  • It’s just that there are plenty of ways to save on an iPad, not mention a new model is probably on the way soon.

If this offer can be used along with the latest (upcoming) model, that would be great value.

    • +2

      Can you name some?
I am looking for a data plan with around 500GB each month.
      Thanks.

      • I meant there are plenty of ways to save on the iPad itself. Offers, education/EPP discounts, gift cards discounts, etc.

TBH 500GB/mth data plan? What are you using it for? Can you use Fixed Wireless NBN instead?

Otherwise, It seems 400GB/mth data-only plan from Telstra is $85. Or compromise with Vodafone, which is $60 unlimited.

If you find the offer in this post tempting, consider buy it, unlock the tablet (if there's a network lock in the first place), then sell the tablet. It should be still equals ~$15/mth. Of course remember you're still paying $69 on the bill.

        • You won’t find people willing to buy even a brand new iPad for that value from the marketplace

        • Thanks.
I'm using Vodafone ATM, paying $60 unlimited, have nothing to complain except feeling paying too much compared to the deal from OP

          • @Averell: But you're paying the same rate indefinitely, which is predictable. Such deal only lasts 2 years and you'll need to get rid of the iPad somehow to make it worth.

Whichever suits you the best, mate.

            • @xmagic: ah, just that I'm in need of a tablet :) after two years I can just switch back to a normal plan

      • +1

Not sure if it's still available but I switched to Optus Month to Month 500g for $65 a month (For the first 12 months). I work away during the week so it helps being able to hotspot and not have a second internet bill. I came from Telstra and it's been great, I don't notice any difference in Service besides actually getting a couple of extra bars in my office where I usually had 0-1 bars with Telstra.

      • +2

You can use Belong data plan, $70/mo, 500GB data, with Telstra network

        • Is Belong similar to Boost or Woolworths/Aldi?
I have a Woolworths SIM, much worse than a Boost one

          • @Averell: Belong's signal is quite similar to the Telstra. It provides the highest speed. It also has the data bank function that allows you save the unused data into next month.

            • @larry0426: Belong data-only service does not databank, it rolls over to the next month then expires at end of month.

          • +1

            @Averell:

Is Belong similar to Boost or Woolworths/Aldi?

Belong is wholesale network, same as Aldi/Woolies

Could this be returned afterwards and changed with s22 ultra for example?

    • -2

Yes. Just tell the storeperson change of mind and dont mention about this deal

      • Perfect, thank you

      • -1

How does this work? When you return the ipad what do they refund? $1449?

        • -1

Yes. They will refund jb hi fi gift card

          • @BurnSomeCashs: why dont you ask for the same value gift card while you sign the contract?

            • @Ohz: Good luck with that. They will reject immediately

      • +9

If this iPad is through Telstra, the ipad IMEI will be attached to your plan. Changing items is not that simple. I suggest asking first.

        • Man, tell me about the return process with Telstra. They pretty much make it impossible to do so…

          • @zed264: Ill never trust telstra again after returning and canceling an xbox1 contract, it went 'missing' and was a nightmare to prove I returned it with CCTV

      • +1

It won't work (at least) in Sydney CBD stores, I tried 4 stores and all the managers did check before approving the return. I got the Galaxy Z Flip 4 from previous $99 deals. They know that the gift card was from Telstra deal so they don't accept any return or exchange. You must be lucky to find JB manager who don't check your receipt, so I wouldn't count on it.

        • -1

From my experience, my local store the process went smoothly. I told them i bought it by mistake and i want to upgrade to a better version, etc. Then after they issue gift card just walk away.

          • +1

@BurnSomeCashs: Could you share which store do you go to? Also when was the last time you did this? I've done this before but it was 2 years ago, they might have realized lots of people are doing the same.

            • -1

@yummypinacolada: Liverpool NSW about 2 years ago.
Wetherill park NSW 1 year ago.

              • @BurnSomeCashs: So its a while ago, that's why maybe its different now. I even try my luck again today with different stores, I asked for exchange to a different colour. They agreed but they put a comment in my new receipt in all capital. "DO NOT EXCHANGE OR REFUND PHONE IS PART OF TELCO DEAL PREVIOUS RECEIPT NUMBER #########".

Now I'm gonna need to sell my Galaxy Flip 4, hopefully I don't lose too much. I also tried to get $20 off from Telstra chat, but no luck after 10+ tries. I'd say no more loopholes of JB and Telstra plan, it was good while it lasted. I guess I'm not buying JB+Telstra plan again.

Just fyi, the m1 ipad pro has been out for a while now. We're expecting an m2 one any day now.

Of course, it doesn't make this device a bad one but I'd be pretty upset if I bought this and then a few days later it was superseded.

    • +1

There's never been an iPad model that Apple still sells as the latest model as old as the 11 inch iPad Pro.

      • True, not far off two years without a refresh. And ironically, still the most powerful tablet in the market

It could do so much more if not constrained by iPadOS.

    • There precisely zero reasons to wanting an M2 over an M1 on an iPad. M1 is already hyper-over spec'd for what it can do. If we could install Mac Os then, maybe (and even then, M1 would be still more than enough) but Apple deliberately chooses not to let its users to do so.

  • So hypothetically I'm already with Telstra but if I went out and bought a cheap sim from a non Telstra carrier and ported that over am I still eligible?

    • +1

It’s a mobile broadband plan, you can just sign up for a new number.

      • Depends on how they provision your service, there might not be a number at all.

And I would rather my data-only plan not comes with a number so no robocall or scam text.

  • Can I use this as a mobile hotspot or even better, insert it in a router to use it as my home internet?

Seems like a good idea to me.

    • Dont see why not

      • Seems like there's hoops to jump thru when it's 5g. Hopefully there's a cheaper option for 4g

        • Not sure what you mean, how is 5g different for this?

          • +1

@Fancydancer: 5G is faster for sure. I'd say carriers probably want fixed wireless options to be 5G as the network capacity is bigger thus cheaper to maintain the same number of users. Of course they'll sell you for more money than 4G just for the sake of the name.

IIRC mobile plans are not to be used as a home broadband as it breaks TOS especially for the unlimited plans but I don't think they'll care.

            • +1

@xmagic: I called Telstra about this once, they did say they are able to tell if a sim is being used in a mobile device or a tablet/cellular modem. They indicated that for a mobile phone plan, they will block your access once they detected that it is being used in a cellular modem (e.g. used as home internet).

That said, I believe this deal is not a mobile phone plan but a data plan which means it can be used in tablets and cellular modems so it should not run into this problem.

If you look closely at the TOS of mobile phone plans and these data plans, the mobile phone plans does specify (I think in the 'fair use policy' section) it cannot be used to replace home internet (I don't remember how they worded this), and this doesn't exist in the TOS for data plans like this one.

    • +1

I did exactly same thing last year.
I usually use internet less than 200Gb a month. So I bought this deal and cancelled my broadband.

My usual broadband was 50/20 for 500Gb, my 5g internet was more than 200/20. 5g download was way faster than my nbn.

If you need less than 300Gb, just jump in this deal.

      • I use 150 or less GB a month but I've just finished with Optus. Wondering how to get a cheap 4G Telstra router to chuck the SIM in to use as my main home internet.

        • Buy a second hand one on marketplace or Gumtree? That's what I did, but I am yet to jump on a deal… I'm contemplating with this deal… just not sure if the speeds are sufficient and stable enough since I don't have 5G in my area.

      • Do you have to use a Telstra modem? wonder if I can use the Huawei B818 modem from Optus

        • Sure it's locked to Optus

        • +2

it works on Huawei B525 from Optus. I'm using it on B525. I think Optus doesn't lock any modem.

      • How are you getting such high uploads? I’m getting around 20/1 speeds… even with 4G and I’m only like 3/4km from CBD.

        • Mine is about the same 200/20, although sometimes it slows down bad. Quite some distance away from tower, signal strength on modem is around 2/5.

Make sure you are using 5G modem.

  • -1

Aren't these nearly 18 months old?

  • -6

Aren’t these basically useless? An expensive spec’d up device that can’t do much..

    • you can browse to facebook.com

  • -1

Is it possible to get another device instead like the new iphone?

  • +2

I have this. Whilst it is a lovely device, I wish I got a MacBook. iPadOS severely neutered it

    • Hopefully future updates will make these M1 iPads more powerful… it's not much but we have already seen 1 feature on iPadOS that's exclusive to M1 models which is Stage Manager. Feature itself aside, it does show slight indication that M1 iPads might branch out a bit than other iPads. Fingers crossed! 😊

  • +1

Why would you sign up with such an expensive mobile broadband plan when you can hotspot from phone??

    • +2

Some people (like me) prefer a proper WWAN-connected device. A tablet, the laptop itself, etc. Hotspot is flakey and slow.

I mean if this offer applies to the upcoming iPad Pro then this is definitely worth it. It's 300G/mth for around $10 actual + essentially interest-free installment of the device.

    • +1

iPad is the key thing for getting this plan, not data itself.

    • +1

Cos tethering to a phone (unless very occasional) is a shtty solution compared to an LTE equipped tablet

    • +1

      Hotspot is flakey and slow.

      and

Cos tethering to a phone (unless very occasional) is a shtty solution

Both statements are completely untrue - I tether from my phone regularly for work, and the experience is absolutely fine. It's just as stable as the phone's internet connection .

If you already have a working phone connection, then absolutely hotspot to it - the experience with a modern phone is great.

      • I tether from my phone regularly for work, and the experience is absolutely fine. It's just as stable as the phone's internet connection

I didn’t suggest it was unstable. I described it as a shtty solution. I’ve tethered plenty and about the last 5 years I’ve had LTE tablets and I’ll never go back to tethering.

You might enjoy tethering, others don’t.

        • Your might enjoy wasting money, others don’t

          • @Fancydancer:

            Your might enjoy wasting money

It’s really just a value proposition isn’t it? No different to any other. For me it improves my quality of life (and extends the life of my phone’s battery substantially).

Presumptuous and condescending of you to suggest I’m wasting money when I am very aware of the alternative (and you have zero clue what I paid for my tablet or data service).

  • I wonder if we can have it as standard sim plan instead of broadband plan

    • Try Vodafone's unlimited plan? That's for the phone.

Felix got unlimited data with speed limit instead. If that's what you're looking for.

      • Not really. I just want the tablet, but use the simcard for phone instead.
That way, it'll be cost efficient, rather than having the plan only for broadband and I still have to pay for my phone sim

        • That's the problem for data-only plans. Even if there's a number, I doubt you'll be able to make and receive calls.

          • @xmagic: I wonder if you could use it in a dual-sim phone, one card = data plan and the other card (eSim) = cheap option with just the number?

            • @YeboMate: You can do that. I'm pretty sure Telstra can convert physical SIM to eSIM. At least on iPhone allows you to use a specific card for call/text and another for data. Then you can use Data on data-only sim and phone on another cheaper plans (365 day prepaid plans?)

              • @xmagic: Possibly… I've never owned a dual-sim phone so I don't know if it's possible to set priority for data consumption. If possible, that would be a neat setup 😊

                • @YeboMate: Not sure about iPhone if that is what you are after.. On Xiaomi dual sim phone it is a super easy function where the system gives you the choice to dedicate one SIM for data and the other SIM for call/message.

  • I got this deal last year when it was a 12 month plan, gone are those days.

  • About the plan, what would happen when that 300GB exhausted?
    Thanks

    • +2

Once you exceed your included data allowance, your speed will be capped at 1.5Mbps, and slowed further in busy periods.

  • Can i get another device instead of Ipad?
Has anyone tried to speak to JB HI-FI salesperson for that?

    • -1

Once you buy the deal, you have a reciept for Ipad pro 11". So you can refund it, JB will give you JB gift card same amount. Or simply, you could exchange any other item.

      • +2

See my comments above, but just tried yesterday with 4 different stores and got rejected because they know my gift card coming from Telstra deal.

  • 11 inches doesn’t come with miniLED screen.

  • is it only for new people or existing telstra customers as well?

    • Both. This is a separate new service added to your Telstra account.

  • Will you be able to call Telstra and ask for $10 off per month for the data sim?

  • Just called couple of JB stores, they all said can't return this iPad or switch to other products.

    • Yep, rep said the same to me. I wanted to pay additional and grt the 12.9 pro.

  • +1

A lot would be porting out of optus I guess to here

    • You don’t think this can/will happen to any other company?

  • Has anyone signed and upgraded to iPad pro 12.9?
    Thanks

    • I tried and they wouldn't allow upgrade so I didn't bother with the deal.

  • Can someone confirm if the 300GB is for the 24 months or only until end of Dec-2022?

This deal refers you to jbhifi.com.au/pages/mobile-broadband and the TOS on that page doesn't seem to reference this deal and only references the deals that comes with JB Giftcards instead of the iPad so I'm inclined to think those TOS are different to this deal.

    • +1

300gb is for 24 months (and beyond if you choose to stay on that plan after your contract ends)

  • Can you buy this and insert the sim into NBN router I have got ? I have got Telstra Smart modem Gen 2

    • Yea pretty sure you can, I plan to do the same.

    • Yes

  • If I buy 2 plans will the data allowance combine?

    • It will not. The JB Telstra plans are on their old system and have data sharing disabled.

  • Is this worth it?
