  • I have a bunch of gift cards with a couple dollars in each of them, all accumulated from buying assorted stuff online/groceries. What do you guys do with the remaining balance left in your cards?

    • +2

      Gift them to me.

What's wrong with using them to split pay for your next transactions?

    • +1

With recent coles gc I just use them all to buy a wish card at woolies. Wish card gc minimum amt is 20 but at least I consolidate them all into 1 gc. Didnt have any issue doing this in my local woolies even at self checkout.

    • Are they expiring soon? If not just keep them, i am sure you will get more values out of almost empty cards than a couple of dollars down the road.

      • You mean for subscription purchases? :)

    • you can put in specific value for Amazon gift card, minimum $1.00

  • Does anyone know if there is 0.52% or 0.51% fees to pay BCC Rates or Urban Utilities bills using sniip? Thanks.

    • Sniip has a 0.85% fee for prepaid gift cards

      • Thank you.

  • I’m just finalising my tax return on the ATO website. Will the amount pre-paid to my account show up after I submit lodge? It doesn’t come up when I chose estimate my tax return.

    • Depends when you prepaid the tax. If you paid in FY23, ie after 1 July 2022 you’ll get it back when you do next years tax return. If you prepaid in FY22 you should get it back now.

    • +1

On the ATO website - Tax - Accounts - Tax Accounts. When you lodge your return you will see that the ATO take account of the prepayments immediately regardless of whether you prepaid before July or not.

    • +3

It appears the card issuer may have blocked ATO ? Have been paying every day for the last 5 days but it’s declined today?

      • +1

I managed to pay ATO yesterday but I can't today.

      • Yes, not working here either. Anyone know a fix?

        • Looks like ATO has been blocked as a payment option by the card issuer. Don't think there is a fix.

      • Yes same experience as everyone. The new Coles prepaid MasterCards was declined by ATO since Tuesday. Luckily I had paid most of my tax bill already. The remaining few I paid with the old purple packaging $250 ones (issued by Indue). Interesting those still worked.

  • +4

found another hacked card today. On the bright side its a $100 as opposed to a $250. But that grand total now is 2 $100 hacked cards

    • If you neg the deal, why did you still buy the cards?
Generally, how long did you hold the cards before its being hacked?
What are you going to do with the hacked cards?

      • The hacked cards are from the June deal. They were compromised in august based on the bank statement. I did not participate in this week's sale.

  • +2

It appears the card issuer may have blocked ATO ? Have been paying every day for the last 5 days but it’s declined today?

    • Same here.

      • Same for me. I've got some of the older and newer expiry cards and both declined today but worked over the weekend.

        • did any of you tried using the card else where - just hoping its a payment gateway issue and ATO is not blocked

          • @SydOzber: I have not. I've logged into the cards and they're still showing full balance but that's it so far.

            • +1

@daanish: Just used a $100 card to pay AGL via Paypal and the transaction went through ok.
So, ATO biller is blocked. Such a trap by Coles !

    • Wise is not working too now.

    • Too many people using it to pay ATO, RIP. Been using it to pay ATO for last 12 months or so…

      • +3

Surely that shouldn’t be a reason not to accept it anymore. Money is money regardless of what card it comes from.

        • +1

Its not ATO blocking - why would they ?
It is Heritage who put a block to stop people from using the card so that they can hold on to our cash for longer.(and also there is a risk of hacking)

          • @SydOzber: That’s even worse. Moving the goal post when a particular merchant is popular. Basically pulling the same stunt as “”ultimate gift cards” when they had the 15% discount.

            • +1

@t25: It said you cannot use it to pay tax.

They didn't move the goal post, they closed a loophole.

              • @shoppe: Fair enough. I couldn't find any reference to not being allowed to pay tax (I was reading the white paper that gets stuck on the card). Might need to go to specsavers to find it.

          • +2

@SydOzber: But on the other hand, people will buy fewer of these cards if they cannot use them to pay ATO. I know I will.

            • @Yola: yeah same :) but any ideas what is the best way to pay other bills or convert to GC ?

One option I was thinking is to buy Costco gift cards. Any idea if surcharge is applied on Aldi gift cards ?

              • @SydOzber: As far as I know, we can still use them at SB to buy discounted GC's and at Colesworth to purchase GC's, especially when on sale. Can add them to Paypal and pay bills or direct to Councils etc. I have used them on the phone or in-person to pay medical bills especially when they do not accept AMEX.

                • @Yola: Oh man. I guess I got lucky in that I was able to use all of it up to pay my hecs/tax bill.

Guess I won't be buying as many next time this occurs again.

    • +1

So heritage bank is pulling an ultimate cards and withdrawing their approval at certain places. Makes me think twice about buying too many the next time they are on special.

    • +2

Not working for Ato anymore it seems.

    • I also just tested using an Activ Visa gift card on the ATO portal and that was declined too, even though I have sufficient balance on it. That is another prepaid gift card issued by Heritage Bank.

I strongly suspect the Vanilla Visa gift card has blocked the ATO portal too, as that is almost identical to the Coles Mastercard gift card…

The OnlyONE Visa gift card (issued by Indue) has been blocking the ATO for a few years now, so I'm not overly surprised by this development (but still rather disappointed).

It makes me wonder whether the Australia Post Gift Card by Mastercard has also blocked the ATO. (That is issued by Heritage Bank as well!)

      • And soon they will also block Sniip ?? If we are all paying ATO via Sniip

        • I don't think the ATO ever allowed you to use prepaid cards to pay off ATO debts via Sniip. I remember when Sniip first became popular on OzBargain, I tested sending payments to the ATO from a Coles Gift Mastercard, but I got an error message.

Btw, I just tested adding a Coles Mastercard gift card to Sniip, and as soon as I attempt to pay an ATO debt, I get an error message:

This biller does not accept this payment method.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Oh wow. Anyone knows another way to use these card to pay ATO ?

            • +1

@yht: Beem It is out of the question, as you cannot add prepaid gift cards to it.

I am not sure about Bill Fairies, as I cannot tell whether they have the ATO as an allowed biller. Their gift vouchers are sold on Prezzee, although you need to pay a 3.3% purchase fee at the time of purchasing their gift vouchers. Their website only says:

Bill Fairies gift vouchers do not pay discretionary fees such as adult services, gambling services or credit card bills.

            • -2

@yht: Convert to Apple gift cards then use those to pay the ATO.

  • +1

Surprisingly the $100 card didn't work at Costco fuel however it worked inside the warehouse.

    • +5

I am not surprised you could not pay for fuel at Costco, as Costco uses automated fuel dispensers, and those are blacklisted by plenty of prepaid Visa/Mastercard gift cards sold at brick and mortar retailers in Australia:

Interestingly, the terms and conditions for the Australia Post Gift Card by Mastercard does not mention whether it actually blacklists automated fuel dispensers…

I’m not entirely sure for the reason that prepaid gift card issuers would block Automated Fuel Dispensers. It could be something to do with the fact that:

      • Mastercard (under section 4.11 of the scheme rules) considers an Automated Fuel Dispenser transaction as a non-face-to-face transaction, and

      • You can easily spend a large amount of money in one go on purchasing fuel, so the prospect of fraud is higher.

      • There are also very specific rules around authorisation charges when you are at an automated fuel dispenser. Section 4.11.1 of the scheme rules outline these rules, and my guess is that prepaid gift card issuers would rather not have to configure their systems to comply with the (honestly) complicated rules just for Automated Fuel Dispensers.

Obviously, the way around this restriction is to pay for your fuel instore in-person with the service station attendant… except for the fact that you cannot do that at Costco (AFAIK, anyway).

      • If my memory is not wrong, I am sure I did use a prepaid Coles MC (Purple packaging issued by Indue) at a Costco before.

        • I was wondering about that prepaid gift card, but I spent a few minutes on Google trying to find the Conditions of Use (and failed), so I left it out of my list.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Doesn't matter about that card since they have been phased out at Coles and replaced with the current Heritage Bank Coles MC GC.

Even if you manage to find a lazy store with the purple Indue packaging, it won't scan at the checkouts.

  • +3

That's annoying I have a stash I was going to use for the ATO

Won't be buying as many of these again now

    • +1

Same here. It's unfortunate but plenty of bills, insurance, things to pay for over the year

  • Has anybody thought that the issuers of the cards are reading this thread and react accordingly to stop people gaming the system?
    Just a thought…

    • -1

100% - These discussions should be kept on a private FB group where no moles are allowed

Buying and using the giftcard in a few days is not making money for Herritage etc

They want people to buy the cards and sit on them for months and/or let them expire

      • +1

Or let them hacked ! They should block the message place for good ! At least block overseas merchant

    • @MadMax If these discussions did not take place how many of us would know how to take advantage of these deals? I would have never imagined I could use these cards to pay my tax. And how is it gaming the system? We are purchasing something that is on sale. Usually, people selling things want to sell as many as possible.

      • Yes I agree with you, but people have been buying hundreds of them and paying off tens of thousands $ of ATO or HECS debt, and they have been boosting about that here. Some have been hiding them in the store. Some have been taking them home unpaid before the promotion started.
Don't get me wrong, I am not against it. Good on them to save a lot on money on their ATO payments, but the issuers had a 5 per person limit so they may see all this as gaming the system and not in line with their intentions.
Probably the idea was to let people buy 5 to get them in the store and buy more stuff. Possibly they relied on some people forgetting or losing the card. Or may be leaving a balance on it and not using it all.

        • -1

Good, next time the average Joe might stand a better chance at getting their hands on some cards.

  • Any idea on how to extract the funds that isn't ATO? Don't want to buy any products if possible

    • Go to officeworks, purchase a Square/Zeller terminal, and send the money to your own account.

      • any surcharge per transaction ?

        • Definitely. Square/Zeller will take a surcharge in the region of 1-2% if I'm not wrong.

          • @t25: That is potentially genius. I wonder if anyone has tried it.

            • @Bdawg: You might get a please explain from your bank if you start pulling in a lot of money.

    • I paid my rates (1 year ahead), water and electricity bills, driver licence (that is not due until end of Nov) in advanced. Probably will try AAMI insurance if they are okay with multiple $250 payment

  • +1

RIP to the fella who purchased nearly 600K worth from the oakleigh store

    • Depends on what he was planning to use them for. Buying a house ?

      • From what the store manager told me, he was using them to pay for his whole familys tax.

      • +1

My builder accepts credit card, albeit with a 1.9% surcharge (seems a bit high).

    • Why RIP?

    • I am pretty sure someone who can purchase 600K of these has other ways to cash them out.

    • +2

I guess he had quite a L.A.R.G.E tax bill.

    • +6

Do you mean he purchased 2,400 cards (if they were worth $250 each)? I find that hard to believe that he could get that many and in one store whats more. Surely an Ozbargain urban myth?

      • Well the store manager was suspended in relation to the sale.

        • +3

Maybe you should stop spreading hearsay, that amount is non sense and as pointed out above it is not physically possible to source that amount of cards and physically process the purchase of that amount of cards due to the time it takes to process the transaction.

          It is totally rubbish.

          • +1

@samehada: Could be possible if U have a gang of family members to raid all other Coles during the promotion, but more likely prior.
Bring all the cards to that particular store where the person knew the store manager so the store manager processed transactions.
Prolly flagged the system hence suspended.

            • @mmd: You need to take into account time it takes to buy 2400pcs as well, even if you go all the store I don't think you can find that many cards. Many stores doesn't have any cards even before the promo.

              • @samehada: I know about these cards frm the last promotion, but they definitely live on the shelf inbetween promotions
Stock is prolly restored and ppl can grab them now for the next sale.
Probably not as attractive now you cant pay ATO bills.
                Maybe it was 240 cards?
Wat bills do ppl get from the ATO? Gst

                • @mmd: GST, income tax instalments

        • So the store manager told you that a customer bought 2,400 cards to pay his whole family's tax bill and then he himself was suspended over it?

          • -4

@capslock: Not exactly, I was discussing with other Coles stores

    • Pics or source? or it never happened.

      • Nah ive got nothing to prove

      • +5

Someone in my friend circle did this many from this promotion.

        • He is crazy!!!

He must have shit of load money lying around. Nonetheless he would have saved easily over $10k.

        • +1

That looks like ~100k, much more manageable than the 600k the other guy was talking about.
If you are willing to drive around and be a little morally questionable, buying 100k on the first couple of days is perfectly doable.
For 600k, I am pretty sure you would need some connection in-store.

        • Nice! Im gonna give that a go next time.

  • +2

    On the little white piece of paper that comes with these cards, section 5 Card Limitations says;

The Card may be used to purchase goods or services everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted as long you do not exceed the available balance on the Card.

So what gives Heritage the right to block transactions to the ATO? Surely the use of the word EVERYWHERE overrides this? Any lawyers care to comment?

    • purchase goods or services

Surely paying ATO is outside of that definition

      • +2

I would have thought not. You pay tax in return for government services.

      • +3

        "goods or services"

    • +2

@SydneySwan I agree. Seems to me that Heritage Bank is shifting goal posts and trying to hang onto our funds for as long as possible.

I wonder if complaining to the AFCA would be any good.
