Willi I be able to find snow in May? Looks like Japan has got a fair dump

    • -2

      Wrong hemisphere mate

      • +12

Wrong answer! Plenty of ski resorts in Northern Hemisphere have snow in May, including Northern & mountain areas of Japan.

HOKKAIDO Ski resorts open in May

        Experienced snow there May🌨

        • Any tips on a good " Ozbargain" resort /accom in that area?

Context - 4yr old never seen snow, partner ski's green/ blue runs, Im happy on the board on double blacks…but getting on,.so happy with blue/ black runs. Groomers or tree runs. Not too fussed.

Can not stand the Kuta's of the world (so don't want overly developed), but never been to Japan before so need to be realistic/ reasonably easy to get around .

          • +4

@tunzafun001: Not a snow guy. But love nature.

Highly recommend Shiretoko National Park on the east coast. Spectacular waterfalls into the sea, wild bears, natural hot springs… UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Stayed in the park at Japanese Youth Hostel - isolated, quite cheap, amazing hospitality & fisherman's feasts of local seafood.
A Japanese man celebrated his 13th year holidaying there when I visited. Was the only Foreigner. Family friendly.

Was snow in nearby hills in May. Deer wandered through the snow around the hot springs I spent a lot of time in.

Ice breaker cruises in February, through the sea ice.

            • +1

@INFIDEL: shiretoko is awesome…and at that time of year, a lot of the scenery is more accessible than in deep winter

            • @INFIDEL: Was this early May or late May? We are looking at going in the last week of May

              • @dimple: early May few years ago
Sakura (Cherry blossom) hadn't opened yet
                Enjoy Japan🎏

    • +1

Snow falls in Hokkaido as early as November and continues into May.
Have been there in May - snow ploughs were needed to keep some roads clear. More likely in mountains.

      • +2

This can be true but it will vary a lot
Other things to consider are resort openings and transport. Buses stop the routes to the mountains so you may need to rent a car.
Also if you want to take kids for lessons, those would have stopped.
I was planning a May snow trip and reconsidered

        • Yeah, this is exactly what I'm asking.

There was neck deep snow in NZ into November…but not a single lift spinning.

I wouldn't plan for May, but based on current conditions…there should be snow ..but is there facilities. Also double down with the cherry blossom.

        • +1

Like a lot in Japan, the Japanese only go to resorts, camping, beaches, etc in certain months.
So most public transport, accommodation, stores, etc only operate then.

Stayed for weeks in a beautiful beach area few hours from Tokyo. 1 tiny store served the locals & me. All others (for tourists) were closed off season. Restaurants only operated 2 months a year for Summer.
Only transport was the school bus.

Australian Embassy in Tokyo has their beach house there.
Enjoyed the low stress beach holiday.

Sakura likely should be over by May flights. But it blooms later in cooler areas like Hokkaido & mountains.

    • Depends how fussy you are. You can still find snow for skiing, e.g. in Hakuba Valley in Nagano, however, will be softer/wetter.

      • -2
        • I have 5 snowboards.. but havent touched snow since 2018..

          I'll take anything.

Did a Whistler run in April 2018. It was 31C on the mountain, but still heaps of sloppy snow. It was magnificent.

Could there be anywhere better to have a beer than 31C in the snowfields? Plus they were clearing out all food. So all pub meals were $2.50. But Japan isn't exactly relaxed with their timeframes…so assume unlikely to "keep it open a bit later"?

Anyone booked a redemption flight to Japan just recently. Wonder if there is any availability for Feb?

          • @tunzafun001: Just had a quick look, estimated closing date of May 6, 2025. So guess may not be ideal.

Back in the 2000's usually open at least the first two weeks of May, so as jv pointed out, looks like the timeframes have been shifting.

I personally like to go off-peak to Zermatt but YMMV.

            • @Tiggrrrrr: Need to sell a kidney for a couple of weeks in Zermatt?

Went to Engelberg for a couple of days in 2014, but had savage gastro and didn't get further than the Atco toilets at the bottom of the hill!

Also could have got change from a vending machine in Bitcoin.

              Beautiful place though ..

              • @tunzafun001: You can get an apartment for <$120 a night about 2 -3 mins walk from the lift.
                However food is the killer.

                • @Tiggrrrrr: Can you flick me the details/link to the accom?

Also, what time of year do you think is the best value time to go?

    • +1

I was there 3rd week April last year… In Nagano region … Basically very little snow by then… Only at the top 3rd of the mountains had snow. Snow was slushy by then.

      • Cheers. Different season this year though to be fair. But it might make no difference to lift ops if there is snow or not..ie. NZ. They closed under record snow depth conditions.

        • not school holidays right?

For some reason every person I know last year went Japan, still don't know why, but was very interesting.

Yep 50% more aussie visitors than pre Covid. Really weird. It’s the new Bali lol

AUD V's YEN plus Bogan's found a new place to trash by all reports.

      • +5

Nooo. This comment made my heart sink. Haven't been to Japan for nearly 15 years and was looking forward to a visit.

        • +3

you still should look forward to going back. i definitely saw some people doing the 'if you speak english louder the person who doesn't understand english will understand you' trick and other ignorant behaviour but it wasn't that bad. tbf i tried to avoid some of the more touristy spots when i went so ymmv

          • @lachlantula: Thanks for the comment. So I already avoided Roppongi like the plague back in 2010. Any new areas to add to the list?

            • +3

@snackpacket: If you avoid the big attractions at Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka and/or avoid peak season it's fine. Moderately smaller cities like Kanazawa and Hiroshima are also much less touristed.

            • @snackpacket: Most of Tokyo and Kyoto

            • @snackpacket: Depends what you like. They are sterilizing the fun out of Shibuya. Nakameguro, Kichijoji, Koenji, Sangenjaya, are all good West Tokyo vibes. Kamakura for good beach side + temple experience.

        • +7

Tokyo is too big to get Bogan smashed, but I would avoid some places simply because of overall tourist density.

          • @philotex: Going somewhere as a tourist but trying not to be a tourist and avoiding other tourist. Makes sense.

            • @TightAl: Without getting caught up on the title "tourist", if you are worried about crowds or bogans, avoid the most common attractions.

              • @philotex: If it's not an attraction, why would you be going? Crazy suggestion.

      • +2

Partly courtesy of this bogan airline running sales like this one. Great price but brings a different tourist set for sure.

      • +2

Sorry to hear the bogans found it, my first visit was 17 years ago, less boganised then and one of my favourite destinations when I visited at the time.

        • -5

disrespectful hooligons go Japan to harassing polite Japanese, especially the dress art women, they’re not meant to have their photo taken you racist fcks!

        • +3

4 million tourists a year back then compared to 37m last year.

I did a high school exchange from 1999 to 2003 and stuck around a few more years to work and there were hardly any tourists there. I was the only white guy in my city for the most part, many of the kids never having actually talked to one before.

As I went back over the years I did see more and more. Went back last year for the first time since COVID hit and oh my gosh what an awful experience the touristy areas are. My host family live in Nara and they were complaining about how bad it was, and it definitely was. When you get out of those areas though it isn't so bad but every bullet train is packed now, every city train is awful and there are a lot of rude tourists.

          • +1

@Cyphar: Sorry to hear this. I feel very lucky to have visited when I did. I'm a pretty passionate landscape photographer so next time I go I'll probably make sure to visit areas away from all of this to re-discover the magic.

          • +4

@Cyphar: Similar experience. The awful tourist problem in Japan is not related to Australian's though, it's the Chinese tourists. They have appalling manners, hygiene standards and attitudes towards the locals. Thankfully Japanese authorities and business owners don't put up with unemployed/influencer behaviour AT ALL and will end their trips early for showing disrespect.

            • -1

@BargainHunter9876543: Lol stop making up nonsense.

Glorifying the japanese as if they are the beacons of all these different standards.

Meanwhile the reality in japan is far from that.

              • @TightAl: Thanks for letting us know you've never been to Japan before.

                • -1

@BargainHunter9876543: Been there 3 times in the last 2 years but thanks.
Is that like why they have woman only carriages? How about the debauchery that is Shibuya?
                  You keep reading LonelyPlanet bud.

      • +2

I went last year in may and found all of the aussies I came across to be really respectful and quiet. Mainland Chinese folk on their guided tours were a completely different ball game though, but that is just how they're used to life I 'pose.

        • +1

I’ve seen more disgusting behaviour of whiteys instagram reels, keep trying 😂

          • -1

@HangryCakeStore: Exactly lol, I'd love to know what can these 'mainland chinese folk' do during a guided tour that's a different 'ball game'.

    • +24

JAL, ANA and QANTAS all had sales which had seemingly dried up, not that interesting.

I did Qantas direct return for $900. These Jetstar sales, if you want less baggage and the same perks end up being about $750 return (with free return leg). I'd rather pay $150 more and go direct.

      • +1

If you get in early, you can do return with luggage for $400-450 depending how picky you are with dates. Have done it the last two years, and only one of the 4 legs was not direct. Obviously depends where you're headed from, but its really hard to argue with that price if you are able to be so flexible.

        • Are you in Cairns?

          • @mecusherb: Brisbane. 2024 flights were Brisbane > Tokyo and then Tokyo > Cairns > Brisbane.
2025 flights (booked in their last sale for later in the year) are Brisbane > Osaka and Osaka > Brisbane.

            • @Juicy Goblin: Yeah I was eyeing off the Melb Tokyo route - 20kg baggage and standard perks with Qantas FF points was about $750.

It's still a good deal but if I can afford not to be on a jetstar flight for that long I'll take it.

              • @mecusherb: We paid $550 return with 20kg Sep 25

      • Or go with carry on only, I managed it for a 2 week trip to Japan in Oct/Nov 2024.

      • +1

I just got 2 adults and 2 child tickets for $2044 including 2 x 20kg (in total, not per person), and including seat selection. Just missing meals, as we found the last couple of flights we never ate the food especially on the overnight flights.

        • I probably should have stated I'm in Melbourne which could be the most expensive location to fly out from.

        • We did 2 adults + 1 child direct return Brisbane-Osaka last June for $855. No luggage, no meals, no entertainment. Now that was an OzBargain!

    • Yeah same.

Felt like half of my colleagues took three weeks for Japan, including myself.

      • +7

Like Skyrim with guns ah comment

        • -2

          ‘Ah comment’

Korea’s a good place to visit but is very different to Japan.

In the past 15 years been to Japan 3 times and Korea once.

Between the two, I’d go to Japan next before Korea.

      • +1

        Lmao that's a stretch

      • +5

I'd say they are similar but Japan has a lot more to do in my opinion. I definitely prefer Japan. Source: been to Korea 5 times and Japan 4 times.

    • Exchange rates. Dirt cheap.

    • Japan is the new Bali, its where all the cashed up bogans go now.

    • Yen was small, bogans done with Bali. Social media hype. I've been pre-covid and couldn't imagine what the lines would be like post-Covid considering even before there were people everywhere

    • -2

Worse ones are those disrespectful hooligons go Japan to harassing polite Japanese, especially the dress art women, they’re not meant to have their photo taken you racist fcks!

  • +5

When I lived in Cairns I did this nearly each year great deal and great country.

  • +7

Anyone knows if Japanese airlines had sales in the same period when Jestar had this kind of sale ? Would much prefer Japanese airlines.

    • +2

They go on sale but it won’t be 400 dollars return. Average is around 1200 return. Sale might be 800 to 1199.

      • +6

Might include a direct flight with baggage and meals though. I'd much rather that for basically the same price

        • +2

Exactly my thought ! I think for the quality of the airline and the frills we get, I really don't mind paying the above price range if it is for November which is the month I prefer.

          • +2

@sistermay: I think that time period is great. I went early December and there was no rain, you could see Fuji and it was 16 degrees basically every day.

            • +1

@mecusherb: Fast forward a few weeks later and it was 0c at 0800 in Fujiyoshida 5 days before Christmas. Clear crisp skies though. Loved it.

        • +1

Also better service, very friendly staff

        • 1200 return include baggage and meals? I mean with jetstar if you add in check-in max you should be paying is 600 odd, so wouldnt really say basically the same price…

      • +2

And the Japanese airlines only fly out of Sydney (ANA & JAL), Melbourne (JAL) and Perth (ANA).
