But can get discounted gift cards.
Food for thought. This or wait for the new models launching this year?
They will certainly be more expensive than this. I would expect them to be in the $1300+ region.
I want just a seamless experience. Is this platform still immature where there is tons of software tinkering to get the best out of handheld pc?
I'd avoid this deal. I got mine a couple months ago for $722 from Amazon (really sub $700 because of discounted gift cards). It's a really good device but wish it had OLED, better battery (I usually kept it plugged in but otherwise, 2-3ish hours), a functional microSD slot and of course, a better processor.
Nah. Battery is the only real issue.
Idk how familar you are with OLED vs non OLED but it is a huge difference (e.g. Switch vs Switch OLED) even on handhelds.
Lenovo Legion Go S is $1299, you really think any of the news ones will be any cheaper?
Legion Go S has the Z2 chip which is slower than the Z1 Extreme chip unless I'm mistaken. It would need to be half price to be a decent deal imo.
You are not it's basically the same as the steam decks chip. You are better off just buying the steam deck.
Wait for the Switch 2. No matter which Steam Deck-like device you get, you'll always wish you were playing Mario Kart 9 instead.
As an ex-Nintendo fanboy I have to give the Switch 2 a pass for now, ask me again in 5 years. I rather use my pc backlog to the maximum with a quick pick up and play with a device like this.
is it true the switch 2 is gonna cost same if not more than a ps5 lol?ftw go mk9 ,it better be a 10 out of 10 game, that will be the biggest game release besides gta6
,
Seems pretty much the same price at a lot of places at the moment.
needs to be sub 600 ATL was 722
these handhelds need to be OLED
Needs to be:
- OLED
- proper D pad, not the circle bs
- 8”
- bigger battery
- easily upgradable SSD
- 32gb ram- hall effect thumb sticks
- hot swappable batteries (dream)
- unlocked Ryzen 395 Max+ (dream)
- 1000nits+ brightness
How would you cool the Ryzen 395 Max+? It can draw up to 5x as many watts as the Z1 Extreme. Odds are it would preform a lot worse in any handheld solution as the cooling will never allow it to show its power. The point of a handheld is a trade off.
@JohnnyB.Cheap: it'd be awesome for the 10mins the battery will last… lol
@scud70: Yeah, it would take a huge battery to make it work but… maybe that’s why hot swappable batteries should be a thing in these handhelds… (:
@Broos: Hehe I think you should go for it … Get some crowd funding going and make one!… Then become a new player in the hand held market …next thing you know Gabe will send his hench men to take you out …😂
So this is probably a dumb question and I should really do a bit of my own research but if you had $899 at hand do you go with this or the 512GB oled steam deck which is the same price? I don't really need either at this point but my intention has always been to pick up the steam deck at some point in the future when forced into doing some long distance travel to justify its purchase.
At this price Steam Deck is better
Steam Deck OLED performs better, and OS is better.
SteamOS will be available for most devices within the next 2 months though, the turns will really table in the next couple of months and I expect a lot of the windows-based handhelds to start performing a lot better as they become more supported. The key issue with Linux and all the distros at the moment are kernel level anti-cheat being unavailable rendering a lot of games useless, rumours are going around about this being worked on by Valve and other developers that focus on Gaming-Distros for Linux but who knows. As for a handheld this is typically fine as most people aren't going to be playing competitive games on it, more food for thought for gaming PC's.
Seeing the position that you're in I'd recommend just waiting a few more months, see what the next gen devices are like (Including Steam Deck 2), see how the handhelds perform with SteamOS vs Windows and go from there.
Steam Deck OLED does not perform better. It has a better OS but it does not have AFMF2 frame generation like on ASUS ROG and other windows handhelds.
Natively, ROG out performs Stead Deck. If SteamOS was AFMF2 compatible, it would be the dream OS but I don't believe it will ever be compatible.
You can also install Bazzite on ROG and it is 99% SteamOS. I had it but went back to windows because of AFMF2, getting 100+ fps is game changing on AAA games.
If you just want to play indies or older titles then Steam Deck is a fine machine, any modern AAA games, the Deck will struggle
I second this as ROG Ally user. Windows 11 is a terrible handheld OS, buggy and battery life is laughable (I play plugged in with a long cable) BUT I put up with it because it has better graphics performance and games compatibility eg. Xbox Games Pass library.
Steam Deck does have many pros too: better console-like experience OS, better ergonomic, better OLED screen (though lower res), better battery life BUT lower graphical performance and worse game compatibility (but as per above, if you're into Indies or older games, you'll be fine).
If OP intends to play during travel, Steam Deck wins by default from a battery life aspect, but you can also extend both devices' battery life with a USB power bank or plug directly to the main on some planes.
As for handheld coming out this year, they're almost certainly going to be more expensive so it's not really an apple to apple comparison. Also, 99.99% confident there's no Steam Deck 2 this year or anytime soon based on Valve's own words.
ooooh shiiiit, I didn't realise it was doing fake frames now, good news for those who want a slightly smoother experience.
Bazzite is also half baked, I have it currently as a dual boot OS on my PC but it's no contender to SteamOS.
Same thing goes regarding the anti-cheat and AFMF2 though, it will happen, eventually, just has to be pushed for, I'm sure if Valve want more market share for their OS they'll push with AMD to work on a solution, it's inevitable, we'll be up to AFMF4 by then but inbetween we'll have DLSS 4 MFG anyway which will work out the box on Linux. The better-looking screen, battery life and actual feel of holding and using the device definitely performs better than the ROG, not sure why you think it's not the case.|
As stated in my original comment. worth waiting.
@Darude Sandstorm: Why would you use bazzite on a desktop PC. That isn't really the use case.
@serpserpserp: Because I literally only use my desktop PC to play games and occasionally browse the web. I have HDMI in the walls so I can easily plug it into my TV to do couch-based games. It’s absolutely the use case, weird uneducated comment.
weird uneducated comment
Strange aggressive comment. 99.999% people don't have HDMI cables running through their walls to play video games. So a very irregular use case.
@serpserpserp: Extremely pedantic and strawman.
Plenty of people plug computers into their tvs (not through a cable run in the wall) and plenty of people only use their pc for games and web browsing (99% of what I use mine for and what I use Bazzite for).I’ve looked online for you to backup my claims and use case and have found this for your review. Please do the needful sir https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1h3BiqZaG8c&pp=ygUaQmF6eml0ZSB…
100+ fps on a handheld is just a waste of power/battery
@askbargain: I mostly play tethered to a power socket or external battery since it's just to use on the sofa/bed, it never leaves the home.
If you want good battery life, deck is the way to go
when you compare the 1% lows on battery the steam deck does out perform it. it gets even better when you compare it to a 7watt profile.
@JigBew: Yeah but the Ally is better according to those suffering sunk cost fallacy.
People thinking fake frames and raw rasterisation is the most important aspect when it comes to a handheld lol.
Thing performs absolutely poorly when you consider having to hold it for 5 hours, the deck you’ll be able to hold for 5 hours easily, the Rog will hurt after an hour and will be on charge at the 2 hour mark so you can at least rest your hands a bit.
Use case is a little diff if you have a dock and want to use it with a monitor, mouse and keyboard, but only slightly.
Does Steamdeck come with a warranty? If it’s broken, is it easy to contact Valve for repairs or refund?
Yes, it is now officially available in Australia.
Even if I had $899, i will still HODL, unless you are so desperate for a handheld right now, just wait till every next gen here first, this ROG Ally got no choice but will sure drop further.
10% off gift cards tomorrow
Lenovo Legion Go S just came out, but I’ll wait for the SteamOS version, which is cheaper and better.

They were previewing it just 2 weeks ago and it's already for sale. Interesting.
Will wait for reviews.
Interesting the the Go S has about 10% lower fps but is 20% cheaper than the Ally X. Really would love to see the Ally X $300 or more cheaper
I cant believe snapdragon 8 elite is more powerfull than amd 780m in z1. Its from synthetic benchmark.
I just thought i will have a s25 ultra and play some light pc game when linux layer thingy will be integrated by someone.
Also it has wonderfully oled sceenCan this play baldur's gate 3
Yeah, I play it on mine
Save and wait for the Switch2 instead?
Can't fault mine it's been great. Always handy having windows.
No issue with your SD card slot? must be late 2024 stock which I guess they made improvement?
Perfect handheld! Playing Doom in bed feels amazing
Have been using mine regularly since the last amazon deal and have had no issues :)
I want steam os
Get this and put bazzite on it then.
Dang I got excited but then realized it was missing an X
If it had an X, it would be an insta buy.
In saying that, this is $700 cheaper than the X.
It still isn't worth it because it's a first gen device. I had one and regardless of whether you pay $1000 or $1, you still get the same atrocious battery life.
I just don't understand the point of something like this if you only get less than an hour of triple A gaming.
A whole $2 cheaper at Officeworks
