[Kogan First] Steam Deck 64GB $849, 256GB $999, 512GB $1199 Delivered @ Kogan

2970

Kogan are selling all variants of the Steam Deck. Appears to be the first major Australian retailer to sell the Steam Deck though there are other marketplace sellers if you want to roll the dice on warranty. Press Start has a roundup of some cheaper alternatives here. The 256GB price is approximately $100 more expensive than a VPN/US card/post forwarding solution that works out to $891.25 AUD based on Shipito (Oregon tax-free) and Mastercard exchange rates. That $100 might be worth it for people who want Australian warranty and to avoid the complexities of shipping it yourself (your mileage with Kogan warranty may vary). Also keep in mind the extensive self-repair options.

If you are holding out for a local stockist, bets are EB will stock it with similar price to the US (based on Valve index sales) though there has been no announcement. Also the AUD is expected to climb against the USD this year.

Takes both , I went 256 because I read shaders are put on the internal storage, everything else can be on sd .

Speeds would be better on internal memory too.

    • Hi @lesher,
Yes, I have the 512GB version and added a 512GB Pro Plus Micro SD Card into it.
The System is natively installed on the NVME. The SD Card essentially reads like an external drive plugged into a PC. When you download a game you get the choice of either putting the download onto the NVME or SD Card. You can also very quickly move the downloaded game from one to the other seamlessly, similar to how its done on a PS5.
I have seen also people utilising multiple Micro SD Cards and just popping them in and out depending on what game they are looking to play. Being steam, people have fairly large game collections and want everything available at hand.

      Hope that helps

      • Where do you get your SD card from? :)

    • Thanks both! I see what's going on now

    • +1

To be clear, memory refers to RAM not persistent storage. Each Steam Deck comes with one storage drive in the M.2 2230 slot. That's the 64/254/512GB in the model name. That's your main drive that the deck runs on. On top of that, you can add a microSD card for more storage of games and other media. You can have both at the same time but the SD card may be a bit slower.

There may be a bit of confusion as people have been talking about putting a high capacity NVMe drive in the M.2 slot. This replaces the already installed drive with a bigger one and re-installes the operating system to the new drive. If tinkering with PC hardware isn't your jam, you don't need to worry about these conversations.

  • Can't wait! It says it is shipped now and I actually got the 600 variant from Kogan. I remember it was like 3am in the morning when I saw 64GB is available for the 600 price.

    • I ordered at 4AM. Just woke up and decided to check out Kogan as I've been eyeing the Steam Deck on it.
My tracking just shows pending. No events yet.

      • same for me on the tracking info

      • Mine says it's already shipped… Although Auspost is not yet updated.

    • Wait you got it for $600/64gb? Damn I was so close getting it for $800 happy to wait to see if lightning strikes twice

      • some people here got the 600 price tag :D it was 4am

it seems we're finally getting impatient enough waiting for valve to get off their ass and release it here themselves. i think i would still rather buy from valve directly, or i guess EB whenever they actually decide to grace us with them since that's who they seem to distribute through here

  • If you’re after a 90 degree usb C to usb C adapter Amazon just sell these ones but add $10 on top

I bought the 1TB one from Expansys AU (really hong kong I think)..

They take the 64GB version, put a WD SN740 1TB NVMe in it, re-flash and send you the unused 64GB card too (not that I have anything to do with it)..

I think it was $1280 all up, and took them about a week to ship it and arrived in 3 days via DHL express..

    • I've been reading about the SN740. Apparently because it's PCI-E Gen 4 SSD, it runs a fair bit hotter.

      • I guess I will find out, been running ok so far and found people on redit who have been using it for 3 months without issue, so far..

Others have said at least one of the officially used cards has the same V and Amp draw (3.3vdc 2.5a), so meh, should work fine (not damage the deck), but maybe drain a little more power than some other options.

        • +1

That's good to hear. All working fine.
Just bought a 256GB Kioxia SSD to replace the stock 64GB.

          • @grizz_li: Where did you buy the ssd? Im thinking of upgrading too

            • +1

@Pelilah: Got it off eBay. Plenty of 256GB ones that I guess most Steam Deck users don't want.

        • BTW got my 256GB SSD. It's a Gen3x4 and it runs hot!
I've got it plugged into a PC with m.2 slot to just check the health of it using CrystalDisk Info and the temperature is 65 degrees Celcius idle. Tried touching it with my fingers and it's as hot as Gen 4 SSDs.
This one supposely only runs at 3.2W.

          • +1

@grizz_li: Thanks for the update. Im going to wait for my Steamdeck to arrive first before i decide on upgrading. I read somewhere on this post about a 1tb ssd off alibaba. Apparently same as the sky hynix ones. ($160 aud shipped)

            • @Pelilah: I've read about lots of ppl on Whirlpool getting one off Alibaba. The only thing is wait time. Can take like a month to get it!

  • Keen to hear others thoughts whether purchasing using a credit card that has purchase protection/extended warranty might give a little more protection should something go wrong?

    • +1

ymmv, best to check the t & c's with your card.

for instance for 28d merchandise protection, part of the form you have to fill out is getting a quote filled out from a licensed repairer…which in Australia is probably none?

  • The listings from VChain Global ECommerce are back in stock, but it looks like they've updated the pricing to be slightly lower than Kogan ($824 for 64GB, $1009 for 256GB).

    • +2

For the negligible price diff I’d rather just go kogan directly

  • Not sure if this has already been answered but will I be able to use my aus steam account on this? or will I need to create a US steam account?

Some research online suggests that it's not region locked but just want to clarify before I pull the trigger.

    • +1

No it’s fine - lifehacker/ kotaku article may be a bit confused with how some people were making fake steam accounts to get around the geo restrictions

  • In an attempt to wait for official AU release, I earlier bought a secondhand Steam Link (device, $40) and I already have a Steam Controller which I had for about 5 years unboxed. I figured the energy of running my gaming PC plus cost for link/controller will be cheaper than paying the inflated (for AU customers) Steam Deck price. Simply connected the Steam Link to my bedroom TV.

However, for the (missed) Dick Smith price and now $800ish for it, it's definitely tempting. $700ish at StockX is even more tempting.

    • I am not sure how they are comparable. How much does it cost to have those games played on the go like you can with a Steam Deck?

      • Don't get me wrong, I want and would prefer to have the Steam Deck - I don't like having my massive PC tower on for simple steam games.

The Steam Link was just my interim alternative for playing on the bedroom TV. I use Steam Link app on my phone for outside the house.

I'm anxiously waiting for the official release of the Steam Deck, but worried I might not make it given the grey imports have dropped in price.

        • When Valve recently released Steam Deck in Asian countries (most likely the reason why these resellers have been able to ship them in volume recently), they announced it months in advance, and took reservations. Given nothing was announced for Australia yet, it will be at least months away if they decide to release it at all. By then the chances are that Steam Deck 2 will be released.

          • @aveeno bb: Steam Deck V2 will absolutely not be released within a few months.

            • @ezz88: Source?

              • @aveeno bb: I mean there's no official word but I tend to agree with the points made in this article:

                www.stuff.tv/features/valve-steam-deck-2-preview-specs-relea…

Particularly the point regarding computers /consoles not updating annually like smart phones.

My personal (uneducated) opinion is sales/demand are still strong. They may be working on a V2 but why release it when the first hasn't even been released in a semi major market like Aus?

                • @ezz88:

                  semi major market

For electronics we are still a relatively small slice in the grand scheme of things…

          • +2

@aveeno bb: Fine…. you and this thread pushed me over the grey-sale line.

Bought 64gb for $770 from Kogan

    • How is it?

  • +1

Kogan Vchain Ordered 7th just for tracking movement on Australia Post to Ready for processing today.

  • +6

Price is now $770.99 but sold by heybattery.

Bought one so we'll see how it goes

    • +1

I bought from Heybattery before (8bitdo controllers and Xiaomi phone), no issues.

      • Just picked up the 256GB for $960, happy with that price.

        Whats the postage timeframe like?

    • +1

      $960 for 256GB as well

    • I also brought the 64GB for $770 from heybattery. Have you had any word from Auspost about yours yet? Mines been stuck on pending since Thursday last week. I don’t even think it’s been shipped?

      • I contacted heybattery on Monday and then it was updated and shipped on Tuesday.

        Their response:

        Thanks for contacting us.

We aim to dispatch all orders within 3-7 working days of the order being placed. Our team is trying their best to handle your order currently, once it leaves the warehouse, we will update the tracking information into the system.

Generally, from the date of dispatch, Standard Delivery Orders might take up to 8-12 business days (after dispatch date) to arrive. Please note that this does not include holidays and weekends.

        • I received a tracking number on Friday from heybattery, but it's still showing as being invalid on the Aramex website. Their seller page on Kogan says they have a warehouse in Melbourne which they ship from, but it's not clear whether this applies to the Steam Deck too.

          • @ozb88: Yes, I read that too about their Melbourne warehouse. I thought 'great! it'll be here in no time and shipped the next day (as they said it would be)'.

Pretty convinced that it's coming from overseas based on the above response/information.

            • +1

@Porker: Most likely it gets shipped from overseas to the Melbourne warehouse and then they onship it to you.

A lot of sellers do this - especially eBay - and sometimes they may even provide an Aus Post tracking number a day or 2 after your place your order.

Problem is that tracking number can be 'Pending' for over a week. Generally what that means is that they've just logged it/printed a label with Aus Post.

They don't attach the label and/or drop it off with Aus Post until your item has arrived with them from overseas.

          • @ozb88: I’m in the exact same boat! I purchased on the 12/1 at about 4pm. I’m still pending. I sent them an email and never got a response, I hope it comes soon!

            • @Sacco07: Just received an update today that it's been picked up by Aramex, so hopefully means should get to me in the next few days.

              • @ozb88: When did you purchase yours? Did they tell you an estimated date?
I just checked mines still pending and they didn’t even respond to the email I sent ahaha!

                • @Sacco07: Purchased mine on 12/1, got the dispatch notification and tracking number on 13/1, tracking number started working just this morning.
I emailed them yesterday and got this response:

Generally, from the date of dispatch, Standard Delivery Orders might take up to 8-12 business days (after dispatch date) to arrive. Please note that this does not include holidays and weekends.

The parcel left the warehouse and was handed to third-party logistics on 1/13. As we use third-party logistics to send the parcel, they need some time to hand it to Aramex, so the tracking info shows as being prepared/pending now. It will take a few days to be updated by the shipping carrier. Please keep an eye on the tracking info for update.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have further questions.

        • Hey mate!
Have you received yours yet or got any updates on arrival time?
They didn’t even respond to my email I sent them 2 days ago

          • @Sacco07: I was provided a shipping tracking on Tuesday 17/1 (5 calendar days after my Thursday 12/1 purchase) as mentioned in my earlier post - there are no updates (yet).

@ozb1986 has got notified of shipping on 13/1/23 so suspect he/she is the one to watch.

@Sacco07 did you email direct or go via the Kogan 'contact seller' item. I went through Contact Seller and Kogan responded saying they forwarded my enquiry to the seller. I think I got a response from the seller very soon after, either that day or the next

            • @Porker: Damn! I'm so impatient and these guys are slow haha!
I purchased on the 12/1 also, was provided with tracking details on the 13/1 and nothing since then.

I purchased through Dick Smith (Heybattery seller), and reached out to them on Wednesday 18/1 at 7am and never heard anything back. It has an option to raise it to a Dick Smith Manager so I might do that then and see if they can get a response, I just want to know a timeframe on when I can expect it. Hoping I can get it within 10-12 working days.

              • @Sacco07: Look at my above post which had a response from heybattery yesterday regarding delivery times. I suspect it'll be the exact same information.

      • Just got my 64GB from heybattery delivered, tracking went straight from picked up last week to on board for delivery this morning with Aramax

        • If you don't mind me asking when did you order? Did it go straight from pending to delivered?

I checked mine today and I'm still at pending, I've been like that since the 13/1 with no other update.

          • @Sacco07: I ordered on the 12/1

Got the message that it had been picked up on the 13/1, but the Aramex website had no details

I contacted them on the 19/1 asking if there were any updates, and they gave the same response as ozb1986

The Aramex tracking updated to picked up later that afternoon (coincidence or not?). The tracking also said expected delivery 20/1

No updates until this morning changed to on-board, and then was delivered shortly after

            • @KeeperX: So weird, mine says its posting through Auspost not Aramex? The postage number no longer works either. Did you buy through Kogan or Dick Smith? I had Dick Smith call me yesterday to advise me that they will be in contact with Heybattery and will have an answer for me today. So far nothing.

Did your one come with no Aus Charger also?

              • @Sacco07: I got mine through Kogan. It also only had the original US charger with an adapter.
The adapter is decently sturdy, so I'm not too concerned about it.

My model also has the delta fan, I haven't played anything too intensive yet to make it spin up a lot so not sure if it will bother me much at this stage.

        • Received mine today as well. Very disappointed with Aramex who just left it at the front door without handing it over.

Sadly heybattery did not provide an AU charger.

          • @ozb88: I too ordered on 12/1, but not shipped until 17/1 where yours was shipped 13/1.

11 days postage is pretty good I guess. I'm just impatient and when for sooo long held off buying telling myself that I didn't need it. Having made the decision to buy, I want it yesterday (from thge time I ordered)!

Been looking at Ayaneo 2 in order to satisfy this itch, but that price..!

  • +1

Price sold by Kogan direct is now $808 for the 64GB version. Couldn't resist anymore and pulled the trigger

    • Ahhh.. I missed this or it wasn't available when I was earlier looking. This would've been the better option albeit slightly more expensive than the $770.

(Better on belief it would be easier to deal with Kogan as opposed to HK seller)

      • Is still there, just scroll down to the far end and select 2 Other offers

  • +1

256 at 1008 now wtf lmao

    • Seems to be which one you click? Price seems to bounce around, but appears to depend on seller

      Still $960 here:

      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/steam-deck-256gb-handheld-porta…

      • Referring to the one sold direct by kogan as per op

    • +1

I've messaged Kogan to see if they will refund the diff but tempted to just cancel and reorder.

      • can you still cancel it? I think i read somewhere the preorders are done first come first serve.. though i'm sure they have dropped the price in a surprsing knee jerk to vchains pricing and maybe having too much stock not allocated yet from article hype?

        • I have a cancel button on my order so I just assumed you could. Anyway they've offered the difference as store credit.

          • @Bliss point: Not ideal but better than nothing

          • @Bliss point: I ordered the 64gb when it was $852, saw it was down to $808 the next day. Tried to hit the cancel order button but wasn't there so I contacted them and asked if they could refund the difference or cancel the order. They gave me the option of either so I just cancelled and reordered.

  • Trying to order a second 256 one for my brother - but i have already cancelled my trial - tried on app but kept giving unspecified error at checkout - turns out its because its forcing me to renew trial.

Is it just a new phone number required or is a new payment method required too?

    • +1

      New payment method, I believe.

      • all good for some reason app has no option for paypal (ios) - but website did , checked out fine AND used my work number instead.

Not sure what im going to do about next time i need a free trial though HAHA

  • +1

2 x 256gb's ordered now through kogan.com (as opposed the other third parties).
Now to start accessory shopping over next few days.

Did anyone else actually order through kogan.com?

Feels like most people either went vchain or heybattery…

    • +1

      I went with Kogan.com

Checked the warranty for both kogan and third parties, kogan seems easier to deal with.

    • -1

I went with Kogan for the marginally better chance of a good warranty experience.

Going to go through them for a microSD card too, to use the Kogan First trial credit to get about $10 off. Planning on rocking the 256GB SSD with a 512GB microSD. I considered buying the 64GB unit and swapping out a higher capacity SSD to save some money, but I think it's better to play it simply considering the warranty situation and wait for way down the line when the Sabrent Rocket 2230s are reasonably in stock.

      • IMO the 256 is really the minimum to be considered for most people unless yeah, you're going to swap out the ssd.

As for SD - havent seen anything too crazy lately price wise.. thinking about getting next capacity up …

        • Why 256gb over 64gb?

Apart from the obvious more storage, but what makes the 256 minimum in your eyes?

Only asking because I have the 64GB (apparently) ordered, and would order another 256 if there is a performance difference, unless the costs for SSD swap were significantly cheaper than buying the outright 256 deck.

          • +2

@Porker: 64 is emmc , which is slower than even SD. i read that shaders and some other files are rendered/stored in the internal memory, between that and any other random system updates I imagine that would fill up quite fast.

its actually very straightforward to swap the hard drive, and $60-$80 for entry level 256gb, and something like $300 for a 1tb if you wanted a beefy upgrade, but i just cbf tbh. I just want a solution that works out of the box.

Besides, Ill have price protection anyway so long term cost at the end Im not too fussed.

            • +2

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Cheers for response - seems I should shop now for at least a 256gb.

I too bought with shopper protection - your earlier response in this thread reminded me of this option, so thanks again.

          • +2

@Porker: 64GB fills up quickly because of the shader cache files. You can use symlinks to get around this, although it does take a bit of tinkering. Using symlinks you can move and redirect the shader cache directories to your SD card. The eMMC is also a bit slower than the SSD when it comes to OS stuff. It's perfectly servicable if you intend to swap out the eMMC to a higher capacity SSD at some stage, though. I believe there was also an update recently that defaulted the Steam OS behaviour to remove old shader cache files when uninstalling a game (previously they wouldn't and so they'd accrue, eventually taking up much more of the limited storage than was necessary).

            • @loinbread: Thanks for the info!

Seems the upgrade is the way to go.

          • @Porker: I ordered the 64gb with the intention of swapping out the emmc for a 512gb ssd. Got one off ebay for just under $100 which makes it overall cheaper than the 256gb model.

            • @vongy: Are you able to share the link for the card?

Had a quick browse and it seems the 2230 is harder than others to come by - prices seems to vary a bit too.

        • Getting a 1TB microSD? I've seen Sandisk ones going for $160 over at Koges (really keen to use that credit). I might have to get one of the A2 cards with the higher write speeds, though, as I play to do a bit of modding which will involve transferring files over from my PC.

          • @loinbread: i havent really looked - maybe 400gb like my switch? Need to check what speeds are available.

Still sitting on a spend $300 get $50 amex offer at umart too I might be able to combine with some other random peripherals i need

          • @loinbread: Thinking the budget 512gb Sandisk sd now prob just on amazon
