These are great, have the 5 bay version as backup for my main, runs really well.

What are you running as your main NAS?

      • Norco 4224 - 24 bay 4U server case.

Both have unRaid on them (OS).

        • Sheesh that's a beast. So you only backup the critical files with the smaller TerraMaster?

    • My experience is different . It's 1G of RAM, CPU maxes out totally when copying anything. Software suite is light, and doing most anything with it is painful. If it's the 1G version, know what you are getting into.

It does work fine as a low powered tertiary backup target though.

Great NAS, the 5 bay is running the shucked 12TB WD drive and runs as a Plex server for a Shield.

Also the 5 bay has 2GB of RAM.

  • Might be a bit of a dumb question, but what is the advantage of this over using a small USFF and plugging in a portable hard drive into it and mapping to the network drive?

Is there a downside to my solution, it will just be used for occasional access.

    • I'm trying to set up something with a USFF at the moment, but the reason you use multiple drives is so that you can set the drives up for replication in case of a single or dual disk failure (which is the most likely reason a home user will lose bulk data).

    • Multiple hard drives. You can set them up to run RAID (redundancy) so that if one hard drive fails you can swap it out for a new one without losing data. That said, you can pretty much do the same with multiple portable hard drives. NAS just gives you a compact all enclosed unit.

      • I only need a storage solution for my family photos/videos. Should I follow either of these two solutions (have no idea about USFF yet - can as RaspPi be used for that)? Or just go with Google One/Google Photo?
I have less than 512GB of that data for now - all are still in an external HDD.
        Thanks

        • Are you considering this because you want redundancy of data/backups if there's hardware failure? or do you find the external drive inconvenient and want something always online and shareable?

          • @slimpickings: Both, I think.
With the external drive, I need to plug both the drive and the phone into the same laptop, and copy photos/videos over.
So I'm looking for something with: (1) redundancy, and (2) auto/instant backup (like what MS OneDrive/Google Photo are providing).
            Thanks.

This just works and is easier to manage, and is lower power.

  • I have the 5 bay running Synology DSM 7.

EDIT: I should add that I’ve upgraded the onboard ram on mine as well.

The 4 bay also is known to have a spare plug for a 5th drive if you care to open it up.

What form factor is the ram?

      • I hate figuring out RAM stuff. All those numbers etc…

This is what I bought for the F5-221 https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00G40TB6E

2x modules from memory (pun not intended).

Supposedly it can go higher if you go back and check other posts for this product by user Clear

      • SODIMM.

Wow I didn’t even tag you. You must have a saved search 😝

@[Deactivated]: Just happened to be checking prices at the same time.

  • If only it's f4-220 which has upgradable ram and hidden 1 more bay!

  • Is this good enough to stream Plex in 4k?

    • I don’t stream 4K… but consider: are you streaming just in the home or external? Your net & upload speed will limit external streaming.

      • just home streaming for me

      • If it doesn't specifically say it can handle 4k transcoding I wouldn't go near it

Can't speak for the 210 but I have the F2-220 upgraded to 4gb with DSM6. Using as our photo and video storage and running Home Assistant. I'm happy with it, will update it to DSM7 when I get around to it.

    • hey, just wondering how you installed DSM6? I can't see a display output on the images of the 220 online, and it seems to be the same for the F4-210. Would be curious how you go about doing that.
