Not just London, Europe as well.

Flights to india also seem to be discounted

  • +1

I was looking forward to similar service to that of Singapore Airlines when I flew before Christmas. Unfortunately didn’t come close, more like qantas. Flight from Hong Kong to Heathrow particularly poor service.

    • -4

What does this even mean ?

There's no service on a flight, other than them occasionally dropping food and drinks off as they walk past. Qantas/Singapore/Cathay all offer refreshments on your journey.

      • +6

Fly with them and you will understand.

CX is not the same as it was before covid because of staff turnover, even in economy class the difference to the CX of 2019 is very noticeable.

        • What issues did you have on the flight?

          • +6

@JuryWheel: No specific issues. 10 flights in economy from 2022-24 and at least 2 flights a year before covid.

Most of the flight attendants are new hires as the previous ones were all let go, so they are less experienced, less efficient.

Also they are now from a mix of Asian countries and on some flights, they don't really click with each other and don't seem to be a team. Previously the vast majority of FAs were Hong Kong natives and always worked well together.

            • @surfingedge: Lmao when you get pressed and you have zero ACTUAL reasons for making said comments so you make up BS.

Same ilk of hong kong changing lmaoooo. You're back in economy whinging about needing a team to hand you a boxed meal and drink smh

            • +6

              @surfingedge: Similar observations to surfingedge.

I fly enough in Cathay economy to hit gold each year… Used to be gold/platinum on Qantas, but they don't fly to/from HK the times I need, so switched to Cathay. Sometimes need to ask two or three times, or ask the cabin manager to get something..

Chatted to the staff, they have about 4 less staff in economy for the smaller planes. The crew are busier and less trained/experienced. Cathay also cut pilot hour requirements (and got rid of a lot of the more experienced pilots). Then ran into hiring problems and not enough simulator hours slots to cross train on newer planes, etc.

Watch the pre-flight safety checks, the staff are tripping and bumping into each other. Making mistakes with the safety pin for the doors. Doesn't happen every flight, but often enough to notice.. Crew didn't notice people with their seat reclined all the way back on take off (this is safety risk for the poor person stuck behind, as they won't be able to easily get out) and had to ask crew to ask passenger in front to put their seat back up, etc.

Mix of languages, so they don't converse with each other and don't work together as a team. Forget landing cards for Australia, etc. Non-native speakers on some flights, so the instructions are butchered (wife is Korean and couldn't make out some of the words during the safety briefing and landing). A lot of them read the translation off their smart phone. In the past, cabin crew could recite the safety briefing from memory. Would be cluster in the event of an emergency, as the majority of the pax won't understand instructions or language…

Pre-covid, used to chat to the staff in the jump seats. Nowadays, they don't talk to each much, probably new and English would be the common language, rather than canto.

Service used to be much better.

Normally sit 59A on the A330…

Flights to/from Incheon and to Sydney variable service, HKG <-> SYD and HKG <-> LHR. Sometimes they give you extra water bottle, or eye goggles or premium economy amenities for FF.

You are paying a premium for a full service carrier. Otherwise, go jetstar or air asia and route via SG.

fwiw, I never eat the meals and try to sleep through on the red-eye flights, so make almost zero work for the crew.

              ymmv.

@jimbo jones: What garbage you just typed out, hong kong for the most part aren't even native english speakers.

You're back in economy, what exactly are you asking for 3 / 4 times a flight?

If you fly enough, do you really need to go through the 'safety briefing'? The one that is delivered by the screen? OR do you require them to point out the exit rows that you should already know if you fly so often.

Never read so much bs in my life.

As someone who frequently flies SG. Took CX to HK last year. No issues.

Just saw your below comments. As long there's no delays, plane comfort is good who cares what nationality the FA's are. Are you okay?

          • +5

@Datsun09: I don't care about where they are from, I'm just saying (as the other guy said) the service in economy is now on par with Qantas

            • +3

@surfingedge: I couldn't care less whether the crew speak a certain language or memorise the safety briefing, lol. Just give me a comfortable seat, decent entertainment system and hand me my meal and drink.

People being wayyy too picky when flying in the pleb cabin.

              • -1

@Guybrush- Threepwood: They make it out as if you need a PHD to microwave food, pour drinks, clean toilets in the air lol.
                It's actually hilarious.

            • @surfingedge: Who cares? you're flying the cheapest option possible being in economy class, what are you expecting?

  • +1

I need glasses. I spent 10 seconds wondering what the hell Cebu Pacific were up to.

  • +1

Don't use your mobile phone while on the street.

  • Flew these flights last year, was great. Thought that these were the normal prices though?

    • Be good to have a normal price to compare them too, airlines get away with charging whatever they want when they want :(

      • +2

Yeah. Oops sorry, I just realised it says return. I remember they were around $1000 one way.

  • How long is it between Melbourne and Hong Kong and then from Hong Kong to London? Does it split it in half? Thanks

  • Sale on the other way around? LHR-SYD?

  • You won't earn points or status if you credit these flights to Qantas.

  • +2

Cathay is OK still - yes it wasn't as good as they used to be, but it's still good enough.
The biggest tip for my fellow ozbargainers - transit @ Hong Kong is not as smooth as Singapore or Taipei. Esp when my flights arrived Hong Kong early in the morning, there were long queues of 100-200 transit passengers waiting for security checks. You need to allow plenty of time (30min?) just to complete the security check. I chatted to a security staff about it, and she said it's because it's the busiest time of the day for them.
Oh. Also that by flying into Hong Kong airport, you are also helping the Hong Kong government to build the third runway :)
