As someone who uses the normal steam deck .. I think the legion Go is the one to go because of the better performance. If you don’t want to play the newest AAA games then the Steam Deck is perfect.. but if you want these extra 10-20 frames then the Go is the one to choose

    • And load it with Bazzite or Lenovo’s own SteamOS image once it comes out.

      • I really do suspect being able to get SteamOS will make so many other portable PCs more viable.

    • Warranty and returns can also be part of that evaluation as to why buy a product locally with stores everywhere compared to buying a steamdeck.

  • +4

OP if it helps your decision. I moved from my deck to the z1e Ally with the amazon UK deal a few weeks ago for better performance.

MUCH happier with the z1e performance over the deck. I feel like the deck is starting to struggle a little with some games and the z1e gives that little boost that is needed.

    • Cheers - I think that's put me over the line. I strongly considered the Ally too but the bigger screen for RPGs suits me better. Being unable to physically hold or demo a Deck before buying is a huge bummer.

      • +3

The Deck feels pretty nice to me. Probably the best to hold. Ally is also great even with the more aggressive edge.

To be honest the Go is the worst to hold of the bunch. Besides being heavy, the sides of the controllers sort of dig into your palms depending how you’re holding it.

But the screen is nice and more “immersive”.

      • That's fair enough, I believe the legion go is a better device overall than the ally based off reviews.

The ergonomics of the deck is about the only thing I miss. OLED is a nice to have but not a deal breaker for me. Trackpads in the deck are a great feature (I think the ones on the legion go aren't amazing, happy to be corrected). After discovering gyro aiming for shooting games, I haven't missed the trackpads much.

    • Same experience here. I had both the Ally Z1E and Steam Deck Oled for a while and decided to keep the Ally only. Much more capable device with full native support for Game Pass. And the user experience is smooth once you take some time tweaking and debloating windows.

      • debloating windows

I had to delete Moving Out which was pre-installed. Only about 350MB.

    • I finally got the z1e Ally from amazon UK for $720ish. The amazon US one was a dud aka standard z1.

Pretty happy with it but battery drains quick.

Yep same deal here. I was on the fence for a while and lucky I waited because the Amazon discounted gift arcs brought it down to $650 for me. At this price, it's the obvious choice if perfomance matters.

Yeah it's a shame about the battery life, still need to test mine at 18w with my Anker 737 24000mah powerbank. I tested 30w using it and it's a little over an hour of game play.

I have this, had the Deck and the Ally and for what it’s worth:

    Pros:
    - The screen is great, and the best of the bunch in many ways
    - Controls feel good
    - Trackpad is useful (but not necessary)
    - Price to performance king
    - Software is now decent
    - Windows
    - Can’t go wrong at $900 via eBay

    Cons:
    - It’s bulky
    - Not as ergonomic, especially with a lack of a curve where your palms sit (and the weight)
    - Duck all updates from Lenovo compared to the other devices
    - Screen is actually a portrait tablet, so some games have issues
    - Speakers are inferior to the Ally
    - Windows
    - OK battery life, but it’s no Ally X
    - Go 2 is just around the corner, but the price will be a lot higher than this

  • Seems handheld starts to drop prices now, maybe clearing stocks ready for the gen 2 series release

    • Christmas sales + Go 2 is just around the corner. So yeah, they’re clearing stock.

JB’s stock at a couple of stores I checked was from April. So they might not be moving a lot.

      • you can even see the built date on the box? any difference if they are old stocks?

        • Yeah date is on the box. They made some small changes and improvements. Like a tape near the fan for less noise I think. Case was updated.

By now you should get revised stock, but check the date and maybe avoid 2023 stock which JB also still had.

Neither. I recon now is not a good time to buy a gaming handheld. I’d wait for next gen early next year based on lunar lake and strix point as these look significantly better for both performance and battery life (e.g. https://youtu.be/0lhWgtuqeQ4). Switch 2 is also coming Q1 2025. I know there will always be something better on the horizon, but the next gen are pretty huge improvements and not far off. Current gen are getting bargain binned for a reason…they will get even cheaper. Msi claw is already going for less than 600 bucks.

    • +1

I agree. Only thing to consider will be the price, which will be in Ally X territory.

      • +1

I am hoping Ally X then drops to $999 which is when I'd consider picking it up

        • I’d consider selling the Go if the Ally drops to that. It just feels better in the hand and is more portable.

I love my Go, but it sacrifices ergonomics for other things.

          • @cnut: so its really that bad to grip the Go?

            • @kaikor: Compared to the others, for me, yes. Depends how you hold it too. If you’re reclined back and the weight goes on your palms, it’s uncomfortable after a while.

I never had that with the other devices even after longer sessions.

In the Legion Go 2, you can see they address that by making the sides curved. As they should be.

If you’re seated for example and holding it more horizontal, it’s fine. Since the edges don’t dig into your palm.

unless this drops to ATL again, just get the steam deck oled directly from valve.

    • The steam deck already had 1-2 year old tech when it was released. It's quite outdated now and needs a refresh in the next few years imo.

      • -1

ah i guess thats why the nintendo switch has terrible sales

        • Well, the switch is all but confirmed to be getting an update next year.

Anyway, Nintendo focuses on gameplay unlike graphics on PC handhelds so it's not an apt comparison. Steam Deck is fine for indies and emulation but will struggle more with new AAA games.

          • +1

@Caped Baldy: only thing that annoys me about the deck is me struggling with their gimped version of arch sometimes

  • Hodl. It's been cheaper before, it'll be cheaper again.

This seems alright, but personally I went with a Steam Deck OLED (just purchased yesterday). Ultimately the performance doesn't worry me too much, as I have an RTX 4080 PC that I will just stream from using Sunshine/Moonlight when I want to play AAA games maxxed out at high FPS. The Deck will be mostly an indie gaming, emulation and portable screen/controller for me to sit on the couch to get away from my desk, which I WFH at every day. I couldn't justify the $500 extra for the Ally X, and have had bad experiences with Lenovo laptops in the past that put me off the Legion Go.

My other factors were mostly the HDR OLED screen on the Deck and the comfortability supposedly being better. Also the Deck comes with double the storage at 1TB for only $50 more than this deal.

If you really want to play stuff like CoD: Warzone or something which needs Windows for anti-cheat and you aren't streaming from another PC, then this or the Ally X might be your only options. As far as software, SteamOS is coming to other handhelds soon as another option, so that won't be a point of difference for long.

  • I traded an OLED steam deck for a legion go since about April this year. I can’t fault it tbh, if you know your way around a pc you will have no troubles with this.

But in saying that, as of right now I would wait till the next gen handhelds get released as the improvements will be probably be significant.

  • I got one for $749 from the Lenovo outlet. I love it. You can get a portable monitor to use it as a laptop or a docking station to use it as a desktop. I normally play Genshin Impact, it works fine for me

  • +1

I never get time to play PC games and I keep thinking if I get something like this I will "I'll lay next to my wife in bed at night and play", meanwhile I have the Switch in the drawer with a heap of games I want to play and I never get around to it. I used the same argument with the Switch 😂

    • I just got a Retroid Pocket 5. All I do is play switch games on it. We already have two switch consoles and like 50+ games in the house lol

    • Have to make it a priority

  • I've had the Go for a few weeks now, got it for $780 or so through eBay plus. Wasn't fully sold on it at first but it's grown on me. Lots of guides online to get the performance up, and even there sound is fine after some tweaks.
The selling point for me was the detachable controllers, makes a big difference for the ergonomics. I got a tiny foldable keyboard, and now it works great for keyboard and mouse style games using the right stick in mouse (fps) mode.

    • Ironically the controllers are the least comfortable to use handheld out of any device I’ve tried.

  • This thing is a beast, I picked it up day 1, I love the size of the screen, and performance is great for most AAA games (Indiana Jones being the exceprion). This has been cheaper, I personally would wait for the Legion Go 2 if you're already spending $1. It'll have a somewhat bigger battery and more efficient silicon. The only let down of these handhelds is the battery life and Windows experience.

    • Go 2 will probably be $600 or $700 more than this.
