      I don't have a phone…

    • DW Sydracing, at 100Mbps, you're not missing out on anything special.

4G is quite fast enough thanks. What we want is VoLTE instead of being pushed to 3G!
    Also, VoWIFI and smartwatch support.

Of course, as an OzB tightarse, I'm on a 12-month plan, so ineligible. Could be sour grapes?
I've tried Vodafone 5G, which is cheap and fast, but the coverage sucks. Then again, so does their 4G coverage, which is why I'm with a Telstra MVNO :-)

    • So no VoLTE with resellers.
Thats a pain as theres towns with no 3g now (noticed this a year ago) so without VoLTE there is no calls available.

      • With woolies they don't have full network wide access, I think the woolies one probably doesn't actually get any signal in those towns anyway.

Interesting with the 3G shut down approaching that they don't have it.

According to a Woolworths Mobile rep, they’re finally getting it this month.

          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9q6k4xm3?p=435#r71816…

          • @MitchyD1989: I asked Rod over there about 18 month ago when I first noticed some towns had the 3G turned off so you had to have voLTE. Back then he was saying Soon, and reading your link he only mentions 5G , I didn’t read anything about voLTE being available.

        • @Johndoh89, it's more of an issue than that. Telstra have been re-farming some of the 850Mhz spectrum in regional Australia from 3G to 5G, it's resulted in many Woolworths, Aldi etc customers with dropouts and missed calls.

          • @philart: Yep, noticed towns at least 18 months ago with no calling capabilities unless you had voLTE.

          • @philart: What's the speed difference (if any) for 5G 850MHz vs 3G 850MHz?

    • They have an eSim but no VOLTE ???

      • Yep. Esim is appreciated though, since a lot of high-end phones only allow one physical SIM.

As for VoLTE, I can roll my own, by using any number of VoIP apps, but lack of old-school volte is annoying.

        • +1

Best thing about ESIM is that you can load up on many plans and easily switch between, right now I have Optus, Telstra & Vodafone on my phone and can switch between, using different free plans and purchased ones for different tests and stupidity.

I have 2 Felix ESIMS atm.

          ESIM rocks!

          • @checkingthisout: Sounds interesting. Could you give some more details on how you do it?
Are you using iOS or Android?
            Thanks

            • +1

@Averell: I use an iPhone, the iPhone seems to be able to load many ESIM plans into the mobile section, and then you can switch between them within seconds. Making it easy to change between providers. Doesn't take much effort, just sign up and let the provider install the ESIM config.

VoLTE will start rolling out from the 18th October.

Nice. I'm curious if it will fix the weird screeching calls issue I have.

Video recordings are fine, video chat and VoIP services are fine, just phones give the other end huge metallic screeches that I'm told is physically painful.

      • I am wondering whether Coles Mobile offers VoLTE?

        • +1

They started rolling it out in August

  • +3

I'd be tempted - but 4g here sits at 80mbps+ and being limited to 100mbit defeats the purpose?

    • +1

Depending on the location I get over 900mbps uncapped 5G on Telstra.

Of course, elsewhere the 5G is slower than the LTE, which is pretty freaking sad, but you know… Telstra.

      • +2

I mean of course, but I guess I just don't know what you'd reasonably do with that speed apart from Hotspotting your phone or just flexing haha. I do see it being good in the future, but it's just kinda meh until 5G becomes mainstream imo.

      • Telstra wholesale is now capped at 100 or 250Mbps to differ the "premium Telstra network", but with such low data amounts for the cost, you're only using your phone for browsing and 720p videos max, music streaming etc, which all rely on latency more than 900Mbps.

Essentially, 900Mbps is just ridiculous, even 20Mbps on Felix right now is unnoticeable on my phone. I have all three carriers in esims, right next to a tower, can't tell any difference.

You won't notice the difference between 4G 90Mbps and 5G 900Mbps in real world day to day use, but Telstra, Optus & Vodafone sure hope their marketing teams will make you believe it.

        • I definitely can see the difference between 900mbps and 100mbps, especially since a lot of what I do involve large format images and 4k streaming, but go off I guess.

          • +2

@TheRealCJ: I am on Felix unlimited 4G right now. Here's a screen shot of an 8K video via the 20Mbps max it gives, but ok, go off I guess.

You'll need a pretty big plan to handle all that heavy data, the largest that Woolworths has for 5G is 60GB. Which is 8.8 minutes of full use before 0Mbps kicks in.

            https://ibb.co/MSX7j55

          • @TheRealCJ: @TheRealCJ 4K or UHD streaming only requires a max of 25Mbps and that's more normally 15Mbps with the more efficient codecs streamers are increasingly using.

    • +2

I get 160+mbps with 4G on Optus do definately not worth it for me.

      • Highway to the danger zone

  • Voted plus for the part Telstra network

  • What is the point of having "Australia's best 5G network" if you limit it to 100Mbps?

I mean, you get bugger all data, and now you get max 100Mbps.

Telstra wholesale is really starting to take the piss.

I've used all three 5G networks in the last few months, spoiler alert, 4G is fast AF, and the ping is the same.

If the trial was 5G full speeds, sure, but is this a deal?

    • I'm not sure if its actually limited to 100Mbps.

I did a speed test when I noticed the 5G icon on my phone this week and got over 200Mbps down and over 160Mbps up?

The 5G plan they sell is meant to be capped at 250Mbps and I am only on a $35 sim only plan.

      • It's better than nothing, but still, I've found 5G to be kinda hilariously over marketed, at least from trying all three in regional and remote areas.

But stand alone 5G, that might be the changer.

I don't care about speed anymore, give me unlimited data, or huge amounts of it without even thinking about it anymore. 1Gbps speed on my phone? Meh.

    • +1

The benefits of 5G go beyond data transfer speeds. It will make more efficient use of spectrum and therefore there’s more bandwidth to share with all users on the tower. Telstra will make the 5G access permanent but it’s continuing this charade of suggesting it will be a trial in an attempt to sucker people into paying for their ridiculously high priced plans.

      • Yeah I've been reading up the spectrum steering, standalone 5G etc, but still, the two main Telcos are trying to sell us on speed, but limiting MVNO's on their speeds. 5G is amazing! 5G is so fast! Limited to 100Mbps, Limited to 250Mbps. OK.

Which is? IS 5G about speed? or is 5G not about speed Telstra/Optus? Pick one.

I can tell the ACCC will have something to say about this limiting at some point. Because 4G is faster than 100Mbps, even 250Mbps, but they've all of a sudden put in a limiter on 4G & 5G for seemingly no real reason other than greed.

  • +2

What's the point of even offering this if you cap it to 100mbps lol…

boost will give you 250+ on 4g

  • +1

If you want to keep 5G access after the trial you will need to change to a $59 5G plan

    Don't pay them.
You being on 5G benifits the carrier more.

  • Noticed I had 5G the other day and wondered what it was all about.
Ran a couple of speed tests out of curiosity were around 120/70.

Is there any providers out there that offer 5G prepaid for a decent price? I'm only on the $30 pre paid and have a huge data bank going so don't need massive data

    • +2

The short of it is, 5G isn't that great, and the telcos are trying hard to make it seem so. 4G is already really good.

You can get much better deals on 4G only plans, see Kogan, Felix, Circles life, Moose mobile etc

But if you want truly uncapped 5G speeds with no trials:

      $40 for 40GB + 2Mbps endless data - https://www.vodafone.com.au/plans/sim-only

      https://www.vodafone.com.au/prepaid/plans

      $40 for 80GB on Optus 5G

      https://www.spintel.net.au/home-mobile/plans

The telcos are trying to limit speeds on 5G for MVNO's to make a clear difference between their networks and the main network, but I reckon the ACCC will come down on them for it at some point because 4G is faster than 100Mbps, even 250Mbps, but they've all of a sudden put in a limiter on 4G & 5G for seemingly no real reason other than greed.

I was bored last night. Boost mobile 12 month SIM, no esim however VoLTE and VoWiFi.

Turned off 5G straight after, it's fast but kills battery…

5G kills the iPhone 12 mini super fast.

      I was bored last night

I sincerely hope you make a full recovery

  • Getting 5 Mbit/s in the eastern suburbs in Sydney… Telstra full 5G.

    4G = about 20 Mbit/s

  • Is there any benefit to Woolworth over boost?

    • +1

Just the 10% off your shopping at Woolworths once a month. Without it, you’ll have to go to Aldi and save 40% instead

      • Ah sweet as. Yup, I already go to Aldi so not point. Woolies is way to expensive

        • +1

          Oh — and eSIM

          • @tharlow: Frick. I brought a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 46mm Classic with LTE ($230 used on eBay) and I want an e-sim. I hope boost pulls its finger out soon as I would love to leave my phone at home during fitness activities. I might consider Woolworths when my pre-paid contract is up. Cheers again

            • @Froot Loops: FYI, eSIM isn't supported on wearables yet (known as 'one number' or 'number share') - only supported on phones themselves

    Woolworths, I demand a refund!

I'm paying for your 5G, I'm paying more for less data than on a 4G plan, and now you're giving 5G to everyone.

(I may as well complain here, even though I know it is pointless, because it appears to be impossible to contact Woolworths or Woolworths Mobile any other way.)

    • You can just change plans via the app or website and it takes effect immediately

      • -1

I think you haven't thought this through, Mr Woolworths.

Given the big jump in price no-one with a 4G plan is going to upgrade to paying for a 5G plan until they have to, right when the trial finishes. And lots of people on the 5G plan are going to be unhappy they're paying more and getting no more than if they were on a 4G plan, and they'll downgrade. And when the 5G trial ends in 6 months both those groups are going to be looking at where else they can get 5G cheaper than Woolworths 5G. And it won't be very hard to find somewhere where it is.

        I'm looking elsewhere right now.

        • I was just giving you an option to pay less by moving to the lower plan and keeping 5G (keeping in mind that the 5G trial is capped at 100Mbps, whereas the 5G plan itself has 250Mbps). If you don't want to take it, that's fine

  • I'd much rather MNVOs got access to shared number services such as "Telstra One" (e.g. for smart watches / ipads etc).

  • -5

crazy how no one is sceptical here about 5G given the lack of analysis of impact on human and animal health…

  • +1

Come on guys, roll it out to the long-term prepaid plans and you've got me for life… you probably already have me for life, but hey :-)

  • So after the trial you need to be on the $59 plan which is basically the $45 plan with 5G access. $14 extra for 5G sounds a bit exxy to me.
I mean Telstra is $58 for 40gig (then slowed after that) and you get voLTE, full network.

  • Anyone else having internet issues on Woolies 5G?
I've been getting 2-3 bars connectivity around my place and work, but there's been constant internet drop outs.
I've tried following the troubleshooting steps on the Woolies website, and the only thing that works is resetting network settings, which is kinda annoying to do every 24 hours 🥲

    • No, no problems whatsoever. But then I'm in a 5-bar reception area for Telstra.
