I had been wondering whether to get one of these or to add to the number of bamboo steamers we have for the growing number of dumpling nights we have. Great timing OP!

bamboo steamers are healthier, this one is made from plastic.

Plant based materials may grow mildew and aflatoxin if not taken care of too!

What's your health concern with a plastic steamer ? Plastics used for cookware are chemically inert, is there a mechanism for it to cause harm ?

        • May release harmful substances under high temp I guess.

          • @mrgeckoz: It's a steamer, it's not going to see over 100c.

              • +2

@SliverFang: There's nothing to heat the steam, so no.

This has an element in the water. The water gets to 100c and turns to steam. If you want superheated steam you have to heat it with something or pressurise it…

If there's some safety issue with a plastic steamer, then let's hear it ! This thread is weird 😁

          • +3

@mrgeckoz: FYI, the page didn’t mention if its BPA free or not. Russell Hobbs steamer from Amazon is marked as BPA free.
Also, power is rate 400-500w, so it will take some time to boil, and only produce limited amount of steam too.

            • @mrgeckoz: Yeah it will take a while. When I use bamboo steamers I boil the water in the kettle first, and just before it boils turn the stove hotplate on, then once boiled empty the kettle into the saucepan. The kettle takes 4 minutes to boil about 1.2L of water and has "1850W to 2200W" on its label. So it would be counterproductive waiting four to six times longer for this device to get up to steam point, then have to walk back to the kitchen to set the food in/on it and start any timer (if it has one) - making it more work than just a saucepan and bamboo trays. And if you put the food in/on before it's producing steam, how on earth do you judge cooking times. e.g. Those white plastic bags of dumplings/dim sims/pork buns/etc at Colesworths have instructions like "steam for 10-12 minutes." Not long enough and they're cold inside, or too long and they turn to saturated mush.

What I wonder is, is there anything this does that bamboo trays don't.

        Comes with free cancer

        • Don't know why your being neged. Some plastics have been shown to leach chemicals when heated that can cause cancers.

  • Thanks op

Sadly this is plastic. Would be ideal if it was glass or steel.

If you want a more robust steamer, then you're at the wrong end of the market !

  • Seems like a great deal, how much are they normally like at kmart and so on

For those that bought or intending to buy …. might be worth looking at Amazon's (ozbargain herd's favourite) to see buyer reviews and maybe make you change mind with purchase.

    • Link ? Cant find

    • Thanks for bringing that to our attention. I was thinking of getting this, but the more I think about it I realise what a pointless waste of money and space it is. First it's an electrical appliance. Saucepans and bamboo steamer trays from the local Asian grocer aren't. This is going to last a few years at most before it dies, and every time it's used it will take a few to several times longer to boil the water than a kettle does which everyone already owns. Unless of course you also use a kettle for this first so the reservoir doesn't run dry, but then what's the point of only using it for the timer, which again is available on everyone's phone. Plus you can buy as many bamboo trays as you like up to the height of your kitchen ceiling (not just three).

      • +1

Ugh just had another thought… washing up the plastic bowls every time. With bamboo trays you just lay some baking paper or foil down, cook, remove liner, then leave them sit out to dry.

  • 3 tier dumpling steamer I guess for $20

  • theyre perfect for frozen dumplings/gyoza from supermarkets and asian grocers

  • Thanks, ordered one.

  • Thanks Op. ordered one.

  • I noticed that people are negging comments about it being plastic. I get it, it's only $19 etc but it's not the only consideration, especially against traditional steaming methods like bamboo steamer baskets. Certain plastics do leach chemicals when heated. These chemicals can cause cancers. (One of many sources: https://www.breastcancer.org/risk/risk-factors/exposure-to-c… ).
At $19 are you putting trust in the maker that they've used particular plastics for the health of their consumers or just ignoring the invisible health risks because you want to? If they're not stating it's bpa free, then it most likely isn't.
Use it, just don't be ignorant about the risks associated with things.
