Ooft, booked Qantas $1000 return in November. Ah well always something better that comes along unfortunately haha.

    • +37

Hey at least it won’t get canceled last minute

      • +1

Haha, thats definitely some good peace of mind 😂

      • +1

i've flown Jetstar to Japan 3 times and never a cancellation

        • +4

          It’s a joke skip

        • +2

I've been Jetstar to Tasmania 3 times, twice it was delayed by 4+ hours once they bumped me as the flight was cancelled. Some win some don't.

        • lucky you, it's 1 for 1 for me lol

    • +22

$1000 is still a great price. I wouldn't think twice about it at that price! Plus you get nicer comforts with Qantas, whereas Jetstar would be +$20 for various things like seat selection, food, luggage Etc.

        life vest, oxygen mask, …

        • -4

Contrary to popular belief, regardless of whether its a low-cost or full-service carrier, in Australia they are all bound by the same regulations and are required to carry the same equipment.

CASR Part 121 Manual of Standards:

          11.40 - Supplemental oxygen - pressurised aeroplanes

"A pressurised aeroplane operated at a pressure altitude above 10 000 ft (a relevant aeroplane) must be fitted with, or carry, supplemental oxygen equipment capable of storing and dispensing supplemental oxygen to crew members and passengers."

11.59 - Life jacket carriage requirements

"When the aeroplane begins the flight, it must carry the following:

          (a) for each infant on board—a life jacket, or another equally effective flotation device, that may have a whistle;

          (b) for each other person on board—a life jacket that must have a whistle."

      • Fair point! Probably about $300 more with Qantas but as you said they're a bit more comfy.

        • Not necessarily. I'd be surprised if most would spend $300 on food with Jetstar. Food for thought? Perhaps ;)

      • +13

        my preferences;
        1. JAL or ANA direct into HND
        2. CX via HKG, or SQ via SIN into NRT or KIX
        3. QF direct,
        4. Jetstar

        • +3

Yeah HND is arguably a much better airport, including its location.

        • SQ and CX also fly to HND

          I'd have CX/SQ to HND/KIX as #2 then CX/SQ to NRT as #2.5

Don't forget OKA as well. Bit trickier to get to but well worth it.

      • Luggage (international to Japan) is apparently $70+ per leg now according to a friend

    • +6

I did the same thing. However my flight is going direct from Melbourne and most of these Jetstar flights have Cairns and or Syd/Cairns stop overs. You'd have to pay for baggage and who knows what else. Still probably save a little bit of coin but not enough to make it absolutely worth it

      • Mine is direct also, pretty nice not having any stop overs i suppose!

  • Do you have to get the Club Jetstar membership for every person in your family who is flying with you?

    • +5

No. Only 1 person needs to have it.

      • Thanks

      • what if your not technically family?

        • +4

Doesn't matter so long as the account holder is on the booking.

  • +1

Dates I was looking at appear to be about $300 extra for starter plus (incl 20kg baggage). In total it’s coming out about $821 return for Melb, decent…

    • +4

if you just want baggage, it's better to just buy the starter fare and add the baggage separately.

      • How much extra is baggage, or does it fluctuate?

          • @CCDee: Thanks! Assuming this list is per flight?

            • @snoopydoop: correct. I don't believe you get baggage free on your return flight.
              Only the airfare is free.

              • @CCDee: Correct, have to pay per flight.

Also if you're travelling with multiple people, work out if everyone needs baggage or if you can combine to save $.

The next fare up was $73/pp, each way - so an additional $146/ea (does give you food and choosing a seat though). 1 piece of checked in luggage cost an additional $43 each way for the flights I selected.

16 hour trip..do they even serve a meal?

    • -2

      They serve 2

      • -2

Is this actually true? I kind of doubt it

Edit : based on a little research this is absolutely false, no meal is included

        • +2

          Is this actually true?

          It is

          I kind of doubt it

Maybe you could fly and see what happens?

based on a little research this is absolutely false

          No it isn't

          no meal is included

Included for free in the ticket price?
          I never said that

          You asked if

do they even serve a meal

          Which they do

    • +3

      16 hours from where?

    • +9

Yeah I always thought Japan should move closer to us.

      • +19

        They tried.

        • +10

          And won a Darwin award.

  • +16

Spend the extra and go ANA or your trip will probably start badly

    • +1

      ^

    • +10

Yeah, jetstar is jetstar after all. Qantas flies the antique A330s. If heading to Japan, pick a Japanese airline.

      • +5

Yeah I will be booking JAL or ANA for my trip, not worth the pain.

    • And end badly too - I got screwed in both directions back in 2015

      • +3

things have changed.. but screwing by jetstar never will

      • Mile High Club!

    • Only if they fly from Brisbane, I will book any Japanese airlines over this even it costs more !

    • +1

Recently booked on ANA, it's like $2000-3000 return for economy seats most of the way to the end of this year. But the plane will actually go and will land in central Tokyo, so the risk of Jetstar is just not worth it to me.

        • Yeah good luck getting flights you actually want on specific dates on those prices. I needed to travel September/October and there was nothing close to those prices even with a bit of date flexibility. Those sales appear to be just ANA trying to fill planes at unpopular times.

      • If you're willing to layover you can get it a heap cheaper with another premium airline.

I just booked CI economy to Okinawa (cos I love that place) and SQ business home from KIX, for $2300 return, in school holidays.

I'll take lie flat business with a layover over direct economy if there's no material price difference. But others may have a different view.

        • Yeah there are definitely good prices via Malaysia but I guess it depends what your time is worth and whether you have kids with you.

    • +2

Extra = literally 3x as much (if not more). No thanks.

I have flown to Tokyo on one of these Jetstar deals before and it was fine, with no major delays.

  • +2

Yeh it's cheap, but it's jetstar….. You get what you pay for.

    • -5

No meals and alcohol for 10 hours kills the deal for me

      • +17

If you can't deal with a plane trip without getting free alcohol you've got bigger problems

      • -1

Somebody above said you get 2 meals

        • +3

You do, if you pay for them. There are two meal services each way but all food is paid in economy.

    • Often less ;)

    • And the seat space is soooo crowded

  • Are all return flights avaliable or only certain flights avaliable for free?

    • I'd like to know this too? Also will it be shown as return fee or deducted at the last minute when you check out?

Here's an example. Looks like certain flights are free. Others might be heavily discounted.

    • In my situation (BNE <> KIX, 2025), all the dates return were free.

  • +1

Booked 19 April - 4th May (arriving 5th) - Easter Monday/Anzac day public holidays included… $755 for 2 people - no luggage/food, etc… Upgraded seats to exit row (legroom/sleep!) for overnight leg back from Osaka to Cairns for an extra $80… $835 all up…. hopefully can fit enough warm clothes in to the 7kg, otherwise additional luggage…

    • -5

Mate, can u check dates adl to osaka around early to mid April 2025, are there any good prices?

    • +3

Shouldn't need too much as it is coming into Spring. We went this year in May (1st we arrived) and most of the time it was just a jumper to keep warm. Also there is plenty of 2nd hand/thrift stores around Japan you could pick up extra clothing if you need it for dirt cheap. Huge range of jackets etc when we were looking around them. Some as low as 100 yen.

Looking to go back in Feb next year.. Now that is going to be colder :)

    • I did Japan this May with a 5.5kg carry on only.

Wear your heaviest clothes on the plane and be prepared to do laundry every four days or so. Japan doesn't really get going until 11am so just throw a load on before breakfast. Japanese hotels also provide most toiletries so no need to bring much on that front.

Carry on only makes transiting Japan an absolute dream compared to hauling a massive suitcase up and down stairs and across town.

    • Wondering how this is possible?? I have so many issues booking these free flights as everytime I look it is just too complicated and the flights never show up as discounted, so I just give up and never end up taking a holiday. Everything I'm seeing on the website has an end date of 14 april which is right at the beginning of school holidays, yet you're saying you got the free fare during school holidays?

This is a link to a screenshot from my phone showing these dates aren't available.
      https://i.postimg.cc/BvkbvDWr/Screenshot-20240806-071823-Chr…

      • I searched for the flights just before the sale started at midday yesterday with the specific Easter dates in mind, and when I refreshed the page on the open search the free returns were available with the 19th being the cheapest outgoing date - was looking for 18th and before for the Friday but $100+ more per person… This seemed like the best deal, although probably should have booked additional carry-on luggage in hindsight as it appears to have been cheaper…

        • Ok looks like there was limited seats and all booked out due to easter school holidays. Thanks for confirming.

  • I have never been to japan before. Would it be worth the time and money getting the train to Tokyo and return?
I'm thinking I could explore Osaka region and visit Tokyo another time because the bullet train costs almost as much as the international flights.

    • Tokyo is a must! I went for 14 days and spent half of that in Tokyo and scattered the rest across a couple other cities.

    • +2

yup, doing Tokyo another time is fine. There’s plenty to do down near Osaka/kyoto/hiroshima.

    • +2

It depends on how many days you plan to go. If more than 10 days then you can you visit Tokyo and experience the bullet train as well. There is plenty to do and see in and around Osaka (including Kyoto) so you can easily keep the trip localised than to make a round trip to Tokyo.

    • Get a flight into Tokyo another time

    • +3

Tokyo is a world in and of itself, you could spend weeks enjoying it. So it’s definitely worth a visit. A few days would be the minimum sojourn I’d make from Osaka. Osaka was quite cool, if not pretty in my opinion. I haven’t been on the Shinkansen for the same reason as you - cost, but factor in you go from city centre to city centre, avoiding airport hassle and cost and get beautiful scenery and a cool experience. You can take non-bullet trains for cheaper too I imagine.

  • +1

Of course they have a sale one day after I book a flight via Singapore airlines for 780 lol.

    • +13

Would pay the premium for Singapore Airlines tbh.

    • +2

yeah, that's totally worth it considering jetstar might cancel your flights + baggage!

    • +2

I would far prefer to book your flight with Singapore Airlines than with Jetstar. Better service, less cancellations, less BS.

    • +1

I'd do SQ at that price every single time and it's not even a remotely close decision

    • +1

      You won here

    • I wouldn't worry, like usual with these free flights the sizzle is better than the sausage. School holidays are all not listed in the sale.

  • +4

Thanks - 4 people (3 adults, 1 child) with choosing seats and some baggage, came to $411/ea.

I've been to Japan quite a few times due to these sales and always say I'll go elsewhere in the future, but these sales (and how awesome the country is) keep luring me back!

  • +9

Just keep in mind, 1AUD=93JPY now.
fall from 109JPY a month ago

    • Wow sharp decline. What's the reason?

      • +1

JPY sold too much based on difference of internet rate.
But recently Japanese official rate went up and expected one more time in this year.

        1AUD=91JPY NOW

    • Damn. That's a sharp rebound.

    • I’m hoping by next March it’s back to 100JPY. But too hard to tell. Flights are already booked though so it will be whatever it will be.

      • The RBA isn't going to increase interest rates, if anything they will decrease. AUD isn't going up anytime soon. Won't make too much difference though, enjoy the holidays!

  • -3

so annoying that jetstar doesn't do multi city flights…..

    • +5

let me guess, you also want free upgrade to first class. maybe even sit on the pilots lap.

mate, its jetstar. i would only fly jetstar domestic, i need qantas for international flights.

      • and Kaley Cuoco is the flight attendant
