

  • +1

So essentially they can cancel your return flight and issue you a refund of $0!!

  • +1

might be a dumb question, do we know if one Jetstar plus membership can buy multiple tickets? Or is membership required for each person travelling?

    • +3

      Found:

A Member can use their Benefits to make a Jetstar booking for themselves and up to 4 other people (5 passengers total) on jetstar.com

  • The booking calendar is a nightmare - mine is constantly not showing prices. I've tried both Chrome & Edge.

    • +1

If you select the dates itll show prices on the next page

  • Was up until 20 December earlier but now the website has changed to up until 13 December

  • +4

As good as international airfares get, IMO.

Our family group of 7 spent 19 days in Japan in December with an earlier version of this deal. Some minor flight changes (time of day) in advance, no delays, no problems. We flew from Brisbane to Narita via Cairns and direct back again. Three suitcases between 7, as that was all that would fit in the hire car anyway. No meals — it's 10-12 hours, so snack for crisssakes.

Units and apartments through airbnb and Bookings.com with giftcard deals and cashbacks kept accommodation to under $40 per person per night.

The hotboxes at ubiquitous convenience stores are the best I've eaten from. Bakeries are seemingly rare but very good value for pastries and full-on sandwiches.

We often had to split up for dinner (many restaurants are very small). A little tepanyaki restaurant in Kyoto was our most expensive dinner (Y17,000, ~$200, for 7 in two sittings, spent about $30 on the way home for hotbox snacks). The bargain was small town suburban Chinese (Y7000, ~$90, for 7). No booze or softdrink in those bills. Water is your friend.

Happy to provide a few links if anyone wants them.

    • Happy to provide a few links if anyone wants them.

Yes, pls! Finally someone who knows how to travel on a budget!! (instead of whingeing about not getting 1st class treatment for budget prices)
