Thought it'd be a good idea to have a central place where people can discuss, share and talk about anything Black Friday 2022 related!
A lot of Q's I see, I'm gonna answer them to the best of my knowledge.
Is everything cheaper on Black Friday?
No! There is a lot of screaming everywhere where marketing gains the upper hand, but as you know, the loudest voice is not automatically right. Or to put it in OzBargain language: Not every supposed deal is really one and some traders use the general euphoria to push their shopkeepers into the market. It is true that the supply density around Black Friday (i.e. already in the weeks before or partly afterwards) is significantly higher than usual in the year, but of course, this does not relieve us as responsible consumers from our "duty" to take a close look and compare prices. Even during the "black days" research should therefore always be part of the standard repertoire of every bargain hunter so that you do not pay too much in the end. Then it also works with the real deals, which undoubtedly exist (more on that later). Any day can be Black Friday if it's a good enough deal. Black Friday is just another day.
Will product XY be on sale on Black Friday or cheaper? (= Is it worth waiting until Black Friday?)
I see this question a lot. The only thing is: Nobody knows exactly what will be on offer on Black Friday or where an actual best price could result. Hold on. The only thing is: Nobody (except dealbot) knows exactly what will be on offer on Black Friday or where an actual best price could result. No, not even necessarily the shops themselves, because lengthy negotiations ensure that products or prices are often only determined at the last minute. In addition, we are used to such a permanent deal fire here that it can be good, especially through clever combinations (such as offer price + eBay voucher or cashback), that a particularly strong offer arises without a concrete reason.
In this respect, it can be stated that it is not generally worth waiting for Black Friday. If an unusually favourable offer appears year-on-year, it would be like gambling to hope for an even lower price at the end of November. However, if it is an unnecessary luxury instead of everyday necessity, you can certainly take this small risk and prepare accordingly.
What could happen this year?
All information is of course without guarantee.
At least three large traders shoot a large part of their powder before the 20th. November. (Start their sales early)
Increased cashback offerings at Cashrewards and Shopback
Fire TV Stick, Kindle and Amazon devices are reduced in price across retailers
Some mobile phone plan offers (possibly confirmed?)
Apple to offer another one of their Gift Card promotions
JB and TGGs to offer some sort of % off storewide (With the usual exclusions)
A good GC deal from either Coles or Woolies
Dyson to do some sort of epic sale
To be disappointed with the sales and offerings…..oh wait
More Ways to be Black Friday / Cyber Monday ready:
Set a budget
Make a wishlist
Only buy what you need
Price comparison
Don’t go overboard on gifts
Look out for Black Friday voucher codes
Just because a price drops during a Black Friday sale, this doesn't always make something a great deal. Some may not be the bargain they're made out to be…
Take your list of targets and search on OzBargain (using the tag's finder) to see what the best prices have been over the last few months. You can also try using CamelCamelCamel, which lets you search for price history on Amazon as a decent benchmark.
Weigh up the costs of warranties
For example: Retailer A, may offer a TV for $700 with a 1 year warranty but retailer B may over the same TV for $750 but with a 5 year warranty, $50 extra for an extra 4 years' peace of mind could be totally worth it.
Sort out the best way to pay for items from abroad
Some of the best deals come from websites based overseas, such as AliExpress or Amazon US.
If you want to take the best advantage of these, it pays off to sort out a dedicated payment method that charges less or no fees.
Many retailers have a price promise
Many retailers have a price promise i.e you buy say 26th November, if you spot it cheaper within say 30 days, you can claim back the difference. This does differ between each retailer. Some retailers don't have a price promise at all but may do it as a goodwill gesture so worth bearing in mind.
If buying a mobile phone contract
If taking out a contract, factor in the price rises, as this may take you over your budget.
For reference, from the stats post by @neil these are the top 10 most popular deals by votes from November last year. Again, just for reference.
I did see a post on mydealz similar to this one, I felt inspired to make one for OzBargain. Credit to the OP for the Q's and format!
