[Kogan First] Steam Deck 64GB $849, 256GB $999, 512GB $1199 Delivered @ Kogan

2970

Kogan are selling all variants of the Steam Deck. Appears to be the first major Australian retailer to sell the Steam Deck though there are other marketplace sellers if you want to roll the dice on warranty. Press Start has a roundup of some cheaper alternatives here. The 256GB price is approximately $100 more expensive than a VPN/US card/post forwarding solution that works out to $891.25 AUD based on Shipito (Oregon tax-free) and Mastercard exchange rates. That $100 might be worth it for people who want Australian warranty and to avoid the complexities of shipping it yourself (your mileage with Kogan warranty may vary). Also keep in mind the extensive self-repair options.

If you are holding out for a local stockist, bets are EB will stock it with similar price to the US (based on Valve index sales) though there has been no announcement. Also the AUD is expected to climb against the USD this year.

I think the 64gb version is the bargain:
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/tech-tack-valve-steam-deck-64gb…
$823 + ~$100 for a 1tb SSD and you're laughing. No point in the 256gb,but maybe the 512gb if you want the matte screen.

    • +19

this is a 3rd party seller with probably no Australian warranty. The correct link would be this for $859

      • How can you tell?

        • +6

"Sold by Tech Tack" on the right hand side.

Kogan stuff has "Sold by Kogan.com".

          • @freefall101: Its probably just better to drop ship the Steam Deck as it only costs USD $399… converts to about AUD $557 at todays rate…

      • +28

You're remembering incorrectly. It absolutely does.

        • +2

Neat! Not sure where I read that then, but that's good news!

      • +4

Based on my research, it seems all variants can accept nvme m.2 2230 (single sided only due to tight space) ssd.

      • It does, I think the downgrade on the 64gb version is the screen coating or something along those lines.

        • +4

It appears only the 512gb version gets the fancy screen coating too. I think I got confused on the 64gb version's storage being way slower eMMC over an SSD, but if you're replacing it with an NVME SSD, it shouldnt be an issue

          • @Aildaris: Yes, the anti-glare/reflection is definitely worth it as it when used outside from personal experience. I've been daily driving it for the last 6 months to and from work via tram and train and definitely helps.

          • @Aildaris: When I got my 64gb from kogan it came with this: https://imgur.com/QCB1Rl0

Not sure if you can still classify that as a 64gb eMMC storage.

      • +2

Hey it does not have an extra SSD slot but the Deck accepts NVMe m.2 2230 which is mostly used in ultrabook and Microsoft Surface laptops. It does however have SD slot which supports up to 2TB.

The usual combo for 64GB owner would be:

        1. Replace the existing 64GB SSD with 256GB or 512GB. You can even replace it with up to 4TB SSD but imo it's an overkill. Imo 256GB plus 1TB SD card is the sweet spot. Personally I got a 512GB SSD replaced the old 64GB one and got a few SD cards here and there. Good thing about the Deck is the capacity to hotswap the SD cards so you should be covered there with multiple cards.
        2. Keep the 64GB SSD and invest in a 1TB SD card. Only problem with this is that you must keep game installed mostly on the SD card because if the internal storage in the Deck is full it could enter bootloop.

You can also dualboot the Deck with both Steam OS and Microsoft Windows 10/11. Pretty handy if you plan on playing games with online DRM.

      ~$100 for a 1tb SSD

      More like $300+

      • +9

Yea. The form factor for the steam deck SSDs is 2230 iirc, which are pretty rare and anything with decent capacity has been snapped up for the steamdecks. You can find 256GB 2230s for cheap still.

      • +3

Mine was $190 AU shipped from Alibaba and works perfectly.
This one. Just get to checkout to see actual price including taxes etc.

      • +2

Yeah, $250 on Amazon or if you're trying to save money (don't buy a steam deck) there are used 512gb ones on ebay for ~$75.

        • +10

Geez, I thought you were talking about used 512gb steam decks for a second there

      • +1

should be on its way down soon, Sabrent recently released their 2230 range and Microcenter in the states have their own line (inland). Only a matter of time before we start to see them here (or more like them), I'm sure people can survive with big microsd cards for the time being.

      • Honestly, getting a half descent SD card is a perfectly reasoanable solution. I've got a the 512 variant and nearly all my games on the SD card and its perfectly fine

    • +1

You can't use a normal $100 1tb SSD, you need a 2230 nvme SSD 1tb which costs around $200 ($300+ if you want one from Australia).

      • +8

Just buy the usual one and cut it in half.

You will need to buy double the capacity tho because it'll halve that too!

    • +3

$100? Dreaming unless you want a really slow one…….my 1tb was around $210 from alibaba. I bought the 64 gb, upgraded the internal ssd and bought a 1tb micro sd also.

      • If you're filling the storage with old playstation roms then does it matter what speed it is?

        • Then just go with an SD card :)

      • Does upgrading the ssd void warranty?

        • +2

no, you can easily put the old one back in if you want…..

    • Yeah fair, updated the title to have all models

    • +4

I actually bought this $823 version (and got $15 off via Commbank).

Picking it up today will report back if it’s all good.

Edit - can confirm received a legit version from the 3rd party on Kogan. Everything was sealed and it turned on.

      • how long did post take?

        • +3

Just under 2 weeks - order it on Boxing Day got it today - But AusPost attempted delivery on Friday which I missed.

I imagine would be quicker now the public holidays are past.

      • What 3rd party seller was it?

    • +4

I'm sure there's a matte screen protector out there for the non-matte screens.

    • So there are no any other differences except storage size?

      • +2

The 512GB version gets a matte screen.

And I think the carrying case has a subtle colour variation.

The 64gb also has slower EMMC storage rather than an SSD (but can be upgraded to SSD). That said apparently the load time difference is very minor between Micro SD / SSD / EMMC.

      • 512GB comes with additional anti-glare coating in the actual screen itself which helps a lot when using it outdoors. Removes the need to attach a 3rd party anti-glare screen.

        • Interestingly though a screen protector removes the anti-glare effect, from what I've seen

          • @theguyrules: Daily driving it for the last 6 months now, I would consider you to be really unlucky to break the screen. IMHO, I really don't think a screen protector is required and I normally always put one on every device I get weather its phone or tablet etc.

          • @theguyrules: It probably would - I think the anti glare on the 512GB is from the etched glass (i.e. tiny scratches which defuse outside light sources).

I assume the adhesive on a screen protector would fill those tiny scratches removing the effect.

    • Good luck getting a 1TB 2230 SSD for close to $100

      • +1

I've seen used 256gb 2230 ssds on Ebay go for $20-$30 bucks. That plus a 512gb microsd and you're set

        • That's what I've done. 64GB model with a 256 SSD for $30 and a 512 SD for $70.

    • Does it fit an actual m2 ssd in it?

      • Yes but not the 2280 type it needs a smaller 2230 m2 SSD (which unfortunately isn't as inexpensive or easily available)

        • Cheers! I'm hesitant to order from Kogan is my only concern. How's the performance with yours? When you replace the SSD is it on par with performance of the higher spec decks? Steam says the 512gb model is the fastest but conveniently doesn't provide speeds, just says:

          64 GB eMMC (PCIe Gen 2 x1)
256 GB NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4 or PCIe Gen 3 x2)
          512 GB high-speed NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4 or PCIe Gen 3 x2
          )

I could probably find out with some googling.

          • @Jazza2400: I can’t feel a difference in speeds when playing games or in general console usage after I went from the 64gb to a 512gb Samsung SSD. I’m sure you would see an improvement if you did benchmarks. Also the games off the SSD seem snappier loading compared to the microsd card.

    • +1

I could not wait for it to launch here and paid $1100 on Ebay, so this is definitely a bargain. Its quite easy to chuck in a SSD yourself see https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Steam+Deck+SSD+Replacement/1489…. I used Clonezilla to backup the 64gb SSD and restore on the new SSD using a cheap NVME enclosure.

Its an awesome console I love it. I also use it as a full fledged computer to write code on (using Desktop mode). All you need is a USB-C dock and its like having a mini gaming PC.

  • Any promo codes for any of these sites?

    • I don't think so but if you have access to discounted gift cards it can save quite a bit

Reward Gateway is 5% atm in case anyone has access (Gift Card wiki isn't up to date for Kogan).

        8% at Catch also..

    I’ve pre ordered the Loki max, it’s got a 6800U with RDNA3
    https://www.ayntec.com/pages/loki-max

On paper the 6800U and Radeon 680M should offer superior performance

    • -2

I would be concerned that they could go under and then there goes the support for new titles…

      • +9

        But it runs windows…?
It’s basically a laptop chipset from AMD

        • +1

Can steam os be installed on those?

          • -2

@DDman7: It can run Ubuntu, I’m not sure why you’d want steam OS, which is basically just Linux and proton wrapper.
You would be able to install steam in Ubuntu via snap

            • +15

@[Deactivated]: Because it's made for handheld Linux gaming

              • +2

@theguyrules: To be honest I’d rather run windows and have the full support of games not just what’s proton compatible

                • +3

@[Deactivated]: You can definitely do that with the Deck because Valve has provided drivers, which is nice.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: I haven't tried steam os myself, I had assumed it would be more seamless and probably boot directly into the steam UI as opposed to a standard desktop environment. Or perhaps things like the steam button (which admittedly I don't know what it does) would only work on steam os? I just want to maximise compatibility. And wouldn't running steam through a snap package be slow?

              • -1

@DDman7: I’m actually not sure how steam runs on Linux, just that it can. And Ubuntu is the most supported platform

                • +3

@[Deactivated]: I only care about which platform is most supported by valve themselves on the steam deck itself. If valve decided arch was the way to go on the deck then that's what I want

              • +2

@DDman7: I have a deck and I'm a fan of steamos. You can adjust the screen refresh rate, cap the frame rate, use built in FSR for non supported FSR games. Plus the whole interface is really clean.

Where as windows is horrible for user interface at least on a handheld. The writing is too small, uses more power and resources. I would take steamos over windows on low powered devices

                • +1

@RetroMetro: Is it easy to import non-steam games into SteamOS?

                  • +1

@vash12: yea it's exactly the same as adding non steam games through windows.

                  • @vash12: Essentially its the same as on windows desktop. On steam deck go to desktop mode, open steam and go to "Add Non-Steam Game"
Then just go back into "SteamUI" and play

                • @RetroMetro: All that aside, the convenience of 'pick up and play' with steamOS on the deck is the biggest draw for me. I'd take quick, neat and convenient over anything when it comes to a handheld experience.

    • +1

      How much did you pay?

      • -1

679 Euro directly from steam which is give or take around ~ $1050 AUD - 512GB

        • I think the person is asking how much Z80 paid for the Loki Max.

    • whats the expected ship date?

      • On or before 30th Jan

        • oh damn

        • Don't expect it to be on time. Odin lite still has a back log, and it's been over half a year since release

          • @Wonderfool: The Odin lites are shipping within days of ordering now. There's no backlog Although in saying that Chinese New year is coming so delays are possible.

There were big delays last year though. I'll give you that.

        • +2

I'll bet my next paycheck it misses this. They only just revealed the shell design a couple weeks ago after months of radio silence. They were using a photoshopped Odin for the listing up until then. Check out the subreddit for Odin Lite delays if you want an idea of how likely this will launch on time.

      • Don't trust the ship date. Ayn always late. Their Odin Lite was months overdue. Loki Max has already missed its Q4 2022 estimate and likely will miss Q1 2023 too.

        • dang…

the GPD win max was late by a fair margin too if I remember right…

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Yeah, by 2 months. They met quota with the Chinese units, but changed the estimated date for global market.

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: My wait for the Max was minimal compared to the Odin's!

            • @Orion au: how do you rate your max mate?

I was going to pre-order but pulled it last minute thinking id rather just get a steam deck at a later date and wait for a surface pro deal to update my dated spro 3.

              • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: I love it. It looks like it'd big and clunky, and it would be if you planned to use it out and about, but for at home use it's great. It feels comfortable enough. It's not too heavy for a grown adult. Kids might struggle though. It runs most games from about 2020 or before well enough. Its only gonna be lower frame rates for more recent games though. Emulation is great too.

Downsides are the fans are a bit loud and not very customisable. Battery isn't the best, but the TDP is easy enough to change if you don't need the power, and I usually play at home and plugged in.

I have the original model (2020), not the recent Max 2 for the record. The recent model looks even slicker.

              • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: From everything I've heard (I follow the scene closely) I'd pick the Deck over the win max 2 though

                • @Orion au: Was afraid you would say that - I was in the discord for a while but lost interest

                  • @Jimothy Wongingtons: if you're actively considering a deck, max 2 shouldn't be your choice. The win 4 or aya neo 2 are your only alternatives.

                    • @Wonderfool: I was really only thinking max 2 for 2 birds one stone - as i need a new laptop, the gaming was really more a bonus.

    • Damn this is a pretty decent looking kit. For those that didn't check, it's 775 usd (1125 aud) + shipping. I was personally looking at the GPD WIN 4 for its PS Vita looks/form factor, ALPS sticks, and slide out keyboard. But there's so many handhelds out there now. Onexplayer 2 is practically a switch pc as well.

    • *RDNA2

      • Thanks.. maybe confused it with ZEN3

    • Can the Loki handhelds be used for PS Remote Play? If so, which Loki unit would be sufficient to run PS Remote well?

    • +36

It's alright, it'll condense back into water and settle on the surface, no risk of it going under.
