still the best monitor money can buy - forget 4k, this is all you need

    • +1

Love mine; looks good, still reasonably easy to run and thank god not 800R like all them new UW’s.

    • +1

Had mine 2 years, going strong, great price, would happily recommend too.

    • +32

One quick look at the OLED Monitor category would show you that at roughly the same price you have the opportunity at the following:

      • 27" QHD 480Hz WOLED
      • 32" 4K 240Hz QD-OLED
      • 27" QHD 360Hz QD-OLED (with change)
      • 49" UWQHD 240Hz QD-OLED

      And in the near future:

      • 27" 4K 240Hz QD-OLED
      • 27" QHD 500Hz QD-OLED

… so no, not the best money can buy, nor at this price, especially once you realise the brightness, longevity, and burn-in protection gains made.

This is a first gen panel, we're basically on 4th gen panels now.

        • +19

I am moving along, why on earth would you overpay for a 165Hz monitor using a technology that can easily now be driven to 360Hz in the same form factor, and has the response times for basic 1000Hz (thermal and voltage demands now permitting)?

Please don't misguide your fellow OzB folk into thinking they can't do better for their money.

          • +1

@jasswolf: what can you suggest with better spec in ~1k budget (30" is also ok)

            'not asking for a friend.

          • @jasswolf: yeah ok, lets see those for $1k pls?
maybe the 27 inch is cheaper but no others are

            • +1

@botchie: I gave you a link to past deals, you can see that they often happen monthly.

There'll be a little bit of slow down presently due to new models - as also mentioned - coming in, but come mid-March I would imagine there'd be deals on again.

              • -5

@jasswolf: Ok so currently this is the best money can buy, ok thx

                • @botchie: You might as well be telling people the time of the day. I haven't even gone looking…

I'll do that in a few hours and get back to you.

              • +1

@jasswolf: Thanks and do compare it properly, so at least 32 inch, ultra wide , oled , more then 165hz and $1k

                • +2

@botchie: No, because that's not what I was trying to tell you, but here's some great current deals using the standard Samsung discount stack (trade-in if available, 10% loyalty bonus from chat, 5% first time app):

                  49" 5120x1440 @ 165Hz for $1196.15

                  49" 5120x1440 @ 240Hz for $1452.65

27" 2560x1440 @ 360Hz will probably bob up sub-$700 soon under similar mechanisms, and I expect the above deals to start dipping lower over the coming months.

                  • +5

@jasswolf: no actually - you were telling me there are better options and cheaper and you were telling me this monitor is old tech
when in reality nothing you put forward is the sweet spot this monitor is - and its the reason Dell didnt upgrade it.
                    $1k
                    34 UW
                    2.5k
                    165 hz
                    OLED
most modern computers can run it comfortably and you dont have to buy the stupid 5090 to get 200 + FPS
like I said from the start - best monitor money can buy for most people -but no, you have to come up with your nerdy crap

                    • -2

@botchie: Firstly, I'm not interested in your hyper-precise goal post setting in an attempt to win an argument… I again point back to the littering of recent and current deals that walk all over this offering in the price range. The panel used in the Alienware has been discontinued.

There are literally 2nd gen 240Hz panels of that make and one is available from Gigabyte locally for $1299, it's just not a popular form factor and typically used for office productivity, and in the case of OLED a panel binning for when they mess up 32:9 or TV panels.

2nd gen panels also have double the life expectancy with respect to burn in due to efficiency and pixel refresh improvements, and the 3rd gen panels like the 27" QHD 360Hz - which has been available at times for under $700 - double life expectancy again. The current 32:9 panels are 2nd gen.

Your frame rate argument is further nonsense, bereft of knowledge of the GPU market, the breadth of performance in various games, and - in the case of extremely high end graphics - the ability to adjust a few settings to boost performance further with barely any loss of visual quality. Certainly at 3440x1440, you don't need a 5090 to push 240 FPS in a lot of titles.

No one should be recommending this product at this point, particularly if they refuse to budge on this pricing.

                      • +1

@jasswolf: im not trying to win an argument , your sound like a little snobby nerd that thinks hes always right, in this case, if there is a 2ng gen monitor that can do things better I would like to see it, but you havent been able to show it.
comparing this monitor to 27inch one is just dumb, like your whole argument
its also like sayin why buy lg c2 when c4 is 2 gen newer….but when you actually look at it….c2 is probably better…

                        • @botchie: I have spoken about 3 current deals, linked 2 of them. All 2nd gen panels, all superior in some combination of resolution and refresh rate while lasting longer.

comparing this monitor to 27inch one is just dumb, like your whole argument

Considering that 2 great 16:9 monitors often cost less than one great ultrawide monitor, no… no it isn't. Gives you the ability to get even cheaper secondaries and deal with a panel issue easier and cheaper too.

You then decommission an old monitor by grabbing a new fancy one to take over as primary with far less financial stress.

its also like sayin why buy lg c2 when c4 is 2 gen newer….but when you actually look at it….c2 is probably better…

It's pretty rare to have TV models 2 years apart in current circulation, and the same progress is being made with longevity and/or brightness on those.

Not interested in your brief when at most $100 dollars brings such a huge upgrade, and will very likely continue to drop in price. Won't be responding further.

          • +8

@jasswolf: All great options, I just wish that there were more modern 34" UWQHD alternatives. 49" is way too big/pricey for most people and the rest are 16:9 aspect ratio. So the AW3423DWF is still one of the best options in the ultrawide space. Not to mention most newer ultrawides are using stupidly aggressive curves like 800R.

            • @trankillity: There are 240Hz QD-OLED that fit this description, just Samsung hasn't made their own model so discounts are typically not as deep.

Not sure if there's a 2025 update in the works with a refresh rate bump, as it's a niche choice in the high-end gaming space and 16:9 and 32:9 options make far better use of space on manufacturing lines.

The 32:9 curvature can vary, but at some point it gets so flat you're looking at installing a small plane wing on your desk.

21:9 is generally the realm of office productivity, especially in an age of significant VR progress and affordability.

              • +4

@jasswolf: Heh, that's actually exactly my use case with 21:9. About 65% office work, 35% gaming. Going to a 40" 4k is too large for the viewing distance and would require more vertical head movement. 34" 21:9 really is the best sweet spot IMO. Well aware it's a niche of a niche, just wish there were more options. Good thing my 3yo AW3423DW that I got at launch for not much more than this deal ($1400 via stacking discounts, down from $2500 RRP at launch) is still going very strong though.

                • -1

@trankillity: Fair enough! Longer term, you might move over to smart glasses or VR as the hand tracking technologies involved in that space are moving very quickly now, and there's always the old tried and true wireless peripherals.

                  • @jasswolf: Funnily enough, I also have a Quest 3/have tried remote desktop. The pixel density still isn't there (Pixels Per Degree in the case of VR). Not to mention there hasn't been enough research on the potential long-term eye damage effects from using static focus for screens mere millimeters from your eyes.

                    • @trankillity: Yeah eye tracking and hand tracking need to get better, but the agular resolution is now getting there with the new micro-OLED panels.

        • +1

Am I crazy or is your linked review for an entirely different monitor?

        • Thanks for the updated Rtings link. Appreciated.

        For gaming….

The C4 42 should be added to that list. @$1280 its very impressive.
Yes its a TV, but its also the best in class HDR by a long mile
        Its also:
A 27 inch 2560x1440P if you want it to be.
A 38-40 inch 3840x1600 panel in 21:9 if you want it to be.

After being through all of the OLEDs 27inch, 32 inch and 34 inch……this is miles ahead of any monitor.
Yeah 27 inch 360hz is great for sweaty FPS, but that's about it.

        Not ultrawide 1440 OLED though

    • It was, LG's 45" 5k2k Ultrawide just took that crown.

    • Why forget 4K?
With little patience you can get the 4K version for less than this.
      Get 240Hz vs 165
      Get Gsync
Bigger screen (437.6 sq inches vs 417.2 sq inches)

        4k 240 hz needs a 5090 , that's a new category

        • You don't actually have to run it at 240Hz
Mine is fine on a 3070
          For CAD it's amazing.
          For browsing… amazing.
There is nothing ti does poorly really.

For gaming, sure, the 3070 struggles, but with DLSS and sensible settings it's fine.
AA for example can be left off or low.

Absolute very worst case i run fames at 1080p which the 3070 does with great ease.

Looking for a 9070XT or 5070Ti soon, so that will also help.

And as my GPUs turn over the ability to drive this resolution will be less an less of an issue.

Had my 1440p display for 10 years, expect i'll have this for same.

        • I'm planning to get a 4K 240Hz monitor because I play mostly old single player titles, so I don't need a 5090 to run at high fps. The only 'current' multiplayer title I play is Counter-Strike and Overwatch, and those are easy to get high fps in.

It doesn't really matter to me not being able to play absolutely everything at 240 fps anyway. If there was a cheaper 32" or 27" OLED at 120Hz then I would buy that instead, but there isn't one.

  • +2

    Tempting
Need new GPu first, pending 9070xt pricing!

    • +2

      Aus price $1,399

      • +1

If true, hell of a bump compared to alleged global MSRP.

Think you might be looking at a place holder or previous MSRP guidance due to stock getting shipped since January (AMD will hand out rebates for the latter).

        • Australian price is always roughly double US MSRP. ~1300 AUD sounds about right.

          • @j1nx:

            1. The US MSRP is $599.
            2. The absolute worst markup we've ever seen at launch is 20% from NVIDIA wholesalers.

That puts it in the $1250 range at worst, but given the on-going prevalence of raytracing in games it's largely competing with the RTX 5070, which should be cheaper.

      • Just wait two more months; AMD GPU prices will drop as they always do.

        • Not this time: their MSRP is cut throat for the bill of materials.

It costs about the same to produce as a 5080, and there's still significant hardware and software R&D costs that necessitate large margins.

    • +1

nvidia -$50, you know the drill, then the nvidia / amd split will go further from 90 / 10 to 95 / 5

  • Amazing monitor, especially for this price

  • This or wait for LG C4 OLED 42" to go on sale again?
$1162 back in December for one of those.

    • +1

Same query here and my use case is even split between work/tv/PS5 & XSX. My very quick take is that the LG C4 would be better for console gaming as this only goes to 4K/60hz for consoles and the real estate on the 42’ LG quite a bit larger.

I think if you’re high end PC gaming this is probably the pick.

      • +1

C4 is the best monitor i have used. And its a TV. Does 144hz no sweat and the picture is unmatched.

Still looking at one of these for work.

    • +3

Would say this choice entirely depends on your use case and hardware, I personally wouldn't use a 42" TV as my PC monitor as it's vertical height is too much for me + I prefer frames over 4K.

I'd go for the LG if I had a console and a couch though.

    • Definitely the C4
      - Signifcantly brighter
      - Doesn't get ruined and turn grey in a bright environment
      - LG replaces burnt in panels far longer than Dell's 3 year warranty

  • +7

    Muzeebb

    • Ahhhh. Those were the days. Elation followed by crushing disappointment. 🤣😂

      • Haha yaa

  • +1

Have been using it for a while. A couple of notes that may sway people depending on their preference.

    1) after a few firmware updates the HDR1000 looks and works great. But it's nowhere near as good as a good OLED TV. My LG C1 looks much better when playing the same PC games

    2) it's a much better productivity monitor than an OLED TV. Better text clarity and general feels much more comfortable to look at for long sessions (note that I'm basing that on the LG C1. The newer models are probably better for that)

Also, the colour quality drops if you run it at Max refresh rate, but there is some custom tweaks you can do to get it looking good while running at Max refresh.

  • +3

Just be aware that this monitor will have text fringing if you intend to use it for work/productivity. I went with a 4K 32inch OLED screen for that reason (Samsung Odyssey G8).

  • FYI - Signed up to the EPP with a personal email, got sent the code. The 7% off on G Series Laptops seems to work but the 10% doesn't work.

  • I'd just wait for the Alienware AW3225QF to come back down to $1200, much better for productivity and gaming

    • The curve sucks in 16:9.
Had it and it is distractng.

      • +1

I'm reading your comment on the AW3225QF, it is my first curved monitor and I was worried that the curve would be distracting, but it's barely noticeable

If you dislike curves then the AW3423DWF isn't much better, no point paying $1200 for a gen-1 panel now, alright deal if you have EPP/student discount though

  • I bought a refurb 6-12 months ago for 900ish. Great hardware. I don't do pixel refresh, just don't run high brightness or leave static interfaces for hours on end and it's been fine.

  • +1

can confirm, signing up with my private email and getting a 10% discount worked. thank you, I've been waiting for a sub 1100 price for a new unit.

  • Any deals on U4025QW?

Don't actually need a 5K monitor, but that's the closest match ticking all the boxes.

  • Is this a good monitor for gaming on PS5 and also universities word/excel multitasking stuff.

    • +3

Decent for multitasking, though text clarity isn't super-duper but its usable. PS5 I doubt it would be good, I don't think consoles do ultra-wide so it'd be pointless.

  • +3

Does this deal still work? Every time I try to register it says "Oops something went wrong, please click on the FAQ". Any tips? Can someone share a promo code if they aren't buying? Thank you!

    • +1

Yeah doesn’t work for me either

    • Are you using your personal email? They may have fixed it up.

Thanks for the price drop notif, got it for 1,048.10! Used my workplaces Dell Platinum for 10% off and had $30 dell credit for my dormant account for some reason. I'll see if I can generate any more discount codes later today.

    • Thanks. I would like to buy one if 10% code works.

      • Didn't let me :(

Mine was delivered yesterday and I am absolutely loving it.

  • Dell just announced an upgrade to this monitor with 240Hz
    https://www.windowscentral.com/accessories/monitors/alienwar…

Makes sense now why this is on sale.

    • Looks like a worthy successor!

  • +1

no surprise really, but the new one will likely cost around $1500aud for the first year. which makes this still a great deal.

  • +1

I've had this monitor for 2 years now, and I've been really happy with it.

  • I am torn. Shall I go for this one or wait for the new one. I also have the 10% off coupon for this. Apparently the newer 34inch model has been launched at $200 less than the last one

    • If you don’t mind waiting for reviews and paying more $, it sounds like the new panel is a worthy successor from the article another commenter linked above. We’re not far away from its rumoured release I believe.

I personally wanted an upgrade straight away and have no regrets so far from this deal, especially with the 3 year burn-in warranty, while others have different opinions about this deal.

      • Thanks for this. To be honest, my monitor will be used mostly as a productivity monitor and literally not for gaming at all. I dont care much about the higher refresh rate but i do care about the multimedia experience such as brightness and hdr performance.
