Received my t470s. Cosmetic condition is much better than the previous buy at $249 from the same seller, windows 11 pro preinstalled, updated to Aug 2022. Battery health: 1st at 86.9%, 2nd at 60%. Need to update windows 11 pro Oct patch, SSD driver, etc. At the price of $185.07, it is a great deal to me. The seller is very honest to the condition of the laptop, I feel like it's grade A item (except battery life). Hope everyone is happy as well with the t470s received. Cheers.

Assuming the batteries are almost kaput, is it easy to find replacement batteries and if so how much you rkn they would be?

    • +2

I bought one of these from them at $249 10 days ago, battery life about 70%, expecting $50 for a new battery

      • +3

Hmm…what does it mean by screen bruise? Does that mean some Muppet punched the screen and you have dead zones?

        • +3

Mine has no dead zones, the condition is much better than expecting.

        • I think it might be the white pressure marks on the screen. They're usually not visible unless against a white background

        • +6

Screen puncher obviously doesn’t like being called a Muppet

        • +1

          Crypto rage !

      • Buy a genuine, otherwise annoying windows message

      • There's two batteries.
        First one is ~$65
        Second one is ~$70

Second one usually dies first. Expect to replace both within the first 5 years.

Could load on Chrome flex for a cheap Chromebook.

    • +1

If it works that is….. Chrome flex stability/compatibility isn't perfect on many machines….

P.S https://support.google.com/chromeosflex/answer/11513094?hl=e… apparently certified as far this link indicates so fair enough….. :) support ends in 2028….

      • Has worked on every old and obscure machine I've tried it on

    • +1

      But why?
This will do anything a Chromebook does and more.

With exception to very specific scenarios I'd just do a clean Win10 install on this and be done.

    • Cheers, didn't know about chrome flex.

    • Can not use Google app store.

  • +1

i got a couple last time. batteries are about 3-4 hours when using them so not bad.

    FRAYED/WEAR KEYBOARD/TRACKPAD; Minor Cracked casing

Breaks my heart. What kind of sickos abuse Thinkpads like this?

      • +20

That’s just over 1,000 hours. Not that much

        • WORD my man!

          • +25

@Naigrabzo: i told my wife's boyfriend to buy an external keyboard as he's too hard on it

just like he's too hard on my wife

      • +13

        "My cousins friends girlfriend"

        Who?

        • It's the girlfriend of the fellow who had the blue issue.

      • +5

She's a losty. I'm still using my old work laptop, it's on its last leg but for the first 5 years it's been traveling with me all around the world, mind you working 15hrs a day, every single day. The past 4-5 years minimal use daily.

Keys and screen are in perfect nick, the case is scratched up and dinted but to be expected with a 10 year old laptop that's been flogged.

Ur cousins friends, brothers, aunties, newphees girlfriend should work in construction. Specifically Demolition crew 🤣

        • She apparently uses dell. Haven't seen her hands but maybe she is she -hulk. I don't know. I only know the facts. :)

      • +1

Yeah, no. Your cousins friends girlfriend is a maniac.

  • +19

I can deal with wear and tear on the keyboard and casing but "Screen bruise / screen stains" is a no-go for me

    • +1

      Yeah that concerns me…

    • A lot of laptops have been prone to pressure spots on the screen, but its not really as bad as it sounds.
Battery life is the only serious problem. Hopefully.

    • Lol makes your wonder wtf kind of people are out there in society lol

      • It should be a form of domestic violence. If you bruised your gf the police will arrest you but bruise an LCD screen and nobody gives a hoot.

        • if you carry laptop in backpack because you sometimes work from home and have other stuff in the back pack, point pressure on the lid where screen is can cause some issues. usually people don’t care as it’s the work laptop not their own …….or they want a new one and work doesn’t replace unless it’s had a hammering …..

      • We live in a society

        Bottom text

    • the perils of buying used tech shudder

      • It really is a like a box of chocolates - you don't know what you're going to get.
I just don't understand why people don't look after their stuff. Everything I own, I look after it and treat it carefully and it lasts me 10+ years. I can then happily resell to the next owner in full working condition. I guess once you add kids and pets to the equation then this goes downhill.

        • even more now with windows 10 going end of support in a couple of years …..anything older than gen 8 not supported for windows 11…..so will depend what apps you will want to run in the future and how much life you expect from one of these.

great to keep in the car with the cellular for and nicer than using phone for browser or SaaS apps.

          • @garage sale: Pretty sure that doesn't apply to ultrabook CPUs. I think even a 4th gen can run Windows 11, or at least there's a bypass

        • i've looked at heaps of used phones and it amazes me how so many have pock marks and dents from not using a case. and these clowns want top dollar.. yeah nah!

Everything I own, I look after it and treat it carefully

same. gotta look after my stuff to make it last as long as possible 'cos i'm not loaded with cash.
in fact, i've just finished fixing my laptop cooler pad's noisy fan which was driving me insane. and it was so simple - just a dab of sewing machine oil into the spindle and it's back spinning along to a relaxing hum. then i went further and found the previous cooler pad and lubed the fans on that as well so that's a fully working spare i've got on hand and don't have to cough up $20+ for another.

  • +1

Looking for a cheap laptop that can browse internet and play videos will this do the job? Cheers

    • +9

absolutely, I'm using it to reply you now

    • I mean if a laptop doesnt browse internet and play videos then is it really a laptop? Lol

    • It will do fine, like Winman I'm using a similar specced T-470S…

  • +13

Really appreciate the seller being honest about the condition of the laptop.

  • +1

Technically these don't run Windows 11. You can probably force an install but this CPU isn't supported.

    • +6

      Thinkpads are great for Linux.

      • Can confirm, using Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS currently and It works great!

      • But Linux is not great for

    • +1

That criteria is so confusing. Looks more like MS trying to scare people into buying new hardware now that you get free OS update.
I've force upgraded my surface book 2 to W11 and it's all good, really like it.

      • +1

it’s not MS scaring people, security landscape is changing ,driver support for old boards and they decided gen 8 was the cut off based on the general feature set of motherboards and manufactures don’t make drivers for some older chipsets….. worse is people still on office 2010 and 2016 as they are dumping support for some cloud services next year …..

there are lots of non tech people out there and general patching and defender is all they have and MS can’t support every piece of old hardware for drivers and patching.

        • They don't even support all versions of their own surface line devices which are only 2-4 years old. Pixel and Apple are doing a better job.
For eg surface book 2 i5 7x not supported, but i5 8x and i7 are. How stupid is that.

  • Is the RAM upgradeable - free slot?

    • yes, it has soldered ram, plus one DDR4 SO-DIMM socket.

      • +1

I presume it comes with 4GB soldered plus 4GB SODIMM.

        • -1

no, 8+0. so you can have 20gb if you need…

        • Thats the only thing holding me.

          • +1

@4kbargain: sorry my mistake as they said, its 4gb soldered and 4gb sodimm

        • Just adding you can upgrade to at least 36gb of ram = 32+onboard 4….

Source: This post is typed on that configuration :) and Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS

        • Don't be "SO DIMM". He answered the question lol.

    • +3

      Hi it's 4GB soldered and 4GB SODIMM.

      • And it takes upto 16 gb on the slot, so maxes out at 20gb potentially.

        • -1

          It will take at least 36 total….. a.k.a 32+4….

This is what my T-470S has installed….. for some reason it actually came with an upgraded 8+4=12gb when I bought it not long ago….. :)

      • 8G is just enough for windows 10/11, but at least it's dual-channel.

  • +1

Some laptops are more tolerating with 3rd party battery. Not sure about this one. I bought a battery for my Lenovo E450 but after about a month it started to stop charging when a message complained about non genuine battery popped up. For people who don't need to use it while on the road it is still a good deal I think. It might not be for those who wanted to use it on the road.

  • +2

Can make for a good compact low power plex server, provided media is hosted on a nas or other pc

  • +1

Thanks, pulled the trigger. Got it for $184 with some random code eBay provided.

  • I'm using a refurb'd laptop with scuffs and scratches on the inside. Still trying to figure out how they got the inside of the chassis all messed up but left the outside of it in still great condition.

My theory is that they put stuff like stapled papers inside of it and close the lid when they move around, whether it's to and from classes or moving about on the field.

    • +5

If anyone wants to use it as a desktop with an external monitor, the Ultra docks(purchasable on ebay) work great and you don't even need the laptop open to turn it on or off…..

My setup is a 24" monitor, external speakers with dac plus a mechanical keyboard and mouse all plugged into the dock….

When I need portability press the unlock button and lift!

No unplugging accessories and I make less wear on the chassis itself(My laptop was grade A so basically near perfect condition when I bought it.)

      • What do you mean press the button and unlock?
Do you mean it doesn't connect through usb-A or usb-C ?

        • No it's like a mechanical switch. Just google t470s dock and you'll Se the switch on the left hand side of the dock. I still prefer usb c - much easier.

          • @paaj: Yeah, not sure why would you want/advocate for a dead weight once you change laptop. Sorry.

    • Enterprise product, things probably had several techs work on it throughout the years. I buy these more often than I should and its not uncommon to see them in that sort of condition.

  • Dumb question, can this run Diablo 2 resurrected?

    • +1

If it runs at all, it will not run well. This just has integrated graphics

    • +1

It appears (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peM76cNCOnU) that Diablo 2 Resurrected runs poorly (<30 fps) on the Intel HD 520 graphics included on the i7-6600U

  • Raspebrry pi 4 8gb replacement………..2 core, 4 thread and 8gb ram right there….
Does anyone know how many watts it draws from the wall ?

  • Code doesn’t seem to be working for me? Showing as $199.

    • Just checked, still working for me.

    • I had the same with 2 ebay accounts - had to check out as guest to use the code in the end.

  • +2

Cheers….bought another one (although the 1st of these from another company has a faulty trackpad/fingerprint reader - trackpad works but not with the symantec drivers - freezes/jumps around - drop back to microsoft basic mouse drivers and works fine, although missing functionality!) - I had a $25 off code - and whilst shopback doesn't have cash back at the moment, I bought 2 gift cards with $5 cash back each so another saving of $10 brought it down to $164 or so….

  • lol just realised i bought the last one. let's see how it goes

    • Congrats:-)
Let us know how you go. That's a really good price if you get lucky with overall condition

    • Good luck!

    • How you go with the t470s? anything to share? Thanks

      • not delivered yet

      • +2

ex-ANZ lease/property. 4 lentil-size white bruises on screen but all close to edges so not conspicuous. all rubber footers gone. secondary battery dead and removed by seller. sim card release mechanism damaged so had to manually pull the tray out. a few light scratches on bottom surface and lid. still figuring out the fingerprint sensor.

I just received mine yesterday. The scratches on the casing wasn't bad at all, I barely notice them until I tilt it and look against the light. The touchpad got pretty worn-out, some spot are even worn through the frosted coating. The charger come in the box is 45w, it's only just enough for the laptop to run. I plug in my 65w charger to type c port got much higher charging speed. It has two batteries, mine has 77% and 85% capacity left.

    • did u check the battery capacity in lenovo vantage? mine shows 23.5wh design capacity and 16.5 full charge capacity. so i figure it's two thirds of a new one

      • Lenovo Vantage shows that I got 19.51/23.54Wh for my main battery and 18.08/26.06Wh on my aux. If calculate using this set of numbers, my battery health is 82.9% and 69.4%.

        • not bad. my aux is missing altogether and the seller said they had to remove it as it was dead and prevents main one from charging

    • Update: I lower the screen brightness and found two bright spots with size of a pea. It's like someone has poked the screen really mad and left those bruises. Once you looked at them they become pretty obvious, but they don't create a distraction when you're concentrating on the content. Oh and I just found that the left Ctrl is broken. The last owner must have been in a constant state of anger.

    • +1

Mine got 8460/23510 mWh and 16340/26330 mWh - 35.9% and 62% accordingly. About 49.7% in total. The machine itself is in perfect condition.

I checked battery using the method from here: https://www.bruceb.com/2017/04/windows-10-tip-how-to-check-t…

  • anyone got the fingerprint sensor working?

    • me either. unable to install the fingerprint software downloaded from lenovo website for windows 10 x64. Not supporting Windows 11?
