  • Stupid code? 4 hours min. for it to be activated but 24 hours min. to be able to view the transaction or access via web?

    • Not my experience. I bought some today, used them and viewed the transactions online within 30 minutes.

      • I got some at 9 am and can't view them via the URL. Getting "a system error has occurred. try again later"

        • IP, Browser, etc. issue. Disable all plugins.

Just use it without balance check.

        • Calling for balance check worked for me. They have a weird check while entering details. Something like please enter the 2nd number from 3, 4, 7 and so you enter 4 to continue. May be a scam prevention step

      • Most of it I can use once walk out away from the cashier.

  • +1

Apart from Shopback (which seems to have restricted using these after adding 3 cards) - what other gift card portals allow usage of these cards - specifically looking to purchase Ebay cards with an additional discount?

  • Rip no $100 e-coles on prezze.

  • is there a way to combine all the cards into one single card with larger limit? I am trying to buy something off costco and there is no option to set charge limit individually.

  • -2

Experience in Melbourne. J* * *n the store guy letting me bought more then 5 from the quiet store and even pull out few from service desk for me.
Then I able to look some from rack. J**n suspect me doing some doggy (maybe bring it from outside or staging something). Because he did know that there is no more $250 card on the rack.
Honestly I got all from the rack.

  • Visited 3 more store tonight, none, and none at the service desk

    Bring on Feb…

  • +1

Got lucky and found 3 last minute

    • Assuming $100?

      • +1

Yep, still $5.50 saving and bought with gift card inception

    • +2

      Dont make hackers job easy

      • -1

Hackers can just go to coles and buy the cards and find out?

        • Agreed - this comment only benefits hackers. I suggest you delete it if you know what's good for you.

        • +1

          Not international hackers.
Now they know the numbers and expiry dates turdhead

  • Can anyone please tell me how to use this Mastercard means it is not working as paypass
Or just tap. I was trying to use in domino’s but it ask for pin and there’s just 3 digits pin.

    • You create a 4 Digit Pin the First Time you use it

  • Party is over!

What count did everyone land with?

    $250 x 40 in Brisbane for me.

    • About 5k worth.
Paid coucil fees for a year, recharged utility bills for 6 months , health insurance paid, etc

Will have to time it next month with a credit card offering either 0% off purchaces for over a year or 0% for balance transfers for over 1 year and try a credit limit of 10k plus

    • +1

149 for those thinking im selfish, there was still both cards available tonight, i even restocked the stand a few times.

      • Impressive total. Inception?

        • Mostly, once i realised the car desler would accept them it was a mad rush before it ended

          • @MrrMagic: Nice. About 3k saving plus refund GST if for business use for another 3.75k and then claim 5000km at 0.78c car allowance for more savings

          • @MrrMagic: Nice, so car dealer was happy to swipe 149 cards

          • +1

@MrrMagic: My builder accepts them but 1.98% fee.. boo.

            • @Bdawg: Well if the build or construction cost is $100k, you could save 5.5% ish, which is $5,500++. Just need enough cards.

              • @lilkid28: And if the build was buisness related , thats another $48k saved lol if you are on high tax bracket (CGT rules apply though, but all good if you never intend to sell)

      • Nice, I got about 40

My store also had plenty of 250s left over until i shared which store.

    • 26k worth

  • I paid for 2 x $250 cards. Total $462.60. At the cashier activation for one worked, and the other failed. Note, activation isn't done until after you have paid. They refused to give me a refund, and said that, as it was a 3rd party Gift Card, I needed to ring Coles Customer Care on 1300 304 990. to organise my refund of $231.30 I asked them why they couldn't ring it for me, but they said that I had to do it. They said that there had been other instances of this happening.

    • +3

Coles service desk did the refund for non activated cards on the spot.

      • Same here. 1 GC not activated out of 3 which were paid for with Coles eGC. So supervisor gave me a refund towards my bank credit card. This was on Friday night and the funds showing credited tonight.

      • I had one card that failed to activate. The staff member at the customer service desk just used the credit to put through another card for me rather than refunding.

        • Dammit! It sounds to me like it was beyond their experience at my store and/or easier for them to flick-pass it off. Now phone calls, email photos of both sides of packaging, And card, And receipt. And hopefully a refund :'(

        • There were a number of cards failed to activate during the transaction, the staff used one after another during checkout. At the end, she mixed them up and I ended with only one works after I was home. I had to go back and put the cards there for a few hours before they have time to sort them out. It was not worth the trouble as I have to pay for other's mistake with my time.

    • +1

If it happened in the process of purchase I would have asked for a refund or replacement. You purchased a $250 gift card - which you only get when they activate it. If they have problem activating then you haven't got what you paid for.

  • -1

Wonder if there is a workaround to use these as a buisness expense and thus tax deductable.

    Got to ask my accountant

    • keep us posted

      • +2

Wouldnt want the tax man to close a loophole

    • Unless the card was purchased and paid for as a business expense e.g. on a work credit card then the purchase of the card would be a personal expense. If you choose to use the gift card to pay for deductible expenses it shouldn't affect your ability to claim a tax deduction for the value of the goods or services you purchase with the gift card rather than the cost of the gift card. Remember that you will have receipts/tax invoices for the value of the purchases you make with the gift card i.e. $250 if fully used for tax deductible expenses.

      • That makes sense, what do you think about the GST.. can we get a credit ?

        • If you're asking the question then you're probably not registered for GST. That's fundamental to being able to claim back GST i.e. if not registered then no, you can't claim back GST. If you are registered, then to claim the GST back the vehicle would also have to be for carrying on a business. If it is and the vehicle also gets used for personal purposes then fringe benefits tax will most likely apply.

      • Technically if you buy the gift cards as a reward or bonus for an employee, you can argue that it was a work expense.

It does not have to be from a buisness credit card, as long as you can prove the balance was paid from a the "buisness bank account"

        • The expense of providing the gift card to an employee would probably be tax deductible to the business - but the tax deduction would be for $231.30 i.e. what the business paid for it…. not the $250 value of the gift card. It would also require the business to give the gift card to the employee. And if you provide more than $300 worth of gift cards to the employee in an FBT year then the business would probably have to pay FBT on the value of the benefit. Doing so probably wouldn't be very tax effective.

          • @bean_counter: https://community.ato.gov.au/s/question/a0J9s0000001FM1/p000…

Are gift cards 100% tax-deductible and GST claimable for business if given to contractors or clients as goodwill? If it is, are those gift cards considered as the receiver's taxable income?

            Answer from ATO

Yes. If the gift isn’t classed as entertainment, then it is tax deductible and GST can be claimed.

Thats actually good. Now to stock up next time for some serious tax deductions lol

            • @easternculture: I'm not sure where you are going here. Why are they more attractive as tax-deductible gifts rather for use by you? Given the limited supply of the cards when they are on sale - and the restrictions on the number you can buy - I'd be keeping any I could buy for myself - and personally benefitting from the saving. It's not like you can buy them for your personal use and claim a tax deduction and GST back as well (note - GST only payable on the card fee not the card's value so only getting $0.57 back on $7 fee. It's insignificant in the scheme of things)

              • -1

@bean_counter: If you deal with contractors, then partial payment with gift card because they prefer cash in hand , then claim it as a non entertainment tax deduction.

Could eqsily go through 100k a year of gift cards
Got to ask my tax agent first

                • @easternculture: If you are running a business you get a tax deduction for the payments to contractors anyway.
You appear to be proposing to give gift cards in return for a discount on the declared value of the work i.e. a "cashy". That's tax evasion not tax avoidance i.e. illegal. You don't need gift cards to do that - as I suspect you already know.
Buying 400 x $250 gift cards would be hard to defend in a tax audit - unless you are running a multi-million dollar business using 100's of contractors, which I very much doubt given you are using a tax agent.

          • @bean_counter: Clarification - wouldn't be tax deductible if given to employee and exempt as a fringe benefit because <$300. Would be tax deductible if not exempt from FBT.

        • Work credit card was an example….

  • The main problem moving forward, is how to achieve workable inception. It is more than a bit clunky and slow butying Coles cards and they seem to be closing that avenue bit by bit.

    • Stock up on discounted Coles cards between now and February. Bit risky though in case they block it by February.

      • Yeah thats the thing though, they blocked the regular Coles cards at some point during this promotion, there are few avenues left and you might end up holding a whole lot of unwanted cards come February.
What we really need is something like that old re-loadable Australia Post card that was discussed. Some way to add bit by bit to the total. Right now you always need an equal or higher value amount in your single giftcard to purchase the Coles gift MCs. For example, if you want to buy a $250 Coles gift MCs but hold three $100s there is no way I know via another card to do that. So you always need to purchase 'down'

        • Oh, the good old days of the re-loadable Aus Post cards.
Man, did I do some MS on them. They funded several family world trips.

    • +1

Buy the cards normally. You have few months before the next promo to add them to wise account slowly, eg once a day. You'll lose $0.66 for each $250 card in the process. But from there, you can use your wise card to purchase the next discounted gift cards or just use it to pay your other credit cards.

      • Wise wouldn't let me load the cards up. I also looked up reviews of wise… not pretty. I wouldn't touch them with your pole.

  • This morning my local Aus Post counter staff said these cards can't be used via their counter to pay my council rates. Is that what others have found, or does my local need further "education"?
I came back home and used the card on-line in the council website, but there was a 0.53% cc surcharge ($1.31), meaning $248.69 of the card went to the rates.
I think the better option for me would be to convert them to Woolies eGift cards with my nsw seniors 5% discount. Much better return on investment, by the looks.

    • I used them to pay rates at 2 councils in Victoria on their websites and there was no surcharge.

      • the surcharge will appear on your next bill

    • +1

I think the Aus post staff just making it up. Just ask them to try.

      • I dont think they are willing to take your words.
Just going to another Auspost is a much better and easier way.

    • +1

Paying at the council works for me.

    • Just staff trying to feel important………

    • +5

      Updating my post above…
Went to another local PO today and got the same "I don't think so" type of response. However this time the lady offered to try it and see. Success!
      1. PO scanned rates notice
      2. PO chooses Mastercard option on their computer screen (heard her say "No.12 on list")
      3. PO puts in amount you want to pay
      4. Customer swipes card in eftpos machine
      5. Customer presses "Credit" option on eftpos screen
      6. Customer types in pin number and presses enter.
      7. Transaction should show "Approved".
Note: pin number is any 4-digit number you make up on the spot. Only need to enter it once. As I understand it, if you only partly use the value of the card, you have to remember that pin for future use. In my case, the whole of the value was used in one go so the pin was a once-only number. Hopes this is of help to others.

  • Tried using $100 card this morning to pay my CTP(NRMA) at local PO and didn't work with any of the below options
    (a) Credit selected on the system - Credit/Savings/Cheque on POS
    (b) EFTPOS selected on the system - Savings on POS

ATO as expected didn't have credit option enabled anymore, so can't use these at PO. Using 5 per day each on Easypay and ATO websites.

    • It has been reported by @Joker that they reset every 12 hours.

  • I've used a temporary flybuys card when purchasing these cards as I didn't want Coles to track my multiple purchases using Flybuys.
I've used my main flybuys twice and the points came through however no points on the temporary cards I've used… Anyone else having this issue ?

    • It took about 30 to 36 hours, I got the points after those duration.

  • Anyone having trouble with Shopback? My account says inactive contact support.

  • +1

Good that you can add these to your paypal wallet, very handy.

  • +1

Anyone else having issues adding to ShopBack? I removed 4 old ones from the June promo over 2 days ago (>48 hours). Now when I try to add a new one it won’t let me just says sorry can’t add it.

    • +2

Yes, I had that. You will have to wait a few days. Was 4/5 for me. Maybe faster if you contact them.

      • Thanks. Did you end up contacting them? Just don’t want to waste time on chat if they can’t do anything. Shame it’s such a long cool down. Kicking myself for not adding it first then deleting them as I had a free spot.

    $58.90

  • +6

Thanks to everyone - I managed to buy 159 cards each worth $250!

I paid off my hecs and am hecs free now 😊😊😊

    • +2

      Congrats

    • Were you already planning to pay off the hecs debt

      • +2

I wasn't initially going to pay my hecs off but after forecasting inflation being high for the next few years as well as effectively getting a 7% discount rate by paying via these cards I decided to pay it off via these gift cards.

In addition, as your paying hecs off all at once you can treat it as a better 'risk free return' vs putting money in a saving account that currently generates up to 4% return.

        • Wow, that's over $36k. well done saving that. How long ago did you graduate? How did you use up 159 cards so quickly? I can only use 10 each day to pay the ATO. Is there another way? Getting rid of this debt will help if you apply for any credit.

          • +5

            @Yola: I graduated end of 2019.

I was able to use 20 cards on the government portal per day. The trick is to use 10 cards and recycle every 12 hours. So use 5 on the ATO website and 5 on easy pay government website.

Then exactly after 12 hours you can use another 10 (split between 5 on both of these websites).

            Hope that helps :)

Note: easy pay allows you to also pay 5 cards PER account (e.g. tax account, Hecs account).

I was aggressively using these cards as I didn't want to be hacked (as I have seen others commented on before).

            • +2

              @Mr Joker:

Then exactly after 12 hours you can use another 10

That is helpful. I thought it's per day and was waiting 24 hours.

I was aggressively using these cards as I didn't want to be hacked

Me too. I also placed some on hold by calling them and it was quite easy to do.

Well done on saving that much in a short amount of time. It bodes well for your future.

            • +3

@Mr Joker: 12 hours is a game changer. I am doing the same in paying off my HECS with these cards for the same reasons you gave - predicted inflation of 7% and a 7% discount is basically a 14% swing my way by paying down the HECS debt now. I've been doing it at 24 hour intervals as well but with 12, I can be finished by end of the weekend.

              • +3

@daanish: Glad to be of assistance and giving back to the Ozbargain community!

              • @daanish: When does the 7% hike start?

                • +1

@impoze: The next indexation of HECS debts would be on 01 Jun 2023.

                • +1

@impoze: The rate hasn't been officially announced or confirmed as yet but whatever it is, it will be applied in 1 June 2023 to the balance of your HECS/HELP debt.

In case you are not aware, HECS/HELP loans have an indexation rate applied on 1 June ever year to ensure the loan keeps up with inflation. Most economists are tipping that inflation will be something around 7% this year in addition to the 3.9% rate applied on 1 June 2022. In the last few years before that the index rate has been very low so it hasn't been worth paying off loans early but with rates rising it may be beneficial for you to pay down your debt before it increases by an estimated 7%.

    • Pics? or it never happened.

  • +7

Also huge shoutout to @WookieMonster for predicting these sales to occur in October. Managed to also get a credit card approced to churn for bonus points and effectively got $850 for free :)

Hopefully your prediction is right for Feb next year for this sale as I'll be doing it again as a true ozbargainer ;)
